What a beautiful protest. It's like an art installation in its own right. I agree with Nina. It's all our duty to reflect/ witness/ mirror the times we are living in, with our minds bodies souls... yes, and with our respective crafts too, whether we be artists, writers, musicians, lawyers, economists, mothers, fathers, teachers, gardeners, GALLERISTS and on. It's a time to speak up, to stand against oppression, and hats off to you all for doing so here.
Zarina Muhammad speech v good. Well done Thanet 4 Palestine and the artists and workers that have taken a stance instead of protecting their careers. Turner Contemporary need to have some dialogue and show some integrity, especially as they took no time at all to wave the Ukrainian flag and make a statement about that situation.
Wow - such a moving protest. ❤ We know from (recent!) history that pressure from cultural institutions has a powerful part to play in defeating apartheid. Turner Contemporary and other major art instutions in the UK have a responsibility to speak up, boycott, and condemn this genocide! I believe we will see a free Palestine 🇵🇸
"it is an artist's duty to reflect the times they are living in" - Nina Simone That's one person's opinion. There is no such duty. More correctly it is a citizen's duty to advance a more humane and civilized society. The tight coupling of political concerns with art, artists, and art institutions is a dubious proposition. To the degree that any citizen decides to protest injustice, they might suggest and model an alternative solution that is more substantial than "FREE [fill-in-the-blank]". This is wholly empty of actionable substance and would accomplish absolutely nothing constructive. This kind of virtue signaling is self-serving and the reason nobody "listens" to anything being said - its a ambient noise devoid of serious veracity. Artists are not social engineers and anyone confused about this should stop pretending to represent artists and pursue a something-something-studies professional trajectory instead. You are mistaking silence for the snore of boredom.
