Does the pothos root have to be in contact with soil for it to grow or i can cover it in a ball og sphagnum moss and hang it somewhere along the cork bark?
Hey guys can someone help me? I have had two young tokay geckos for a month, I have a 1 meter high and 90 wide terrarium where I keep them. I have a temperature of 28-30 degrees in the terrarium. I spray the terrarium twice a day for moisture. but i have the problem that since i got them they haven't eaten once i have offered them many insects but they are not interested. However, the geckos are active at night and show no signs of being unwell, what can be the reason that the geckos are not eating?
In a Bioactive Enclosure the major con is that you want to have a balance of all the living things, but it is very hard to actually achive. The big animals should not eat the clean up crew, but they also shoud not take over because especially isopods can start eating the plants/moss. You also need to fill all niches not filled by the enhabitans, f.e. cutting the plants (big herbivores would do this in the wild) and adding new leaf litter (big trees would provide it in the wild). I feel like many people think you can create a bioactive setup and then never have to do anything again, but that is not true. However, I really believe that it is by far the best way to keep your animals. All setups I have are bioactive, and I had my fair share of problems, but I wouldn't do it any other way. My favorite experience was seeing my crested gecko hunt the stick insects that were in his enclosure. Made me feel like I really recreated the wild nature somewhat.
Very well said! Thank you for sharing your response! Sometimes it's safer to say we are creating "naturalistic vivaria" as opposed to true bioactive in my honest opinion.
Man you take such good care of your tokays. There are some awful tokay videos on UA-cam with people just stressing them out to the max ripping them outta their homes and restraining them so bad.
It's really not. Reptiles, with the rare exception of social ones that need to be kept in groups to feel secure, are solitary animals. They do not experience family 'bonds' like mammals and other animals do. This is actually an example of dominant behavior. People think reptiles 'piling' are snuggling or enjoying the closeness of each other, this is actually a very tense behavior used to attempt to establish hierarchy in an environment unnatural to how they'd normally live and vie for the best hiding place. These animals are certainly stressed out and I can guarantee one or more will get injured when they inevitably fight, whether that's a couple weeks or a couple years from now. People who cohab solitary reptiles like leopard geckos, crested geckos, bearded dragons, etc. always say "they've been fine for years!" and then they wake up to bloody mess. Not to mention animals that can be found living near each other in loose groups have their entire environment to establish territories and get away from each other. We keep our pets in terrariums with no way to escape each other or leave if situations get stressful. Cohabbing solitary reptiles has absolutely no benefit to the animals themselves, it is a selfish practice done only for the keeper's benefit.
I think it is so cool how they protected the babies like that amazing it’s so cool to watch I honestly live vicariously through your Chanel and all your wonderful well taken care of pets the love u have for each and everyone takes a special kind of person!!!
They are really amazing parents! And siblings! Besides being cheeky and sometimes trying to steel food from each other they are very gentle with one another and protect each other! A unique dynamic to see amongst reptiles!
Cork tube full of cranky geckos 🤣. It is so unfortunate that you had the plant pests. At the end of the day, the revamped enclosure came out fantastic!
New haircut looking snazzy! I really like seeing the trouble-shooting bits of the hobby like this. It’s something that seems to be pretty unique to your channel.
I love that setup for your tokays! The pothos looks fantastic already, it’ll only get better, I think it was a great choice!! I sure wish I could have one of those beautiful babies 💗 After having kept many artificial setups over the years, I honestly can’t think of anything negative about bioactive! I love it for my frogs.
Looks good! I don't mind full bio for reptiles, but I finally gave up on live plants in with my tarantulas and switched to plastic. A large majority of my T's are arboreal, and the poop shooting was just a mess on the plants. Now, I just periodically pull them out and give them a swish. Everything is much fresher.
