I live in the Barbican in the City of London in London England. Look up the Barbican if you are interested but it was the post world war 2 architectural project build in the City in the 1960s. The bathrooms have been slowly reaching the end of their lives/shininess eg the cast iron baths could go on forever but the enamel eventually dulls and thins. Anyhow, I refurbished my Mum’s place in 2004 but left her downstairs loo as was, fitting new toilets in the upstairs bathrooms. I can tell you that those loos never rushed properly, have been a compete pain and I am now refurbing again and will be be getting new ones (hence looking at this video). The old faithful downstairs is staying because decade after decade it reliably flushes and does its job.
It is stated that the pressure assist toilets are noisy but that didn't seem to loud to me and it was quick. This 50 year-old toilet I am using now, which I am watching this video to replace, takes forever to flush with very low power. I even have to hold the lever down for maybe 8 seconds for it to completely flush because the flapper will not stay up.
I'm pure amateur, but the flapper may fall because the tank is emptying slow. I'd replace the flapper and be sure the pull chain is not a link too long. (check the chain first.)
Check for mineral buildup in it before replacing it. If that doesn't work, adjust the water level to the highest setting possible. Do a video and I can tell you what's wrong with it.
Nice video. What brand and model do you have in YOUR home (if you installed them)? I would imagine that's what we should all buy. We put Totos in our current house and LOVE them. We are looking for three new toilets for our new build, but Totos have skyrocketed! I suggested to husband "let's take our Totos with us" and guess what he said??? No!!!! Thanks for the great vid.
I'd like to go to a second hand store and maybe find a Kilgore 108 or 109 from the 60s or early 70s, with that iconic trapway and those dual siphon jets. That's what I'd like! 😊😊😊😊😊
The new category 4 toilets flush much better than those older toilets! The 3" flush valves on a high end HET of today removes 1,000 grams of solid waste every time. American Std. makes a unit that does this, as does Kohler. Now Toto is an excellent toilet too, but may cost more. The nut to crack is 1,000 gram removal! The Toto has a SaniGloss glazing that is supper smooth, does not stain like cheaper glazing. The uniformity of china and glazing is one issue, another is the "soft close seat" a nice feature. The flush handles are another issue, some are mushy, others are well defined and are soothe. 1.5 seconds is all that is needed to suck the bowl empty with an HET toilet. Happy flushing.. Greg
American Standard Champion model 4266 toilet sucks! parts were so expensive almost like getting a new one, parts are sold separately and it works only with original parts
Thanks. good info. I've got 2 Gerbers that are good, but there's a couple of little things that are easier to order than to drive across town. I'm debating replacing one with a "comfort height" and I dunno whether to go back to the Gerber (Clogs are REALLY rare) or Am Std or Kohler. Still dunno. I think I want to get a 1.6 gal to push stuff to the street collector, not just halfway there.
We know apps, we know how to operate video games, we know sports game rules, we know pop song lyrics, TV show actors names and history, all about Princess D, on and on. I suggest toilets are more important, or are they something we take for granted...We are entitled to a good flush, right? Any way, think of me next time ....
I always follow Al Bundy’s advice on buying toilets. Al says,…..the only toilet worth having is a Ferguson. All of the others just seem like they are apologizing to you when you flush them.
Design matters! many gravity toilets remove the max waste amount of 1,000 Gr, (2.3 pounds). Pressure assist just make more noise because the water velocity is much higher
All tanks and bowl sets can be different, do not mix different tanks on bowls. Toilets come in a set. The elongated seats and round seats have standard bolt spacing both thew same...
I saw a video for American Standard where they showed all the things that could be flushed by maybe their most powerful model but shouldn't. Have you see this including the ability to suck about 8 golf balls down in one flush? Can a pressure assist really flush all this volume and weight?
I recently purchased a new basic American Standard toilet and am impressed with the quiet flush and the smaller use of water than my old model. I have noticed a decline in my water usage and a smaller sewage bill. It flushes great.
Toilet openings? If you mean the floor flange the toilet bolts to, there is 3 or 4 inch dia. both use same bolts and same wax seal. If you mean bowl shape, two shapes exist, round/regular and elongated shapes. All of the mentioned is same coast to coast..
Pay a dump fee to get rid of an old crapper (toilet)??? Just put it by the curb with a free sign on it. It will be gone in a flash. A lot of people don't like the low flush, multiple flush, easy to clog crap-ers. I quit using toilet paper the other day. Bought a Blue Bidet 3500, after hosing myself off I just sit there another 5 minutes and contemplate the meaning of life while I air-dry. Just doing my bit for the environment.
Greg Chick, When can I get that ADA Arm chair support on that toto brand elongated toilet mentioned in this video? Please, provide a link to where I can get it.
The local hardware store is your best choice, go there get the equivalent. Models are changing part numbers faster than spam....Go to store, search ADA or "Chair height" AKA comfort height , look at a 5 star toilet and get it...
Hi Greg, I'm the owner of a Toilet review website, I also provide fix-it info too, want to know if I can pay you to make a few featured videos for my site? Thanks!
Why do most of the new toilets show the curved trap as part of the design? Is there some functionality there because to me that is unattractive to look at.
I would not pay $25 to get rid of a toilet. I would take a sledge hammer to break it up and pay a few $$ at the dump to get rid of it.Toilets are ceramic so it would not take much to break it up.
@@OCC_Plumbing_and_Restorations Happy New Year ! Happy New Toilet Batman ! Are talking about the outside garbage container , ( the one you wheel out to street curb). Just watch out for your 00 eyes.
Great advice delivered in a no nonsense manner! Thank you for taking the time to explain this not very glamorous but important household fixture.
3 inch flush factor?
WOW, finally somebody talked about the internal workings of a toilet. Thanks

New subscriber here. I am a homeowner (retired engineer) and appreciate your advice.

Thank you so much this was very informative I wish you lived in Colorado. Thanks

How can a gravity model possibly flush the same volume of a pressure assist model? I don't get it.
The design of the flush and the size of the trapway.
And water usage.

My concern is toilet sweating in hot weather , i have insulated the tank , but it still sweats . Is there a better brand that address that ?
Okay! I’m in love! Would you be interested in a really cute 76 year old green eyed Gramma in Texas? Lol 😘

I think those are the ones that blow up.

Why do most of the new toilets show the curved trap as part of the design? Is there some functionality there because to me that is unattractive to look at.
Pure function, there are toilets that shape the bowl to hide that, but they cost more...
I really liked the 25 dollar fee!
Buy the Lowes recommended toilet for $100.
Hey, you claim to be an expert, but have you ever actually used one of these things? Do you even own one?
Used a toilet?

@@TheGregchick I see. Carry on and keep up the good work.
Break up the old one and put it in a trash can
carefully, razor sharp...
I prefer a lower toilet
That's a valid opinion. The taller ones are usually put in master bath that's rarely used by kids. But you like what you like.

I just break them up into small boxes and the trashmen take them.
You don't need a sledge hammer , a regular hammer will dodo the job. just put the pieces in the garbage

dont buy a new toilet stick to the old toilets they flush better
