When Dolly first came to Nashville, she joined the Porter Wagoner TV show because at that time Dolly was completely unknown and Porter was a well-established star in the world of country music, and he was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Dolly knew that joining his show would be a huge boost to her career, but she also knew that she did not want to be contractually bound to him indefinitely because she wanted to be free to do what she wanted to do so she promised him (and he agreed) that she would stay with him for five years. When the five years was up, Dolly had become a HUGE star and she had eclipsed Porter and he knew it. He knew that she was now the draw to the show, and even though he had promised to release her in five years, he did not want her to leave, and he was making it difficult for her to go out on her own. They had been somewhat arguing about this and Dolly knew that Porter was not hearing a word she said so she went home and wrote "I Will Always Love You" because it was her way of telling him that while she thought a lot of him and while she wished him well, it was time for her to go. PERIOD. When she next saw him, she sang the song and he finally got it and reluctantly stopped fighting to try to make her stay.

Whitney's version made me think ' Wow, what a singer'. Hearing Dolly sing it made me think Wow, what an incredible songwriter and storyteller who makes you believe every word'! The spoken lines in Dolly's performance carry more emotional weight for me than any of Whitney's runs or power belting.
She wrote this and another amazing song, Jolene, on the same afternoon. Another amazing thing, years down the road, porter wagonner had fallen on hard times, at some point he had sold the rights to his music, he was struggling financially, she bought the rights to his music and gave them back to him.

They aren't a big name but have been with such artists as Bob Dylan and Levon Helm of The Band. .They are real, fun, and skilled. Anything they do will be good. A favorite of mine is "In the Attics of My Life" which they perform in perfect three part harmony with Amy Helm, Levon's daughter. Since I'm suggesting, I will add "Whispering Pines" by the band.As a bad guitarist I will not that it has thirteen, THIRTEEN chords. It is absolutely beautiful. You really need to check out The Band, the original "roots music" guys.

It doesn’t seem to hit as hard as Whitney’s version, because Dolly’s love for Porter Wagner was a platonic love in the true sense of the term.
This is the weakest I have heard her sing this song - if you like this try Dolly with Whitney together doing this song or some later of Dolly.

I would disagree that Whitney missed some arbitrary mark. She coverd the song using her particular strengths, I thought it was a marvelous interpretation of an excellently written song. PEACE

@@DjPjrocReacts911 bingo! That's the point. If I write a song for an Operatic performance and someone sings it as a country song they aren't going to hit the "mark" and it will sound a bit odd probably.

Someone else said this on a UA-cam video, so it's not mine -- but I agree. Whitney sang this to the world, Dolly sang this like it was only to me. (Or something to that effect.)
