Love the Opinel. Fantastic for food prep. Really, really sharp. Holds the edge for a long time. Easy to sharpen. I have one on my stove for prepping every meal. One in my lunch box as well and another in my camp cook kit. Highly recommend. Thin slicing. Not strong, but great as I say for food prep.
I dont mean to be so offtopic but does anyone know a method to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
Same way you sew with the awl on a pocketknife. Very handy skill to learn. The Opinel is the only knife that is carried by royalty and by peasant on a daily basis. It's a great knife. I think the best information on this knife s found on the Opinel website. Opinels come in high carbon or in stainless. Yes, it's a utility knife, but so is any good bushcraft knife. The whole point of a bushcraft knife is to be a utility knife, rather than a specialist knife good only for one thing. Number 8 is far and away the most popular, but these things get about as big as you could want. If there's a "problem" with an Opinel it's that they come with a convex grind, which can be tough to sharpen in the woods. The tinder grinder works a lot better if you put the base down on a solid surface, and, for me, cut on the down stroke. The sharpener works very, very well for axes, hatchets, and tomahawks, but I'm darned if I want to carry it in my back pocket. And I would sharpen a regular knife with it. Unlike with an axe blade of any kind, you can destroy the blade geometry of a knife easily with a puck. It's fine for a machete, but keep it away from ordinary knife blades.
Great video and review. BattlBox did a really good job this month. I really like both knives, the stitcher, fire starting kit and the dead fall trap. Thanks for sharing sir.
I guess my only minor complaint is that you get a "welcome box" if you're a first time subscriber. So I first subscribed when you showed it off in October. My first order being after their cutoff date(15th) I got my welcome box instead of November's. This November box seems pretty great too and I loved the contents of the welcome box. I'm just saying this so others have a better idea that the cutoff date for each box is the 15th. They bill on the 15th and ship around the 7th. From what I've experienced. I understand why they do it they just don't make it abundantly clear on your first order. Neither did Sootch in his first video on battlbox.
The knife blank is a great chance to put some fancy, but low cost scales on a knife. Forget the walnut and buy, or go find, some antler. Soapstone also makes beautiful and unique handle scales. A trip to a nice lumber store, or a few minutes on Amazon, can also show up some incredibly beautiful woods at surprisingly low cost when all you need is enough to make knife scales. Forget the walnut and use your imagination. It's the best and cheapest chance you'll have to make a one of a kind knife.
I saw Matt with his knife a long time ago, long before condor, and it's one he made and it is a modified cleaver. Hence the "eye and the lines are on all the knives/cleavers made by that company. His handle is a bit more round on his original as he uses it for drilling a lot and the tip was a bit more center line. Good overall design, simple and tough and covers a lot of different tasks without being over designed like so many blades are today.
Why did no one make a firewheel for the ferrocenium rod? If it had an attachment for that jute cord, it would be a very handy and versatile lighter right there.
Please please please use vegetable oil on your stone if you use vegetable oil you can process your meat with your sharp edge once you switch over to petroleum you will taint your meat please use vegetable oil on your stones
Mineral oil works even better. It's food safe, has a better consistency, and is used by many professional knife sharpeners. Not that it matters with an axe. It's usually best to use no oil at all with an axe, and, honestly, with a manmade stone like this, oil is pretty pointless, anyway. The stone really isn't made to use with oil or water, and it's so porous it will soak up enough oil to make carrying it a nightmare.
Thumbs up on the video. I don’t know about that magnesium you didn’t even seem to be able to light it with the match!! I hope tinder isn’t the only thing we’re proud of making here in the states still
I love Condor knives, but don't baton the Mat Graham knife. You may have no problems, but I've seen at least half a dozen of them break right where the hole in the blade is
No condor belt.loop is really a waste to buy. Quality knife and giving it a sheath where you can lose it isn't the most well thought out for me to consider the purchase now that I see the kit. And no demo on the bow drill piece isn't showing me it works
I am very upset that youtube has made targets of prepper how to and gear channels and I want to continue watching and listening . It seems not everybody is going to the same place to continue with reviews and instruction so it is nessasary to dig for where to find some of the people and places to enjoy and learn. UA-cam is very happy to lose all the people and money with the how to prepper knife and gun video channels so don't bother trying to encourage them to keep showing this kind of content becase it is a waste of energy.
On average the items in these boxes are either at market value or actually much higher. Guys, unless you are made out of money QUIT subscribing to this kind of garbage, and buy the items individually that you need. Sootch is getting compensated for this so don't take his word. Thumbs down brother, I hope you stand for the republic in a more honorable manner going forward, you disappoint me now.
that edge is terrible..just like every wonkey ass grind that condor is known for...I love slot of condors designs they are tough blades and the sheaths are great but man the come out the box about as sharp as a marble.

