  • When my kids were younger, I believed that I should use my skills as a documentary filmmaker to create what I saw was a new kind of home movie. Very real. What I hope future generations of my family will enjoy watching.
What I primarily have from my family are 8 mm silent movies and still photographs with strange notes written on the back of each photo. Notes I don’t really understand. Very little history for my children to care about and feel close to.
Video provides a new opportunity and the GoPro camera allowed me to carry my camera with me everywhere. The audio isn't first-rate but it is audible.
The Yellowstone River is one of the major rivers in the United States flowing through the states of Wyoming, Montana and a small part of North Dakota. It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and is the longest undammed river in the contiguous United States.
As you could see in this video, my wife Heidi who loves cold water, jumped in the Yellowstone took a swim. During the summer months, particularly in July and August, the water temperature in some sections of the river can be quite comfortable for swimming and water-based activities. In the warmer months, water temperatures along the Yellowstone River may range from 60°F to 70°F.
Rafting on the Yellowstone River is a popular outdoor adventure. The river offers a range of experiences, from calm stretches suitable for beginners like what we did to challenging white-water rapids for experienced rafters.
The river passes through breathtaking landscapes including lush forests, open valleys, and the iconic Yellowstone National Park. We had the opportunity to witness diverse wildlife and geological wonders.
Some parts of rafting were tranquil and family-friendly, allowing for a relaxing float down the river, while others feature thrilling rapids that got our adrenaline pumping.
Experienced guides like ours often lead rafting tours, ensuring your safety and providing informative commentary about the river's history and ecology.
Rafting on the Yellowstone River provides a unique perspective of the region's natural beauty and is a fantastic way to connect with the outdoors. Be prepared for stunning scenery, the sound of rushing water, and the chance to get wet as you navigate the river's twists and turns.
If you enjoyed this, please support my efforts to present more videos of all kinds by clicking the Thanks button below the video screen.
    Thank you

David, this was wonderful…I want to thank you for sharing this happy family adventure with us. My own family often went on camping holidays when we were children, and it is moments like this that stay bright in our memories long after less joyful events have faded. You and Heidi have given your children a great gift by sharing your love of Nature and discovery with them. They will not be afraid to try things they haven’t done before, and will remember these times with you…and they will give their own children the joy of a family that plays together. You are a great Father, and I hope you know that.🖤🇨🇦

Rivers are a wonderful way to travel! Our Russian River so much calmer. Filled with tubers during the summer!
After our Feb 5th 6 inches of rain, our River has too many trees and debris to travel. Our water rescue teams practice in this shit!
    Family fun! Thanks David!

Great stuff, and on a non related note, Heids of Liverpool Ny used to have a secret recipe for hotdogs, and eventually it ended up in the hands of Hoffman hotdogs, who still makes them for Heids today!

    Time Mark 2:53
    A Hoffmann Family short.
Fully relaxed, lounging, leaning back, David casually films as the seemingly small but yet sturdy craft is violently thrown and tossed about from one white cap to the next! Perhaps the very next crest lurking just there in the visible distance, will be their very last, before being swallowed up whole and dragged down into the cold, dark depths of the tumbling, swirling abyss? Fears of capsizing, knock downs, and even the dreaded pitchpole, run rampant through the minds of all aboard the seemingly doomed vessel! That is, with the exception of David, or should I say, Captain Ahab, as he leisurely continues filming. As the tiny ship fights the swift currents and standing head waves, and the children’s faces portray the sheer terror which engulfs their every thought, a miraculous moment occurs. As quickly as the blink of an eye, or the flap of a hummingbirds wings, the children’s glances fell upon Captain Ahab. This completely reassures them without even a single word being spoken, but just by Captain Ahabs calm, relaxed demeanor, and his natural command of the ship & sea, they instantly realize that all is good in the world. And all is good upon the tiny vessel and going just as Captain Ahab had planned. Subsequently the children’s faces which were once portraits of terror, relax, the fear draining from their faces, their squints turn into bright curious eyes, postures relax, smiles and laughter then erupt from all aboard the tiny ship!
They now have all the inner confidence they need to battle these rapids to the end and to exclaim , “We did it”!!
“But why did we do it Captain Ahab”? “Why”?
    Captain Ahab softly responds:
    “Because they were there children”.
    “Because they were there”. 🤔
PS* Couldn’t help but to write a little short. All in good fun buddy… 😉
PPS*, This particular day will be etched into the children’s minds for decades to come. THIS, is how wonderful childhood memories are made.
**Thank you for sharing such a personal
time & event with us David.
I for one really enjoyed watching it.

very interesting that this will be the first generation that had pretty much constant access / the ability to document their lives in HD... even me, being born in early 90s - VHS camcorders were available, but not everyone could afford them, and depending on the family, things were only recorded on 'special occasions'. The lack of footage from everyday lives of the past adds mystery and fuzziness to the memories..... but now, there will be no mystery, no "fuzziness" - everything will be there, in HD, 1440 K+, and I believe this will start to change our perception of time / time that's gone by..

i feel you did the very right thing here, david. "legacy" is an interesting aspect of youtube and the digital world. besides the point that the platform is in decline and may / will shut down in the coming decade due to their more and more horrible corpo attitude policies including arbitrary deletion of "undesirable" content (FOR INSTANCE MY FAVORITES LIST OF SIXTEEN YEARS. 1500 VIDEOS AND MEMORIES GONE BECAUSE GOOGLE SAW SOME OF THEM, WHICH I NEVER CREATED IN THE FIRST PLACE, AS "INAPPROPRIATE". THANKS GUYS. REALLY.), imagine your videos would be up here in 150 years from now.
what would people think? would they even desire to see old-fashioned hoomanz do boring quality time in the boring outdoors? would they perhaps be envious of the clean nature and air and the real emotions and human connection? would it be "oh, man, thats our great great great great granddad!" or "why did that guy even bother?"
youtube fulfills the same need that any old timey polaroid camera and photo album does. "I WAS HERE. I DID THINGS."
and you devoted your life to documenting.
