  • Deep in Virginia, Tom comes across the eclectic collection of Nick, a Tri-Five Chevy enthusiast. After a lesson on the differences between the distinctive Tri-Five taillights, we check out an assortment of other cars, including a Nash Metropolitan, a 1950s Chevy funeral flower car, and a variety of vintage VWs. Afterwards, Tom revisits an old Barn Find Hunting friend with a very unusual and luxurious 1930s Dodge.

    15:14 - I'm not saying Tom doesn't know what he's talking about but what a lot of people see as survisors are actually frost shields. My grandfather pointed this put to me and he started driving when all these old cars were brand new. Almost no one had a garage to park their car. Maybe someone built some covered parking. But most cars stayed out doors all the time. The windshields were so flat as compared to today's cars, a shield over the top would keep frost and snow from settled on the glass, making it easier to get in and leave on a cold morning. Secondary benefit - served as a sunvisor.

    • @Danceswithempties
      @Danceswithempties 2 роки тому +4

      Agreed... A lot of these cars didn't go through a continuous freeze & thaw cycle like if they were garaged. And floor surfaces of an unheated covered area played a part as well. Their major enemy was tall grass if parked for a long period of time, as well as an accumulation of leaves and crap if parked outside & not cleared off.

    First thing I thought of was that Dodge had to have been a police car with that dual gen setup. Even today many ambulances have dual batteries and alternators to power all the lights, sirens and radios along with the auxiliary HVAC system for the box.

    I'll take the Corvair. I love those cars. And the Caprice is yummy! I had a '67 Bel Air station wagon and it was one of the best cars I had among the cars I have owned. A '60 Apache 10 long bed pickup and a '63 Imperial Le Baron are some of the other cars that did not disappoint me and i would love to have back in my ownership. As for the Tri5 set, i prefer the '55. One of my brothers loves the '56 and the other brother loves the '57.

    A 67 big block Caprice sedan could of have been a hell of a sleeper with the right rear end. I knew of one car in my home town that fit that bill & made a lot of money on the weekends... Once the car got known locally, it went out of town... LOL!

    1:20...That "396 Turbo Jet" emblem alone makes that '67 Caprice worth the price of admission! You say it was driven every day from 1967 to 2012? That's 45 years! WOWSERS!
    How many miles are on it?
    I had a '67 4 door Belair sedan in 1974 that I drove 13k miles in 3 months. It was one of the best cars I have ever owned, despite the serious power steering leak and less serious oil leaks problems.

I was living there at the time so I went to check it out for him before he brought a trailer down from Oklahoma to pick it up. I have a request for future episodes. I am a 4x4 enthusiast and I love old 4x4 iron. I often see 4x4 versions of American classic trucks and SUVs in your videos that get skipped over. Maybe you could do a video focusing on old 4x4s one of these days? Thanks Tom, hope to run into you on the hunt someday!

    When I was in High School in the mid 80's I worked at my brother-in-law's service station. Had a guy pull in in a 57 one day and told me to fill it up. Went straight to the license plate, it's in the trunk lid. Looked on the right side then back over to the left, no access. Looked at it for a minute, then walked back to the driver. He was smiling and asked if there was a problem. He then got out and showed me where the access was...

    If my eyes are right, the VW Fastback is a 71-73, note the small vents on the roof line as it sweeps back. And the Squareback would be a 70 as that is the first year of those light styles, bumpers and front trunk lid. It is also missing the roof vents that I mentioned before. The 70 model is identical to the 71-73 models, except for those little vents not being there.
    I learned this after confusing my 1971 Fastback for a 70 for the first 6 months of ownership.

    The Metropolitan, as you say, is based on a selection of Austin and later BMC components and appeared as an exotic thing here in the UK. No matter who designed the body, and Pinin Farina is alleged to had a hand in it, one thing it wasn't was rust proof. Boy, did they rot! By some miracle, some have survived, however.

    I'm a ford guy, but iirc, a 396 turbo jet was actually a 402. And as for the non-starting corvair, they lose compression when they sit. Pour marvel mystery oil down the intakes and let sit. My 60 rampside came back from the dead that way.
