Updating my WORKSTATION! F in the Chat for my Threadripper :(

- So last week my beloved Threadripper workstation died suddenly, after 5 years in service. No idea what happened to cause this, but it's not coming back and it's too hard to get a replacement TR4 board. So, it's time to upgrade.
I've decided due to budget limits to build a relatively average AMD AM5 system, which should have a good upgrade path and enough performance for now. The Ryzen 7600 should be less powerful than the outgoing Threadripper, but at much higher per-core performance, which isn't particularly helpful for rendering but is good for a lot of other day to day computing activities.
Thank you to all who donated to the cause on Ko-Fi, hopefully you can see that I've already put your donation to good use. I'll keep the Ko-Fi open going forward, and update the goals as I have new projects come up. ko-fi.com/apalrd
As always, feel free to chat with me on Discord and in the comments below to let me know what you think! / discord - Наука та технологія
Sorry for your loss.
Sorry to hear about your loss.
I've LOVE to watch a video of you going through how you set up your VR gaming system.
I've been asked to put one together and I have no idea how to get it set up and running.
Love your content. It’s really well presented and has helped my understanding.
I’d quite happily donate on a regular basis. How about a donation per video model? That way you dont feel commited to put out videos when you dont have time.
RIP puter. Happy birthday new puter!!! Thanks for the video, awesome as always
F - I just went to my X399 and held it lovingly
Yay! All up and running is good! And props for pronouncing my name quite well, umlauts are not for the faint of hearts!
Thanks! Names are always a struggle to get right
My condolences....F
The old King is Dead, long live the king. ❤ Also F
RIP Threadripper
Oh cool! I know that Microcenter well!
That keyboard on your desk is so cool looking, do you have any info or videos about what it is and what's is built from ?
It’s this one, an ibm model M replica with buckling spring switches. www.pckeyboard.com/page/category/SpacesaverM
@@apalrdsadventuresah very nice. I still use a original 24 function key IBM Model F keyboard. Didn’t recognize a model M in that color scheme.
I see they have a replica of the F I have in the non-IBM colors called the PC 122
One thing I totally recommend is getting a used Dell Optiplex or a Lenovo workstation.
You can usually pick them up at many PC surplus or recycle places for close to nothing and they make for excellent redundant machines for situations like this...
I still rock an Optiplex 7010, a Precision T3600 and a Lenovo P500 workstation...
Agree, I saved 3 Optiplex 9010's from becoming waste, they're fine little backup/server/media computers.
Sometimes the adventure is a misadventure. F for your loss.
But I'm surprised you didnt go ultra cheap Ryzen 5xxx as to reuse your RAM.
A ~5800 isn't *that* much cheaper than a 7600, and I can use the RAM in the cluster builds which will definitely be based on used hardware.
How about getting the board repaired? Northridge fix he's awesome
Thx supporters
I'd be tempted to track down a replacement board and revive the Threadripper if possible.... Even if you use it as a slave-processing box to power up and chomp on big things in the background, I've tasked some old boxes for this (they're only powered on when in use) and it's great, my primary rig doesn't have to cope with the job as the other machine's doing it. I really find this is an underused architecture especially in home lab settings; for me it's on VERY infrequently so power consumption overhead is almost nothing in a practical sense.
@apalrd's adventures : were you ever able to get solve the dreaded Event 56 (ACPI 15) crash errors ? (if yes: please explain in detail how)
If no : how often did it crash ?
I never had Event 56 errors on Windows 10, and it never crashed except with some early 5700XT graphics driver versions.
Two things not fair in this world...
No Micro Center in the UK. And the cost of electricity is a million pounds per KWh.
Are there any equivalent computer stores in the UK? Micro Center is all we have left, we used to have more good ones.
Yeah there are a couple, but not really on the same level. The only main one I can think of is Scan Computers, which is a few hours drive away.
Like many things, perhaps it will go full circle at some point and people will start buying things in-store again.
There aren't many Microcenters in the US either. Best Buy still sells whole computers, and they are all over, and maybe they will have extremely basic parts but not enough to build a system.
get a usb 2.5gbe usb adapter and do bonded 2.5 for a cheap speed bump - you will be able to upgrade to 7900x for 400 bucks which should be almost 2x as fast as the 1950x plus you have an upgrade path to zen5 as well - you lack so much pci lanes but hey if you really need them then you can save up for a epyc sp3 board. please do try to do cluster at some point too - dual port 40g cards are like 40 bucks - no switch needed
Windows .... really sucks at bonding, but even then, LACP will split traffic by IP hash so file copies and editing between two single machines won't make use of both sides of the bond.
I second that. Spent way too long trying to get bonded links to play nice with Windows. Don't think SMB 3.0 Multichannel even works properly anymore unless you have server edition.
Shame, because 2.5G kit is now pretty cheap.
@@marc3793 it works fine in linux so at least his vms could utilize it - going to 40g would help out his cluster plans immensely and it is cheap and reliable with dac cables - you are talking 8x speed of 2.5 bonded or bridged links - networking speed is really the weak link and bottleneck in most lans particularly for smb where it is a great opp for tech consultants since tco is low and roi is high plus upgrade path to 100g is there too #link agg #lagg
Bonding is great for trunking between switches/routers where you're aggregating traffic to and from many hosts, but most load balancing is routed by IP hash so you won't go any faster communicating from a single workstation to a single server. Obligatory car analogy: a two-lane highway doesn't mean your car goes twice as fast, it means you can have twice as many cars rolling through it (until they hit traffic at the exits).
I recommend Sergei Strelec's bootable ISO, it would have automatically booted you windows, and if you boot into their window environment you have a ton of tools to edit uefi settings.
wow I didn't realise you guys still have physical PC hardware shops over there
There are very few, Microcenter only has 26 stores in the US and this is the only one in Michigan. But it has a ton of pc parts.
@@apalrdsadventures
Microcenter is AWESOME!
I go to that Microcenter from time to time.
F Threadripper. some KO-FI help.
Thanks!
How did you get 5 gigabits with 2 twisted pairs (cat 5)??? I didn't even know that 1 gigabit was possible with 2 twisted pairs
Cat5 is still 4 pairs and is within spec for Gigabit. It’s just not good enough for 10G.

