I watch it multiple times during the Halloween season, to me it is as important as The Great Pumpkin, because it was the Halloween Special from our generation
I remember seeing this 23 years ago. It really was a different time. I remember because it was my dad's birthday. Very different time period from things now. I wasn't an 80's kid, but was absolutely a 90's kid. A lot of kids these days think I drone on when I talk about it, but 1999 was exciting because it was the turn of a new millennium, and it was being hyped by everyone well into the holiday season. Thank you for bringing this back to the forefront of my mind.
Halloween is Grinch Night was always my favorite and it was an extremely rare broadcast. The only channel I remember it being on was Disney and maybe TNT. Of course now I can watch it whenever.
I remember buying the holiday special garfield dvd back in the dark days when the Halloween Special was no longer being aired. It was a beautiful day. And yes, the Garfield special was very scary.
Cool to see this! I bought an official DVD copy of the special and noticed that they rearranged the order of things so the song comes first. I was disappointed that they'd done that. Someone posted the original edit and I prefer to watch that. Thanks again.
I can still remember being so excited to watch this every October. I was OBSESSED with Garfield as a tween back in the early 90s. As soon as they came out with the holiday DVD I was watching it on repeat. Now hearing my 5 year old say "Candy candy candy" my life's purpose is complete 😆 Our family is really enjoying this series and hope you do a few more.
I had no idea it was aired so few times. I watched our VHS recording of it every year, which I now realize must have been from between 1987-89. I'd always assumed it was from the early '90s. These days, I watch the DVD every year, but this makes me want to dig out the old VHS and check out the commercials.
I love the Garfield Halloween special but I STILL find it gives me an unsettled, haunting feeling...it really was top tier horror in children's programming... (Hi Halloween! 😻)
as a MASSIVE garfield and horror fan, gotta say this is my favorite video so far! So cool and entertaining as always. Love seeing the commercials and feeling the vibe of the time.
10:18 America Online WAS the internet back in the day. I remember going from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, and that was the only form of internet we knew. It didn't always work, we would often have to sit in a queue just to enter a chat room, but everything it had available to us made our computer life-changing. I remember constantly asking my mom if I could download demos for games, waiting up to 5 minutes for pictures to load, and being lucky if I got a short video clip to load.
I still watch this every year, I had it recorded, but the tape eventually wore out along with my other tape that had the pilot for the battletoads cartoon that aired one thanksgiving. I'm glad that I can still watch Garfield halloween special on their youtube channel.
I love this special, watch it every year! From the kids who are actually ghosts and goblins, to the ghost pirates who come back to claim their treasure, the ambience just can’t be found in many other specials.
Wow, I did not know it took a break in the '90s. By then, I was a little too old for it. So I just thought it kept going. Yeah, for kids my age (and Matt's, a year older) this was definitely a major part of Halloween. My test every year was not to jump a million feet in the air when the ghosts burst into the cabinet where Garfield and Odie are hiding! 5 year old me must've hit the damn ceiling the first time I saw it!
My favourite Halloween special ever. I actually watched this with my kids this afternoon. This special is older than they are but they know all the song lyrics and can sing along 🎃 🎶
Listen to PSPC all year but your videos have become a tradition around here during this time of the season. I get nostalgic just hearing your background music. Please keep it up man.
Sooo much nostalgia ! This brings me right back to when I was 10, hanging out after school with my best friend Carl. He had this recorded on a vhs (with the commercials) and I watched it for the first time ! That was 35 years ago … man what I wouldn’t give to have that VHS now ! Great post Matt !!
Great video, thank you. Love the brick background on top of the table overlay for the TV. Makes me feel like I'm outside watching a portable TV at my grandparents' house on Halloween!
I love these retrospectives. I think it would be cool if you could make a playlist based off of the old X-enterainment Halloween jukebox you had on your page.
I remember my family had a VHS that had both Charlie brown & Garfield's Halloween specials, I think also there was the Winnie the pooh Halloween special too with a Mickey mouse short that had Mickey Donald and Goof against some ghost. I'm not sure if my parents changed channels during recordings but commercials I remember were Oreo O's Cereal, Looney Tunes Miracle Whip and a Sesame Street Walk & Talk Pals.
I would like to start a petition to make Matt only refer to skeletons as spooky bois. Also, a cameo by Halloween the cute cat! Please give Halloween a nice spoopy scritch for me, Matt
I’ll be 31 in a few days and that Grape Nuts commercial sent me into a tailspin of nostalgia. I need to go sign that petition now. Thanks for the seasonal goodness! Please give Halloween a few pets from me.
I feel like I probably never saw this special in prime time. In 1999, I was a freshman in high school and too cool to watch kid’s cartoons on a Friday night. In 1989, the last time it aired, I was 4 and probably went to bed before it came on lol. Still, those commercials definitely made me nostalgic for my youth, especially the AOL 5.0 one. I spent so much time using AIM to chat with people.
I have a videotaped copy of the original 1985 airing of "Garfield's Halloween Adventure." I can't remember if I have all the commercial breaks, but it's definitely possible.
