Very true. It's like they had and still have some kind of magical powers. My first Tamiya build was the gSaint Dragon, which has the same chassis as the Madcap, but is very rare when compared to the Madcap. Recently dug it up again and converted it to brushless with 3100kv motor. Wheel bearings, metal motor place, oil shocks, new tires. Reinforced the shock towers where the screws mount, as they became brittle with time. I run it on 2s Lipo and it now goes 36km/h which is much faster than the original brushed motor 25km/h. Love it. On 3s it goes around 50km/h but I don't want to destroy the gears and diff. It's like we were injected with the RC virus via the Tamiya kits when we were kids, and it stayed with us all along. Sometimes the virus will go into hibernation but then it will return again unexpectedly. That's what happened to me, I'm in my mid forties now and I'm infected once again. I'm going to get me a DT-03 Racing fighter kit for Xmas, which I will build with a 3300kv brushless motor and ESC. Just finished buiding an Absima AB-3.4 buggy as well, just waiting for the motor and ESC to complete. And I love my WLToys 12428 as well, with customised body colours and many upgrades. Keep this fantastic hobby going guys, its supercool and very satisfying! This hobby keeps the kids in all of us alive :-)
My first was the Opel Calibra V6 DTM on the TA02 Chassis. I got the kit, 2 1500 NiCd stick packs a Futaba radio setup and Hobico quick charger all brand new. It was the best Christmas ever for 13 year old me. I learned so much about cars and mechanics through RC. I drove it countless miles in a figure 8 in my driveway. Wore it out and rebuilt/modified it many times over. I still have it along with many of the spare pieces. Thanks for your videos and reminding me of a wonderful childhood memory. 😁👍🏻
The Tamiya that means the most to me is the monster beetle as that’s what I got for Christmas in 1988 when I was 6 years old 😜I’ve just finished restoring it and I’ve also bought the 2015 rerelease 🤩👌
The Thundershot was my first proper "build" rc car, that I got for Christmas in 1990 when I was 10. It came from Beattie's with the black and yellow carry bag. I built it over 3 or 4 days, fueled by huge amounts of Quality Street and Cadbury's Rose's with Two Ronnie's/ MooreCombe & wise Christmas specials in the background. I had seen my cousin's marui Samurai, and I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I currently have the Terra Scorcher on pre order, with my eye on a repro thundershot shell and decals from eBay. I always wanted the dual shock front hop up, detailed in the back of the manual, and of course a fabled technigold motor
There's an man with a beard. He's an older man on the screen but i see a little kid who loves vintage RCs. Never grow up! Nice vid! Thundershot looks cool :) My first Tamiya "love" is the Monster Beetle.
My first Tamiya was an original Fire Dragon, so I could identify with this video! Bought it off the shelf in Japan when I was visiting family for a summer as a kid.
I feel you mate, My first Tamiya love was the Saint Dragon back in 1990. Still have it and now run it with a brushless system and lots of upgrades :-) Tamiya kits are like magical how they marked our lives forever!
My first tamiya was a boomerang which I loved and eventually upgraded to a technigold 8.4v system as well as gold wheels and spiked tyres. Went like the clippers! Just recently got myself a bigwig re re and have really enjoyed getting back into the hobby. Also just bought my dad a re re super clod buster which he is loving
My first Tamiya car was a Holiday Buggy, a very basic car, but I loved it. I can still remember the excitement of going to Beaties to pick it up! I soon upgraded the motor to a 540 and changed from 6v NiCad to a 7.2v “Racing Pack”. The car I first started racing with was an upgraded HotShot. The car I’ve most wanted but never owned - an Avante! The car I was most proud to own, (and still have) is an 1/8th Serpent Excel circuit car. I just loved the pure engineering perfection of this car.
First buggy, was a beat up original Tamiya Grasshopper. Paid £5 from a mate at school. Got everything apart from a battery. The only 7.2v batt I could find at home was my dads drill battery, I shoved some wires in the terminal and some electrical tape to hold it all together. Result was a top heavy, saggy suspension grasshopper, but I loved it! Went on to replace the rear wheels with Wild one rears, put a 540 silver can in it, and drive it endlessly. That’s was only the beginning of it all. Cheers keep up the good work Glenn.
I'm a new Zealander, my first car was a handed down kyosho rocky and a Tamiya thunder shot with technigold from my brother about 88,i loved the thunder shot!!
Same story, lots of talking parents into it, several visits to the toy shop and Xmas morning was 🤪😍. It was only a Grasshopper with a 380 and 6v pack but it didn’t matter. Great memories indeed! 👍
I never had a Tamiya as a kid in the 80's. My first RC was a Marui Big Bear. Later I had a Playtron Lynx, Kyosho Ultima Pro, Kyosho Raider Pro and Schumacher Procat. My first Tamiya was a rerelease Grasshopper in 2017, but I wanted several back then.
My first Rc was a Nikko 2 speed buggy back in December of 1990! My first Tamiya was a wild willy in 1993. Happy days indeed. I love the story about you and your old man going to the hobby shop to get the buggy!
