thanks for the review. until now I'm still using this lens. it's a bit of a challenge, but when you get a hang on it. it's a pretty good lens for beginners. I'm still going to keep the lens as a backup. If you can make more videos about the Sony A6000 w/ kit lens that would be great. IG: focus.and.click.photography
This lens is definitely under appreciated! I've seen some amazing photos taken with this lens, and captured a few myself. It's definitely a good lens to start with if you're just getting started in photography vs blowing cash on a expensive lens and you haven't figured how to use your camera or what type of photography you want to dive into. Just remember, buying all the expensive gear doesn't make you a better photographer, learning to master the current tools you have will.
Hey thanks for your thoughtful comment! I agree this lens is more than good enough to get people started with photography and they can save the money towards a better lens once they figure out what they like to shoot
This video confirmed my A6000 purchase. I was a bit hesitant about the lens but now I can consider this a good one to start photography with. Thanks for such a detailed and informative video Alex. Good going.
Same goes to me. After seeing this video, it made me feels relief as the kit lens suits me enough to start in the photography world. I just bought this sony a6000 a week ago and feels that im a to late for using this a6000. But now for me this a6000 always worth it on my budget.
This is a really helpful video 4 years later as I try to force myself to learn the sweet spots of this lens (while also relearning just like, the basics of photography in general). I know it's old and likely the creator edits differently now but I just wanted to give the feedback as a viewer that there's some kind of fade in on the narration audio that seems to reset every time there's a cut, at least in the direct address footage? And it's really distracting from the otherwise well presented information! Not sure if that's a default setting to avoid pops and clicks when cutting audio but yeah it would benefit from not that happening!
i just bought a a6400 that comes with this 16mm-50mm kit lens. And your video really aspire me to go out during the weekend to get creative pictures with the given limitation of this lens. :) Thanks Alex! FYI. This is my first camera :)
@@azvisuals did you ever happen to get your hands on one!? If not... I have one you could borrow to do a review on! I'd LOVE to get your opinion on it sir!
My brother..... thanks for this video as im looking to into getting this ain't a6000. I currently have a canon T7 and realize quickly that even though the Sony a6000 is a lot older, that its a lot better then the canon T7 and the Sony a6000 still holds its value til today.
Personally, I like it. I've got the A6000 kit for just about a month or so and for me the lens works out, so far. So, as a kit lense it's absolutly fine I guess. And, there is one thing I really love about it: it's small, the whole kit for that part. It's really nice to have a camera that I can keep with me all the time.
Your videos are getting better and better! Very detailed review. Love the hue strips in the background too. You should frame some prints to add to the background!
Got it as a kit with my a5100. It's so good for a starter, has some really smooth bokeh. Bought a few cheap manual focus lenses, and SEL1650 is definitely easier to use.
The functionality is what makes this lens. I now have the 17-70 Tamron and I laugh every time I see a UA-cam review calling the Tamron light and compact. The electronic zoom on the Sony allows for remote zooms and zooming with a gimbal button. The chief problem with the Sony is the aperture range which limits use to bright environments.
Oh man thank god I found your videos, starting again with photography (main career for me) but following you and your videos are keeping me very motivated, now I want to edit all my photos taken with the a6000, also have a Canon 6D and try to use both of them for my work and with the a6000 I can balanced speed shots and more focus points, and def more compact which is always convenient and video quality! 🙏 thanks for all of your advice and would love to see more videos
People who can't shoot or knows nothing about photography will tell you automatically "kit lens suck". This lens is by far the best lens to shoot and is extremely clearer than the canon 50mm. The kit lens are PERFECT editorial full frame adapted lens to use. but this 16-50 I shoot food photography and you wouldn't know if i shot with a Sigma or not. Also FYI, no lens hood will prevent flares and glares from a direct point to the sun, it happens on all lens no matter the brand unless you are getting one of those $20,000 lenses. Now hence don't get me twisted, I wouldn't pay for it, I would get a Sigma or so. But for a lens to shoot some basic photography, this is the perfect lens to use. Understand people just because it's a lens that came with the camera, that don't automatically mean "it sucks because" master what you have now and get good at it THEN upgrade. Get off auto and you'll see the lens is hella great
The problem I have with this lens is I don’t know how to keep a preset selected focal length on the lens for an extended time, as you’re able to do with manually operating zooms.
