History of the Handguns of Colt: ep05: The 1851 Navy

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 5 кві 2021
  • After the Civil War, revolvers using fixed metallic cartridges came into widespread use. The Colt Navy remained in production until 1873, being replaced in the Colt line with what would become one of the manufacturer's most famous handguns, the Colt Single Action Army (also known as the Peacemaker and Colt 45).
Total production numbers of the Colt 1851 Navy Revolver were exceeded only by the Colt Pocket models in concurrent development, and numbered some 215,000 domestic units and about 42,000 produced in the Colt London Armory.

A few corrections. The Hickok Tutt fight took place in Springfield Missouri not St.lewis. I simply misspoke there, also it is colonel John s. Mosby not General MOSBY. thanks for watching.

wait... didn't the grey ghost carry a pair of LeMat, and a pair of 1860 Army revolvers? I know Lee, Sherman, and Grant carried the 1851, while Custer used the 1861 model.

@@jakubfabisiak9810 you are correct that he did own the lemats however the book mosbys rangers by James j. Williamson Specifically states that on many occasions he carries the 51 navy. I assume it was just less awkward in battle.

1851, the year a yacht race in England was won by a yacht named America. That silver won (plus a little more) was melted down and turned into the Americas Cup yacht racing trophy. This trophy is the oldest trophy in history still in compitition today. It began in 1851.

I found one of the "case hardened" piettas, and its magnificent so far.. at 50 yards I hit the target with 2 shots (high and left of center) within an inch of each other. And that was standing. I was shocked when I saw the target. A fantastic 1851 for the price.. get one if you can. Now I want a conversion cylinder so I can shoot 45 long..

@@Real11BangBang i am a reloader but not for 38 special. I am curious about what you state about the hollow base bullet, though, just for the sake of learning. Will the hollow base actually expand and grab the rifling on its way out? Is that the purpose of the hollow base bullets (like Berry’s makes)? I always assumed that it was for those who desire a longer OAL.
So when one buys a 38 special cylinder for their Uberti to convert, is there always going to be an 0.018” difference between the chamber diameter of the cylinder and the barrel diameter? If so, any idea on why the two are made with different diameters? Thanks.

Not St. Louis, but Springfield, Mo. Supposedly, my great, great grandfather witnessed this event. He was around 13-14 at the time and was in town that day with his father getting supplies. They were on the northeast side of the square and heard only one shot. As this story was passed down, it included Bill resting his right pistol on the left arm and firing. When visiting the Springfield square, there are markers in the street and sidewalk where both were standing. Also, supposedly, each man stood sideways to narrow the profile of being a target. Tutt was hit in the right side and the bullet traveled thru his chest to strike him in the heart. Luck or not, one heck of a shot for a pistol.

The Doctor who examined Tutt's body stated at Hickok's trial that the ball / bullet from Hickok's revolver struck Tutt under the right armpit, breaking the 5th rib, passed thru the heart and both lungs, then exited the body, breaking the 5th rib on the left side. Such penetration at a range of 75 yards makes it almost certain Hickok had loaded his Navy Colt with combustible cartridges firing a conical bullet. Hickok's military service would have made him very familiar with revolver combustibles, and likely his military connections allowed him easy access to a military supply of the revolver combustibles. While the 82 gr 0.380 round ball over a full chamber of good fine grained sporting grade black powder can achieve velocities around 1200 fps and hit with extreme destructive effect at close ranges, the round ball has poor aerodynamics and loses more than 30% of its velocity at 100 yards. The pointed revolver conicals of the mid-19th Century, had excellent aerodynamics and would retain nearly 90% of muzzle velocity at 100 yards. British Ordnance tested a Colt Navy in 1857, using the 140 grain conical cast by the Colt mold, and reported that the Navy Colt could achieve accurate deadly hits on a man at more than 200 yards, which astounded the Ordnance board, as such long range accuracy and effectiveness was not expected from a pistol.

If Hickok were actually resting his right pistol on his left arm, that would make a quick shot almost impossible. Assuming his right arm was extended then it would be either near or completely impossible to do that standing sideways, for his left arm to be able to be in such a position to be able to be rested on by his gun. If he was standing sideways shooting his right hand gun with his right hand resting on his left forearm in the other direction, which would not have been the “proper” way to shoot at the time, because his right arm would not be extended, that seems very unlikely for that reason. ALSO, unless he was cross eye dominant, it would be extremely difficult to see his sights or perhaps impossible. For those reasons, I would say that he either was not standing sideways OR he did not rest his gun on his opposite arm. Given that Tutt was proven to be standing sideways, I believe that Hickok would have been doing the same, but resting his gun on his left arm seems extremely unlikely.