On my last day as an elementary school teacher in Tokyo I was scheduled to teach Halloween vocabulary(in April?). I thought screw that, and instead screened Garfield’s Halloween Special in its entirety in every one of my classes. The old man scene made 1st grade children cry. It was hilarious.
you know, I recall the late 90s being way *more* restrictive than the 80s in terms of a lot of things. parents getting pissy about cartoons based on horror properties definitely stands out. but you do have a point that we BRIEFLY had a little more risque stuff on commercials
I'm surprised you didn't touch on the part where a lot of people now think that Garfield says "FUCK IT!". Basically in the scene where they're still in the ghost filled kitchen, Garfield and Odie are running around the table, and it sounds like Garfield says "Fuck it", but that's mainly because of degraded audio. He actually says "WATCH IT!" because Odie was in his way as he was trying to run from the ghosts.
A little bit of trivia about super Kmarts or big Kmart. That was Kmart's first and only attempt into creating Mega stores. Kmart failed, and there's an entire story behind that, but the idea was picked up by Target and Walmart which is why you have Super Targets and super walmarts. There weren't a lot of big Kmarts but the ones that existed work tourist locations in many areas. They had a grocery section, they had clothing, they had a separate Garden shop. Essentially they tried and failed at something that Walmart turned into their standard template
McDonalds brought back the boo buckets just started selling them yesterday if you're interested. I got the McBoo bucket today. Not quite the same with the fake lid handle but what can you do.
the SatAM landscape was shit in the late 1990s thanks to the ramping of the "Be Educational or Else" part of the Childrens TV Act of 1990 by the FCC They started the Educational or Else ultimatum in 1997-1998 and the big victim was Weird Al as CBS ran Weird Al thru the ringer during his only season of "The Weird Al Show" and the shows that have the E/I branding either only last 1 season or have shitty time slots like Channel Umptee-3, Hysteria!, Wheel 2000, Jep! and others as for NEW Tales from the Cryptkeeper, It was bundled with a Legends of the Hidden Temple ripoff hosted by the actual Cryptkeeper puppet (original voice and all) - not to mention, "NEW Tales from the Cryptkeeper" was basically a more watered down of the show that aired on ABC - basically, less scares and morality sledgehammers abound!
I got them saved on my devices, who knows if something will happen to them one day, your PC for example is personal and is owned by you while youtube isn't, So it's always great to have a back up.
My Halloween costume for 1999 was padawan Anakin, from the last scene of Episode I. I definitely wasn’t Obi Wan from the rest of the movie, and I was very vehement about it, even though it’s basically the exact same costume.
Im surprised they were still playing this on TV in 1999. I know TV was still good back then, unlike today's drabness that plagues the tube. But I thought they would have stopped airing Garfield by then.
Man, I completely forgot CBS even had a Saturday morning block around this time. Goes to show their standings at the time I guess. By '99 the rankings were probably Kids WB (Pokemon) > Fox Kids (Digimon/Power Rangers) > ABC 1 Saturday Morning (uhhh, Pepper Ann? Recess?) > ??? > Whatever CBS was doing, lol
The really edgy Energizer ad would have involved the wife having a similar problem with batteries going dead at an inopportune time when she was alone.
PLEASE COMBINE YOUR NOSTAGLIA POWERS WITH FOUND FOOTAGE FESTVIAL'S SHATURDAY MORNING CARTOONS! I have loved your content since the X-entertainment days
Thank you for keeping Halloween, Halloween.
Thank you Halloween the Cat
I love your videos Drac.
I watch it multiple times during the Halloween season, to me it is as important as The Great Pumpkin, because it was the Halloween Special from our generation
Might seem like sacrilege to some, but IMHO Garfield and pirate ghosts blows away the Great Pumpkin by a country mile.
I have this on VHS with all the commercials from when it originally aired in 85. Hands-down my favorite piece of Halloween nostalgia!!!
I watch Garfield's Halloween Adventure every October. I was used to be terrified of the man in the cabin and the ghosts but still loved watching it.
I remember seeing this 23 years ago. It really was a different time. I remember because it was my dad's birthday.
Very different time period from things now. I wasn't an 80's kid, but was absolutely a 90's kid. Hell yeah, the Garfield specials were just awesome, luckily I have them all in 1080p. Their still nice to watch to this day, the nostalgia be real.
I know "Ladies Man" was a sitcom she was on, but seeing "Betty White - Ladies Man" at the end filled me with delight. Hey, she had the charm.
Betty White was a self proclaimed "Zoophile".
I messaged you once on AOL IM back in the day. I thought it was so cool that you replied lol. Love all the work you put in each holiday season!
Awww love seeing Halloween the cat make an appearance!
Please show more of Halloween on camera. We love him.
I remember watching this back in 85. It's still one of my favorite Halloween specials.
Cool to see this! I bought an official DVD copy of the special and noticed that they rearranged the order of things so the song comes first. I was disappointed that they'd done that. Someone posted the original edit and I prefer to watch that. Thanks again.
And less than a year later I would be following you on XE. Crazy that it doesn't seem like it was that long ago.
I know it was a show title at the time, but it's still funny to see "Betty White: Ladies' Man". Dang, that's versatile talent.
I can still remember being so excited to watch this every October. I was OBSESSED with Garfield as a tween back in the early 90s. The K-mart snack bar sub sandwich in the 80s was proof of the divine - thank you for another great bump of Halloween!