The tokay setup looks great man I hope it grows fantastically and what I would say is one of the biggest issues with a bioactive enclosure mostly is the difficulty of keeping pests out of the enclosure throughout the changes of the seasons, you have to constantly be aware of your surroundings and checking the whole room to find the problem for just one tank🤦🏽♂️
When I was a little girl living in the country in a Oregon and Washington I loved catching baby Garter snakes. Once I found a bundle of them I would spend hours observing them and then handling them. It was bliss. I loved wrapping them around my fingers. Then I would leave to go home leaving them in their own home in nature. Love your new hognose babies. ☺️☺️🥰
I love my frogs bioactive. I even love opening the doors and smelling the woodsy forest smell. It doesn’t smell bad ever. And I do love my little isopods running around on there too. Now, BECAUSE OF YOU!!!! I have 4 colonies of isopods. Powdery orange, magic potion, dwarf whites and Dairy Cows. They are very cute attending to their household tasks every day. (I have some in glass sphere terrariums so I can see them). So thanks for THAT. Lol. I still want one of your baby Tokays. That baby biting you is still not on the same level as most Tokays. So they’ve learned from watching their parents you’re ok. Even if they balk at being held still. Try to wrap you hands around my Severe Macaws body with his wings pinned down, you will be bloody 100% guaranteed. And he’s lived his whole life with humans who LOVE him.
Perfect timing, i just bought a beautiful (asshole) pair of tokays earlier today. Super happy about the setup i did, reptibreeze with acrylic sides custom fit with an open front and top. The dude is currently running around the walls and the girl is still hiding under the log since earlier.
I loved this video. Very informational and adorable observing that Tokay family. My only complaint about bioactive is more watering but I prefer it for my reptiles and amphibians. 💚
I love this video so much! Both amazing and adorable how they all fit into the cork round together. Those tails! 🥰 I can’t wait to see what the Pothos looks like filled in. I am daunted by bioactive, I’m just starting to get into it so I’m pretty clueless. Everything feels like a con because it just feels pretty overwhelming right now! Will the springtails alone take care of the feces, without the help of isopods in your new setup? I think that’s what you said, that you were only using springtails for it.
Thank you so much! Tbh, regardless of isopods + spring tails, I strongly recommend that folks manually remove feces from their animals enclosures. It's just cleaner and presents the risk of a parasite life cycle running full circle if your pet chooses to ingest any cleanup crew that fed on fecal material.
Hey dayyan, I love the tokay family so much they’re so cute all together. My fiancé hadn’t seen your videos in a while and he said wow has he been working out? He looks amazing! We love men hyping up other men.
On a sort of related note, I have a larger Keurig brewer with the side attached reservoir. It is a little more than 11 years old. Over its entire life I have run 1 tank of tap water and 3-ish tanks of "spring water". The rest have all been distilled. Have never had a single service issue in that time. I heartily endorse using distilled water whenever you can get it. I also use distilled exclusively when making batches of Bug Burger. I have heard that tap is usually ok for reptiles but could be an issue for the cleanup crew.
I know you still don't believe me but making your tokay enclosures much bigger and much more full of plants will make them behave much more naturally. They will always be on the glass, never hiding, and always be bright and blue instead of dark. I'm gonna keep reminding you whether you like it or not! Ideal size for a single male tokay is like, 4x4x2, IMO. They will be calling all the time Just happier, prettier, fatter cause they can exercise...a tokay can jump farther than the entire size of your enclosure. Anyway...love your tokay videos, but I'd love them more if you considered this! Bigger area per gecko will help ALOT with pests too!
@@Jordan-sd7rhI mean, it’s an active lizard that gets well over 12 inches long at full grown. The only reason we think it’s okay to use such small enclosures is because it’s a gecko, and most of the geckos are pretty sedentary. Isn’t the rule “bigger is better”? If the enclosure is properly set up, why not give a large lizard a large enclosure?
With my animals, I prefer bioactive (or at least planted, naturalistic) enclosures, because many of my animals hide. If you get more adventurous, you can plant flowering plants, and really make your room smell amazing.
@@ReptiliatusSo I'm rewatching a bunch of your videos, and I ran across this one again. I'm curious if you've ever tried to use biological controls for pests like thrips and scale bugs. Have you tried adding ladybugs or predatory mites?