Yes you are right. That is one drawback to these digital zooming lenses. I should have mentioned that in the video. However the zoom ring makes it quick to snap back into the focal length you need so that's good at least
Great video. I was wondering if i should get the sony a 6100 without this kit lens and use the saved money towars a sigma 30mm f1.4. do you think it would be good idea?
Light, sharp enough, natural color, love the powerzoom for video. It's good enough for kit lens and for beginner like me. In my experience, i've been shooting some landscape in 16mm (directly towards the sunlight) and i get some vignetting on the corner for the result, i don't know why it's happen. But it's still good lens and i love it 😁.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your experiences! I can see how powerzoom would be great for video. Is it smooth as you zoom? Or do you see stutters
I have this kit. I must say it is how you shoot not with what you do it. I got opportunity to put on 18-200 lens while taking photos in event, after a while I put back my 16-50 and I was enjoying my small lens more better.
ALEX... I have read that this lens has a STICKING problem... and fails to open because it gets stuck. Any comments on that issue?? What other lens do you recommend???
I have two of them as they came with my A5100 and A6000 more or less for free. The A5100 was not available without the kit lens and the A6000 was more expensive as body only. This makes the lens unbeatable value.
A very informative video that is very well presented. I have owned a Sony a6000 with the 16-50 kit lens, and I have been extremely satisfied with its performance. However, as you point out, one must be cognizant of its limitations and apply the proper techniques to circumvent its shortfalls. I enjoyed the video very much. All the best in your upcoming productions!

Wow nice of you to comment and share your perspective! Yes most lenses are expensive and kit lenses are often overlooked and underrated. But they are great for beginners or non professionals. As long as it takes the shot, you have a memory captured forever and thats what matters!
I usually shoot in wide or zone af for landscapes or center for specific subjects. Your lens may be decentered and you can test it out by shooting upside down. If your image is unfocused on the same side flipped, the lens has an issue.
Such an informative video - you know your viewers well! 👏🏼 I’m a beginner and considering buying the A6000 as a step up from my iPhone 8+ for travel purposes. Or would it be more or less the same quality? Any recommendation on how to edit photos easily to make the colors pop as you’ve shown?
Is it okay for portrait shots? Or does it make more sense to avoid offers with the kit lens and just buy a more traditional E-mount long lens if I'm on an EXTREMELY tight budget?
I bought sibt 6400 and that lens was in the kit. I think that is pretty good as a kit lens. It's very light weight and allmost like pancake. Lets say, this is great for spontaneous photoshooting and if you have to document something long period of time, your hands do not get tired easily.
Probably get the A6100 which is the successor to A6000. I bought my A6000 when it first came out with the 16-50 and 55-210 lens combo. Extremely happy with the 16-50 for its size and weight. After that I bought SIgma 16mm and Sony 18-135mm for better F-stops and travelling .
Meike 35mm f/1.4 Another pancake lens, albeit dirt cheap, manual, and made-in-China. It gives you a 50mm-equivalent field-of-view on a Full Frame camera. Learn to manual focus (and zone focus) like the old masters. Plus the a6000’s focus peaking and zoom focusing makes light work of it. Wee Gee was quoted to have said, “f/8 and be there.” The APSC cropped equivalent is f/5. Good for street photography.
Thanks for the review on photography. How about video? I am planning to take zv-e10 with kitlens. Mainly use for video. But still thinking. Please advice
i’m considering buying this for a photography class (but also because i’ve been looking forward to buying an official photography camera) but i want something good. i’m new to photography. my budget is $400-$800. what would you suggest? thanks
Sorry for the late reply. But because your budget is small, I would stick with the cheapest set you can buy. Don't forget about lenses too! Because as you grow and get better at photography, you will want to upgrade.