I HATE all the new BIOS Menus. Nothing is where it should be, give me the old school basic blue BIOS please.
The graphical design isn't a big issue, but the menu layout is just so bad. Both of the other systems I use the uefi in somewhat regularly (the outgoing Threadripper, and the 3400G APU) have a really nice hierarchical design for the settings that's easy to navigate and find everything.
Merci !
Thanks!
A motherboard that wont boot Windows is not an issue, it's a feature.
Any warranty on the motherboard?
It’s 5 years old at this point unfortunately
F since you asked for it...
like i said in another video. i donate all sorts of microcontrollers and meters, motors, soldering stations and the like to kids who are into electronics or cs but cant afford to have the stuff at home to learn with. i even have over 100k leds of every type you can imagine. if you have a kid on your team that would appreciate a home lab i can make it happen. if you have a kid that would benefit from it that is. id send a few packages to your po box. im not some weirdo, it's just something i do. my name never needs to be mentioned. i can even send spare servo and nema motors as well. shipping to us from canada is pretty cheap. i've mentioned it twice, throw me an email if interested and we'll see what's needed and if i can help. i dont want to help any kids with rich parents and they have to want it. if the kid is a hardware nerd i could include some professional test gear. peace. or i can send money if it's a membership thing. i have a bunch of mcu's as well. i live in a place where no one is into engineering so i keep acquiring stuff that half never gets used.

Maybe you should look at Xeon W.
Xeon Scalable is the way to go. You can combine up to 8 in a server. Most companies choose the Xeon Platinum 8490H processor. Other options for real powerful processors are the IBM Power or the Ampere Altra Max. But if you’re stuck to windows the Xeon Platinum is the better choice. All other OS’ses will fare better on IBM Power or Ampere Altra Max.
Xeon is also cheap compared to IBM Power. And Ampere can be cheaper when you buy multiple systems at once.
TLDR windows sucks
