Over 5 years ago, Seth got this run, proving that credits warp did indeed exist on console. And now, 5 years later, he just reclaimed the world record with over 5 minutes cut from this time. I'm glad to have been watching his stream for both of the runs :)
6 minutes later... Bowser: Muhahaha! Mario will never get here! He is probably still in World 1! In the mean time, let's have some fun, Princess... Wait, where did you go?

If you guys only watch him for his Minecraft content, then only watch him for his Minecraft content and don't watch these videos or streams. There is no reason to unsubscribe, and yell at him in the comments. I understand you being worried that he may be finished with Minecraft, as he hasn't posted a Minecraft video in almost a month, but.. chill out. If that is how they spelled those comments then they were satirizing the people who say that in earnest which would be the minority of the "no minecraft? unsubbed" people.
Bowser views Mario from afar messing around in the first stage, watching curiously from his castle. "...What the hell is he doing?" He wonders. After watching him throw around P blocks and spin jumping on very carefully placed shells, he feels a strange and horrible sensation. "Wh- What. WHAT. NO!" his entire soul and body is suddenly ripped from reality as the world around him and his very being fades away into oblivion. Mario closes his eyes slowly, and as he opens them, he is surrounded by friends. "It'sa me. God."
The guy didn't "figure it out". He analyzed the game code extensively and took note of everything that had to be in place for it to work, and then analyzed even more to figure a way to put those things in place while in the game. It is really insane
it sounded like one of those joke posts like -alright first you have to spin on top of this statue for 4 minutes and 26 seconds (must be exact) -then you must go outside and stare at the sun for 30 seconds -You have to ump onto this thing right here and punch this thing -and you're done!
One time I convinced my nephew that in order to do a COD Zombies easter egg you just had to knife this wall for 8 minutes and 12 seconds then go prone just so I could go outside and smoke a bowl.
Let's try and analogise this to make sense to the ignorance in these comments. You can't ride a motorcycle in a 100m sprint and call it a record, similarly you can't glitch through SMW in 6 minutes and call it a 100% run. You COULD however ride a motorcycle in a motorcycle race that spans 100m and it would be way faster, similarly you can glitch through SMW in 6 minutes and call it an any% run. That is the difference, and that is why everyone who understands speedruns thinks you're an idiot for comparing any% runs to a "legit playthrough", however vague and loose that term is.
I have to thank you Seth for bringing speedrunning to my attention. The passion that you and others put into running games is awesome to watch. Congrats man!
Seth your speedruns kinda popped up out of the blue, and you have been steadily improving ever since. I never would have thought that, after watching your first 5 speedruns, you would one day (and so soon too!) be completing the any% WR! Congrats and I must say you are an inspiration for those seeking to overcome personal obstacles
There's a lot of reprograming that's possible. It just depends on what you want to do feasibly. For instance, in a TAS it is possible (and has been done) to reprogram the entire game to be the original super Mario bros.
Wow Seth! I have watched you do speed runs of this game so many times but this is awesome. Well done. I noticed this when I was on Facebook and the trending tab was on the side. That's crazy.
Are you going to create a TAS of the glitch? Like your TAS for the normal strat, it'd be interesting to know what the lower bound is for what's humanly possible.
He said during his last stream that he wouldn't. His reason being that he expects new strats to be found by others soon, meaning the TAS would get outdone fairly quickly.
It wouldn't been possible without an emulator and the code of the game. It probably started with somebody manually moving the code around in order to launch the credits and then asking "how can we achieve this by moving code using in-game inputs?" and then they painstakingly thought about ways in which you could do that with the vanilla game. This guy could only do it on the console because he could just mimic the guy who invented it on an emulator.
This is absolutely the most fascinating thing I've seen in a while. You have a completely different appreciation for this if you write or reverse engineer software.
Big congrats to you Seth. Wish I could have been there to see both you and chat explode when you got there. Keep up the speedruns; you're doing amazing. :D
How did such an obvious glitch get past testing?~ xD Seriously tho. Pretty crazy that something like this is possible. I can't even pull off the item swappin at the end without save states.
When i played minecraft ages ago i used to watch your stuff, but i had no idea you were a speedrunner now! Great job, even just this year so much was figured out in smw. we went from the green orb to skip lemy strat, to the strats used at adgq and now hopefully this becomes the norm :D
Congrats Seth! I watched a lot of your livestreams for this but my internet was being a dick yesterday and I could only watch upto 151 or thereabouts. I'm glad you eventually got the glitch but also bemused that it was so soon after I left.
yes glitchless. there is a category for whatever you want there to be one for because there isnt a big governing body deciding what does and doesnt count, there is just small groups of people who speedrun the game and decide what they want to play in it, if one of them wants to play something differently then they just go play however they want and call it a category if more people decide to run it as well
Juggle your categories around if you want, but overall "Speedrun = Get to the end of the game in the fastest time possible." How hard is that to understand?
Wow, this is quite insane in tricking the game into loading the credits. I do remember seeing a video on SMW essentially loading a program via button inputs, and this new glitch does a similar thing but with items in the level. Anyway, impressive work on achieving the run and having an ingenious solution to get a very fast game completion time.
This is like if you're running a marathon and throw your water cups down in an arcane spatio-temporal pattern that interacts at the Planck scale to rip open a wormhole straight to the finish line. Where's the skill in that???

