Excuse me while I melt. That was just beautiful. No matter how many times I listen to that trio, I feel devoid of troubles for a moment. Thank you, sir.
They put themselves together. Dolly stopped to visit Emmylou in LA. Linda and Emmylou were already friends and they both said Dolly was their current favorite female vocalist. The three of them were amazed at the sound of their blended voices. From then on (circa 1974?) they all wanted to record together. But with three different record companies involved it was the mid 1980's before it was possible. You should listen to them sing Dolly's song she wrote "My blue tears."
Don't forget Dolly's a generous philanthropist. They put themselves together! Emmylou and Linda became friends, and worshipped Dolly. They finally met at Emmy Lou's house in L.A.
I am so enjoying your journey through country music. Since I’m 74, these three women have been in my music world for decades. I would highly recommend the Linda Ronstadt documentary, “The Sound of My Voice” to you. I would love to see you react to a favorite of mine, “Up To The Mountain” by Patty Griffin. Another favorite by her is “Heavenly Day”. Check it out.
Since they were all friends, somehow one of them started singing a tune. The other two jumped right in. Since the ladies were of the same kindred spirit, the sound is what you are hearing today. All of the women are well into their 70's. Dolly and Emmylou are still very active. Rhonda left the stage because she suffers from muscular dystrophy Thanks for going over some of the lyrics while the trio was singing. What a powerful image! The love of a mother!.
These three women are great friends for many many years. They all knew they should do something together but of course their individual careers didn’t allow them time to cut an album or two. But when they did get together, we were the lucky ones.
You don't often see Dolly singing the alto part. I love these three women. They all bring a unique talent that is priceless and timeless. Dolly has had the greatest impact simply from her prolific song writing. Many people know her music without knowing who she is even. Linda is simply amazing in any genre she vocalizes, from pop to country to American standards, to Spanish mariachi. Emmylou has basically created her own genre almost impossible to categorize yet so easy to listen to. Thanks for introducing these ladies, though I'm late to the comments here.
You should look up both Emmylou and Linda's music as well, they are all three legends. They decided on their own to get together.. music industry, especially country music at that time liked to make people think women in the industry were rivals and enemies. These three decided they were not having it, they were friends and sisters and loved each other and you can see that when you watch them together.
The trend has not abated e.g. Real Housewives. I have been fortunate to meet more professional musicians than most. Most focus on their skills and hold others who do the same in esteem. When asked to collaborate the artists are often eager but managers, promoters, agents and legal representatives are often significantly less excited. Regarding this collaboration legend has it that some presenting roadblocks were reminded of who pays whom very directly. Maybe that's untrue or exaggerated but not inconsistent with my interactions.
Ok, this is the only Trio song I a finding in your reviews with my search. Which is okay, it is lovely, as is the whole album. I just looked the album up, I remember it had been an accidental find for me, searching for something else. Think I figured out how I stumbled across it, thoug. Ry Cooder plays guitar on teh album. I expect I was searching him and this came up. Fair deal. Thank you for the review, sorry I am late to the party. Peace.
I'm so glad to find your video. The best version of "The Sweetest Gift" is on Linda Ronstadt's "Prisoner In Disguise" album from 1977. It was that version that I first heard and fell instantly in love with Emmylou Harris and have been in love with her ever since. Their harmonies are so beautiful and captivating they are almost like another musical instrument. Dolly, Linda and Emmylou recorded an accoustic album called "Trio" in 1987. It was one of the best selling country albums of all time and won tons of awards. Their harmonies are incredible. Breathtaking. Listen to "My Dear Companion" for some of the best harmonies you'll ever hear. If you enjoy harmonies, listen to Emmylou Harris's version of "Till I Gain Control Again" on her "Elite Hotel" album from 1976. About the last minute of the song are Emmylou harmonizing with Linda Ronstadt and Fayssoux Starling it's one of the most beautiful musical moments ever recorded. If you can, listen to it with headphones. Emmylou can hit some notes that will break your heart and make you cry. She sings so effortlessly and as natural as breathing.
Emmylou is one of the best harmony singers in the world. Her solo work is just as good. Boulder to Birmingham and Red Dirt Girl strongly recommended. Both are classics.
In my country (South Africa) church and gospel choirs have a slightly different blend of harmony than this Southern/Country style. But we recognize good harmonies across the boundaries of genre. Linda and Dolly are absolutely superb in this performance but Emmylou IMO brought some unexpected phrasing and tonal choices that are my reason why this never gets old to me. I cannot think of anyone of any style better at harmony vocals. I agree with the solo recommendations but there is a vast and rewarding solo catalog to visit and enjoy.
