I remember being a bit freaked out by The Good Son commercials. Coppola's Dracula withe the crucifix lighting in fire did too. As an adult, researching how Stoker wrote Dracula has been interesting.
I was in 4th grade in 93 and was watching snick on nickelodeon on Saturday night then my brother who was a senior would turn over to WGN to watch these movies and I'd be in awe! When he graduated i continued that tradition without him! So many memories! I love the nostalgia, keep these videos coming!!!
So weird to have passed time with you, dude. Started reading XE back when a 1993 tape wouldn't seem like archival footage. I'm only about a year younger, so all of this is in the memory box for me, too.
Back in the day with Monstervision, I'd record the movies and pride myself as an accomplished commercial-pauser. Now, I want to go back and slap myself. Thanks, Matt!
WPIX was my late night jam as a kid. I had a 13inch black and white in my bedroom and would watch at low volume 'The Honeymooners', 'Star Trek TOS' and 'The Twilight Zone'.
I remember when WPIX used to air The Exorcist at least once a year and I saw this broadcast (I was 14). The classic NYC channels always played great films. WNYW/WNEW 5 had their Drive-In Movie, WOR 9 had Fright Night and even WABC aired horror/suspense films on their Friday night Late Movie. That was how I first saw the Dr. Phibes movies and The Shuttered Room. Regarding The Exorcist, the version WPIX aired was reworked for TV by William Friedkin himself.
ugh i used to work so hard cutting the commercials out of my old vhs tapes to save room for more episodes of, i dunno, the x-men cartoon or monday nitro. never wondered if i'd regret that
My parents recorded a showing of “A Christmas Story” and “Mickey’s Christmas Carol” that aired in *i think* 1989 that I watched the hell out of growing up, mainly for the commercials. I love that video so much that I watch it all year long!
God, I miss WPIX's Shocktober movie showings. I remember seeing the Excorcist for the first time like this too! Many nights spent glued to the TV, seeing "Cats Eye" or "CreepShow" or "Amazing Stories" or "Poltergeist" was a safe spot for me and my sister.
I lived in NJ and enjoyed WPIX, this made me want to sit in my old house and watch Shocktober all over again, I was 13yrs old at the time and remember this night also, it ruined me forever, I never recovered from the Exorcist, channel 11 had movies forever and was a great alternative if you didn't have HBO or Showtime, I wish I was still a kid and never grew up, Nickelodeon, NBC, TBS, TNT, USA, were also gems for movies and tv shows, I realize how much footage was actually cut now that I'm 41
Awesome video! The mid 80's to early 90's were a really great period of innovative snack products. Chocodiles, P.B. MAXX, Burple etc. ...If I just had a time machine.
I love listening / reading when people talk about WPIX. It really hits the sweet spot of childhood memories. And DAMN Boku was delicious. That's one that's always on my list of discontinued food I'd love to have again.
Now I feel sad. When we first got a vcr, my dad made sure to get one with a little plugged-in remote that allowed him to pause recording. So whenever we taped a show or movie, he'd clip out the commercials during the broadcast. Geez, who would think we'd all ever look back so nostalgically, at nearly *everything*.
When I was young in the '80s even and The exorcist would come on cable or TV in the early eighties, I would intentionally get on my bike and ride around the neighborhood so I wouldn't have to be home if somebody in the house would happen to be watching the TV when The exorcist came on. I found it that disturbing and scary back then. Now as a adult, The Exorcist has to be in my top five favorite movies of all time
Love It Matt! Wish I still had all my recordings from back then. Teal is so 90s! 🤣🤣 I used to wear teal shirts, that Color was So Popular in the 90s. Now I can't stand It 😆✌️😎
I completely forgot about FunDaMiddles! They were pretty tasty if I recall correctly. Also that *69 commercial instantly teleported me back to that year! Thanks Matt! Would love more videos!
It is amazing how old commercials, and possibly even moreso promos for shows, give you that bit of what's missing when you simply binge old recordings. heck I still have nostalgia for those simpsons episodes where everything came out a little green or orange, ironic given how Groening supposedly made them all weird colors so people would have to mess with their tint settings.. WB and Nickelodeon were the most shameless in having fully customized promos for their shows being presented by other shows' characters. it was kind of wonderful. I guess cartoon network had their full-on little crossover shorts during commercial breaks, but that was more 'hehe we are warner we own everything now'
It was 18 and 1993 and I'm glad somebody else out there is curating content like this. I've often thought to myself with if there was a compendium of commercial medium of the times of the early 90s and here it is!