In 1982/3 I remember staying at a caravan park near Herne bay, Kent. While there what seem the whole time the family staying near us had two blazing blazers, one red other black, I remember people standing around in amazement, think if left an impression on my folks as not long after I got my first Tamiya Lancia Rallye, I loved her being my first but, Luncbox, Clodbuster, then in 89 Cat xl (2nd hand) and went racing, too many happy memories. Gave it up for mountain biking because of cost, my shelf stacking after school for £1.50 per hour couldn't fund both.
Thanks for sharing the memories Glenn! Thundershot is real high up on my list of additions I want for my collection. Looking forward to seeing you transform that one into a stunner!
I love collecting Tamiya, but my first RC was a Jet Hopper first hobby grade was a Marui Hunter First Tamiya was a FAV. I have them all again as mint shelf queens and have been making up for it ever since.
Hey Glen. Cool to listen to your childhood memories with Tamiya. My dreamcar was the Hotshot, but got a Hirobo Bearcat instead. Was very disappointed, as that wasn't the thing I wanted and moreover it was only 2WD. Then I saved all my pocket money to buy the Tamiya of my choice and as you know there were so many coming out at that time, the new dreamcar of choice was the BOOMERANG!
Just stumbled over this video... Actually the 80s Thundershot was my fist one, too. Still have it and hopped it up with everything possible back in the days. Now added the Blautal RC carbon chassis - thx for the according video btw :)
Another good video, brings back many memories. I remember pestering my mum all week to take me to Beaties in Blackpool at the weekend for the first time. When we got there I was in awe of all the fantastic 1/10 models on display in the window and behind the counter. The stacks of boxes looked great too, the box Tamiya box art was one of the best things about them and those boxes seemed so much bigger back then! Keep up the good work.
My first car like you was the Thundershot I also got mine back in 1987 when I was 11 for Christmas. My dad surprised me for Christmas and I was so excited when I opened the wrapped box and saw I had a Thundershot. I crashed it when I was about 12 and damaged the front axle and never used it again. My father unfortunately passed away in January2021 and my mother recently went in her loft to clear up and she found my Thundershot ❤️❤️. I’m restoring it right now and have striped and cleaned it just awaiting a few parts, new battery and a remote control as mines missing. I also have the gold wheels all round but no black ones probably threw them out. Really liking the double suspension on the front of yours, where can I get this conversion kit from? My car holds so many fond memories for me❤️ and the great days my father and I had.
As I said Glenn those memories. That’s why I still love the hobby. And repeating my self my beloved nan got me the holiday buggy. My favourite by a mile👍👍👍👍👍👍
My first RC car kit was a Tamiya Wild Willy. Had tons of fun with that heavy beastie. I recall all the times I would accidentally burn myself on the ceramic resistor, or when the radio gear would stop communicating with the mechanical speed control pegged at full throttle and it would get lodged under the neighbors car or in a bush somewhere... and then smoke would come pouring out from under the ABS plastic body. Good times! :) I remember the local hobby shop installing a circuit breaker so that when that sort of thing would happen again it would pop the circuit before it would smoke the motor or the speed control. (And I had to reset that break quite frequently.) Looking back now, it might have been just junky early tech in the first place, or it might have been that I was just a dumb kid who didn't really know what I was doing - maybe a combination of both? - but I had *so* much fun with that kit! Hours and hours and hours and hours of poppin' wheelies, jumping curbs, bombing through my mom's garden and flower beds (for which I was scolded on many occasions), and repairing and repainting that body so often. It made me a Tamiya fanboi for life - the only other brand I ever owned was an Associated RC12L when I got into indoor carpet racing many years later. After Wild Willy, I got a Blackfoot, then one of those little 1/24th scale RC Porsche 962 cars, and then I got a Boomerang and I was forever in love with 4WD buggies. I had been out of the RC world for decades. Then I stumbled across @Tamiya Legends channel and it got me hooked again. I purchased and built a Tamiya Super Hotshot re-re just a couple of months ago and man, oh man, did it bring back so many fond memories. And driving that buggy around the backyard is just too much fun. I think I'm pretty well hooked all over again! :) Cheers!
First tamiya was a Grasshopper, but my favorite was the Nissan 300zx IMSA GTS on the TA-02W frame. I remember taking a week to paint the red, blue and white body. Had every mod tamiya had out at the time for it. Fast and handle great.
First tamiya was an og Blackfoot. Traded my bike for it! My mom wanted to strangle me for that! My first brand new was the subaru brat same as Blackfoot and then was the Hunter. Thanx for the memories!
my first Tamiya was the grasshopper back in 1986 then the following Christmas i got my hands on the hornet I couldn't believe the difference in speed because the grasshopper only has a 360 size motor. happy memories Lol . super vids Glenn by the way keep it up mate
My first Tamiya was an original Astute which I got for Christmas 1989. I still own it and still drive it which is cool. It will be getting a new body soon. My first RC, which I owned before the Astute was an MRC Road Winner. 4wd, independent suspension, 540 motor, and SLOW. 😀 Picked one up on eBay recently. Not sure yet what I'll be doing with it. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 👊
Super Champ for Christmas back in around 84-85. Honestly it was a terrible kit for a 9-10yr old, but I loved watching/helping my dad put it together and it looked so good when it was finished. The key was having someone with another car to run around with at that age to have fun.
