- A sizzle reel from 2011 for Shane Carruth's legendary unmade masterpiece, 'A Topiary', produced by Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher. Set to Hans Zimmer's 'Time' from 'Inception'. From the director of 'Upstream Color' and 'Primer'.
2013:
”He kept lowering the budget, getting it down to about $14 million, but even that couldn’t secure an investor. “If this were the ’70s, people would be throwing money at him,” Soderbergh says. “It’s just a different time now.”
2016: everyone goes crazy about kids in sci-fi. Strange things and more ande more after. Great job Soderbergh.
On one hand millions of dollars are spent to make worthless MCU crap. And this Marvelous project of a master filmmaker didn't get any fundings. It breaks my heart knowing that this was his dream project.
Heartbreaking that it couldn’t be made
It's incredible to finally see some of the renderings beyond the Chorus that appears in UC. They are amazing. However, it's kind of sad to watch.
Don't really know what to say. If this indeed is the last we'll see of it, then it is truly one of the great tragedies of cinema.
unmade masterpiece
I'm not sure what part is more tragic: that Shane Carruth faced so many obstacles to making his unique art, or that such an artist unmade himself so cruelly.
or that women ruin everything
wym unmade..
@@JohnBaigerCarruth sabotaged himself. Typical overinflated ego.
@@chocmilk10 and you're the kind of pathetic boot-licker that believes everything women say. Truly pathetic. Shane is a genius, and as usual, a worthless woman comes in to take down a genius. Thanks again, 2020s
@@chocmilk10 nah, he got set up
It had always been around,
Always hidden.
In glints of sunlight,
Hidden in the shape of bone.
Until after a while, someone notices.
And then he can't stop noticing.
The patterns.
How many cars come through here?
How many people?
What about that direction?
How many birds perch here or there?
Is the lightning speaking?
Is there information in the rain?
And before long, it points them to build something.
And before long, it tells them how to build it.
But they can never really know what it's trying to be.
Then the fighting,
The Quarreling,
The who-owns-what?
Until the great machine is stolen.
Buried.
By the time the boys get a hold of it,
There's not much left to do but turn it on.
And out
Comes
Everything.
All the pieces they need,
To create things that move like animals,
Like creatures,
Or Robots.
But not.
And being boys,
They can't help but think of something they've been given,
As something that they've earned.
When the men come looking for their belongings,
They may not recognize them anymore.
of all the things I wish I could manifest, this film that would add another huge piece to Shane's puzzle, would be one of them.
This would’ve been one hell of a film. The script was so well written, that I was able to actually visualize every scene. It’s almost as if I have seen the movie.
How'd you get a copy of the script?? Is it available online?? I'd REALLY love to read it!! 😀
Disregarding the footage, the Zimmer score with the girls description of events is awe inspiring.
God what could have been.
Hey, since you reposted this from his old Vimeo post, do you have archives of any of his other Vimeo videos? I've been trying to find archives ever since he deleted his account.
Brilliant idea for a film. It really should be made.
Damn right!
I didn't realize this was Carruth's trailer. The irony is that the concept implies intimidating genius, but the trailer really lays it on thick that he intended to do a Spielberg kind of kid's adventure, which is the impression you get from the brief footage in Upstream Color without knowing the plot details.
This is a fan trailer
Soon ai will make this film...
If I win a 200 Million powerball I'm gonna Executive Produce this. Actually I'll probably be assistant Exececutive Producer to Carruth.
no you give money to shane and he does movie stuff
That’s what I said.
wouldnt suprise if horizon games took some stuff from it. some similar ideas.
2 minutes 24 that are better than most films of the past 40 years.
It will never be made and
the genius locked inside the mind of its creator will likely never be seen or heard from again.
A true loss to cinema and civilisation.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Those 2 minutes and 24 seconds are made up of the best movies of the last 40 years.
who knows maybe it wouldve sucked major ass
The trailer seems to expand a little for every time I watch it; i'm beginning to think i've got the plot of this never-movie figured out
Bad ass !!! Oh how I wish Shane could have made this film. It would have been a masterpiece.
