I am using her future journaling on this very habit! I have been trying to break sleeping in for years. My body is awake but my mind always convinces me to go back to sleep. The mind is powerful and I started to relapse after one week. Sleeping in makes me feel so terrible that I got new resolve and started again today. Then I just watched this by chance ! Thanks Nicole for a way to break this habit (that apparently you have too! )

Yes! I love the way that Internal Family Systems works with this resistance. It views the resistance as individual parts that have agendas for us to not change and validates and works with them individually to incorporate them into the bigger system and our bigger direction. Listening, validating, and finding those golden intentions that resistant parts are trying to bring us by resisting change. Then slowly seeking to unfold them with love and attention while integrating them into relationship with the rest of our parts in a healthy supportive way.

Complacency is being normalized and applauded while most people demonize the existence of non-conformity out of fear of seeking the truth within us. Because of this, most people just tolerate the life they don’t really want to live just so other people will like them and just fit in. Because of that, they feel emotionally trapped and powerless. That’s when I started my personal development channel and finally think outside the box. I’m glad I did because it taught me so many lessons that I will never trade with anything.

I see a lot of comments about how hard it is to get out of bed, for me it’s the opposite. I’m really sick with an incurable autoimmune disease and I should be resting now but I’m starting to see the patterns I have in which I use productivity as a coping mechanism in order to bury my feelings and essentially run from myself. I throw myself into work and it’s starting to take a toll on me, I feel stuck because it doesn’t matter how successful I am if my body, mind, and soul are not able to heal because I’m addicted to my own stress & high pressure stakes.

(There are cures in aurveda but you may not have access)
You need to do more of self love ( metta meditation...), which can slowly reverse the inverse conditioning. Basically the principle is to LOVE your whole self ( body, mind, soul)..
Rest, sleep, nutrition, exercise , fresh air, mental spacing out, de-cluttred lifestyle, caring companionship, altruism ( generosity, Patience, compassion, eqanimity, joy Etc).
Listen to the messages given by your body and consciousness.
Sounds basic but it's the prolonged deprivation of these that has gradually ruined the body's 7 systems...
So begin with some medications and major lifestyle changes .main thing is not to lose hope.❤❤❤

Basically, what you are saying is quite trivial to me: we all have default and routine ways of thinking and acting that we have established over the years of living. Sometimes we need to make a conscious effort to overcome our routine ways, which requires doing things differently from the way we would do them by default. So we have to overcome a resistance, in order to not get stuck in the loop, that limits our range of behavior and thought.
What psychologists love to ignore: that there is most likely no such thing as free will. Our consciousness is not subject to conscious decision, but to the neurobiological conditions that we find ourselves with. The neurobiological conditions is predetermined mostly genetically (not subject to the individual's own decisions and actions) and environmentally (our environment during upbringing, no influence on that one; beneficial and adverse environmental influences). So the individual has no saying in those main factors, that determine his / her cognitive-neurological development. Once you are grown and supposed to take responsibility for your own actions, you only have the brain available, that was shaped by those factors you could not influence. One person is lucky and equipped with a brain that allows him to fullfil all the demands that society puts on him, while another person ends up homeless on the street, because he's not able to maintain the focus, motivation and persistency required to make a living in a free market, post-communal, individualistic, neoliberal society. The first one we as a society adore as a smart, educated and successful person, while we look down on the latter and blame him for not meeting the norms and expectations.
Our thoughts and actions are manifestations of our underlying neurobiological condition: you can not perform an action that is outside of the physical-biological capacity of your brain to process information and solve a given task. For example: you cannot solve a complex maths formula, if you have not acquired the necessary neuronal cell networks that contains all the learned building blocks of knowledge (through learning / practice) that are required for that task. Same with more abstract cognitions and behaviours. Our ability to perform them is linked to learned and neurobiologically established patterns. We cannot perform an required behavior or task out of the blue.

Why then should we ignore that physiological need? It’s like if the body says im hungry and you force it to stay hungry. Doesn’t make sense really.

I'm stuck but at a mental level that affects everything. My brain has normalized very damaging habits on the way I think and address myself. While I try to 'fight' it, I bring it up first to 'fight' it, so I reinforce it just once again, and all my brain takes from this endeavor is the reinforcement of the negative thinking paths and habits then I am "stuck" because I've been doing this for so long! It becomes so normal and no amount of rational thinking helps because it's the default now. I'm trying though. It shouldn't be anyone's normal.

I feel like I’m going crazy because I want to change but literally my body will not cooperate. I’m trying affirmations and it temporarily makes me feel good. But I don’t think it’s working. How do we take steps to believe in ourselves ?

I can get out of bed no problem
Plenty motivated but I do things that just don’t serve me well due to just being anxious. So I believe I just Goto auto pilot for familiarity.
    It’s just brutal

Not sure you read comments on some of your older videos - but I wondered about resistance with decision making. I really struggle with decision making and understanding my own intuition. I just never seem to find clarity. But a particular decision has caused so much resistance internally and I know the more I don’t decide the worse it gets but I can’t understand how to get past it.

Thank you for this! What would you say to someone who is injured and has arthritis and when they wake up on 5/6 hours of it so great sleep, they feel the pain in their body? In that case, it would be best to listen more so to the body and not push it right? This often happens and it’s been a debilitating but strengthening exercise in my patience.

Hi Dr Nicole, thank you very much for sharing this. Would this apply to fatigue? I'm 31 and have been really struggling with severe fatigue since March. I'm a new mum and just want to be able to enjoy my baby but unable to do the most basic of things. Many thanks 😊

Being a new mom is exhausting!!!!!! You DO have to take care of yourself and recognize that you might be recovering from pregnancy, not sleeping enough, and perhaps even feeling an underlying anxiety about "doing it right" (which can all drain you). Drink tons of water- I mean tons. I do think at some point with mothers (or at least with me) I did have to take control of the situation. Not so much because I wasnt justified for being exhausted but because I was resigned to it. It was becoming a habit. I see it so much with the moms I work with. BUT You are just a few months out tho, now is not the time. Rooting for you momma!!!!

Hi Nicole. Thanks for this. I have a question about getting used to feeling different as a result of making conscious choices to change. It feels odd sometimes, knowing that one is in the middle of a process that requires an ongoing commitment. Do you have any advice about coming to terms with those feelings? Thanks in advance!

Yes, it can really feel strange (due to the homeostatic impulse) as we are adjusting to the new changes. It brings up a lot of physical and mental changes. I find journaling and meditation to be most helpful. I think the more understanding we have that this is "normal" and part of the process, the more we can accept it. The more we accept it, the better.

This is interesting! But, how do you stop reasoning with your subconscious? Is the reasoning part of the comfort mentality?