All three of these women are icons. In addition to the Trio albums with all three, Emmylou Harris and Linda Rondstadt released an album of duets. It’s also excellent.
Finally, someone else who likes "Western Wall: The Tucson Sessions". What an incredible album. Linda and Emmylou's version of the Sinead O'Connor song "I'm Here to Mother You" is still my go-to when I need a lullaby to comfort me.
They got together all on their own & thank the Lord they did! I just love it when they sing, together or seperately, the really old songs like this one.
They're all queens of country. I think Dolly has the voice of an angel. I look forward to you exploring them further with songs like Dolly's 'Joshua,' and Linda's 'Silver Threads and Golden Needles. Emmylou did a wonderful duet with John Denver called 'Wild Montana Skies.
Love them one and all. Queens of Country. Such amazing talents individually. Together they're epic. Emmy Lou has a voice that conveys heart break perfectly. Their harmonies gives me chills.
This performance was very early in the years long collaboration of these three amazing voices. They went on to make two albums, Trio and Trio2. Their harmonies are wonderful. All three had very successful careers. Dolly is obviously most well known and recognized. Emmylou was one of my favorite female country singers back in the day with hits like "Born To Run" and "Two More Bottles of Wine"
Which of those three had 5 consecutive platinum albums? Which one sold more posters than Farrah Fawcett? Which one was the first woman to sellout a football stadium?

@@mikemaricle9941 yeah I know, but Dolly parton’s name (and songs) are still more popular here in Europe than Linda Rondstadt’s. In the US it might me different though
They did at least one album together, maybe more. Each one of these ladies have angelic voices, and then when they blend their voices together it's pure magic.
If you don't already know, Linda and Emmylou recorded an album in 1998, "Western Wall - The Tucson Sessions". It's a wonderful, beautiful, intelligent album and one of the most overlooked duet/duo/collaboration albums in music history. For some reason the album never got the recognition or the publicity that it deserved, even though it was nominated for a Grammy. There's a couple of really brief but magical moments on the album worth pointing out thàt might otherwise get overlooked or missed by the listener. The first one is on "For a Dancer", Linda lead singer. Emmylou hits a note that sounds like it came straight from Heaven with the word "known" at about the 1:49 mark. She hits it again with the word "thrown" at approximately the 3:21 mark. It's breathtaking. Linda returns the favor on "Valerie", Emmylou lead singer. Linda hits a note with the word "own" at the 1:09 and several other times thru out the song that'll put goose bumps on your arms.
After this album was released, the two of them did a short tour and I was lucky enough to see them, since one of the stops was San Francisco, it was unforgettable.
That is a great album. Telling Me Lies. The Pain of Loving You. I've Had Enough. I remember the first I heard of Emmy Lou Harris was in 1976 and she was on the radio singing Goodbye To Daddy which was written by Dolly Parton. Linda Ronstadt was the singer in a group called Stonepony and they had a hit in about 1966 or 1967 called Different Drum. Dolly was always Dolly. I think the first song I remember by her was Dumb Blonde also in 1967. Gee whiz, I am old.
Linda and Emmy Lou take us to church! Those Trio recordings are truly memorable and so easy to hear. If you enjoy those incredibly tight harmonies (and you seem to), please discover those three iconic women in depth.
They did an amazing version of Mr. Sandman. I am thinking they did two trio albums plus Emmy Lou and Linda did a duet album. I think I still have them all and now I need to dig them out and listen again. For more up-tempo songs by each; Dolly: 9 to 5, Joshua, or 2 Doors Down Emmy Lou: I Ain't Living Long Like This, Guitar Town, or Driving Wheel. Linda: Back In The USA, That'll Be The Day, Just One Look These are just a few of my favorites M&M 🤠
It made me smile to see you appreciate those magical harmonies. Their “Trio” albums are part of my collection. You are selecting some fine tunes to discover! I enjoy watching your ongoing discoveries.
All three stars in their own right who looked for the opportunity to work together. We got 2 amazing albums from them where they took turns taking the lead on a song with the others providing beautiful harmonies. I think High Sierra might be my favourite, but you can’t really go wrong.
