I love the wind guide system in Ghost of Tsushima, it eliminates the need to look at your map and encourages exploration (I wonder what Sucker Punch will do next? I want a sequel to that game, absolutely LOVED it, it was a brilliant way to send off the PS4 era)
I have absolutely no desire to ever play that game (I just don't like the genre personally, I find them boring and tedious, but that is just me) yet even I had to say that this system was really neat when I saw a video that described it. addendum: I can't agree with calling it brilliant though as it seems like a more refined version of a concept even Skyrim did with its clairvoyance spell. Neat, well executed, interesting, those I can agree with but it is far less original than many people seem to think.
Ghost of Sushima inspired by Akira Kurosawa, implemented composed movement as interactive dynamic environment for its navigational visual cue compass known as "guiding winds". lol talk about literally visual direction on a game.
True! Hate the fact you can't do much yourself for immersion: like grab some food, go to the gym, go to a bar for drinks etc. I desperately need a GTA SA in a GTAV style of graphics. Hope that GTA6 will be like this. Just blend RDR2 and GTA together and they're golden.
Shadow of The Colossus was pretty neat as well. The light mechanic guiding to the bosses and revealing their weakness, hints to the puzzles. Not to mention that game came out on PS2, pretty amazing experience.
I've never felt progression in a video game like I did when playing Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor. These two games make you earn your protagonist's badassery and I wish more games had this.
I would add Just Cause 2 to this list (and its sequels). The grappling hook and infinite parachute mechanics are freaking awesome! It's so much fun to hijack a plane, cruise around the island, jump out and skydive, then grapple hook into the ground and survive! I've spent many hours just fooling around in Panau. Also grapple-hooking people and objects together can create some hilarious situations.
Ghost of Tsushima is like a 15 out of 10 to me. I utterly love everything about it... I remember the first time I saw the wind mechanic during that like 20 minute game preview and I literally said out loud, "OH MY GOD THAT'S SO SMART, WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG TO THINK OF THAT?!" 2:02 I completely agree with this, in Dying Light 1 even after playing new game+ countless times and was completely maxed out I still had to consider whether I would traverse the world at night and I had a grappling hook that could attach to practically anything and hoist me up at neck breaking speed. In Dying Light 2 the only time I was wary about traversing at night was at the beginning of my first playthrough plus once you get the paraglider the threat of the world drops even more drastically.
I've never even heard of Gravity Rush, but that seems like a really cool game I'd like to try. I would love to see more games that have fully destructible environments like Red Faction as well. From a technical standpoint it's not impossible to do, maybe not even that hard if you design it right. I don't know if it would make sense for an RPG, but when I finally get around to it, I'm definitely going to try to fit it into the story.
not with the "modern game" thou, as 3A games push so much on the graphic nowaday, it is super hard to not have a super buggy 3A games with destruction. Recent games that did this is either a block like game or a color saturated 12 players game, which have their own unique way of solving the issue that 3A company will not risk to do
Thank you for the list! Ghost of Tsushima is one of my top 5 games, although the wind wasn’t that great to me. I still sometimes had a hard time telling the direction, but I am old and grew up with maps so that’s what comes natural to me. I still appreciate it though and I would love a true, single player, sequel.
Sunset overdrive is easily the most underrated game of all time, everything about it is amazing. The visuals, the soundtrack, the gameplay, the story, it all matches so perfectly and just creates one of the best gaming experiences of all time. Its so fun and good!
Loved gravity rush 2. And the nights in Dying Light were so amazing. I was terrified for much of the game but by the end I was risking it and challenging myself. So cool.
Love Rdr2 and the cores system and realistic gameplay. Yes I think the gameplay is incredible and no videogame has resonated with me as much. It's my favorite videogame ever from the gameplay, story, and graphics.
By far, the most notable day and night system for me was dragons dogma. It came out years ahead of dying light and on your first play through when you weren't sure what to do. It made you not want to be out at night.
it should also be mentioned that just like dying light, dragons dogma had a system that made it more dangerous to travel at night. especially given that some enemies and thus rewards from those enemies only spawn at night.
Thats crazy that game, especially with the dlc, is amazing and an experience. I hope they make a second one, ots terror and beauty doesn't hold your hand makes you feel good to figure things out.