Hello Dion, I hope that I spelled your name correctly. Anyway it’s always great to see you! I hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving day. I love watching your videos, I learn so much about reptiles! I bought two crested geckos and named them after Tiki and Torch. Take care and I look forward to seeing your next video 💖💕
Pothos is a great plant, but did you know there are SO many more varieties now than the "basic" golden? You can get all sorts of variegation and different looks and keep the hardiness of the plant ;)
Can you tame down a Tokay Gecko? Have you ever tried? They have intrigued me ever since I went to Kauai and they were running around all over the inside of our condo. I loved their little barks at night! They didn’t bother us one bit, just hung out on the walls and would occasionally bark at us if we walked too close to them Lol
Dion, the Tokay whisperer ;) the timelapse was funny seeing how u struggled with those already caught Tokays getting out again.. just curious, why did you not just catch them one by one in small cups just for the period of redecorating the enclosure? Might have been far quicker to catch them all
Honestly, I don’t like to stress my tokays. My logic was to take the extra time to make it less stressful for them. I also really value having my animals feel safe around me so I didn’t want to reverse my taming efforts by trying to trap them in cups even though I had to with a few of the juveniles that ran away up the walls haha.
So I’m a little new to the hobby and made my first bio active Vivarium. Plant pests were always a worry for me, how did your pests appear? And how do you prevent them?
Welcome! It's sort of the same as any situation with plants, it's when you bring in a new plant without realizing it has pests hidden on it. I must have introduced them to the enclosure and they went unnoticed for a bit before it was too late :(! It's also tricky treating plants when you have animals living in the enclosure too because you obviously can't use pesticides, etc. I usually use bio control in the form of predatory mites, fungi, etc. Hope that helps!
Hi Dayyan! I'm so glad that you didn't have to throw EVERYTHING out in the "old" enclosure. I'm glad the Tokays are doing well. Are you going to separate the offspring or sell them or maybe keep them all together? I'm interested to know. ☺️ I hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend. I'm not sure if Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving. But, I'm a Southerner and we value our manners!
Thanks so much Tracey! Me too! I will actually be selling/rehoming all of them! I don't plan to keep too many tokays so it's nice to be able to find the babies loving homes and spread the tokay love! Haha we had our thanksgiving back in October actually! Hope you had a nice thanksgiving!
Hey Reptiliatus, I just recently learned that tokay geckos can vocalize, which makes me wonder how noisy they are if at all. I’ve also learned that their call is loud enough to keep people awake at night. Have you experienced this at all? Side note: I’ve really been enjoying your videos, keep up the great work!
Looks great and as a plant lover, that scale😭😭😭😭 I do have a question about the family group. How many geckos will be too many, in a confined space, before they start being aggressive to each other? Will the male offspring start fighting eventually. Thanks for your time 😁
Yea they are def a great option when you have a lot of tanks! Def a lot of work if you have a stand alone and want a plug and play which is why I really love using my 3 monsoons too!
Great video! Love the Tokay family :) I would say a con for bio active for me would be the gnats/small flies? I try hard not to over mist and I always seem to get them :/ any advice?
Thank you Tom! Very true! There are some great bio control options to help remedy those pests but it can certainly be quite a nuisance! Thank you for your support and for sharing!
Hey Reptiliatus I was wondering where you get your containers you keep your tarantulas in I’ve been trying to find something new for mine I would love to know I’d also want to know where you would recommend getting some pothos plants thanks man, ps keep up the great content I love it.
Hi looking at getting a tokay gecko ,I live in U.K. so need something for night time heat what would you recommend. The the work you do alway look forward to the next video.
Hi! I would recommend a low watt ceramic heat emitter or a blue heat light. The red lights aren’t good because the animals do see that light and it disrupts their day/night cycle! Hope that helps! 😊
Ah pests are the worst, especially thrips 😬 I really feel like pests are the worst thing about bioactives. Fungus knats seem to be the most common but unlike the pests you encountered in the tokay enclosure they're mostly just an annoyance.
@@Reptiliatus ahh okay cool I was wondering cuz I have a pair but both of them look pretty skinny & im sure there wild caught but I also have this other female which is pied & she’s very beautiful but she’s healthy & chubby
That’s one very big and very happy family of geckos! I’d suggest looking for a tank on a classifieds page :). You can sometimes find great deals on terrariums. I recommend no smaller than an 18x18x24 for 1-2 tokay geckos.
I'd buy a cheap bookcase, some plexiglass / acrylic, window screen, and some vinyl wrap. Most cages the proper size are massive expensive and barely available. Or keep an eye out for used stuff....mention it to your local pet stores...they often "toss out" older well used store enclosures...or sell for next to nothing. Lots of custom built stuff goes for nothing.
