LoreWarrior Online - The Gurkha

- The Gurkha is another Word of Blake machine built to keep the factories on Terra going and to augment lances with some serious coordination capabilities thanks to it's C3i system. The downside of this is that Gurkha's became priority targets and many pilots died quickly when hit by overwhelming fire.
As a trivia nerd, I feel obligated to point out that the recognizable "Ghurka knife" is called a kukri. It's a big knife notable for a sharp forward curve along its bladed edge of around 45-60 degrees. The blade being on the inside of the curve makes it particularly well suited for chopping off hands and such with hatchet-like slashes, among other uses at which Ghurka s tend to be well practiced.
Just sucks the 'mech doesn't have the iconic knife.
"Welcome to the WoB Militia, here's your dress Broadsword."
"You mean a shortsword? Or a longsword?"
"No"
"Hey Bob. Client came back with some notes about the new design."
"Oh? What'd they have to say, Ted?"
"Well... They don't like the smokestacks."
"What?! It's the best part of the design!"
"I know, Bob, but... It is a bit silly."
"It's not! It's intimidating! It's one thing to have a sword-swinging mech charging you, but one belching smoke as well? That's terrifying!"
"I'm sorry, Bob, but I'm with the client on this one. A six ton coal engine purely to create smoke just isn't practical. And don't even get me started on the local environmentalists."
"Okay, Ted, what if we scaled it back to a two ton ICE that ran dirty?"
"I'll pitch it to the client. Not sure if they'll go for it though."
"Please do. I'll redo the schematics, *I guess."*
"Is this something you want to talk about, Bob?"
"... A dude on a bike cut me off on the 110 yesterday."
"Oh..."
"He even had a 'vegan cyclist' shirt on."
*"Ohhhh.* That makes more sense now."
Hello CR.
I don't 'hate' the Gurkha Mech. I can see what the Wobbies were trying to do, but you really need Clan Tech to make it work. I used MegaMekLab and specified mixed IS-Clan Technologies. The C3i and TSM was kept, while other things were changed or replaced entirely.
Clan Endo is used instead of IS Endo. Keeping the Retractable Blade and C3i system and the 3 ER Medium Lasers, I upgraded the Engine to a Clan tech XL. The heat sinks were also upgraded to Clan DSHS and an 11th one was installed onto the Mech. A 4th ER Medium Laser was added, All four of which were upgraded to Clan Tech ER Medium Lasers.
Six standard jump jets give the Mech the mobility it lacked in rough terrain. Unfortunately, a half ton of standard armor was skimmed from the design to keep it under the 35-ton limit, leaving a total of 7 tons of standard armor plating.
The four Clan ER Mediums allow the Mech to 'run and gun' and remain cool, and fire out to an additional 25% of range over the IS versions. The Jump Jets add mobility the design sorely lacked. The TSM and Retractable Blade make CQB dangerous for the Mech's opponents, in addition to the ER Medium's lack of a minimum range.
Now, if you have been following closely, you will see there is tonnage 'left over' as well as a few critical slots. So, I decided to give the Mech some missile defense. TWO Clan AMS systems, and a full ton of reloads. Although the rate of fire puts the 'number of shots' down to IS AMS standards, having two such systems allows the Mech to be twice as effective in knocking down incoming missile barrages. A trade off that I felt was more than justified.
Yes, I know this pretty much looks like Min-Maxing, but I wanted to see what one could do with the design if someone applied (mostly) Clan tech to the design. I realize that the Mech no longer has any 'long ranged' firepower, but the speed and added mobility, along with the missile protection, should enable the Mech to close upon its target without too many issues.
I could argue that half of the four ER Mediums should be moved to the torsos to reduce the likelihood of losing all the energy weapons by losing the left arm, but I thought that keeping the Mech's external 'look' was important. Although, on that front, I think Baron or one of the other good Battletech artists could to a far better job of artwork for this Mech.
That is some serious heat management
With a Mech designed to close, I'd like the Pulse Laser better than the PPC.
Edit: When it comes to melee, I just want a Kodiak with working claws.
I, too, want the Kodiak claws to work right.
The ‘smoke stacks’ on its back were the first thing that hit me. That is properly odd 😂
Check out the Blakists' Grand Crusader. It's properly Steampunk.
"Throw more sinners into the furnace adepts! My machine grows sluggish!"
Hate melee weapons, but I get where you're coming from the exceptions for the Hatchet/Axeman. I feel the same way about quads. Kinda love the Scorpion and Goliath, hate all other quads. They were there first and were the oddball designs that were abandoned for future R&D.
This mech seems ideally suited for missions you won't return from.
I love the pause before you say..................................word of blake
6:30 The mech bow. Aka ArrowV!!😂
Idk if you have seen Simon whistler Stream b4. But you two have the sam3 vibe. It's funny fr..
*Sigh* of course, the Word of Blake
You are truly our spirit animal when dealing with the Blakist nonsense
A sword on a 35-tonner is a butter knife. If the Wobblies had stolen TSM it would be tasty.
You can imagine the *ting* sound it would make when they hit a bigger 'mech with it haha
Probably the heat sink vents
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRREEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hate the fact that it is WoB, the desin is not bad. If its going to be a melee H/K type mech.. try this... Reshape the Sword to a Kukri , remove the C3i, add TSM and 5 JJ... (may swap the ERPPC out for the LPL, definitely if i was in the time of the ERLPL [+ 2 more JJ OR tag / AP / ECM]) keep everything else... I think it would be seriously fun..
Yes, the proliferation of melee weapons is excessive, but with the passage of In Universe time - there is at least a reasoning for it - Hatchetman/Axman worked well and clanners hate melee. So in universe i get it. a lot of the designs look to much like power armor with a sword over full mechs. I prefer mechs having build in melee - Claws or 'ax' fore arm over a sword - the above example of a Kukri would still appear more rugged and hatchet like. Big flashy swords are way to anime for my battletech table.
I hate to say it this way.. i kinda like the mech, but.. agreed on the melee weapons part.
Hatchet/axe makes sense, a sword does not. A Mace of some sort does make sense. If the weapons were hatchet or axe and mace like things, it would make way more sense in the setting than a sword.
The whinging about the WoB "receiving special treatment because they're the bad guys" is a little grating at this point. I don't hear any complaints about Clan tech being overpowered bullshit to make the bad guys threatening.
Fair enough. The WoB is just bad writing to make a villain group that just appear. I get FASA wanted a new threat for the setting but the way they handled the group and how it was subsequently handled by the owners afterwards made them pretty bad. I suppose for me it's just sad that a well written universe like Battletech has this hideous speed bump like this. The clans are interesting writing wise but bad gameplay wise but that is beside the lore so I don't have as many complaints. The Blake boys are entirely built around the writing and because it is so poor it just becomes annoying, especially when they have some pretty good designs specific to them.
That said I get it and I will be mindful of such in future recordings.
Beam saber? Stupid? Considering battletech origins cribbing from Japan on several fronts and then everyone swearing it never happened, i can't wait for a beam saber to show up. Nine hells we already got the freaking Zaku in the game.
It would be interesting to see them run the beam saber idea within the settings rules and how they would try to balance a laser sword for Battletech.
Yeah I love the name, and the mech kind of lives up to it.
And I mostly like the art too. But the sword looks wildly out of place (like pretty much all swords on mechs). Put that next to the name, and it doesn't fit.
If it looks like a Kukri knife it would have made more sense.
1st comment!!...
Woo Hoo!!😂