I'm surprised dragons dogma isn't in here. The pawn system was 🔥 and using other players created partner who have more experience on different missions while letting yours go on journeys with other players to gain experience and knowledge on missions definitely hasn't been used in any other game prior
Sunset overdrive reminds me of one of my all time favourite games, Jet Set Radio Future. Came out in the early 00’s, it’s a rollerblading game set in Japan, and all the grinding mechanics are the same, one level is an entire grind on a roller coaster in a skyscraper district. The graphics and music is awesome, everyone check it out for sure!!!
In case you aren’t already aware, there is a really cool game that came out recently called HiFi Rush, which seems to be directly inspired by the Jet Set Radio series and Sunset Overdrive
I remember running around dying light one night...and another player dropped in as a monster. Hearing it off in the distance was freaky, esp since you knew they were there for YOU.
I've never played Sunset Overdrive but I'd suggest Jet Set Radio over it. It was the first time the grinding on rails mechanic was used and mastering required skill and was crucial to complete levels and beat rivals.
Since I’ve been playing it recently, how you maneuver in The Pathless. There are a bunch of floating talismans that you shoot with an arrow, and you gain a momentary speed boost, and full the energy meter for running. While in the air, the boost also gives you a bit of height, so you can stay up longer. Part of it too is that you have to time it just right for a perfect hit, which gives you more boost and energy
As I read the title - 1st thought was Sunset Overdrive. Not the best thing in the open world genre, but certainly a breath of fresh air, ideas, and good humor.
The way you held your gun dynamically to hide it from view in watchdogs 1 was so cool, not a system per se- but they still did it better than even hitman games.
I'm surprised you guys didn't pick any of the Infamous games they were revolutionary at the time. I feel like sunset overdrive was even inspired by them.
Gravity Rush is by far my favorite superhero game, I often describe it as the best superhero game that nobody played because I never hear ANYONE talk about it in conversations about these kinds of games so imagine my delight in seeing it on this list. The fist game was the first game I ever got a platinum trophy on just because I wanted to keep playing.
So glad to see Gravity Rush here. Going from the first one on the PS Vita to the second one on the PS4 was amazing. I love that games art style. And Kat's easily one of my favourite characters in gaming.
Torrent being available to summon or dismiss at a moment's notice in Elden Ring was probably one of my favorite mechanics. Not having to babysit a horse and worry about getting stuck on foot made exploring way more enjoyable.
Gravity Rush was included!! I never hear it talked about but it is easily one of my favorites for its traversal, unique combat, and beautifully strange story
Dying light is my favourite here. I remember reaching that lever of character progression, when I was lurking at night to find myself a good fight, that was amazing
Yes, ia m surprised that Red Faction Gurriella's destruction physics didn't get improved or gravitated to other games. This is what Crackdown 3 should have had in the main game and so many others. Wow, nothing has replicated it.
I think a great game that you kind of missed here was control. That game was amazing that had fantastic physics, beautiful graphics, and incredible gameplay. Gameplay. The levitate power, the weapon and its many forms, the bullet holes that left in the walls and the absolute destruction you could cause in the office. It was just all around a fantastic game.
When I saw GTA V (switching characters mid-mission), I wanted to mention Driver San Francisco. Later on, I noticed it was in the list as well 😅 Very accurate list IMO 👌🏻
The great thing about Gravity Rush's "flight" is that depending on how you control the powers changes how well Kat "falls with style". If you just shift willy-nilly she kinda ragdolls through the air; but if you control yourself and gravity well she actually does "flying" animations and not ragdoll; much like the character Raven, who always makes her gravity powers look badass. It's down to player input on whether Kat looks badass or not.
The reasons listed are really why i love Driver San Francisco so much as it really does feel like a fever dream at times (and is also quite challenging atleast for me at times)
I really like the 3 character switching mechanic that Rockstar Games did for GTA V. It's definitely unique and separates itself from other games, and it's pretty funny when you switch to a character and the character is doing something odd or random. I also like as mentioned that you can replay missions and get different perspectives from the different characters.
The nemesis system was so unique.. hard to comprehend first cz there is nothing like it.. but when you understand it.. its just mind boggling how they manage to do that in a game
For me personally I'd say once you get later in the game and you figure it out more, it actually becomes boring as hell. Group fights early in where one of the other boss orcs shows up with his gang were a big problem, but late game I'd run into them on purpose and not care if 4 or 5 other gangs showed up in the fight cause I could murder them all without breaking a sweat. It goes from "ohh that's awesome" to "boring, now what?"
