Wasn't that part of the point for this movie, to take the rich blonde girl b*tchy bimbo and make her into a smart and kind character to bust the stereotype. Sadly many characters like that gets re-cast or re-written in a way that either breaks another stereotype or just misses the point completely. Early 2000's-2015 were great years for movies. It really felt like the people working on them cared and weren't just after the money.
Nearly everyone else treated Elle like she wasn't good enough for Harvard, while David and Emmett never did. Loved this scene, it was perfect for demonstrating 'I've got your back, too' to David

You know, sometimes it’s that first step of putting yourself out there and just trying something. Even if this is 90% guaranteed to end badly or just be a plain bad idea, the experience is gonna help the guy grow as a person and maybe make the next approach with a girl he’s interested in be a little less awkward and nerve wracking. I mean i think we can all relate with first hand experience that putting yourself out there is hard enough as it is but then you have people like this whether it be in a romantic situation or not who are OVERLY cruel, so Elle gave this guy a much needed confidence boost
