This must be the best video on how to set up a Japanese plane available on UA-cam. As a Westerner it is not always the easiest thing to teach yourself the skills with no access to craftsmen that understand and use Japanese tools. We'll done sir, and thank you for the clear and easy to follow instructions!
Must be the most methodical, well demonstrated, and produced video on UA-cam. I always hand plane my work as it polishes the surface, unlike sanding. I am looking now to buy a top quality Kana. Thank you.
I think the Japanese of old would be very proud of all the work that you do. You are so precise. I have seen guys not be so precise even with metal but you sir are doing thousandths with wood and that is the way I like to do everything I build, thousandths. I don't even want to see light in between my cuts. Job well done mate.
I just purchased my very first "kanna" ever...watching this look sa bit daunting but I believe I can get it sorted hopefully without wrecking the plane too much...many thanks for the detailed visuals and explanations!
Thank you for posting this video. I am always amazed at the amount of skill and knowledge it takes just to be able to set the tools up for use. It is no wonder why these tools work as well as they do. Please keep up the good work!
Thank you so much, by means of you, your video and the subtitles, i have been able to set up very well my 2 Kanna's (50 & 70 mm large). It's a great pleasure to set up them and see / feel how well they operate. Nice tools, again thanking you ...
I ve seen ur vdo 3 times n I wish to see it again n again. Just to observe ur work in minute detail. Its pleasure to watch u work slowly n carefully.Accurate! !!! Great!!!Thnks for vdo n parting ur knowledge!!!!!

I have several blanks sitting on a shelf conditioning to my shop. This is excellent, and I will have to watch it a number of times, then experiment, then watch it again....
Unfortunately this is why I’ll never own a Japanese hand plane. It was wonderful to watch your skill at setting up a hand plane, I have never seen a better video. As an American to attempt what you have just done with, what is no doubt in my mind, one of the better made hand plane ( I think you can tell the quality by the blade ) and you still have to go through all that you did is why I won’t own one. I have neither the skill nor the patience to do that, LOL. That’s why I’ll buy Lie Nielsen hand planes.
Super super sharp blade/ iron. Question if I may 🤔, viewing the blade/ iron sharpening wet stone, why are we not able to buy stones of this size 🤔? the length is probably the same but, we do not seem to get the width in the stone that we need for our wider blades. Thanks Les.
Awesome video thank you for sharing and teaching ! Please share the names of the powders , waxes, the tub setup. This also would help a newbie like myself. I’m a newbie at 74 years old and having so much fun.
It is very soothing & tranquil to watch a Kanna being prepared & blade sharpened. Amazing how fine the shavings are, you could even see a ghost image of the woodgrain in your last shaving! The sound of planing is so different compared to western planes, I don't think ours could plane so fine. How much would a decent Kanna like yours cost to buy?
Absolutely fascinating to watch. Relaxing too Would be great if there were some subtitles added that I can read. Thank you for this video and even more for this channel.

I always thought my patience is strong until I watched this. Extremely meticulous work.

This is by far the very best guide to the proper setup of a Japanese plane. Thank you so much. Just love this channel!
You have seen little
Even without English subtitles you explained it well visually! Thanks for another great video!
Someone translated it into English.

brought a kanna since 2015 and been treating it pretty rough, gonna take care of it with your shared knowledge, million of thanks!
The sound it makes when it shaves is just so intensely satisfying.
Excellent video, again!

Dont know why this video is one of the greatest I ever seen about wood working. Amazing.

This is some seriously mad skills - I've always been amazed to see how thin those wood strips are.
Unbelievable... High Talend... Mastery class... Thank you for your quality videos my friend. I will look forward to watch the next one...
Thank You very much for this video 🙏 It is very informative, covering more than any other that I’ve seen so far.

Thanks man. I'll look out to set up my plane as fine as you did. With the best regards from a japanese-woodworker living in switzerland :-)
Wow... watched each second... I am astonished! Thanks for sharing such gift.
the craftsmanship on the blade is just too amazing😍😍
Oh Wow and that's why the Japanese plane is perfection in planes. Many many thanks for sharing such artistry.
I still can not explain what Zen is, but I think I understand it now! Thank you for the unbelievably great work!

The tank pipe was also cut off by the Japánese steel anno, and since then it hasn't gotten any worse , just better. Professional work in good hands
Really fantastic work, man. It's beautiful how those planes work! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Amazing craftsmanship! I always enjoy your work.
Your videos are Great!! Thanks you. I wish i can find these blue bins in USA. I cannot. 😢😢
great attention to detail - and cleanliness!

Wow! Thank You for all the skills shown in your video! I hope to come close to what you have taught. Thanks!
Bom trabalho e obrigado.

Brilliant video. So well done. Requires no words.
phenomenal work. I restore western planes and I can't say I've been as meticulous as this.
Thank you for sharing. This was a very complete and informative video.
This is an amazing instructional video, thank you so much ⚡️✌🏼
I have learned so much in one video ! thanks so much, I'm gonna rework all my planes starting tomorrow !
I love your videos, I'm trying to get to that next level.
Thank you very much! This was incredibly helpful!
This has to work better than a western plane with flat bases. This makes sense. Like a machine planer!
Great video, Thank you! Greetings from Croatia!
must see video about setting up the plane. very usefull, thanks!!

This was amazing! You did perfectly.
SImply incredible...many many thanks for showing!
Could I buy an ordinary planer from DIY store/ hardware? Yes. But this one teaches us on how to be more precise and PATIENT. Arigato Gozaimasu!

Great video! Thanks! Who made this fantastic kanna?

It's perfect. Great Job
i find that very interesting, i would like to know how much those tools cost for example?
Absolutely beautiful
Absolutely fascinating to watch.

Where did you get that giant piece of plate glass?! I really want something like that.
call your local glass dealer. They can get one for you. I have one that's 30" x 14" x 3/8" thick. If I had to do it again, I'd splurge for 1/2" thick.
Excellent video!
Can’t wait to get my hands on one of these Japanese planes. Ordered from Amazon recently, hope to receive a genuine product.
ure a master, a very patient one.
Great precision, congratulations 😀.
phantastic work! I love these even shavings. What is WA powder you put o the stones?
Hi, what is the name of the tool you use at 12:30? I would like to buy one.
Awesome video, just bought my self a japanese kanna, but i lack some description in the video. What does the anvil do?