I wish you upload a video 365, i freakin love em all man.
Listen to PSPC all year but your videos have become a tradition around here during this time of the season. I get nostalgic just hearing your background music. Please keep it up man.

Love you videos, you really know how to get a ghoul in the mood.
Great video, thank you. Love the brick background on top of the table overlay for the TV. Makes me feel like I'm outside watching a portable TV at my grandparents' house on Halloween!
Please keep the Halloween videos coming. Will always like and watch. I'm a Halloween head! I love Halloween. I really appreciate the videos. 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃 🎃
Thank you so much for this. God I love these old cartoons. I used to buy all the garfield comic books. Thanks fornthe blast from the past.
This made me so nostalgic I immediately had to go find a used DVD on eBay. Love everything so far for Halloween 2022, Matt! 🎃🙏😍👻
Wow what a nostalgia bomb! Great one, Matt!
I love these retrospectives. I think it would be cool if you could make a playlist based off of the old X-enterainment Halloween jukebox you had on your page.
My fav Halloween special, alwsys has been, make my son watch with me every year at least twice lol the goat
Oh, hey! The princess from the Honey Nut Cheerios commercial is Lisa Ann Hadley, who briefly played Luke's girlfriend Rachel on Gilmore Girls.
Please do more videos like this throughout the year -- this was a lot of fun to watch!

