Based on written history, kerambit originated from Minangkabau (Indonesia), then was brought by Minangkabau migrants centuries ago and spread to various regions, such as Java, the Malay Peninsula and others. According to folklore, the shape of the kerambit was inspired by the claws of the tigers that roamed the Sumatran forests at that time [2]. Weapons in most parts of the archipelago were originally agricultural tools designed to sweep the roots, collect rice stalks and threshing equipment. However, unlike kerambit, it is deliberately designed to be more curved like a tiger's hoof, after seeing pets using their claws, this is in line with the Minangkabau philosophy which reads Alam takambang to be a teacher. Kerambit eventually became famous through the Southeast Asian trade network to countries, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Thailand. History books in Europe say that soldiers in Indonesia were armed with kris on their hips and spears in their hands, whereas kerambits were used as a last resort when other weapons were exhausted or lost in battle. Kerambit looks very manly, because it is a short distance ban which relies more on courage and martial skills. Minang martial arts warriors, especially tiger silat warriors, are very adept at using this weapon. The Sulawesi Bugis warriors were also known for their expertise in wearing kerambits. Currently kerambit is one of the main weapons of silat and is generally used in martial arts.

@@chukyuniqulI can tell you haven’t had any knife combative training. It’s not the same as empty hand. There’s no way to train against a “resisting” opponent, as your practice partner isn’t actually getting cut. All knife combatives (at least the 3 that I’ve trained extensively in) all involve “combination” techniques, as shown in this video. A “resisting” opponent that isn’t actually experiencing the cut progression will probably “win” and make the instructor look dumb to other people that are dumb. But when your meat is getting sliced literally against your bones, you will be the moving in the most compliant way imaginable.
@@JonCampo91 I love how you completely miss the fact that my reason for saying the opponent is resisting isn't that "they don't give opposite force" but that they LITERALLY MOVE IN SLO-MO compared to the knife-wielder. I get that a knife strikes faster than a fist because a knife cut requires less force, but that doesn't explain how one guy takes like three actions in the time the other guy does only one and barely reacts to what his opponent is doing, which is pretty fucking different from what someone would do when faced with a knife-wielding opponent.

What always amazes me, and surprises me, is how many "weapons" got their start as humble farming tools, the world over. It may be a tool, It may have a humble origin, It may be intended for agriculture, But most importantly; It will keel.
Weapons are expensive. If you are a farmers( which most people are back then), then farm tools are the best things to fight with. Since the world was very dangerous back then
Well, the reason for that is probably that in history it used to be poor people like farmers who were oppressed by wealthy land owners and those were the only weapons they had access to. hell, historically speaking, that is how most martial arts actually began the world over, totally independent from each other...
Yes. It is just a tool. The mind of the individual wielding it is the weapon. Case in point, I bet if you gave Doug a hairbrush, he would find a way to kill with it if his life was in danger.

In modern Carambit , people say carambit from Tiger Claw. Its not wrong either. Because there is many form of Silat. And the move Marchaida show here is from Silat Elang/ Eagle Silat. Honestly no. Pulling the trigger is faster than him no matter what he thinks he can do. Actual combat situations don't have time for this super kung fu shit. Its who lands a strike first, and the guy with the gun probably got this.
@@renatoimperatori5289 probably yes but actually no if you are at least 1 meter away from the guy who has a gun bcuz you can possibly evade it if you know how to do it(I learned it from my SD teacher)
@@godeater6640 Yeahhh, don't ever try to evade a firearm at close range, your best bet is to get off of the centreline while pushing the firearm in the opposite direction, then keeping that firearm away from you at all times while trying to subdue your assailant. That won't work if they know what they are doing, because you will likely already be dead due to them having a strong firing position which you cannot control so easily, and will probably have already fired a shot when you start moving towards them. The absolute best chance of dealing with someone with a firearm is hoping they are untrained, they approach you to get something or put the gun to you, and then being able to single leg, hopefully moving under the gun while keeping your arm on it, take them down and control both arms with one leg and arm, then render them unconscious with the other as fast as possible in that position. That is the absolute optimum scenario, and it won't work against anyone who actually knows what they are doing, much like a knife combat scenario, if someone has a gun with bad intentions, you are probably going to get hit with it at least once, at least you can effectively run away from a knife if you have created space and have prevented yourself being cornered, can't do that with a gun. Most "self-defense" instructors have never been in an SD scenario, and the ones that have often combatted untrained, unarmed opponent's, the military often teaches these techniques because the opponents they face are never well trained enemy soldiers (against whom trying such a thing would be suicide, you surrender and hope that they take you as a prisoner of war unless you have some clear advantage apparent to you) in this day and age, also it's a confidence booster, but confidence isn't always a good thing in such a scenario. Don't let yourself get into a situation where an individual has a gun trained on you, and vote for better gun regulation, that is the absolute best way to defend yourself against a firearm.
Love this man he is a true Martial Artist notice how he never says “this how” or “this is why” when he talks about what the part of the knife is used for because that stagnation of thought ruins combat arts

Wow, I could always tell Doug has some experience with pentak silat but he hides it well in the Forged In Fire show. Never knew he was a professional master. I always enjoyed his cut/kill test on the show, by far my favorite and tastiest part of the FIF show. Watching him slice into the carcasses of meat always made me hungry and gave me an idea what I want to cook for dinner.

Really wish I could have learned some martial arts from Doug personally but I know that'll never happen in my lifetime he is a legend and it would be an honor and a privilege just to learn something of him
Idk mate, I'd like to see his technique at work against a resisting opponent. Literally all his moves are done at a faster tempo than his opponent. And the fact he needs that to be effective while being armed and his opponent isn't kinda speaks to how bad of a martial artist he is or how useless the karambit is.
Not true he dose travel demos and if your in his home stairs there you can enroll at his gym he dosent teach every class couse traveling but you’ll learn his form and he dose try to lead a few class of eatch rank

It may be a tool,
It may have a humble origin,
It may be intended for agriculture,
But most importantly;
It will keel.

Even marcaida said that he also learn carambit at Merpati Putih Silat in Indonesia and also by one of Indonesia Air force Instructor.
Base on the people of Minangkabau ( Indonesia ), Carambit is the word by tagalog and melayu language.
The word came from minangkabau language _
The Original name is Kurambiak ,
Kurai mean Curve and Ambiak mean Take it.
So Curambiak means to Deliver a Curve attack and then take it.
The modern carambit is base on Silat Harimau ( Tiger Silat ).
But Kurambiak from minangkabau Indonesia originally from Silat Elang ( Eagle Silat ) because is originally from how eagle hunt the prey by that curve claw.
In modern Carambit , people say carambit from Tiger Claw.
Its not wrong either.
Because there is many form of Silat.
And the move Marchaida show here is from Silat Elang/ Eagle Silat.
In indonesia military ,
The Instructor usually have the knowledge in both type Eagle Silat and Tiger Silat.

@@renatoimperatori5289 probably yes but actually no if you are at least 1 meter away from the guy who has a gun bcuz you can possibly evade it if you know how to do it(I learned it from my SD teacher)
@@godeater6640
Yeahhh, don't ever try to evade a firearm at close range, your best bet is to get off of the centreline while pushing the firearm in the opposite direction, then keeping that firearm away from you at all times while trying to subdue your assailant.
