I'm genuinely curious to know what took her from North Carolina to Cooper's Hill. My best guess is she saw it on UA-cam during lockdown & said, "Fuck it, whenever this shit is over I'm gonna go do that." And she not only did it, she fucking won too! Gotta respect that. A Canadian girl won the woman's event this year she didn't tell her mother where she was going when she flew over sometimes I think it's getting to be a world event
North Carolina people do this every weekend. But we don’t even use cheese, this is just how we go down hills.

Fun fact: law enforcement was concerned with the number of injures that happen each year due to the race but no one in the village claims to be the organiser so they have no one to actually accuse.

I can't think of any other racing format which devolves so quickly into absolute chaos the second it begins. It's like the human equivalent of a Top Fuel dragster blowing up off the start and launching bits of itself down the track. Fantastic.

I went there this year. It’s epic. First you see that giant cheese wheel absolutely flying down the hill like a giant canonball and bouncing like 5 metres into the air and then you see people rolling down in a very similar fashion and at not much lower speeds.
It’s an amazing sight.
I've watched the videos for years but can't even imagine what it must really look like in person. I'm sure a LOT is lost in translation.

@@Dynamikcheese Even though I've seen film from basically all angles I know that it doesn't even begin to convey how REALLY steep it is looking down. Like when one skis. "Oh that mountain doesn't look that steep". Then you're at the top looking down and absolutely frozen in panic thinking that if you're lucky it's just going to be a controlled fall down the slope.
I have seen this in person, the camera does not show the shear drop of the hill, honestly its crazy. fairplay to the nutters involved
it's incredibly funny because it doesn't seem to be that steep and yet people are flying like ragdolls
I know! I was there yesterday and even being a spectator was hard as everyone kept sliding down - it is stupidly steep though it never looks that bad in the videos!

I just watched Sam West's channel, he also did a video about this event. Sam is the guy in gold at 2:18, he had never done it before, and he said he only practiced for a week, and he ended up in 2nd place! BUT, there is a second race, going back up the hill, and he WON 1st on that one!

This has been going on since the Saxons, it’s a fantastic festival! The cheese race is obviously the best part but you can come to buy some lovely cheese, drink some beer from the local brewers and visit the local market. Really recommend!

I was talking to a friend a couple of months ago about how our home county - Gloucestershire - has the cheese rolling championship, the shin kicking championship, and it only lacks one other mental sport from being the barmiest triathlon in the world. My suggestion: there is a road to nowhere in my town, about 400m long, and wondered if the final event should be a blindfolded sprint from one end to the other, give it a catchy title, and watch the mayhem unfold. Call the whole thing the Fruitcake Triathlon with the slogan 'welcome to Gloucestershire'.
Finally, a region populated by people you can trust. Can you recommend any B&B?

Or because they're like 80. Anyway, I learned Judo, the first thing they teach you is how to fall and then you can go through hours of practice of you and your opponents just throwing each other and tumbling around and still be perfectly fine.
And if anyone replies to me with: ''there are mattresses to break your fall in martial art'' I can guarantee you that wet, soft earth like there is in the place where they do this competition is a lot softer than those crappy mattresses we use. They are frigging tinner than my arm.
