My problem is that I can read characters but when I go to write them I cannot remember how the character looks exactly or the strokes. How can I overcome this?
Happens to me too - then I must make an association immediately - like for Ni3 meaning 'you' (你)"Starts with standing man" and I say, "a PERSON STANDING outside wants to talk to YOU (keyword)" That helps get me started. Association jump starts everything I do - they are in Skritter as ShuoShuo points out - Mandarin Blueprint is all about association. Without association your doomed to a life of rote, drilling (I do those too) and constant forgetting... with association, at least there's a chance...a hope...and when it works you have a nice little victory for yourself... Anyone else feel like writing is the ultimate measure of mastery over a language? Another thing is practicing writing will improve every other language skill: reading, speaking, grammar, vocabulary, comprehension etc.
I started learning to speak the basics, when I lived in China. Then I discovered a book explaining all 部首 radicals. It’s from Edoardo Fazzioli and exists in many languages. I also made up flash cards from the book as well checking on Wikipedia „227 Chinese radicals“ As there you find all different versions too. Like river chuān 巛 also can be 川, or shì worship can be 示 as well as 礻. It’s important to know. Since I know the radicals, remembering characters is much easier for me: Like the word 想 xiǎng , to miss, to think of.. for me now consists of mù 木 tree, mù 目 eye and xīn 心 heart ❤️ Much easier now 😃 Then there is the page characterpop to pop down characters to their radicals- but it’s not perfectly complete and some mistakes there... but still ok
Yep, tbh, I think that's the only real way you can remember them, there's no way anyone could write a 20-stroke character by memorizing all the individual strokes, without prior knowledge of its components/radicals
Vrai, that's how chinese learn chinese when they are young. Even as native speakers, they also spend years to learn how to write 汉字. 部首 logically relate with how 汉字 were invented and developed.
谢谢你!我以前觉得写汉字很难,现在我可以读、写很多汉字。 I started a “radical dictionary” and I’m going through all the words that I’ve learned and organizing them based on radical/common characters. Understanding the meaning behind the characters really helps you memorize it. Anyways, thank you, I found this video helpful!

@@blee_ww hi 👋 I'm currently learning Chinese Mandarin. I recommend you to learn the language by storys and proverbs. Also you have to know that Chinese Mandarin was made by old linguistic men in the past.. so the language has the logic of old men, and can be controversial sometimes 😅
I just started using a lot of the resources you mentioned, been reading du Chinese, Mandarin companion (before I move on to other graded readers I found as well as some kid's story books a friend sent me) every day for about 2 to 3 hours, as well as making and reviewing flashcards for 1 hour. I honestly feel my vocab has increased a lot in the week I've been doing this, hope I can keep doing this and next week start writing once or twice a week and speaking maybe daily with a friend to test my progress. 加油 everyone.

nice video , i learned Japanese for around 3 years but never got a single problem with Chinese characters..now i learn Chinese , they are really easy to relate with the Japanese character (漢字)
To memorize Chinese characters: look at them, then break them down into their componenents, then try to write them, then compare what you wrote with the character then remember all that. Cover the character with paper write it again uncover it and compare.

I always used to think how Chinese people type when there are unlimited characters. Thanks for sharing. I’m revising my forgotten Chinese from the beginning. I’ll come back to this after a couple of weeks.
If you like corrections to your already beautiful English: 6:35 when you say ‘I already recommended this to many students before they reached me out’ Instead of ‘reached me out’ try ‘reached out to me’. I’m assuming it was just a SVO flip in your head but I’ve heard it a few times so far.