Memories of you is the best song on their collaboration CD. What really struck me in their trio is how distinctive Dolly's voice is. She is a great talent
Another great reaction. I'm 70 now and college days were swept up with Kris Kristofferson Rita Coolidge, and eventually everyone because they're the kind of artists who appreciate each other. It's fun to join the journey as I hear old favorites and learn new songs I'd missed!
There is a song called 'Where Grass Don't Grow' by George Jones that you should check out since you liked this vocal harmony. Jones had originally recorded the song as a solo but the later version on his album 'The Bradley Barn Sessions' has a far superior version because the recording on that album has Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, and Trisha Yearwood singing the amazingly haunting background vocals to where... 🎵The one I loved walked through those fields with me She was a hard working woman true as one could be But then one year death was going 'round and swiftly took it's toll Janie had to go Now she lies asleep under ground so poor that grass won't grow🎵

@@DjPjrocReacts911 thank you kindly, Dj Pj. For having one there no cure for yet, I am doing well. My multiple myeloma was discovered during my third back surgery 3 1/2 years ago. I am fortunate and very happy to have.come out of those surgeries (never mind the cancer) still walking and relatively pain free (well controlled). It’s funny, while there is no cure or even remission the goal is to get patients to something called PFS (progression free survival), which I have reached 3 times. Even though they don’t use the word remission PFS means clean scans and you are done getting your ass kicked for now. 😂 so, the funny part is a person can relapse without ever having reached remission. I have relapsed 3 times. After 145 weeks of chemo, a stem cell transplant, and now being in a clinical trial for something called CAR-T Cell Therapy I am clean for the third time. I have been participating in research from day one at University of Chicago (absolute top notch brilliant people)100 miles from where I live in SW Michigan. Between UC and our local hospital I have spent 69 night inside. For now, CAR-T is working better than expected. I had that over 19 days at UC in June and July. I will be very happy if this trial ends up earning FDA approval and that I was one of 80 people around the world who participated in the trial and had something to do with finding the next level treatment for myeloma. It is a fascinating technology. They remove part of your white blood cells (millions) called T-cells, then they ship them to a laboratory in NJ and train and equip (with an as yet unnamed drug) them to find and kill myeloma cells. Five weeks after they take them they infuse them back into you. While I was there they began testing it on people with solid tumors, such as lung cancer. Many of those doctors and nurses sat in on mine so they could see and learn the process from my doctor. It really is the next frontier. It does far less damage to healthy tissue than chemo does, even though chemo has improved a lot in the last 10 years. Hell, 2 of the chemo regiments I had were not approved yet for myeloma when my case began. We try to kick the can15-18 months down the road and wait for research to make more discoveries. Sorry for the length here. I want to sayI have had tremendous help not only from both hospitals, but friends who came through very strongly. My wife has done so much, spent all but about 6 of those nights with me in the hospital and has remained the best wife, mom, grandma, and mate I could hope to have. I have learned a hell of a lot in this time and had many wonderful experiences. I have said in my online journal and to my doctors I would happily go through all the bad parts of this again if I could be assured that all the good things would happen again too. That and if you can say “the next time I complain about this will be the first time”…that’s a pretty high bar and if anyone else out there can say the same, I think they have done as well as they could; that you can’t ask for or do more than that at all. Thank you for your well wishes and interest DjPj!

@@tonydelapa1911 I appreciate you sharing, thank you. May you continue to find strength and purpose during these difficult times. One love brother!
Thanks for the ride. Have a suggestion for an artist to check out from way back -Gentleman Jim Reeves. His voice always been described as velvet. Great channel.
Added!
I have this cd. Each song is a gem. ❤❤❤❤❤
I'd like to suggest "Tin Man" by Miranda Lambert sung at 2917 ACM Awards. Just Miranda and her Acoustic Guitar. Really good stuff
It's so sad to realize that due to an illness similar to Parkinson's Ms Linda can no longer sing, not publicly nor for herself. How sad that someone with such a wonderful gift can no longer enjoy or share it. Sometimes this life is just damn hard.
So sad. I wish her well. What a beautiful person, what a voice
It is Parkinsons
Linda Ronstadt! 💕
Dear Sir, I have enjoyed your journey. I can't guess your age but are you old enough to have watched the TV show, 'Gun Smoke'? The character 'Festus Hagan' was an old grizzled cantankerous deputy. But he could SING! If you are bored one day, check out Ken Curtis aka Festus.
Grew up on Bonanza! And guess what? I was named after Pernell Roberts. I’m 50+ today
@@DjPjrocReacts911 Happy Birthday!
