  • I believe that the creative life is a wonderful life. Whatever “job” you are doing to make a living, expressing your creativity is just so pleasing and satisfying and I believe helps extend a healthy lifestyle. I am regularly asked by subscribers and in classes where I teach about the creative process and how to find it in oneself and how to use it to create something. My dad and my early mentors taught it to me. So I have lived the creative life my entire adult life. And it has been and continues to be wonderful. I do hope that these tips are of help to you all.
Some of the viewers of this video who are my subscribers and others, already know that they are creative. I think this video might help you to more powerfully feel and use the creativity inside yourself. And I mean use it in just about any way. Obvious places would include cooking, collecting, photography, videography, sculpture, art, fashion and design, sewing, just to mention a few.
It is not uncommon for me to visit someone in their home who does not see themselves as creative in fact, when asked, someone who says that they are clearly not. But when I look around and I see the personal way people handle their living spaces, how they present their space to others and to themselves, I see creativity everywhere and it excites me and I want to talk with the person to find out what they are thinking that they may not have yet acted on.
I take my pad with an ink pen and sit in a warm well lit place and just let my mind and my heart and my gut altogether speak to me without any block or judgment in the way. I ask myself what do you think? An outcomes wonderful ideas every time I do it.
Cultivating creativity in your life can enhance not only your artistic pursuits but also how you approach everyday situations and challenges.
    Adopt a Creative Mindset
Embrace Curiosity: Ask questions and explore new ideas without judgment. Curiosity leads to discovery and innovation.
Be Open to New Experiences: Try new activities, visit new places, and meet new people. Exposure to diverse experiences can spark creativity.
    Develop Creative Habits
Daily Journaling: Write down your thoughts, ideas, and observations daily. This practice helps you capture fleeting ideas and reflect on your experiences.
Mind Mapping: Use mind maps to visualize your thoughts and ideas. This technique can help you see connections and generate new ideas.
    Create a Stimulating Environment
Design Your Space: Surround yourself with objects, colors, and artworks that inspire you. A visually stimulating environment can boost creativity.
Declutter: A clean and organized space can help clear your mind and make room for creative thinking.
    Reflection
Reflect on Experiences: Take time to reflect on your daily experiences and what you’ve learned. This can provide insights and inspire new ideas.
    Engage in Creative Activities
Learn a New Skill: Take up a new hobby or learn a new skill, such as playing an instrument, painting, or cooking. Engaging in creative activities can stimulate your brain.
Play and Experiment: Approach tasks with a playful attitude and experiment with different methods and solutions. Allow yourself to make mistakes and learn from them.
    Collaborate and Connect
Connect with like-minded individuals by joining clubs, online communities, or attending workshops. Sharing ideas and collaborating with others can spark creativity.
Share your ideas and projects with others and seek constructive feedback. Different perspectives can help refine and expand your ideas.
    Incorporate Creativity into Daily Life
Creative Problem-Solving: Approach everyday challenges with a creative mindset. Look for unconventional solutions and think outside the box.
Routine Variation: Break your routine occasionally by trying new routes, changing your daily schedule, or mixing up your activities.
    Balance and Well-being
Physical Exercise: Regular exercise can improve your mood and cognitive function, which are essential for creative thinking.
Rest and Relaxation: Ensure you get enough rest and relaxation. A well-rested mind is more capable of creative thinking.
By incorporating these practices into your life, you can foster a more creative mindset and approach to living, enriching both your personal and professional experiences.
If you are reading what I have written, I wish you the very best in your own search. I know you will be rewarded if you make the effort and express your creativity.

Ouch, wowza. I suppose my perfectionist side didn't think anyone knew about the fearful side actively avoiding the unknown. It's lovely to know the afflictions although individual are somewhat shared. You were indeed wonderful, thank you deeply Mr.Hoffman.

Thank you David! I'm so used to staying out of the way while cheering on the creativity and brilliance of the family that I kind of misplaced my love of writing. I could feel the pressure of my eyes gearing up to drop a bit. This was special for me 🧡🙂

That's all great advice, David. I've been learning these lessons one by one for decades. 😅I think the biggest struggle has been perfectionism, for me, but I"'m getting a little better about not letting it stop me each time I do something new. The dryer fouf, eh? 😄 That sounds interesting. At least he found a use for it. Thanks, David. 😊💙

After a 40 year Theatre career, these characteristics of creativity have been present in my colleagues over time. Some more of one trait, less of another. The best, though, whether other directors, actors or designers or artisans, have exhibited all these strengths, whether they are conscious of them or not. In an industry often dotted with temperament and insecurity, I’ve observed that when these elements are in balance it is possible to be comfortable withe idea of being creative as a life choice. Takes time to get there.

Thanks for the video Hoff :)
My main takeaway was the whole sitting with uncertainty thing. Creatively, I don't tend to struggle with this. I filled up a notebook with just the word "egg" despite many concerns (see channel for proof). When it comes to work, relationships, family e.t.c I do and it's important for me to keep these things in mind so I appreciate the reminder :)

Thank you so much for this video and your words about creativity! By far, this is my favorite as I started creating when I was 3 with art. My life up till age 12 was full of uncertainty but thankfully I could express myself through painting which also led to writing. Perfection? I tried that in everything but there is no perfect-- it's how you perceive things. I wrote an article that wasn't published ( many were,) entitled "Do You Have An Artist's Soul?" Sincerely I believe in it as I may see things differently but still come to the same conclusion of others in a roundabout way. Your words were just right!!! And I have questioned all of my life-- I want to know why and how. When you don't question, how will you learn? Kudos David!!! ❤

Interesting and thought provoking, thank you. I am sure David has a great big long list of content suggestions from his subscribers and is not short of his own ideas. However, I would like to add a suggestion to that list, and that would be a video about how the Joan Baez filming came about with the Scruggs family.
When watching that video, David must pinch himself now and again about how fortunate he was to get that opportunity and how amazing it was to capture that very special interview/session. I would love to know if David kept in touch with those musicians and what his relationship with them was like, did it progress, did he stay in touch with them etc etc.

I’m a fabricator and non-perfectionist who appreciates what perfectionists have produced for the world but I find them nearly impossible to work with because I believe that form follows function. The P38 is a beautiful plane not because the designers set out from the start to make her so dam sexy but because of the critical inherent symmetry involved. Otoh, Frank Lloyd Wright left us some very appealing architectural marvels that were sometimes engineering Rube Goldbergs.