Recognition of characters are always easy. To write Chinese with an input system is easy, because Chinese characters appear as an option and you can regognize very quickly if you know them. More difficult is, to write something without suggestions. Only from remembering! In this text, I wrote some English words intentionally not correctly, because English is not my native language and sometimes I make some mistakes in the word order. A difficult word for me in English is "recognize", which I often write it as "regognize"! When I read this word, I can see how, how it would be written! But now, without reading it from somewere, I write it wrong like "regognize" instead of "recognize", ore "somewere" instead of "somewhere" ! The same situation appears with Chinese Characters! Some Chinese Characters I have seen and read them very often, but my brain always strikes to write them correctly! Also the English word "recognize" I have read it very often! But to write it correctly let me struggles! Another difficult Chinese expression for me is 喜欢, where my brain often makes troubles! With an input-system it is not a problem to write 喜. I recognize it immediatly (immediately - the silent "e" in English let me also struggles very often!) ! I know the radicals but in 喜 it makes no sense for me! Writing 喜 from memory ...?! How?! Reading is always very easy, but writing is always difficult, also in your own custom language! But my brain sometimes works very strange! I often learn very complicated characters very easyly! Oh oh my brain struggles with the English word iisili or isyly again! It must be easily!!! To write easily is not very easy for a non native English speaker! Flash-cards don't help really. Repetitions is poison for the brain and makes you tired. Repetition is only effective when the context changes, such as when dealing with a matter. Here in this post I dealt intensively with the words recognition, somewhere, easily, immediately and 喜欢! I hope now, that these words don't let me struggles again in the future, when I write them!
Xihuan is easy to recognize for me because I have seen it so many times... But to remember to write it, I have to break xi down into the three vertical parts. Don't worry about the problems you have with English spelling; many native speakers also have them. Your approach of identifying problem words and practicing them is the best way to get them right.
At 4:30ish, when you are breaking down the character for 腿 (leg), you state that the radical on the left is for 'body part'...it looks exactly like the character for month, to me--Yuè 月...if what you say is correct (and I don't doubt you), this is why I find learning Chinese characters so difficult...many characters look sooo similar 😩
Du Chinese is really excellent. I use it together with LingQ and M Mandarim (the one with manhua)... But i still love writting as a way of learning the most, writte it sometimes and try to compose small phrases, and short paragraphs using the words learning. I didn't know Skritter :O thanks for the rec!
The key to remembering things well is to connect them with emotions and situations. You can make use of movies or books that you like. For example, if you enjoy reading Harry Potter, you can remember the word "隐藏" (meaning: hole up, hide)like this: Harry, feeling powerless, hid (隐藏) under the invisibility cloak and watched as Professor Dumbledore was murdered. The situation at the location (阝) or on top of the tower became urgent (急) as the Death Eaters rushed in. After being killed (戕) by the Dark Lord's servant (臣), Dumbledore fell onto the grass (艹) below.
Gracias querida, muy bella la explicación, me has dado un punto de referencia bastante significativo. saludes desde Colombia. and of course I can understand your classes. I´m not sure what is the features of your videos but they are amazing!. thank you.
Thank you for your great video. I enjoyed it as always!I am gonna get the app you recommended. When I watched this video I realized the stroke order of 睡 was different from how I always write and thought like I had been writing 睡 in wrong order for over 10years!?!? 😱Then I googled and learned sometimes Chinese stroke order and Japanese stroke order are different .I relieved!!!😂
I like the Skritter app. I like how it breaks down the radicals. I would like to use that app just so that I will be able to go and look at the radicals and figure out what they mean. I also would recommend that you use traditional Chinese when looking at the characters, because simplified Chinese does remove some of the radicals so it is easier to write, but it may not be as easy to understand if you go and look at the strokes.
Hey Shuo, recently stated to watch your channel. Thanks for the great content, especially the Chinese stories in HSK 3/4 and this well laid out video 😄! Keep it up!
I just started using Hack Chinese and also Zizzle for character learning. HackChinese is super. Like Anki, but specifically for Chinese. Zizzle has great potential BUT the SRS is buggy ... at least on iPhone. I still like using Zizzle though. I agree re: DuChinese. It's fantastic! One of my absolute favorite Chinese apps. And I have tried A LOT of them. I also like Mandarin Companion! The newspaper one (Charimans Bao) looks interesting but I prefer the fiction stories.
Oh my goodness! I'm so glad I found you yesterday and subscribed to your channel. This video is packed with incredibly helpful information. Xie xie, Shuo Shuo!
Really great video that you made! The examples are very vivid and the way that you demonstrate them are appealing and easy to understand! Sometimes with Chinese is just like learing other languages, you get start with reading, speaking and listening are in the other hand the most difficult parts, but it will come with the practice, once you are in the environment with native speaker, the other two parts will get improved so quick that you wouldn't be able to imagine! Keep it up:)
Your charm is irresistible!! You look energetic. You have a great smile. I love you!! I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships
Nice techniques, I mean the more you read the more you will learn Chinese, it can be painful throughout the way but hey you can watch videos with subtitles that can help as well. We are doing videos with Chinese and English subtitle and would love to get some support =) Thank you and good luck to all you Chinese learners.