@@jellybean4320 Just a reminder too...tokays get BIG for a gecko...mine was almost 16" long! so an 18" depth tank is definitely NOT big enough for an adult male tokay! Definitely not two! My male standing vertical on the glass of a 24" tall enclosure...his nose would be on the ceiling, and tail almost in the substrate.

@@Reptiliatus Yes they do, but in t he philippines theyre also kind of considered as an predator because they soemtimes eat small dogs/ cats or other small pets + they are noisy
Keep almost all my reptiles fully bio. However I have a few special needs reptiles that the plants would get in the way of trying to get to them. Also have a few tokays that I am handling daily. There is no way that I can work on hand taming them if there are plants and an entire scape to try to work around.
With scale I'm fairly confident it's mostly on the plants and not the decor. I've also never had scale attack Pothos which is why I was so relaxed about that but you are absolutely right had I been using any other type of plant!

I loved their little barks at night! They didn’t bother us one bit, just hung out on the walls and would occasionally bark at us if we walked too close to them Lol
Yooo, I just got my new 36" X 18" x36" paludarium home to upgrade my tokay enclosure! Perfect timing!
Fantastic! That’ll be awesome!
@@Reptiliatus I'm trying something new out and putting bamboo flooring in for the back wall
What is the size of that enclosure? What brand? Do you have a link?
Amazing video!!!
@@Reptiliatus It helps a lot!! Thank you very much!
I’ve found that diatomaceous earth works great for killing off unwanted insects in the enclosure!
Thanks for the tip!
Hey Dayyan, I was wondering how long could you keep baby tokaya with the parents and have no issues? 😊 Thanks
Cool video, is the plan to keep some juveniles for future pairs or move them all on at a certain size?
Thanks! They’ll all be for sale tbh :). I’ve already sold some to enthusiastic future Tokay owners!
AYOK KAK KUNJUNGI ANIMAL PREMIUM 🐒🐷🐷🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hey Reptiliatus, I just recently learned that tokay geckos can vocalize, which makes me wonder how noisy they are if at all. I’ve also learned that their call is loud enough to keep people awake at night. Have you experienced this at all?
Side note: I’ve really been enjoying your videos, keep up the great work!
Of all the animals/reptiles, the only one I have a phobia/fear of is the gecko, but I watch videos of them to try to combat this childhood trauma.
Stunning setup.
Thanks so much Chantal!
Thank youuuuuuuu for your videos....
Lots of love and respect and greetings from me in Amsterdam the Netherlands 👋🤗😘😊🕷❤🐞🦋💞
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
@@Reptiliatus I love to watch your videos.....
Thank you for making them for so long !!!
@@mereyemsuzanne8635 thank you! I really appreciate your support and viewership!
@@Reptiliatus 😊😊😊🤩
I hope friendship !
Looks great and as a plant lover, that scale😭😭😭😭 I do have a question about the family group. How many geckos will be too many, in a confined space, before they start being aggressive to each other? Will the male offspring start fighting eventually. Thanks for your time 😁
Hi! May I know the size of the Exo Terra tank you are using for this big family of Tokays?
how did you set up the misting system in a vivarium that is not made for Exo terra misters? For my red eyed tree frog.
They are gorgeous
Thank you so much!
Did you bake the cork bark to clear it of living pest?
What was the pink thing you were feeding the tokay at the beginning of the vid ?
I think the main negative about bio-active is that it’s not a good idea for small bedrooms.
I use a mistking and love it . Plus one system can run multiple enclosures
Thanks for your support! Honestly I buy them at a certain dollar store chain called “Dollarama” 😅
@@Reptiliatus thanks man I appreciate it
Hi looking at getting a tokay gecko ,I live in U.K. so need something for night time heat what would you recommend.
What size tank do you need for two Tokay geckos need and can you keep a male and female together for their whole life?
Hi can you tell me how big is your terrarium for the Tokays?
Does tokay gecko fits 30 gallon thrive kit 24 by 24 tropical?
what did you treat your background with?
1:40 get isopods and springtails for that
You have really cool animal ^^
Thank you!
Saya sangat menyukai tokek, mereka sangat lucu. Saya berharap bisa menemukan mereka juga, terimakasih untuk videonya
Not scale ☠️☠️☠️☠️ they are going to love the new digs !!
The worst! Thank you! I hope so!
Hey dion are your tokays wild caught or cb ? If they are wild caught how did you get them to eat & how did you de worm them ?
