The BEST Method for Growing Broccoli Sprouts

  • **NOTE: getting a LOT of comments about "DUDE, why not heat them at 70C like Rhonda?!" Dr. Patrick did in fact recommend this at one point, but she no longer does it (I don't do it either). The fact is that you need LAB GRADE instrumentation to do this correctly, and you could be losing a LOT of sulforaphane if you just go a couple C over! Not to mention this only works with FRESH sprouts, and I recommend freezing them as we are not going continually. Freezing them increases active SFN on it's own, and combining them with Radish or Rocket sprouts (see below) yields another 100% SFN. Doing both these things (which is what I currently do) yield anywhere from 2-6x SFN! And best of all doesn't take ANY extra time!
    DESCRIPTION:
    Rhonda Patrick brought a great amount of awareness to this amazing compound, but I think most of the growing methods on youtube (including Rhonda's method) take far too long for what you get in return. With the steps I use you will end up with enough sprouts for several weeks in one easy 3-5 day grow. This isn't groundbreaking stuff, but it took me several iterations to figure out.
    This is my first video!
    UPDATE: I now add Radish seeds when sprouting. This has recently been shown to increase SFN by 2x and ALSO decrease SFN Nitrile!!

Slow enough speech tempo to comprehend everything without pausing and rewinding, music wasn't too loud, video switching between you explaining and showing different phases adds more and not just to be flashy. I found a way to eat it, without getting too much stomach problems. It also solves the taste problem. I just make lentil soup for the week. Just 1 kilo of lentils, 2 cans of tomato paste, your favorite herbs and maybe some fresh ginger if you like it, 2 or 3 liters of water. Put that on for 30 to 45 minutes (depends what color of lentils you go with, I like the orange ones the most), use the hand blender to turn it into a soup and then I have 4 liter containers to put it all in. That is my lunch for the week, but that stuff gets super firm overnight, so I need quite some liquid to make it into a soup for the next days. So I simply use the method in this video and after given the process enough time, add it to my lentil portion of the day and voila. Great lentil - broccoli sprout combination. I add some other stuff to it that I like (marmite or white miso), some kurkuma with black pepper (part of the daily dozen of Michael Greger) and I’m good to go. Lentils make my stomach calm and they happen to be super healthy. Maybe this can help others as well.

    Thank you for the video! One issue: I let my seeds initially soak for 24 hours - just as you suggested and... omg- the next day they stunk-ity-stunk stunk stunk! Like... sulfer-y, gross, don't-invite-my-boyfriend-over-because-he'll-turn-around-and-leave-and-I'll-never-see-him-again- stunk. Since this is my first time sprouting, I had no idea if this was normal, but my visceral gag response told me to toss them and start over. I did more research and found growers who suggest soaking broccoli seeds for just 2-3 hours, or they will get over-soaked - which causes them to get smelly and ruins them. I live in a warm climate, but our AC keeps the house at 78. I'm going to try again. This time, with just a three hour soak. A three hour soak. (No relationships were harmed in the soaking of my broccoli seeds...) ps: I love the quick cameo appearance by your adorable kitty at the end of your video!

    This is by far the best vides I've seen, and I've watched a ton of them. So clear and straightforward. I love it. But, I do have two questions: 1. Does it make sense to blend the sprouts as soon as they're ready and then freeze them right away, or will that prevent the reaction? 2. You say you consume about 100 mg every 2 days. What does this translate into in terms of volume? How much should I consume daily, a packed 8oz cup's worth? More? Less? Thanks.

    • @djthedadiofficial
      @djthedadiofficial  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks! I've only made a couple UA-cam videos but this is a topic I've been involved with a lot.
      I think it makes more sense freezing first. So what will happen via the freezing process is the cell walls will burst, opening the walls between the various critical chemicals. When the mixture starts to thaw, the glucoraphenins will join and start to form SFN. Blending will accelerate this. If you blended first, you would immediately create SFN and I'm not sure how much would survive freezing and thawing, as it is an unstable compound. But that's just speculation, I've seen no studies that compare those scenarios.
      That was a rough estimate, I don't measure with a scale of anything. I actually have changed my intake to every 3-4 days as I think it makes more sense for hormesis to benefit from ingesting SFN. I wouldn't get too hung up on the quantity, like everything in diet, consistency is King.

    This has been the only way I grow them now, and the only video I recommend to others. I just noticed the part, though, about adding radish. How much, pct wise? I always eyeball the sprouts to roughly a half inch, or so. Are you talking a tbsp, or two, or just a roughly even mix, half and half?

    • @djthedadiofficial
      @djthedadiofficial  5 років тому

      There aren't many studies on the topic. I think the only one that's been done used 50/50, so I just guess about half.

    I saw some info that the seeds, jar and lid should be washed with a 1:10 solution of bleach to reduce the potential of bacteria, etc. What say you?

    • @djthedadiofficial
      @djthedadiofficial  5 років тому +2

      Go through the comments, that's what I recommend everyone do 😉. Just be sure to wash out with water until there's no trace of bleach left and then don't open the jar afterwards to keep out contamination

    Excellent - best video yet, not a wasted word. Best tip on quantity (less seed gets too cold to sprout?) what about ambient temperature in kitchen? mine grow so much better in the summer (Santa Barbara but keep house cold). Many thanks!

    • @djthedadiofficial
      @djthedadiofficial  4 роки тому

      Yes cold certainly stunts the growth. You can actually put them in the fridge and they will stop growing. I put more seeds because each seed has a certain amount of nutrients, the nutrients do not increase as it grows.

    Are you familiar with purple broccoli sprouts? I'm interested in their health benefits.

    I refined the process down a bit further - once I see that the sprouts are ready to eat - i pour hot water on them and let them sit for 10 minutes - then I eat them all - with nothing added - they taste like radishes

      If you're trying to heat them to increase SFN, please read the studies on the subject. Too cold and the heat will do nothing, too hot and it will destroy everything good. It's a relatively small window you have to aim for, which is why both Rhonda Patrick and myself have given up on this method.

    at 4:12 you say that if you add something else to the blender with the sprouts it might slow down or stop the sulforaphane reaction. Where do you get that information?

    • @djthedadiofficial
      @djthedadiofficial  6 років тому +10

      a Q&A with Dr. Patrick whereby she was asked that question. I believe she got that information from Dr. Fahey, I haven't been able to find a study on the topic
      It doesn't take me much extra time to pre-blend it, so I'm sticking with that step

    Thanks for your informed and easy to follow tutorial, I'll be purchasing some broccoli sprouts today and giving it a try!! I read in a recent study, heating up the broccoli sprouts in 65°C water after it comes out of the freezer, further increases the sulforaphane. Have you read anything similar? Again, thanks for your video!!

    • @djthedadiofficial
      @djthedadiofficial  4 роки тому +1

      The heat works the same as the freezing, it disrupts the cell walls. So heating AFTER freezing won't do almost anything. Heating is very tricky and you need lab grade equipment (if you get 5c too high, it destroys all SFN). I stick to freezing for those reasons.