What do you do if your native language is not English and if in your language does not exist much teaching material? The effort to learn Chinese through a foreign language is very like if you try to learn Mandarin through a Caucasian language!
@@TimBroganShaw Hungarian! I use google translate and it seems, it works very well. But you be always on the level of written Chinese like if you use books to study Chinese!, I watch the English videos to have an impression of spoken Chinese and also to train the ears for distinguishing the tones. There is a lot of English material for learning Chinese, but not in Hungarian. This is also very helpfully even you don't understand the English part very fully! I also try to write an own application where you are independent to every language!
Thank you for such an informative video. You manage to pack in so many valuable tips into just a few minutes. I have recently just started using the DU Chinese App that one of your followers recommended to me. I will be using your voucher codes to make some big savings:). I am pretty good at reading and remembering the characters and combinations but writing is unbelievably difficult for me. I never really tried typing directly from my keyboard yet but now that I have had some good tips from you I will try it out. 谢谢
If you're like me and always want to know "WHY??". Why is this character pronounced how it is? Why does it mean what it does? etc. While you won't find answers to that for every Chinese character, as some have been corrupted and/or simplified to the point where their structure has been lost, I've been loving the Outlier Chinese Pleco dictionary. It'll break down the components of the character and tell you what the sound component is, semantic components, empty components, corruptions, etc. After seeing enough of them, it's to the point now where seeing a character can often trigger my memory on its pronunciation due to recognizing the sound component.
I'm at the stage where I recognize the characters and know I should know what they represent, but am not consistently connecting to the meaning and the spoken words. I'm a little better at recognizing which character represents the Pinyin I typed. Right now I'm using a combination of the approaches you described, but I'm really lacking the key element - regular practice.
I think it's quite important to mention that if you write characters mainly on the screen you will not necessarily be able to write them by hand 🙂(of course not everyone needs it)
I have been using a stylus explicitly because I need to eventually be able to replicate the tablet writing on paper. My writing is very similar to a 4 year old's ATM 😁
Hi, I have just started learning chinese a few days ago and I have finished the pinyin:P should I learn how to write when learning a new word now or learn how to only talk about daily life stuff first. I wanna study in depth in the future) 😭 Thank youuuu
@@user-kr4ft7eu8sI dont know for sure either:')) But I'm currently combine both. I learn to speak basic words and learn how to write (from strokes to most common radicals, then characters...)
在6:23你说:“...they reached me out.”(“他们和我联系了”)。更为恰当和常见的翻译是:“They reached out to me.” 一起“reach out”这两个词意味着开始与某人的交流。在这两个词之间插入一个代词听起来很奇… “Reach out to (me/him/her/them/somebody)”…这是好的英语。 对不起我的中文不好 🇺🇸

Pleco has an excellent flash card component, it’s totally worth the money. It’s a great dictionary app too.
Yes! Sometimes writing is like one kind of meditation for me!
After being killed (戕) by the Dark Lord's servant (臣), Dumbledore fell onto the grass (艹) below.
you videos are very good and informative..... please continue making videos......dont stop 😀
谢谢师傅😀
真的吗!?我也刚知道!
Thank you for the recommendations. Will check out the chairman's bao!
Great!
WOW! That Du Chinese APP is fei chang hao! lol :-) This was a great video, thank you so much. Xiexie ni, qin ai de!
哈哈哈。。。我已经爱你。。。
Laoshi, u r wonderful teacher.
The beginning of the video where the guy character was trying to read was so accurate 😂 I’ve only been learning for 2 months at that is me
Your comedy sketches are the best bits, 我 xxxx 他 xxxx 不 xx reminds me of when I was in primary school.
Brilliant!! 👏 evergreen content. 谢谢!
Keep it up!
Thanks so much! You were clear with these useful tools.
Pleco dictionary and Skritter are a must for Chinese learning! Love your videos Shuo!
What do you do if your native language is not English and if in your language does not exist much teaching material? The effort to learn Chinese through a foreign language is very like if you try to learn Mandarin through a Caucasian language!
WCiossek what is your Native tongue? Pleco has German, French and Italian I believe. Failing that, google translate does a decent job!
