Can you imagine any band releasing the biggest album ever, the whole world going nuts for it and a month later you start something else. These days an artist/band would ride the success of Pepper for years before doing another thing.

The speed at which they worked is insane. I wasn’t born for a long while after they had broken up so the first time I saw the release dates of each album I genuinely could not believe it

I think more people now are hoping that Peter Jackson can get hold of that un-used footage, perhaps combine it with the official film and make somethin cohesive out of it. I hope so too! 😻

It's a testament to the Beatles that a movie could be made like Magical Mystery Tour having no script or plot or director. It is still better than 95% of today's so-called blockbusters.

From what I can remember Paul said he wanted to recreate the charabang mystery day trips coach companies used to do, and some still do.
These were popular back in the 30s,40s and 50s with working class people. Basically a coach trip to a seaside town or stately home with people bringing crates of beer to drink as well as stopping off at a pub on route.
Paul wanted to make a film based on this with little direction so as to make it seem closer to an actual coach trip.

This is quite a well done & amusing video about the chaotic filming of MMT.
The one error I spotted was about the music format. MMT was released in the UK as a 6 track double EP, not an album. It was released as an album in the USA with Hello Goodbye & the earlier singles added because America didn't use the EP format.
Then, after the EP format died in Britain in the 1970s the British double EP was deleted from the Beatles catalog and the MMT album was standardized worldwide, the only US album that this happened to.A minor point of correction.

Too bad this movie got such bad reaction, it was largely misunderstood. I love this crazy movie, it's an "art" film, surreal. Not intended to be a story with a narrative, rather vignettes of random ideas set to incredibly inventive new music. The music of Magical Mystery tour is pound per pound better than Sgt. Pepper. in my opinion.

I LOVE the movie. Yes I said it! People were expecting another Hard Days Night and boy was that wrong! This was physedelia days! If nothing else, I give credit for Paul for having a lot of ideas for the Beatles. The film had some cool moments like I Am The Walrus, Your Mother Should Know ( with the Beatles doing Fred Astaire! ) and John feeding the fat lady spaghetti! Broadcasting this in black and white was criminal. I certainly hope the unused footage gets released some day. Oh, and by the way, didn't those fish and ships look good!

The problem with this film and Give My Regards to Bradstreet is that Paul think his name is Orson Wells. In a bit of Get Back you can hear tell the director he can make this long continuous shot as Orson Wells opened one of his films.

Paul is always seen wearing his wristwatch on his right hand as well as a ring. So when he said he was wearing the walrus costume on the cover of the album, he was lying. As you can clearly see his watch and ring on his right hand on the cover of Magical Mystery Tour. And he is all the way to the left in the Hippo costume. John was always the walrus.

It was not a bad idea, and the songs recorded for it were great. The Beatles were still at the apex of their creativity at this point in the recording studio, in my opinion. But they bit off more than they could chew with a film, and they needed an experienced filmmaker to helm the project.

  • @ustheserfs

george and john worked against paul in every respect when it came to hatching new ideas. paul's fear was very much the ones brian suffered, how do we continue to generate revenue when we're no longer a performing band. paul should be revered for his relentless work ethic and desire to keep this band forging ahead.

It’s in 4:3 ratio and not HD/UHD but decent quality.
I suspect they will update it to HD with Dolby etc likely the work will be done by Peter Jackson as Paul and Ringo along with everyone else were v impressed with the Get Back project.

I’m sure this was meant as a joke but i’m going to address it anyway. The Beatles were human beings, not gods. And they were musicians not film directors. As a result the music is fantastic, but the film is dodgy. That’s just The Beatles, being human. In my opinion, the album contains some of their best work, so i wouldn’t call it a failure. And it had nothing to do with Yoko, who barely even appears in any of the behind the scenes footage. At this point she hadn’t even been with John for a full year, she was his new GF and had little influence.
Ultimately Yoko gave John ‘permission’ to stop being a pop star which is what John desperately wanted. I’m not judging if it was a correct decision, as it wasn’t my life. But she was probably the only person he knew, telling him he could do whatever he liked, even just unwind, stop working so hard, and enjoy his life more. Everyone else probably told him he’d be crazy to leave the Beatles. Understand, for most of a decade John had been on an insane schedule of recording, touring and press that was relentless. He was fed up with that, and being in the public eye, mobbed everywhere he went. John was done, you can see it in Get Back, he doesn’t even want to be there. Harrison, too.
Maybe, keep your hatred reserved for places where it is actually deserved? Or better yet, maybe avoid hatred altogether if you can. You’ll live a happier life. But that’s just a friendly suggestion from an old man, i’m not here to judge you any more than you’re here to judge John for loving Yoko. (Neither of which you personally know or have any reason to think you understand.)
