Wind Copter Helicopter Kite autogyro revisited 20201025

- I have had this "Wind Copter" for several years, originally one of my charity shop finds. I have rarely managed to get a good flight with it. Today is not one of those rare occasions.
Some points before we start
1. It is very windy and VERY NOISY
2. The frame rate gives you the wrong impression of the rotor speed
3. Between each flight I adjust the anchor point or trim.
4. The kite string seems to have deteriorated over the years
5. I have only ever had a couple of good flights with this in the 5 years I have had it.
6. Check the video description for the playlist to see it flying

One of my best friends has been trying to get one of these to fly for about ten years and I have never seen it fly! Good luck if anyone buys one.
Yes, you need perfect wind conditions. This video is probably the best flight I have had with it ua-cam.com/video/50yNdmTzfvA/v-deo.html
I first watched you like 7 years ago ...when I was 12 you are amazing
Thank you, yes this channel has been running since 2013. I expect you have left school and have a job now. Good luck 👍
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan I'm continuing football as a carrier
@@_arnavmathur I hope you do well 👍
It appears that it can only take a slight amount of wind that would also balance the string, Personally speaking. Thanks for the share my friend!🖐️🤠👍
It needs a very narrow range of wind, too little and it cannot lift, too much and it distorts and loses lift. There are a couple of videos in the playlist where I got reasonable flights (and several where I didn't). The hub for the rotor has loosened over the years and moves out of position, upsetting the balance, so I need to fix that. The string has also deteriorated over the years, I thought my wife was letting more line out, but it was just stretching. Next time I take it out I will need to use different line and remember to fix that hub.
OK, I'll take a look at your videos, it was interesting to say the least.. cheers! 🤠👍
hey, thanks, I can see you have commented on several 👍
Had this when I was a kid and could never get it to fly neither could my parents😢
Haha, yes, it needs perfect conditions. As I explained at the start of the video. in the years that I have had this, I have only had one or two good flights. I put lots of other people's video in my playlist for this one and considering they probably edited their videos to show the best bits, there are very few showing a good flight 😆😆ua-cam.com/play/PLA5a2xPRSrB2cQcygJHkKaLMEmRq-CjIo.html
Looks like your rotor hub is slipping 😉.
I dont know if you can set the rotor blades so that they are slightly pointing upwards,Dihedral or if the blades do bend upwards naturally under load but that might work when you fix your line and hub.
Hi Stephen, yes that hub is slipping round. Over the years it has loosened. You might be surprised to learn that I couldn't find anything on the beach there that I could use to jam it in place. The post it sits on has a slot down the middle to allow it to compress as you slide the hub in place and I was looking for an old lolly stick or anything I could jam in there, but unusually there was nothing I could use. I even tried a bit of shell but that didn't fit. There are a couple of reasonable flight videos in the playlist, but a lots of fails too, it is very particular on wind speed.
aaah why won't it stay up
It needs perfect conditions to fly well, plus the rotor hub was slipping around. It has loosened over the years. That upsets the balance, so I need to fix that. You will find a playlist in the video description where there are several videos of this flying, only a couple of them are good flights, most of the time it is very frustrating.
It obviously needs some sort of autopilot, or blade angle control.
There is a playlist for this kite in the video description 👍 out of all the videos there is only one decent flight. The conditions need to be just right.
Try to fit the rope more close to the cg, under where the rotor is, this way the root or will stay more up and it will face the wind better👍🤘
As I explained in the text at the start, between each flight I was adjusting the trim. One problem is the rotor hub is slipping round the pivot. It should be gripped tight but over the years it has worked loose so I will need to fix that as it unbalances the whole setup when it slips round out of alignment. You will find the video description helpful.
Needs a bigger rudder surface
Maybe try mounting a string with a small puppet (tail) on the back of the rail for stabilisation.
The rotor hub has loosened over the years and slips round upsetting the balance. A tail might help as long as it does not get tangled in the rotor 👍
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan Autogyros have a very tight flight envelope anyway.
You need to find the original Gyro Kite from 1997. I got one on ebay and it flies amazing.
As far as I know, this is an original. Do you have any video of yours flying. I made this playlist of the videos I found on UA-cam, it includes several original commercials ua-cam.com/play/PLA5a2xPRSrB2cQcygJHkKaLMEmRq-CjIo.html
I had one, could never get it to fly properly then really hurt an old lady at the beach and haven't tried again since
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan No, It looks the same but there few differences. I had one just like in this video, and I still have the original from 97. Landing gear is different, rotors, dimensions in general too. Cheers
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan I will make a video next time I go to beach side, post and send you the link 🤝
@@asherael 🤣 it happens
I just broke mine in a fit of rage because I have never been able to get this piece of shit to fly. I have had it for a decade and tried a hundred times over dozens of outings. It felt so good. I have been wanting to slam this thing in the ground since the first time I couldn't get it to work
Yes, it is very frustrating. I think I have only had a couple of good flights out of it in all the time I have had it. It put together a playlist which included several of the original publicity videos, I think they were carefully edited to make it look good. In the playlist, there are people's own designs and they do fly ua-cam.com/play/PLA5a2xPRSrB2cQcygJHkKaLMEmRq-CjIo.html
@@GrandadIsAnOldMan thanks for the link
@@thekehoeshow.. you will always find I put that sort of information in my video descriptions 😁😁
Nice video and nice and windy too to fly a kite.the heli.didnt fly too well tho maybe because the Wind came from the wrong direction? Better luck next time.😀
The rotor hub was slipping around. It has loosened over the years. That upsets the balance, so I need to fix that.
Good Sunday morning to you sir
Good morning David, a fine sunny 🌞 day so far but rain expected later 😀

@@MrDbone75 brilliant and good luck 👍
how about a tandem rotor... like a Chinook...
It would be an interesting project. I did include a few videos in the associated playlist of people who had made their own from scratch but I didn't see any tandem rotor versions.
Have you ever thought to try it with two strings, maybe on the landing gear somehow?
God knows if it would help any... I certainly don't *_; )_*
You will find it flying in some of my other videos (in the associated playlist) but it needs a bit of maintenance. The rotor hub is loose so it slips around out of alignment and that upsets the balance. Also the kite line has deteriorated (as we saw it broke) so that needs replacement. I thought my wife was playing more line out, but it was just the line was stretching.
@470K - We built a 2-line modification that made it possible for a fast kid with circus-grade skills to keep it in the air for a while if it was not gusty. But the rotor itself is inherently unstable, and wants to bite the dust.
All this needs is a tail or ribbon
Small DC motor to rotor a few LEDs and walla UFO
I must admit in all the years I have been flying this, I have never tried a tail on it. The idea of a tail getting wrapped up in that rotor is not something I would look forward to, but it might make a difference. Have you ever flown one?