The air date of this showing was September 9th, 1993, with The Exorcist only facing reruns that night. If you wanted to watch more horror or horror-esque movies, The Hellstrom Chronicle was the late night movie on Channel 7. If you had pay cable, the director's cut of The Lawnmower Man was on The Movie Channel right after The Exorcist ended. Also on pay cable and if you were an insomniac who loved horror, Showtime had Body Bags on at 12:40 am while Cinemax had a double bill of Subspecies and Zombie High beginning at 2:30 am. Get some Jolt and your favorite late night snack and scare yourself (insert adjective here).
Such good content. Thank you! You’re spot on about people having similar stations. Here in the area around Seattle it’s KISW 11 and KCPQ 13. I’ve been searching for tapes of ANY broadcast of those stations from 1985-1995. Anyway, thanks again for a great video.
I remember the exorcist playing on air tv in 93 too! I was in elementary school though scared the shit out of me. Thanks for sharing! And thanks for the BK podcast!
Love these commercials! I am about the same age and though not from the same area, I had a local station that I watched all the time and this brought back some nice 90s memories. Thanks!!!!
My local channels like WPIX were KPLR which was channel 11 and WGN which I believe was channel 13 in the 90’s. I watched reruns of Freddy’s Nightmares, Disney Afternoons, Denver the Last Dinosaur, Widget, Bozo, Mario Bros Super Show, reruns of Kidd Video, all the greats.
@@nosmartyr When I was a kid my oldest brother actually entered a contest on KPLR and won a bunch of Denver, the Last Dinosaur merch. He gave me a plushie of Denver since he was “too old” for it.
Fun video! I only have a handful of my old tape recordings still on me, but most of them don't have the commercials in them (I'd hit pause every time a commercial break happened). Good for tape space, but not the best for nostalgia :c. Pretty sure I only set the VCR timer once or twice, but I'd have to scrub through those tapes again to see. Maybe that'll be my weekend project some day.
Oh hell yeah on some TRIPLES! It was my everyday go to for breakfast cereal in high school. Because everyone would pick the good stuff but leave the bowls of this I’d get at least 2 a day. The best thing to do with them is use the chocolate milk instead of white. The flavor of the cereal was boosted by it!
The commercials are always my favorite part of old recordings as well, and the way you covered these in detail was so great! I barely remember _Fun-Da-Middles_ , but I don't think they were around long after the stray box or two I had. They kind of remind me of oversized _Hidden Treasures_ cereal (but _Chex_ like you said.) I also agree that *69 was an absolute life saver before pagers and _Caller ID_ , and always made me giggle to say out loud.
Pleaseeeeee do more of these. I always adore your videos - this one in particular really hit home for me. And I’m sure many more of us. I admire you and your work so much. Never stop! The world needs so much more of Dinosaur Dracula! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video Matt! I was big into collecting/trading VHS recordings in the late 90s and early 2000s! I remember buying a tape from someone's website that was just a compilation of 80s commercials, Great stuff! Would love to see more videos like this!
This was such a great video Matt. Please do more of these. As someone who has had the same experiences, although mine was Monstervision, this really brought me back to the exact same place.
I've been a daily visitor to Dinosaur Dracula for years now and I always meant to see if you had a UA-cam channel. Lucky for me the algorithm god's smiled on me today. I'm looking forward to more videos from you!
Oh man this is great Matt quality content I loved watching every second. Based Gen X entertainment. This was equal to KCAL in Los Angeles, they did Disney Afternoons Disney eventually purchased the channel
I think the closest thing I had to your experience was my discovery of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Some local station was running episodes in syndication before our cable had Comedy Central, which we didn't get until after South Park became popular and MST3K moved to the Sci-Fi Channel. I watched it not really knowing what I was watching but intrigued anyway.
Damn, I forgot about Triples. They were pretty good. As soon as you said 'Richard Lewis' and 'adult juice box', I knew Boku was coming, haha. Hadn't thought of that ad for a long time.
In the late 90's on satellite up here in Canada, our feed of The WB was WPIX11, the WB11 I believe it was called around the turn of the millennium, so I have some memories of WPIX nostalgia from around that time period. I'm also old enough to remember the Star 69 ads, but a specific jingle that went "STAR 69! GET THEM BACK ON THE LINE!".

amazing work as always. I miss fundamiddles a ton. Dude, once I ran up the phone bill calling a 1900 trivia hotline, and I rued when my parents got the bill, so I feel you on the *69 thing!
This channel embodies the only thing good about being an adult, remembering the time in the 80s and 90s when life didn't suck.

Yes WPIX was THE station back in the day! I’m from New York, that channel was always on…
WPIX was a Sunday staple in my house. I always loved hearing the gravelly voice of the late Doug Paul during the bumpers.
It’s crazy how comforting the TV station segues are.
I love watching old commercial compilations
We had cable TV as early as 1982 and still WPIX remained one of my top go to channels for years. Please more videos on old TV commercials Matt! 🦖🧛🏻♂