Great review! This helps clear up some of my questions on this lens. I don't know much about photography, but I do want to invest in a nicer camera. The Sony A6400 comes with either a 16-50 lens, or a 18-135 lens. I'll only be recording DIY videos in my garage. I'm figuring the 16-50 should be fine for this, but is there any reason to consider upgrading to the 18-135? Thank you, in advance!
Hey thanks for watching. I think if you are starting out, the 16-50 should be fine. Especially if the space is tight, the 16 will give you more content vs the 18. And most importantly if your garage is dim, invest in some good lighting because thats really what makes the most difference. Check out my other videos about lighting to get an idea!
@@azvisuals I'll definitely be sure to check them out! I did start off by brightening up my garage a ton, since I was recording on my phone, I figured one way to enhance the quality of the image would be to get better lighting. But I do want to upgrade to a camera now, and I might just get the A6400 with that 16-50 lens. Thank you!
Love this lens!!! Very sharp, good bluild quality, good oss, good price, very small, always i carry with me🤘 versatility is his name for photography or videos + variable nd filter 👌
Thanks for your videos about the A6000. I am contemplating in buying this vs the A6100 as I have limited budget and want to buy good lenses. What lense can you recommend for Landscape? Or any good lenses for most scenarios? Thanks
Assalamualaikum brother, hope you are doing well. Actually I'm just going to start my photography. Actually I'm becoming a little bit serious about it. Should I buy the A6000? or I should buy A little cheaper camera. And does the 16-60 mm lens comes as a kit lens with the A6000?
Thanku for the very nice review. Your samples are quite sharp and contrasty. But mine is not.. I have this Sony a6400 with this kit lens. But I get lot of noise even in good light...and the images are not that sharp as expected. I don't know if it's lens problem or settings issue.I just bought this week. I'm a complete beginner.bplease share some thoughts on it. Thanks
Any other compact lens to replace this. I am planning to get 6100 but the full kit is not in stock so I need to get seperately. I need a compact lens for day to day landscape photography.
I sold this lens after comparing on the A6000 to my old rx100 Mark 1. In daylight the rx100 images were equivalent if not slightly better so for me there was no benefit to keep it.
The lens is ok for video. You can actually zoom pretty steadily due to the power zoom feature. But the AF ring is loose and hard to control if you want to pull focus. Of course, the a6000 is not great for video. A newer camera that supports 4K would be better.
Thanks for your feedback! The optics in this lens are not top notch by any means, but for the price and SIZE I think it can be overlooked. Sony had to make some compromises so yeah, it's not the best quality lens in the system
@@explodingheavens Too bad the Sigma 19mm was discontinued in favour of the new 1.4 trio, meaning it's more of a hassle to get it now. Realistically unless the person looking at your images taken with this lens is a pixel peeper most won't even know you took them with a kit lens.
That is a tough question. I have a few lens review videos on my channel if you want to see some examples. But the Sigma primes are well regarded for their image quality and price!
I know you have recommended Sonya5100 for live streaming instead of Sony 6000 now my question is why ( cuz i am about to invest in one but i would like to hear your input before doing so ) much appreciated °˖✧ ❤ ➺|♫
Lol am i the only onr who likes sun flares😅 i think they are dope if used well. Shame most lenses don't flare at all. Gives it some character to the image👌🏼
Sorry for the late reply. But I agree! Sun flares adds charm and character. I just put up a new lens review video that has a ton of flares and love the look.
OMG 16 50mm it is fantastic lens I love this lens, keep the main I know 18-55mm by Nikon most terrible and Canon 18-55mm macro just macro is Awesome by Canon!
Nice video but try to cut it as less as you can... I mean they are like 5sec videos joined together... It will distract the focus of viewers from the subject and makes less appealing...👍🏻
The KIT is the most compact of all for APS-C. Compared with a a5100, it's even (jacket) pocketable! I'm still surprised of the Images with this combo after more than 5 years.