Kingdom Come: Deliverance's combat was really unique and extremely fun once you got the hang of it, I remember hoping that I'd be ambushed during fast travel just so I can fight someone lol
Another good honorable mention for me would be Deadrising. The fact of the ticking clock and the sense of urgency. You could miss a story mission and keep playing or start all over and try again.
started playing Sunset Overdrive recently and I got an achievement called Overachiever. You get it for getting an achievement - I think this is the game for me
Outer Wilds was such a good experience, I had my own ridiculous crashes, seen coming and not. I had a moon swipe me, got sent spinning in the dark ship, it won't move, so I get out of the chair to go see the damage, and, well, the rest of the ship was just gone. I was floating free in space with my tiny space helmet. Little Big Solar System.

I have around 300 hours on it (base game and NG+ on PS4 and PS5 retrospectively) and I cannot recommend it enough. Platinumed it within like a week and never got bored. If another DLC or a sequel releases I’ll but it immediately. Currently waiting for GoWR spring update which should introduce NG+!
@@Alex-ug9wx I'm hoping the PC port will add some extra stuff but we'll see. I've yet to play it as I'm a PC gamer who doesn't own a console but I've heard good things about it, so the PC port is welcome for me.
@@cmdr.jabozerstorer3968 hope you enjoy it.
Following the yellow bird to items was pretty cool too in Ghost of Tsushima
2:02 I completely agree with this, in Dying Light 1 even after playing new game+ countless times and was completely maxed out I still had to consider whether I would traverse the world at night and I had a grappling hook that could attach to practically anything and hoist me up at neck breaking speed.
Recent games that did this is either a block like game or a color saturated 12 players game, which have their own unique way of solving the issue that 3A company will not risk to do
Dragons Dogma had a great night time cycle! It was so frickin' dark! And the castles and towns in the distance were beautiful at night.
Glad to see Gravity Rush get some love. Damn, i really enjoyed those games and wish there was a Gravity Rush 3.
Days Gone. One of the most underrated games of all time, one of the best single player games ever released and it stands out in todays PVP world
Underrated? It gets more hype than it deserves, IMO.
Shadow of the Colossus' sword light guiding system is also very interesting
By far, the most notable day and night system for me was dragons dogma. It came out years ahead of dying light and on your first play through when you weren't sure what to do. It made you not want to be out at night.
Dragon's Dogma and it's Pawn system are worth mentioning as well!
👍🏼part2
I gotta finish that game
Holy yes, as you can control the pawn behavior also. I see DD and Lost Planet as milestones for Capcom
Do you mean the implementation? Because, in essence, it is just a follower system with a multiplayer aspect.
it should also be mentioned that just like dying light, dragons dogma had a system that made it more dangerous to travel at night. especially given that some enemies and thus rewards from those enemies only spawn at night.
When folks ask me my favorite game, Outer Wilds is always my answer. Such an amazing game and its crazy it was originally made as a school project.
Thats crazy that game, especially with the dlc, is amazing and an experience. I hope they make a second one, ots terror and beauty doesn't hold your hand makes you feel good to figure things out.
@@mcbdllc2848 try Forgotten City, trust me, it has the same vibe. it's not as magical as Outer Wilds, but it really scratches that itch
I'm surprised dragons dogma isn't in here. The pawn system was 🔥 and using other players created partner who have more experience on different missions while letting yours go on journeys with other players to gain experience and knowledge on missions definitely hasn't been used in any other game prior
We'll see more if that works in the sequel when it's released. They did expand on it in the MMO, but unfortunately it was only playable in Asia.
Couldn't agree enough we need another Red Faction Guerrilla game. Would love a graphical upgraded version of the game also.
The movement mechanic in the witcher is so cool
5:50 was about to talk about the patent but you guys did nice
Gravity Rush has yet to receive the anime, series treatment.
It should be Studio Orange, they would do it justice, just like with Trigun Stampede.
You're a real one for ever mentioning the shadow of mordor (shadow of war in my opinion), also the wind in GOT was so innovative, i miss that game
I just gotta say the Gameranx intro is the best on UA-cam, and that sound is like a little dopamine hit.
I remember running around dying light one night...and another player dropped in as a monster. Hearing it off in the distance was freaky, esp since you knew they were there for YOU.
😅
Game has great use visual direction and audio cues
@@R3TR0JVN lol they trapped me in a drainpipe. There were no survivors. 🤣🤣
Sunset Overdrive, that was the name all this time...
I've been looking for this game for years, finally found it, what a relief, ty 🤝
And from what I can remember a really fun game, but my memory may be tricking me haha
The "guiding wind" mechanic appeared in Breath of the Wild before Tsushima, as the way to safely cross the Lost Woods.
