The Dead Heart - Lyrics
We don't serve your country
Don't serve your king
Know your custom don't speak your tongue
White man came took everyone
We don't serve your country
Don't serve your king
White man listen to the songs we sing
White man came took everything
We carry in our hearts the true country
And that cannot be stolen
We follow in the steps of our ancestry
And that cannot be broken
We don't serve your country
Don't serve your king
Know your custom don't speak your tongue
White man came took everyone

I'm leaving this comment here so after a month , a year or 5... when someone likes it, I get reminded of this song ..❤
Reminder, great song.
1st Wave on Sirius played this today, Thanksgiving, and it is so perfect to play on this day.
Dude time to listen to it again 😂😂
🖤❤️💛
December 1st 2023 and I'm singing it for my ancestors, and my dad, RIP, who was stolen generation

Hell yeah! Song with a purpose

Humor is alive in 2024. Esp with this band.
It brings me to tears when I hear this song. The fact the band cares enough to make awareness of the plight of the indigenous people of Australia is beautiful!!!! . They obviously aren't singing these songs just for money or because it looks righteous. These issues obviously matter to them and they want all of us to care. I wish more bands were more caring for our brothers and sisters all around the world like this band does!!!!!
❤

Right
The Oils power is in songs that keep Australia busy. Im not Australian but Dutch but I love the Oils.
Midnight Oil's music changed forever when asked to write a song for the Bi Centenary of Australia They visited outback communities for inspiration and found their cause!! Best era and best songs they ever produced.
Still listening to Midnight Oil in 2024
I love Midnight Oil, i am from Mexico. greetings to all around the globe. I knew this group in 1989
Same here!
This was one of the greatest songs to come out of the 80's...never got played enough.
Too truthful....upset political puppetry
Listening to this since 80s
Because no one cared about the atrocities as much as 80s youth did. We were a special kind
"because no one cared more about atrocities than 80s youth did".
Lol what? 70s were much more activist, more anti war, more counterculture, more anti consumerist, folk songs era. They cared far more for things that mattered. Otherwise, can you five me some counter examples which prove your claim that 80s youth cared the most about atrocities? What did they do to beat 70s or 90s youth? Even if just talking about songs, it's no contest, every second song in 70s was hippy war protest songs, about spreading free love, etc.
80s were boomers and decade of excess, full of consumerist fashion, coke heads instead of weed hippies, start of electronic music and pop music was huge like Michael Jackson, even if he made many songs with a good message, he also had hundreds of millions of dollars, bought theme park never land, decade of excess like I said.. At least 70s hippies were nor hypocrites as much and put their money where their mouths was and protested on the streets for change. 80s did like one band aid or live aid concert, made one song like we are the world, and that's it. 70s every second song from every artist was protest song.
70s were a special kind in a good way, 80s were a special kind in a bad way, or at least when it came to counterculture. 70s was the era of minimalism and hippy protest and counterculture. 80s was the era of mainstream and excess. The war in Vietnam ended, Cold War was basically over, and everyone just forgot and wanted to enjoy to the fullest and not give a shit about anything other than themselves. Hedonistic decade of excess is best way to put it.
Had the 12" in england. Loved the Oils, Love The Oils, still got video - Black fella white fella
Took my Daughter and her friend camping in the Okanogan, beautiful BC Canada. The both jammed out and danced the shit out of that CD, they both were 12...

Brilliant after all these years. 🎉
This is just uplifting music and nobody was passionate about human rights and history than peter Garrett you sir are an inspiration to myself and many more
He is indeed, George. It's ME, not myself.
These guys...So underplayed in the US. Peter garett is a solid man. Much respect.
Underplayed in south africa aswell
Mein Gott, ist das ein Lied!!!! Kann nicht genug davon kriegen!! Soviel Leidenschaft, Energie darin! Tut gut zu hören, dass es sowas gibt!!!!
Ach mein freund tu n a pas eu de colonies.
Loved this band in the 80s. Love them in 2024. Love what they stand for. I love that Paul Garrett got to follow his dream. He cares.❤ Looking forward to the new documentary about the band when it comes out!
This honestly is better than almost anything. Pop is all everybody talk about when this is still around big ups for Midnight Oil.
I mean... it really isn't "all everybody talks about." There are thousands of genres and sub-genres.