Such a great video! Nostalgia is powerful, and Matt is an expert at breathing new life into again for the masses. Thank you so much, Matt!
Love these broadcast deep dives, Matt! I'm hoping you do some more this holiday season.
I’ll be 31 in a few days and that Grape Nuts commercial sent me into a tailspin of nostalgia. I need to go sign that petition now.
Thanks for the seasonal goodness! Please give Halloween a few pets from me.
Your show is a gem, and I loved finding it. Enjoyed the show, how it was delivered and the incredible nostalgic content. thank you
I feel like I probably never saw this special in prime time. In 1999, I was a freshman in high school and too cool to watch kid’s cartoons on a Friday night. I saw this vid and had to rewatch Garfield before watching this vid. Always fun content
This is awesome 🧡🎃👏👏 my favorite Halloween special and I was in high school during this final airing.
My favourite Halloween special, period.
I have a videotaped copy of the original 1985 airing of "Garfield's Halloween Adventure." I can't remember if I have all the commercial breaks, but it's definitely possible.
So glad to find you uploaded a video while I'm at work..makes my night so much better & interesting xD
I love seeing the commercials as they were during a holiday special.
OMG Halloween Cameo! Such a good kitty.
I was Darth Maul that Halloween. was 8. Thanks for the nostalgia!
Brilliant! I have I have an earlier recording of this. I need to dig into that tape.
This was great. The commentary on the Energizer commercial made me laugh pretty hard.
Great channel, love the Purple Stuff Podcast too👍🏻
Oh god I have that Kermit doll!
This special scared the crap out of me when I was a kid
The old man looks like something out of Liquid Television.
Love the cameo by Halloween!
I also remember watching the Garfield Christmas special on CBS in either '98 or '99.
Never stop making content, Matt! Love what you do.
you know, I recall the late 90s being way *more* restrictive than the 80s in terms of a lot of things. parents getting pissy about cartoons based on horror properties definitely stands out.

It's hilarious.
Spot on with that Phantom Menace/Big Kmart commercial. I would later buy the AotC DVD at Super Kmart.
Thanks for this Matt. Love remembering the Garfield Halloween Special. Watching it now is fun, but back then it was pretty scary. Super nostalgia. 🎃
Super cool Dinosaur Dracula I love collecting prerecorded blank VHS tapes from ebay buddy. 👍❤️
The merchandising juggernaut for Episode 1 was absolutely flawless.
I hope you come back to UA-cam. I feel you’re meant for it.
A little bit of trivia about super Kmarts or big Kmart. That was Kmart's first and only attempt into creating Mega stores. Kmart failed, and there's an entire story behind that, but the idea was picked up by Target and Walmart which is why you have Super Targets and super walmarts.

I bought Garfield's Halloween episode on Amazon I'll watch it all throughout October one of my favorites
I remember that Amidala commercial! I dressed as her in 2nd grade because of that.
why don't you make videos anymore?
Garfield and cartoon Crypt Keeper all in one video?! Yeah!
now THIS is content!
I remember this Garfield, Halloween Special. Super nostalgia. 🎃 🎃 🎃
McDonalds brought back the boo buckets just started selling them yesterday if you're interested. I got the McBoo bucket today. Not quite the same with the fake lid handle but what can you do.
A Sunday night treat? For me? Thanks, Matt!
Also It blew my mind when I found out that Europe has a pink bunny for Duracell and we got it for energizer
I had one from the late '80s. Long gone sadly.
That inside edition clip is sadly and clearly on point.
the SatAM landscape was shit in the late 1990s thanks to the ramping of the "Be Educational or Else" part of the Childrens TV Act of 1990 by the FCC
They started the Educational or Else ultimatum in 1997-1998 and the big victim was Weird Al as CBS ran Weird Al thru the ringer during his only season of "The Weird Al Show"

Luckily, the Garfield Halloween special is here on UA-cam on the Garfield & Friends UA-cam channel!
I got them saved on my devices, who knows if something will happen to them one day, your PC for example is personal and is owned by you while youtube isn't,
So it's always great to have a back up.
It’s my favorite Episode
I lean much harder towards "magic bones" than "spooky bois".
My Halloween costume for 1999 was padawan Anakin, from the last scene of Episode I. I definitely wasn’t Obi Wan from the rest of the movie, and I was very vehement about it, even though it’s basically the exact same costume.

Im pretty sure thats Gina Rodriguez in the aol commercial 9:41
1994 AOL I ran the Buccaneers message board thing.
Yaaaaay! Halloween 🧡😻
I'm surprised those hard to see out of masks the kids are wearing in the Kmart commercial were still around in 1999.
all the original commercials 💥🙆
Man, I completely forgot CBS even had a Saturday morning block around this time. Goes to show their standings at the time I guess. Garfield's Halloween special came out in 1985.
That priest was like 12 feet tall. He looked like an alien