As a starter lens, the Sony 16-50mm is an enigma that asks you, “what kind of photography are you into?” No one can answer that but yourself. It is a general purpose lens, where the sweet spots are generally limited to f/5.6, f/8 to f/11. (Not forgetting the Sunny 16 rule.) When you start to take notes of what the lens can’t do, it actually points you into what direction of photography and appropriate lens you should get. I imagine every beginner’s second lens would be a prime as a knee jerk reaction to the kit lens’ shortcomings (I know I did).
Kit-lens apologist here. You can learn about the Sony 16-50mm sweet spots and what it can do over here : braddlesphotoblurb.blogspot.com/2016/11/how-to-get-best-out-of-sony-16-50-oss.html Pro tip : shoot in DMF focusing mode, or set a custom key for AF/MF focusing. The lens has problems with micro-contrast so you’d need to focus manually to fine-tune for sharpness.
Anyone else shoot with the 16-50mm kit lens and really like it? Would love to know your thoughts!
Please make video about, how to use AF/EF/ focus peaking.

Nice! Glad we have similar thoughts about it
Thanks for your videos about the A6000. I am contemplating in buying this vs the A6100 as I have limited budget and want to buy good lenses. What lense can you recommend for Landscape? Or any good lenses for most scenarios? Thanks
Many people like the sigma primes. Good build and sharp optics. I think getting a wide angle and tele should be a nice kit for landscape.
Get yourself a nice telephoto lens for landscape👌🏼
Great! can you also do *a video for product photography( jewellery)* using a light box maybe?
is this camera good for macro and slow motion video?? this will be my first investment in the space. Thanks for any advice!!
Macro all depends on the lens but no, this camera is not good for slow motion
Assalamualaikum brother, hope you are doing well.
Actually I'm just going to start my photography. Actually I'm becoming a little bit serious about it. Should I buy the A6000? or I should buy A little cheaper camera.
And does the 16-60 mm lens comes as a kit lens with the A6000?
It is a great starting camera at the price point. But now with sales going on, you may be able to get a newer one at a similar price point.
Thanks a lot brother ❤️,Love from Bangladesh ❤️
nice the video I was looking for.. 16-50 is 24-70 equivalent on crop right?
Yeah, but it is roughly 24-75 on full frame
Very good review... thanks!
Appreciate that! Thanks
Thanks
Thanks! Maybe your settings are not right. Try to shoot in M mode with the lowest ISO to reduce noise in photos.
great review 👌
Any other compact lens to replace this. I am planning to get 6100 but the full kit is not in stock so I need to get seperately. I need a compact lens for day to day landscape photography.
Check out Instagram @ag1805x for the type of pics I shoot.
Nice! You can look into some sigma primes. The APSC lenses are pretty compact and affordable. Best of all, they have really good image quality.
good "perspective" on the 16-50mm lens this is such an (ePIC) review! LOL :P keep it up! 🙏

Awesome! Welcome to the channel ☺️
30mm @ 3.5??? You can use 3,5 apatrue only on 16-17mm. If you zoom it aperture is automatically closed to about f/5
Yes thanks for catching that! My mistake
bro does this lens makes shaky while taking video or slomo or does it have stabilization?
When i shoot RAW with this lens, i get a big black vignette in my picturen, and my lense is a bit wabbly
Your lens might be defective. If it's still under warranty I would contact sony
What should I do if the power switch gets stuck
Sorry I've never had that happen. Maybe try to clean it out carefully
Thanks, another thing would you suggest buying a camera from offer up or better safe than sorry and buy it from like bestbuy or something?
This lens on an a5100 is my gimbal setup. I use it all the time. The zoom range is perfect for gimbal work. I had to buy 1, got it for $70. Good show!
I sold this lens after comparing on the A6000 to my old rx100 Mark 1. In daylight the rx100 images were equivalent if not slightly better so for me there was no benefit to keep it.