Midnight oil, they did make awareness of the indigenous people of our Australia . I understand the conflicts, bud they are the are heart of our true country. We must respect that.
One of the greatest bands of all time !
“We follow in the steps of our ancestors” is one of the best music lines of all time it’s sounds amazing and the way Peter says it is amazing
Yeah, but what is his ancestry? Aboriginal or rather Anglo-Saxon?
He’s white and anglo descended, championing indigenous rights. They’re not mutually exclusive.
@@streamsofsunlight He should champion for colonizers to leave Australia and go back to Europe. It is time to give the land back!
Native people need to rise up and take back what is theirs!!
@@Pagangirl8yeah. Good luck with that.😂
@@Pagangirl8 That is what he did. But that is also what is never going to happen.
Still a Song that means a lot for the exploited peoples worldwide. Hope to see you guys back in Brazil soon. We surely need it.
This is a masterpiece. This song says the truth !
Such a beautiful song by one of Australia's most finest bands ever! Much respect and all the best from a great fan of Australia from Romania! I understand the meaning and the references of this song, from the British colonisation to the troubled economic history of the late 20th century (which Men at Work also highlight in the music video of 'Down Under' according to frontman Colin Hay). Much love and respect to Australia from Romania! Rock on! 🤘
P.S.: Midnight Oil, Goanna, AC/DC, Men at Work, INXS, The Church, Mondo Rock, Icehouse, John Farnham, and many others have been some of my all time most favourite musical acts for quite a long time! Much respect to Australia and Australians once again! 🇦🇺
How can you forget Little River Band 😅 they're soo underrated
Best concert I ever been in my life was Midnight Oil, when they came to Toronto Ontario.
From an American, This is my favorite Midnight Oil Song!

still listen to Midnight Oil in 2020 ❤✊
I sure do, they are brilliant.
🙋🏻♀️
Great music stands the test of time. Midnight Oil is one of those rare groups whose music still sounds as fresh and new as it was when it first came out. And lyrically, still as relevant today, maybe even more so than ever.
Yea. This song is about. Black. Fellas 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺. Australian
Took. Everyone
Midnight Oil is so underrated
100% Agreed! They never got the credit they deserved and they were ahead of their time.
Just in the USA.
Human nature grants us the clarity of hindsight, but often only after it's too late
I think so too 日本より。
NO THEY AREN'T! Seriously, find a new word bc that is flogged to death on yt and on bands and musicians it doesn't apply to!
My vote for the greatest Australian rock single. Always a highlight of Midnight Oil live shows.
Life is full of surprises, and this song was popular in Latin America. I remember watching this song on MTV; maybe I didn't understand the lyrics at that time (because I speak Spanish), but it certainly caught my attention. And today, I am using some Indigenous Australian perspectives in my postgrad.. thanks Midnight Oil!
Listening in MX.
This is my favorite MIDNIGHT OILS song everything about it gets to my soul!

I found this band cca 3 months ago... And i can't stop listening
We follow in the steps of our ancestry
And that cannot be broken.....awesome!!!
One of their greatest songs.
30 years on & probably more relevant today than when it was originally written.
Dead right
how can we sleep , our BEDS are Burning
Bloody oath!
i can't sleep while my shlong is burning
It is. 30 yrs? Has it been so long,
37 years later; and still sounding fresh as an Australian daisy!
Me as child : Cool song.
Me as adult : Crying understing the text.
I grew up in France’s south west too. Back then the lyrics was the last of our worries… music and emotions first… sometimes years later I stopped listening to some bands when I understood how retarded the lyrics were. :-)
Love yourself and move forward.
I m w you , the lyrics are the pure reality of what happened time before, we can always change it...
I understood it as a kid. I always loved this💕👍

My friend is part aboriginal and she has loved this song ever since I showed her. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG AND MIDNIGHT OIL
There's no such thing as a part so-called Aboriginal. You are whatever your father is.
And so called Aboriginal people are really ISRAELITES from the tribe of REUBEN.

We the people of this ancient land still listen and understand. Thank you for raising a generation of people who reject the Eurocentric past and look to future based on an understanding of the 60,000 plus year old history of this place.

I listened to this song when homeless and on the Victoria and NSWales border in 1996. Was working in a small town called Goodnight, then wander the road.
Mid night oil was always my rebellion soundtrack.
Such an awesome song. Very old, but yet, here we are listening and loving it.
I so wish I could see them live.
Greetings from South Africa!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you Midnight Oil. Peter Garrett you will make a difference by changing people's minds through the music of Midnight Oil.