Good thing remembrance of earth’s past comes out this year, it’s a good compensation.
did chris nolan rip this off for tennet?
Tenet bears no resemblance to A Topiary. I do believe Nolan was slightly inspired by the mechanics in Primer though, but that's just me guessing. There has been no ripping off between the two.
@@hastobe303has Nolan ever indicated knowing about Primer?
@@rv.9658 Not that I know of. It seems like his kind of thing though. I would be surprised if he hadn’t seen it. Nolan was just starting to get big when Primer won Sundance.
@@rv.9658 are u seriously saying u think its possible nolan hasnt heard of carruth? like, do u think they live in different planets?
So this was it? I was looking for a real trailer.
@@grill6411 I heard that he was gonna direct one last film? From Wikipedia: "In 2019, in an interview Carruth claimed he's working on "a massive thing" and will leave the film industry once that project concludes."
Why would there be a trailer before the film is even shot
I come here when cinema lets me down
i love just listening to the audio on this
Wait so is this actual dialogue from the script?
No, these words don't appear the in the script. It's a sort of dramatic, ambiguous summary of the story.
Carruth has written the narrative himself for the trailer.
Maybe this could do well as a limited series? 🤔
💙
Mostly just a mash of Jurassic Park, ET, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter. And Tales From The Loop? Good job.
It's a ripomatic to get the look of the shots. The script doesn't feel like any of these (except maybe Tales from the Loop).
Is that Euclid?
- Who are you to live in all these many forms
too bad he's allegedly an abuser, this looks really good!
What a load of rubbish your saying, proof ?
Yeah, this would have been a crazy movie to sit through, but if more allegations surface, we all should forget about this movie.
@@ericbrown5588 Fuck that, allegations can be made my anyone, if theirs proof then yes, but until then; innocent until proven guilty.

The thing about Gen Y-Z leftists is... you're all inferior to your ambitions. You simply can't engage with a piece of art on it's merits as a creative professional's artifice. You can't test the veracity of a premise or an epistemological claim. You don't know how to interrogate the moral status of a thing, or do any kind of symbolic quantitative analysis. You can't even summon an aesthetic judgement.
Where an intelligent person would have brought some critical machinery to bare upon a film... This IQ87, pearl-clutching bullshit, where you rhetorically demand things be shunned like a scarlet letter, is the only intellectual resource _you people_ have to draw upon. _As if_ the legitimacy of a piece of art _or ANYTHING_ was contingent upon it's creator satisfying the requirements of your primitive folk-morality.
And it's always the usual cast of inferior gene-trash you're demanding we need to eject all art for, in order to secure their comfort.
@@stephenholloway9395 Amy Seimetz filed a restraining order against him, he's been on trail multiple times, he kept acting incredibly hinged for years. He needs help, clearly not a healthy person.
Oh, look, someone's used Zimmer's Time for a trailer...again...yawn.
As far as I know, this is the trailer he used to show to empty suits what A Topiary would look like, so they'd throw money at it.
I feel as if the choice of score shows he knows that audience.
the pitch augmentation voiceover isn't quite _there_ yet, e.g. still more _chipmunk Jodi Foster_ than _affecting-childlike_
Bro, the voiceover is one of the few original parts of this trailer, written by Carruth, narrated by a real kid.
its an actual kid
well theres scenes from contact in the trailer
Where is the voice-over from? It's so familiar
It's an original narration made by Carruth for this. Dunno who the kid is tho.
@@kevin-ki5uq Thanks, that makes it even better.
Its an ao voice btw
@@kevin-ki5uq her name is Zoe Locke
@@HorribleHomeVideo no
Good mash-up, but sadly.. It's note Carruth's film dont fool the crowd
It's literally edited by Carruth himself to give an idea of his vision and for potential investors. The voice over and the cgi shots of choruses are original.