The rx100 series aren't very ergonomic for me
The real question is how is this with video?
The lens is ok for video. You can actually zoom pretty steadily due to the power zoom feature. But the AF ring is loose and hard to control if you want to pull focus.
Of course, the a6000 is not great for video. A newer camera that supports 4K would be better.
@@azvisuals I got this lenses for the a6500 but thanks for replying
Please any one all rounder lens and cheap in price
A 35 1.4 lens is my go-to for everything. I actually just put a review video up about it!
You've just started and you have such quality content . I'm sure you will become a real successful UA-camr one-day ❤️
Peace out✌️
Hey thanks for your support! That means a lot and modivates me to do more!
Zoom in for detail and if you are satisfied with blurr, fringing and such, its good for you. I was mad, its not Chinese clone camera...
Thanks for your feedback! The optics in this lens are not top notch by any means, but for the price and SIZE I think it can be overlooked. Sony had to make some compromises so yeah, it's not the best quality lens in the system
@@azvisuals Sigma 19mm is way better choice if you want light(and cheap) lens, at least for stills, if its for videos, it matter less.
@@explodingheavens Too bad the Sigma 19mm was discontinued in favour of the new 1.4 trio, meaning it's more of a hassle to get it now. Realistically unless the person looking at your images taken with this lens is a pixel peeper most won't even know you took them with a kit lens.
@@georgekamenov_ great for beginners and personal usage, truly depend on usage.
@@explodingheavens thanks for your recommendations!
What is the perfect lens for the Sony a6000
That is a tough question. I have a few lens review videos on my channel if you want to see some examples. But the Sigma primes are well regarded for their image quality and price!
I might just use more the kit lens
The after question is ...if you have one lens Which lens is your(your favourite lens)?
I have that lens just cause it came along with the camera.
Nice! It is a good lens that comes with it.
Amazing video
I know you have recommended Sonya5100 for live streaming instead of Sony 6000 now my question is why ( cuz i am about to invest in one but i would like to hear your input before doing so ) much appreciated °˖✧ ❤ ➺|♫
Lol am i the only onr who likes sun flares😅 i think they are dope if used well. Shame most lenses don't flare at all. Gives it some character to the image👌🏼
Sorry for the late reply. But I agree! Sun flares adds charm and character. I just put up a new lens review video that has a ton of flares and love the look.
I prefer any Sigma Lens tbh :P I like 16mm 1.4 alot :)
Nice! I've heard only good things about that one. The 1.4 really helps in low light
OMG 16 50mm it is fantastic lens I love this lens, keep the main I know 18-55mm by Nikon most terrible and Canon 18-55mm macro just macro is Awesome by Canon!
Yep it's pretty impressive for the size and price!
I like your videos Alex, i'm tagging along the journey :)
Yes!! They really figured out how to pack decent performance into such a tiny package. Would be cool if they can do the same for newer gear
disappoiting for portrait o feel
Yeah, for portraits def get a prime lens like a 50 or 85!
Great Bro
Appreciate it man!
there is no possible way u made this whole thing about photos and brick walls.... use the camera record with the camera etc.
Kit-lens apologist here. You can learn about the Sony 16-50mm sweet spots and what it can do over here :
braddlesphotoblurb.blogspot.com/2016/11/how-to-get-best-out-of-sony-16-50-oss.html
Pro tip : shoot in DMF focusing mode, or set a custom key for AF/MF focusing. The lens has problems with micro-contrast so you’d need to focus manually to fine-tune for sharpness.
There are worst kits out there with other brands.
Yes most kit lenses are not great. I think the compactness of this one is what makes it special!
Am planning to upgrade to much better lens.. i want 50-210mm lens
The problem is not the camera and lens - it's the pis-poor batteries!
Metric please!
honestly: before you buy this lense (even used), you might as well use your phone camera.
nice the video I was looking for.. 16-50 is 24-70 equivalent on crop right?
Yep, roughly!