Yes. Thanks so much. Midnight Oil for your music very nice.
Peter Garrett had his chance to change things when he was elected to the Australian government . He was even Minister of the environment, He did little and even modified his views,
I have followed Peter Garret and Midnight Oil since my A.N.U student days where they would often play as Peter was a Graduate. Then at Tanelorn Mind Body Spirit festiva,l then at Stompem Ground (2) Broome . They Grew with me into our Country .
I'm also from ANU.

This was the first Midnight Oil song I ever heard back in the late 80s. It woke up my ears. Naive, simple, pure, visceral and honest.
Same here. I was in pakistan in the late 80's and my friend, Jude Dias, came over to my house and said Andrew you have to hear this. This song blew me away.. My friend has since passed away but every time I listen to this I see him rocking with me. May he RIP.

If only Poor Afrikaners stuck in South Africa could be treated like ur 🇦🇺 Aboriginals in regards to legitimate Minority Rights.
Now Australia 🇦🇺 is concerned about 🇨🇳 but it was so easy for former AU PM Bob Hawke and the rest of the world to support the Communist takeover of South Africa back then. Always much easier if it’s not ur family thrown into oblivion. Thanks Emily Hobhouse RIP❤️. ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE 👨👩👧✝️

This is still my favorite song by them all these years later.
When no one wanted to talk or think about these sorts of things, Midnight Oil told everyone what happened and what needs to be done to correct these things! I look white. I am an American but most of my ancestry is American Indian (my dad was 100% and my mom was about 20%) so I know how it is both ways! No one can say that everything that Europeans did here were good but also they were not always bad. We need to speak about all these things because when we don't they are lost.
I don't think we have to constantly bring up this issue. However, what you just said is exactly what we need to talk more about. You hit the nail on the head. A balanced way of looking at this, wasn't all good, yet wasn't all bad. I live in Canada and all I hear is how white man has never done anything good, yet our quality of life is a million times better than it was 200 years ago so..... People are becoming so spoiled, it's pathetic. A lot of people will literally complain about everything in their " awful society" while sitting at home collecting a check that basically gives them everything they need to live without doing shit!! Im not against welfare at all. I'm against this attitude of entitlement that people are starting to have more and more. I didn't say that pointing the finger at native people, but that is how I see them when they can't find one good word to say about the white man , but at the same time they have their hands open demanding more money.
I'm scared my brother. Earth is our goddess. Let's get together and save her. Peace!
This is about Australian history not American
@@donoteatbluedirt8529 it's the same in the usa.
Nathan, Mark, Steve and Doug. This band has cashed in on the problems between the races nothing more nothing less, they spread divide between brothers. If it's a fight they want a fight they'll get, ship stirrers sometimes have to Lick the Spoon. What race am I? I'm from the human race on a little blue marble.
I saw these guys in concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre outside Denver, Colorado in 1990. Peter Garrett was frenetic. You forgot he was backed by an incredibly talented band. Your eyes were glued to the tall skinny bald dude who was everywhere all at once. No one shaved their head then, except Telly Savales and Yul Brynner. It's a concert I will never forget.
So moving and musical! Timeless perfection!
Pure class. I hope the world listens to the words. It's nearly too late.

@Nathan McCarthy Recency bias does seem to be present, when people care about only the invasions that took place within the last few hundred years. However, these are the ones that we have the best records about, and the ones where the suppressed cultures are still around, so something can be done to support those cultures (obviously, some cultural features can be worth replacing rather than preserving, such as child abuse, sexism, racism, violent murder of enemy combatants, etc.).
@Nathan McCarthy Obviously you are English and if you are you are lucky that a little bit of treachery and greed stopped your country being called SCOTLAND today.Having an English National Party would've been strange to imagine. The person was more or less posting about the music that his/her country made & proud of it.
@@RichardWilkin ĺ
@Nathan McCarthy Your replies seem focused more on your anger, rather than what others say. For example, I never implied that you were from any given heritage, nor did I accuse you of anything. Rather, I agree that it is inappropriate to hold anyone accountable for what their ancestors did or didn’t do. We should be accountable only for our own actions. However, just as a manager sometimes needs to deal with issues that were caused by a predecessor, so too many nations have residual tensions and it is best to try to resolve those tensions. (I am not implying that some Australians have more right to be here than other Australians.)
