I taught English in Japanese middle schools. The high schools are stratified, which one you go to depends on your entrance exam scores. This high school obviously has a lot of "good kids" who did very well on entrance exams. You can tell by the fact that they're all wearing regulation uniforms and not making alterations or dyeing their hair to get the "kinpatsu" look. At schools with much easier entrance requirements you'll find the kids with dyed hair, loose socks, miniskirts, etc.

Mostly they bring their lunch from home in Japan. His school is probably rich because they have international students. So they also have a good cafeteria.
Still, a standard Japanese high school cafeteria is a bit better. A little expensive but you can but udon, fried chicken and other basics.

I love how everyone looks so nice and happy like a really good community. And then in British schools 5 people have probably been shanked in that one room
That's just the outside of it. There's also a LOT of bullying because kids (and adults) are always expected to do the right thing. If you step out of line you are pushed down hard. So everyone's always kinda walking on eggshells. It's really stressful being Japanese. But it's 10/10 to live there as a foreigner because you get all the benefits of people obeying the rules all the time (politeness, cleanliness, no crime, etc) without having to actually obey them all yourself. And then you stay there longer and start to know the rules and feel the same pressure, heh... It's a great place but it's not perfect. Every place has its problems.

Unless you're different, in which case you would have been bullied mercilessly. My ex went to a Japanese middle school, for instance, and just because she couldn't speak Japanese (at that time) she was picked on constantly. It's not a perfect system. Here the bullying is just institutionalized, and even sanctioned by teachers.