Newsflash: men like games and challenges and competing with others for best times, I thought this would be obvious, but I guess many people are just too retarded to understand pretty much anything
Think about games like Dota and LoL, there's 1 map and you do the same thing again and againt, yet those are 2 of the most popular games ever. People like to be good at what they do especially when there's little detail they can go into and find more about.
SuperDubCraft But there is a difference, because it Dota and LoL, there are dozens of heroes to pick from and different strategies to try. In speedruns, you can only do the fastest version of a run to even get close to a WR. Or you can study the code for hours on end...
This isn't really fair play though. I mean, the guy who beat Mario 3 in 11 minutes did so without any cheating or glitches... That was talent. This is just exploitation.
As if beating a game without glitches in a fast time is more or less impressive than having the intellectual capability to understand the programming of a game perfectly enough to manipulate the code without even hacking.
Unless there's a different run besides the epic one that's been making the rounds for damn near 10 years, that particular SMB3 was in fact a tool assisted run.
Jesus, dude. I've watched you for years. I'm so happy for you that this is showing up everywhere and getting so popular! You completely deserve this attention.
WTF? Seriously? I think glitches are cool and think they're ok in actual speed runs even, but this no way counts as a speed run. You didn't beat the game, you triggered the credits for god's sakes and that's it. There are games I can go into a menu and hit credits to view credits, does that mean I beat the game? Hell no.
metal079 That's a really stupid way to judge a speed run. Like I said many games let you see the credits without doing anything, that doesn't mean I beat the game. There should be something more legit like beating the final boss or something.
This sort of stuff just completely blows me away. I have no idea how people find this stuff :S
Well done just made the game pointless now you don't even have to compleat 1 lvl to win
R Callier This glitch looks and sounds way more difficult to pull off than actually beating the game properly.

Wonder how many new categories are going to appear if different "reprograms" are found
At AGDQ they reprogrammed it just using the controller to play the original mario

man I played this game wayy back in the mid 90s I think on the SNES and I'm blown away about this glitch. :O
***** You say that like instead of asking questions I made statemenets.
***** Am I supposed to care how long any particular person has invested in a game?
***** I really, really don't care.
Hell no.
but can you go into a menu and hit credits to view credits on super mario world? no, because it only shows at the ending.
metal079 That's a really stupid way to judge a speed run. Like I said many games let you see the credits without doing anything, that doesn't mean I beat the game. There should be something more legit like beating the final boss or something.
iDX1701 DO YOU KNOW WHAT ANY% IS?
***** No, I have a life.
iDX1701 it means get to the credits as fast as possible by any means nnecessary