When you were using the puck on those axes, I heard the SpongeBob voice in my head, "5 hours later".
Lol! No kidding : )

@Anders Case Instablaster =)
I'm a fan of how you show all the items in use.

Thanks Jack! Yes, there are a lot of solid items here.
Man, another quality video. I never get tired of your work, Sootch.
tinder scraper aka cheese grater
Who knew? Lol!
You could just buy one of those tiny box graters that you get for chocolate.

It's a grate way to make tender...

I think the walnut is 'more elegant' than Antler
Opinel has about 15 different sizes. Has a spoon and fork attachment. A veg peeler. All Great for a backpack. Also a rather large saw blade.

Im really impressed I would have liked every single item in this particular box
Sootch, can you do a video on knife maintenance? Fixed blade and folding.
Please please please use vegetable oil on your stone if you use vegetable oil you can process your meat with your sharp edge once you switch over to petroleum you will taint your meat please use vegetable oil on your stones
Excellent point! Thanks for the comment Kevin
Kevin Romas
Water and Borax also works.
Lol, since you begged...

The warm blood of your victim's work's well too
Nice job Sootch, keep up the great vids and content 👍
Hi Don, Thanks for another really good gear review video. Just wanted to send Best Wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Do you think you could get a paracord handle to work on the blade blank?
Probably
Me gusta ver los cuchillos de El Salvador en este canal 👍👍🇸🇻🇸🇻
They could have easily put a lighter in that fire kit
where do you get the waterproof pods with screw caps on top and bottom
Thumbs up on the video. I don’t know about that magnesium you didn’t even seem to be able to light it with the match!! I hope tinder isn’t the only thing we’re proud of making here in the states still
I didn't know that readyman makes cheese graters, that is awesome.
6:09 thats what she said

Speedy Stitcher for Emergency Wound Fixing? Think you can Really Sew yourself up Properly with that thing?
WakeUpUniverse danm! ouch some whiskey would help.
WakeUpUniverse )

Cool stuff. Thank you.
Thanks Jim!
That Condor knife, shaving that branch was way too close to Mr. Johnson...
Good gear review.
Thanks Brother!
bc canada, there is always tinder from under big rotten trees or cedar windfall
I too prefer your look without 'stash but since no one asked me...
Am I the only one that is seeing this and thinking. That's not a knife. This is a knife.
This is a good box of gear
Fala amigo.
Vídeo muito bom e um excelente Kit fogo. Abraço! Rio de Janeiro Brazil
Ready man Tinder scraper? Looks like a cheese greater you get from the dollar store! Thanks for the video
cool stuff - thanks for sharing :)
Opinel are good knives. Many uses.
Awesome stuff Sootch00 []====[]::::::::::::::::::::> Keep up the good work. Always long live the republic
Thanks Jerry! You're the man! Long Live the Republic!
Come on!! Lol you've gotta demo. The bow drill
The big knife reminds me of the WWII ?smatchet?.
First thing I thought when I saw it was that it was a singled edged Smachet with slightly less steel.
Wow, was that Chevy Chase at the end? Or are you practicing your gray man skills?
You forgot to put a link to Walter Sorells here.
Much cooler looking without handlebar stache. lol
No condor belt.loop is really a waste to buy. Quality knife and giving it a sheath where you can lose it isn't the most well thought out for me to consider the purchase now that I see the kit. And no demo on the bow drill piece isn't showing me it works
Love it
Was that Sootch00 twin brother Mootch02 at the end of the video. LOL
Very cool but no belt loops on that beautiful leather sheath, seriously?
Its pronounced Opi - neal grew up in Europe on many bases French is one of the languages I speak lol.
Tell me I didn't just see you light your tinder with a bic lighter?
Wth?!, just got this notification today @ 9 40, 3 days late.