Both of them are cb! I raised Tiki since he was 1 week old! I would recommend a vet checkup and fecals/parasite treatment for wc tokays.
@@Reptiliatus ahh okay cool I was wondering cuz I have a pair but both of them look pretty skinny & im sure there wild caught but I also have this other female which is pied & she’s very beautiful but she’s healthy & chubby
How does everyone deal with mold? I have various pillbugs and Springtails, they mostly just get eaten or work their way to my drainage layer. 😐
What you are doing is great! Also balancing ventilation/humidity but yes, the spring tails contribute a lot to helping with that!
How do you set the temperature?
That stand for the geckos. Where did you get it‽
It’s made by Exo Terra :)
How do you preserve the isopod population?
i had sev b4, compared w other spices, Tokay Gecko is more fierce that ll bite u if they r familar w u, causing blooding
Thats a lot of tokays.. btw do you have any cage recommendations for people who are on a budget?
That’s one very big and very happy family of geckos! I’d suggest looking for a tank on a classifieds page :). You can sometimes find great deals on terrariums. I recommend no smaller than an 18x18x24 for 1-2 tokay geckos.
@@Reptiliatus Thank you! I will make sure to try and save up
I'd buy a cheap bookcase, some plexiglass / acrylic, window screen, and some vinyl wrap. Most cages the proper size are massive expensive and barely available. Or keep an eye out for used stuff....mention it to your local pet stores...they often "toss out" older well used store enclosures...or sell for next to nothing. Lots of custom built stuff goes for nothing.
@@AaronHendu great suggestions! Thanks!
Rainwater works too for misting
I’m digging the Stash D lol !!! 🥸
Haha thanks very much! 👨🏻
Tokek dirumah saya banyak Tapi susah menangkap nya saya hanya Bisa Mendengar suara nya Karena rumah saya dekat hutan jadi masih Banyak hewan unik ,Salam dari Indonesia
I found a GIGANTIC tokay gecko 🦎 I caught it and it bit me 😢but It gained my trust when I fed it meal worms
Ouch! Sounds like things ended well though! Thanks for sharing!
What enclosure size is that
If you love plants and you love reptiles then is bioactive setup the Best off both worlds. Have 3 setups bioactive and i like it a lot..
Well said! 🦎🌿
Tokay geckos: very angry bois
Nah, they really aren’t that bad! They are wonderful pet lizards! Beautiful display animals!
@@Reptiliatus I know but hey their anger builds character in a way also do you plan on giving the other geckos there own enclosures?
Couldn't the springtails have taken care of the plant pests or any isopods?
Springtails don't hunt pests unfortunately. There are some predatory mites that do!
This bioactive or not??
in the philipines geckos would get hunted down if there are any in an house so geckoes are kinda rare
That’s sad :(. They help eat pest insects!
@@Reptiliatus Yes they do, but in t he philippines theyre also kind of considered as an predator because they soemtimes eat small dogs/ cats or other small pets + they are noisy
My man I think you deleted your Kijiji add I was chatting with you on! You going to the show Sunday??
Yes! I'll be there!
Keep almost all my reptiles fully bio. However I have a few special needs reptiles that the plants would get in the way of trying to get to them. Also have a few tokays that I am handling daily. There is no way that I can work on hand taming them if there are plants and an entire scape to try to work around.
Thanks so much for sharing!
จะเป็นลม น่ากลัวมากก มาจับไปเลยหลังบ้านเยอะมาก
I love you tokays
Thank you! Me too!
Tokay tank looks good but need come see my barber 💈
Thanks! Haha almost no point friend! I'm loosing my hair slowly! Time to just shave it off!
@@Reptiliatus sorry to hear that , hope every well with you brother
Surprised ya didn't try to slow boil some of the stuff.
With scale I'm fairly confident it's mostly on the plants and not the decor. I've also never had scale attack Pothos which is why I was so relaxed about that but you are absolutely right had I been using any other type of plant!
omg they live in my house too lolz,im from south east asia, tokek is common inside the house ,wild not pet lolz
haha too cool!
Can't the bugs be in the cork background?
To be honest, yes they probably can but that’s also why I only used pothos 😅
What are the dimensions of the terrarium?
24x18x36” :)
I literally just upgraded my baby Brown anole lizard's into a 2.6 gallon NANo Tall Rimless aquarium
Awesome!