Thank you for these recourses!!! This is so helpful!
thank so so muche dear teacher for this video lesson...!
謝謝妳的幫助. 我喜歡用繁體字因為更簡單的學... if you understand this I feel accomplished! 😆
你为什么认为用繁体字更简单的学?繁体字很美丽,但是我认为很难的学。
你是非常好老师。。。。。
我需要那样的一个老婆
哈哈哈哈😂
@@ShuoshuoChinese 哈哈哈。我现在在中国在找找一个中国女生😂😂
i'm a beginner but omg i related so hard to the part where she can read wo ta bu and some random radicals here and there 😂😂😂
Hello Teacher, is there any apps in which can write sentence and it will mark me my grammatical mistakes and correct it?
Fantastic channel! Thanks! I have found the Pleco dictionary indispensable in my studies.
Yes! I reason I didn’t recommend Pleco is because almost all my students already knew it!
谢谢
加油!💪💪💪
That skit @1:00 made me instantly subscribe lmao
我觉得这些方法对学古代汉语也有帮助。再说用中文来解释新的词汇,可是有可能需要更高的语言表达能力。
Wow! So much information! Good suggestions for students at every level. I use DuChinese, and will try the others.
谢谢你。我爱你的意思这些很帮我。
不用谢!
Very good and useful advice ! Take care your health to have enough rest. 谢谢老师。
:)
你的演出能力越来越棒!😂
谢谢,但在我的经验下,越多写越多学会,没有别的办法。有耐心是需要的。加油!!!
'Hang down' - probably the most hated radical by foreigners :D
I'm at the stage where I recognize the characters and know I should know what they represent, but am not consistently connecting to the meaning and the spoken words. I'm a little better at recognizing which character represents the Pinyin I typed.
Right now I'm using a combination of the approaches you described, but I'm really lacking the key element - regular practice.
thanks for the good information and lesson
This channel is perfect!
Chinese characters have tone information like in chinese pinyin?
I think it's quite important to mention that if you write characters mainly on the screen you will not necessarily be able to write them by hand 🙂(of course not everyone needs it)
I have been using a stylus explicitly because I need to eventually be able to replicate the tablet writing on paper. My writing is very similar to a 4 year old's ATM 😁
I love the Cuban music in this chinese lesson...😆
Thanks it was helpful
"And this is my third...... no I'm not afiliated" hahahahahaha 笑死我了哈哈哈
sigh...🤦♀️
xiexie, Shuoshuo! wo xianzai keyi xie zhongwen! 😄
Thank you so much! This video is super helpful.
Du Chinese 非常愉快,设计很好
Hi, I have just started learning chinese a few days ago and I have finished the pinyin:P
should I learn how to write when learning a new word now or learn how to only talk about daily life stuff first. I wanna study in depth in the future) 😭 Thank youuuu
I've finished pinyin too..and now I'm confused where to start with..😬 like should we start learning how to write first or to read first ?!!
@@user-kr4ft7eu8sI dont know for sure either:')) But I'm currently combine both. I learn to speak basic words and learn how to write (from strokes to most common radicals, then characters...)
@@linhdanluu7992 oh okay.. good luck ✌🏻
@@user-kr4ft7eu8s thank u, hope u soon find your effective way of learning
很有用的。真棒中文老师
老师, 感谢!我真的喜欢了这个视频
Help
Does this work with traditional?
Thanks for your video
在6:23你说:“...they reached me out.”(“他们和我联系了”)。更为恰当和常见的翻译是:“They reached out to me.” 一起“reach out”这两个词意味着开始与某人的交流。在这两个词之间插入一个代词听起来很奇…
“Reach out to (me/him/her/them/somebody)”…这是好的英语。
对不起我的中文不好 🇺🇸
Do you have a video that explains the difference between problem and question? I’m very confused because they are the same word in Chinese, as far as I can tell. Thanks in advance for your help.
Loving your video's and learning tons! I was wondering what is Joshua's Chinese name, cause I'm still trying to figure out mine... Don't get me started on my family name, still looking for the meaning of that as well
Thanks and keep making these video's.
Thanks
i like your chanel 'cause your videos are really useful✨
11:29 I have subscriptions to all three and fired off an email for you to Sean at The Chairman's Bao.
Hope that helps and good luck!

That’s so sweet 🥰
