My brother Bill Slaney, was 2nd battalion, left flank and retired as an officer. He's still going strong and well. Love him and respect all that fought on Tumbledown
I, like many served in the Falklands, whilst i was there this tune was regarded as the un-official anthem of the Falkland islands. I have spent 28 years trying to hunt this down ! thank yoy !
Great tune. The British lost in the Falklands are often forgotten amid the grief for the fallen in 1914-18 and 1939-45, but they were as brave and as heroic. Colonel H and his men are true heroes. Bless all of you that stepped foot on those islands. RIP. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old, age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.
I serve in The 2nd Battalion Scots Guard in The Falklands. This tune means a lot to me and it reminds me of all the the ones. That did not return with us and are laded to rest in the Falklands I will not forget them. God now has them in house.
William Malcolmson have read that the Scots Guards wore their berets during the assault on Tumbledown so it would be easier to identify them in the dark; but I have seen paintings that depicts helmets being worn. Can you provide some information on this? Would love to hear it from someone that was actually there.
He is on Facebook Ian (Jock) Davidson. Top bloke, superb soldier. Myself I was left flank , 15 platoon, and assaulted this mountain, got wounded after we took our objective, in the ill fated stretcher party that took, David Malcolmson and Jim Reynolds. Sadly missed and never forgotten.
Proud to have served in G Company 2nd Battalion Scots Guards. As a young Guardsman the biggest majority of my NCOs & Senior Ranks were all Falklands Veterans, hard men to work with but by god you learned from the best. 💂♂️🔵🔴🔵💂♂️
I'm a sucker for pipes and drums at the best of times, but I was in tears before a minute was up - not only for the music, but for what it represented - the heroism of "the common soldiery" [of all times and all nations] young lives lost because of politics and criminal greed. thanks for posting!
I have the original music at my house! This was dedicated to my dad, WOII Danny Wight after the battle. Jimmy had a long battle with the drink after the Falklands, but his legacy lives on in one of the greatest pieces of pipe music ever!
My dad speaks fondly of yours every year mate. I was lucky he came home but just know your father will never be forgotten. Hope to see you next year at the 40th anniversary
I have watched quite a few videos about the Falklands on You Tube. Your father seems have had the total respect of his soldiers. Sounds like he was a great man. I know it happened in 1982, but you have my condolences for your loss. Every British serviceman who died has my total respect. God bless you and your family.
Pure class, did my Brecon course with a Scots guards L/Sargeant who got a mention in despatches from Tumbledown a topman. A regiment with a long proud tradition.
Hi tlt296. At 1.15 this is the West End of Tumbledown. In fact you are looking directly at G Companies objective for the attack and the crags behind are what Left flank had to take. This photo was taken from the exact same position that we advanced that night from our FUP behind Goats Ridge. The peak you can see to the right is Mount William which was the Gurkhas objective. They were advancing just to the left of us and kept to the North of Tumbledown so as to keep out of our way.
Thanks for the response mate . I know its a big day on the 14th for you lads . I found him on FB and sent him a thank-you note . You know what a great Character he is ....... Pure Scottish Quality ! Left flank is alright in my book . I met a few of his mates the day after our passing out parade . God speed to you all my friend and Thanks again , I'll be thinking of you all on the 14th , Scotland the Brave !
@yankeechai it was in memory of some scots guards and a royal egineer that died in the falklands tryin to capture mount tumbledown, hope that answers your question :)
Brilliant... my band played this tune in Edinburgh, in august 2010' for the pipefest marching down the Royal Mile.. ill find you the link, cheers Gilly..
Left Flank ...... Incredible unit ! Anyone know the whereabouts of Jock Davidson ? He trained me (peter the para) at Depot 84 . He set me up well before joining The Inkerman Company , Gren Gds . In fact he was one of my most influential people I've ever met .
Yes, I like it very much. Written right there, on the battlefield. Brave Scots, I hope we will be luckier next time we meet. From ARGENTINA: HONOR AL VALOR EN COMBATE - VIVA LA PATRIA
If it's all the same, I'd rather have Argentina on our side next time; easily the most honorable foes the British Army has fought for hundreds of years.
If you really mean that, thank you for your kind answer. War is always hell, as any vet could say; anyway, for fighting alongside the Britons we should settle the Malvinas issue first.
The tempo at the beginning is slower to represent the loss of the islands to the Argentines. The upbeat later at the quicker tempo represents the battle, and regaining of the islands by British forces.
Matthew, Danny was my Section Commander, Platoon Sergeant and friend I was your baby sitter in Munster 1973, Waterloo barracks, I was in the Anti Tank Platoon with your dad. I have some photos of us in Belieze (British Honduras)1972 if you would like.
@kingsweeting hiya mate,, i bet you are so proud of ya dad for drumming on this.. and so you should be pal, cos this tune will be around in 50 + years,, tell ya da from me, he's a good yen,, one of a kind .. cheers pal.. gilly..
I don't fully understand our country we go Thousands of miles to defend an Island and then we open the gates of our own country and allow just about anyone to live in the UK

I love that tune. I have the music sheet for the pipes , but I would really like to have the music sheets for the band which plays with the pipe-band. Where can I find it ?
+bleimor28 I'd like to have the band music too. We've been looking for any band music (with pipes of course) to play with our local community band. We played Highland Cathedral last summer and it was a great hit.

This tune starts sad then becomes so uplifting. It's become my favourite pipe tune. Well done brave highland laddies

Marched to this outstanding tune, back down the mall, at the completion of Trooping the Colour in 1985. 10ft tall Scots Guardsmen that day...!
Nice to see some ex serviceman on hear. I myself are currently serving in the scots guards and respect all that have served. Past and present

I remember this so much being played so much in Pirbright when I was in the Scots Guards 1982
Heard it in 83 on the North American Tour with the Royal Marines and Argyle and Sunderlands. The tune does stick with you over the years.
I have just spent an hour looking for this post on UA-cam Music and either I’m blind or it’s not there !
Great version Steve Cocks ….
Well done !
You are welcome

The pride is through the roof.
They took the mountain and upheld the tradition of the regiment
This is my favourite tune. Fully respect those who served there time in our services 🍺🍺

After the fall of the Soviet Union, the US Air Force Band played this song at the Kremlin in Moscow. Odd choice.
