    Sony 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS is extremely popular lens since it comes with your Sony A6000 series cameras. Lots of us disregard it since its so cheap and we think kit lenses are worthless. However, in this video I took it to the streets of beautifully frozen Copenhagen, Denmark to test this lens in different occasions starting from Landscape, Architecture, Portraits and Closeups. Suit for yourself if its good or not.

    This combo is sooo underated. I work in video and photography and I see too many people talk down to these body and lens combination. The kit lens can be very discouraging. Get a Sigma prime lens, 30mm or 56mm f1.4. The beautiful bokeh and sharp images will take your photos to next level 💪

    • @gamesbymanuel
      @gamesbymanuel 3 роки тому +2

      @@TomsJurjaks That is part of why I'm discouraged. I'm new to this so the camera + kit lens was already a considerable investment for me and I am not ready to buy new lens yet (but I would love better low light performance).

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  3 роки тому +5

      @@gamesbymanuel and a very "fast" lens (meaning the one with a wide aperture like f1.4 or f1.8) will help you with low light. But yes, you are right, photography is not a cheap hobby and actually those 2 Sigma lenses I mentioned are considered "cheap" compared to other lenses. Nevertheless, don't let the lack of cash stop you. Do your best and squeeze out the maximum from the gear you have. This is what my channel is about - how to get the most of what you have and work with low budget. You can still make quite good photos as you have seen in this video even with a kit lens. I would have much better photos if I would be out in nature (since I mostly do landscape photography), so do master the craft of photography first and only then think about the upgrade of your lenses. No doubt there's better quality lenses, but I always go back to this lens because of it's size and versatility, not that I have many lenses anyway. I have a long zoom lens, a manual focus wide angle lens, and a a few older lenses from a film camera I can attach with an adapter that include a macro lens and a 50mm lens. But a majority of the pictures I take are when I go hiking or am otherwise out and about. Most of the time I want a wider angle lens for most shots I take, but my dedicated wide lens is heavier and not convenient since it's manual focus. I also want to zoom in on some things sometimes so using the wide angle lens only doesn't work. Carrying around the zoom lens definitely wouldn't work. I enjoy taking pictures for fun and try not to sink a ton of money into it, so the kit lens is my most often go to. As I've heard said before, the best camera is the one you have with you. Anything too heavy to carry around on a hike just isn't going to be used. I've taken some pretty nice shots with the kit lens over the years as I've traveled around US national parks and other scenic places.

      Hey Gaston. Sony 85mm lens is absolutely amazing! But it is also meant for totally different things like portraits etc. If you need something like that - go for it. Alternatively, you can also check Sigma 56mm f1.4 or 30mm f1.4 for a wider view.

      Hey Fatih, it sounds like you have a very controlled environment which makes lens' job easier. If you have pro lightning and a tripod then you don't need fancy lens. To be honest, the kit lens would even be good enough. The only exception is if you really need shallow depth of field, then a prime lens would be better but for product photography, I don't see a reason why would you need shallow depth of field. Why don't you try working with your kit lens?

    Sometimes I doubt whether the photo shown here are actually taken with a kit lens. I have a sonya6000 with kit lens 16-50mm F3.5-F5.6. Try using them to take a lot of photo with different setting, different time of the day, try using BW, using Landscape mode, standard, Seipa, neurtral, Potriat, etc etc, play around with all the button you have.... try creating different mood etc etc.. Wonder if you can share those setting in the video that you took with Kit lens? Wondering the photo posted are flesh from oven without editing?

      Hi Rchenable, yes all the photos are taken with this lens. Check my other video "POV Landscape Photography with Sony a6000 vs a6400". There are all the settings and raw files included. You can inspect each picture to see with which camera/lens its taken :) and yes it is possible to take good pictures with this lens.

      @@TomsJurjaks @Toms Jurjaks thanks for the reply n will surely check out your other video. Do we just usually set to standard or neutral?

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  2 роки тому

      I personally have never used those settings like BW, Landscape, Sepia etc because I think they are very limiting. I believe this video will be a big eye opener for you: ua-cam.com/video/2bNcA6wEfUA/v-deo.html
      When I switched to RAW it opened a new world for me and almost unlimited possibilities for creativity. When you shoot RAW you can make the picture to look what ever you want it to look like with Lightroom. I think this is why you are having a hard time getting pictures you want (or as you see in my video).

      No Andrew. When someone says "50mm" - they mean a fixed focal length lens (also known as prime lens). Popular from prime lens is 50mm f1.8. The 16-50 or 18-55 (depending on brand) is a zoom lens.

    Why not for video?

    • @TomsJurjaks
      @TomsJurjaks  3 роки тому +1

      Its not the best because of several reasons:
      1) It does not have constant aperture, which means you will need to adjust the light if you zoom in / out;
      2) It does not have a filter thread, it means you can't put on a ND filter and can't achieve cinematic look by applying 180 degree rule;
      3) As soon as you zoom in a bit, the f-stop will be f5.6 which is quite poor for wide angle as object will not stand out and everything will be in focus.
      On a plus side, it has OSS which is nice. Don't get me wrong, you CAN use it for videos, but I would always choose any other lens than this for videos. For photos it is great tho.