Breath of the Wild's is like mapping your house. While Ghost of Tsushima is a map of a large city.
@@SakuraAvalon Agreed, but I was referring to the mechanic, not the scale.
@@the_box Was probably done before
As I read the title - 1st thought was Sunset Overdrive. Not the best thing in the open world genre, but certainly a breath of fresh air, ideas, and good humor.
I love Ghost of Tsushima so much
For me, the best looking game on the PS4
@@vinceely2906 i mean
Gowr and rdr2 are oretty good too
Masterpiece game
@@jinsakai2047 true. Witcher 3 also goat
Definitely were prototypes of Sunset and Spiderman especially Second Son
All GTA games + RDR2 + bully is the best open world game I know and love. No other games ever even comes close to my heart like this.😊
Another certified gameranx classic
Gravity Rush is by far my favorite superhero game, I often describe it as the best superhero game that nobody played because I never hear ANYONE talk about it in conversations about these kinds of games so imagine my delight in seeing it on this list.
The fist game was the first game I ever got a platinum trophy on just because I wanted to keep playing.
I love both shadow games I really want a shadow of War sequel
👍🏼👆🏻
Same. Talion is too badass
Yep..that was cool
Really unique mechanic! Goes on to list 3 different way to switch characters mid action
The real #1: Genshin
Nah
Ghost of tsushima. Not even a competition.
Bro get a life and go outside
Red Faction guerrilla deserves the love you guys give it. I love that game
Man I think this is the best gameranx videos I saw, such different games and mechanics, when my pc is done I'm gonna try them all out
I'm embarrassed at how many of these games I've never heard of until this Video. Love this channel!! Thank you!
State of Decay 1 and 2 need more love now. WATCH, as soon as 3 comes out, everyone is finally going to realize how amazing they are.
When I saw GTA V (switching characters mid-mission), I wanted to mention Driver San Francisco. Later on, I noticed it was in the list as well 😅 Very accurate list IMO 👌🏻
Dying light night missions were so awesome. Even at a high level I always felt nervous going out at night.
Sunset Overdrive is one of my favorite games. Always checking for a part 2
The reasons listed are really why i love Driver San Francisco so much as it really does feel like a fever dream at times (and is also quite challenging atleast for me at times)
middle earth shadow of war is so damn good, the nemesis system takes a good game into a masterpiece
thank you thank thank you for mentioning outer wilds. spent the whole video thinking about it. that game deserves all the love it can get :)
Couldn't agree more!
this is literally the best videogame related channel in youtube...👍
Sunset Overdrive! underrated, needs a sequel. the writers and the animators had fun and it shows.
Its Addictive as hell
For me personally I'd say once you get later in the game and you figure it out more, it actually becomes boring as hell. Group fights early in where one of the other boss orcs shows up with his gang were a big problem, but late game I'd run into them on purpose and not care if 4 or 5 other gangs showed up in the fight cause I could murder them all without breaking a sweat. It goes from "ohh that's awesome" to "boring, now what?"
Love my daily dose of Gameranx amazing content guys love the work you guys do always need mooreee
🤝
Love you Gameranx. Always coming in clutch when the day sucks❤
🤝
As soon as this video started I thought of shadows of war. And you bring it up! Currently playing through it again! Love that game.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance's combat was really unique and extremely fun once you got the hang of it, I remember hoping that I'd be ambushed during fast travel just so I can fight someone lol
👆🏻
Another good honorable mention for me would be Deadrising. The fact of the ticking clock and the sense of urgency. You could miss a story mission and keep playing or start all over and try again.
Another great mention to add to Outer Wilds, is 12 Minutes w William Dafoe doing the voice of the antagonist
👍🏼
started playing Sunset Overdrive recently and I got an achievement called Overachiever.
*_Sunset Overdrive_* was one of the most enjoyable Games I played way back on the Xbox One 😍 _Highly_ recommended for how well the Movement System was done.
Here’s an idea. “Disappointing” sequels that are still awesome
Thanks for your suggestion
Red Faction G holds a special place in my heart as well, definitely a timeless classic ❤
Another nice bonus is Tunic... The tutorial in the game its actually a huge part of the story and the mechanics.
I love you guys at Gameranx.. you guys never disappoint.. I'm a happy follower since 2016 😊❤
Thanks for all your support
It's always nice to see someone mention Gravity Rush. I'm still hoping for a 3rd game one day. Some day...