I feel you completely my uncle had a hornet and when seen that I was hooked on rc .my first kit rc wasn’t an tamiya ,it was a Rc10t I also got it for Christmas I was so excited I remember building it in my room over a week and drove the wheels off of it. I sold it when I was 18 rc wasn’t a priority (kicked my self later in life for mistake) fortunately I found a mint one on market place for cheap built it up put brushless in it and drive it all the time. Enjoy I’m sure driving that car will bring back a ton of memories!
Great vid, my first RC was an Avante for Xmas ‘88, very lucky. The front upright bent within 30 mins. Such poor quality, no motor, no speedo but it was great fun and I loved it.
1985 shop built Brat with a 380 and Acoms techni plus MK1. Red crystal! I bought your Thundershot when you sold up. I'll be watching this video series with interest. It's not left the box since it arrived apart from a quick once over!
Hi Glenn. Loved the video. I can really relate to those memories of yours. My first real RC car was a very well used and well bashed Grasshopper I acquired in exchange for a music cassette, barely recognizable as a Grasshopper. I could just about afford to buy a couple of pots of Tamiya acrylic and a couple of paint brushes. I spent a considerable amount of time dismantling, cleaning and reconstructing and finally got round to getting a new body with decals. I was overjoyed with the end results and I'm pleased to say that I still have it. ATB Darren and Team Bates.
You should never apologise for being passionate and enthusiastic about your hobby I love people who are as enthusiastic as you are I was late to RC and my first car was a dark impact I got it as a present for my 50th birthday and I'm now obsessed with the hobby an my collection is slowly building not a classic I know but special to me life's good
My first car was a Thundershot and that’s why I’m here. I remember my parents taking me to Beaties every other week, on the build up to Xmas, so I could look at it. It came with a huge black and yellow bag to carry it around in. I havnt thought about this for ages and on reflection have no idea what happened to that car. 30+ years later and I’ve just “borrowed” a Hornet we bought my daughter for Xmas a few years back that she doesn’t use. I’ve well and truly got the bug again! Was there a vid of the rebuild for this?
Great video as ever. My first Tamiya was a monster beetle! Still very dear to me. Just getting back in to the RC world and looking to get a lunchbox. Always been a fan but yet to own one.
Love it can't wait to see you get the car in proper condition. My first Tamiya was the Grasshopper , no matter how technical the cars get the Grasshopper will always be my favorite
The lunchbox , man that be brings me back ,87' was a few years ago , and maybe I'm dating myself , but once a kid always a kid. Keep up the vids man , and if anyone has a great deal on a Top Force , let me know .
That was worth it for the decals and manual in that condition nice find. Took a while for me to get an actual Tamiya Kit my first hobby grade RC was a Futaba FX10 (rebadged Striker I still have it) from there I went to an Associated RC10L fiberglass kit followed by a Losi JRx2 it wasn’t until the whole touring car scene took off that I got my first actual Tamiya Kit a FF01 Castrol Honda Civic (I still have this and the original body too) I’ve had a few other Tamiya Kits since then all mostly on road. Currently among my other brand RC’s for my Tamiya lineup I’ve got that original FF01, TLT1, F104 Pro, TRF FF03R (occasionally race those last two) I just picked up a TA02W that I’m currently resto-modding (favorite ATM)
Hi Glenn my first and therefore most special was a mario shogun when I was about 11. Wish I still had it and would give anything for another. After that I had 2 Ultimas. My first tamiya was a Williams Renault F1 which you have featured. I didn't get into buggies until the re res with a grasshopper. Me and my lad now have about 30 cars 😊.
My first RC car was a second hand Tamiya Fast Attack Vehicle and my first brand new car was the Tamiya Fire Dragon and i put the Tamiya Dyna Tech 02 in it , it was a great car , good time buddy . All the best mate ........................
My first was a Hornet with a CRP truck body mount kit running a Ford Ranger body. I'm still working on re-creating it with a Blackfoot body... However I do have a Thundershot running Brushless and 3S! It's proving tricky to keep in one piece! Looking forward to the rest of this series...
Awesome car the thunder shot. My first was the super sabre. My mate had the thunder shot. I now have both originals in mint condition. Unfortunately had to use tbg shells though.
Believe it or not, as a kid I never owned a Tamiya. Two Kyosho’s and an RC10. Actually my first was a Kyosho Raider ARR which i have since acquired a NIB one. Love reminiscing... Glad you were able to obtain your first childhood RC. Keep up with the great work buddy.
My first RC car was a Hornet that I bought used, I was 16/17. Came complete in a plastic bag but all disassembled with a photocopy of the instruction manual, cost me 80 bucks. My mother said I wasted my money but I had it all back together and running the next day.
First Tamiya was a Baja champ that was purchased at a yard sale for 35 cdn dollars complete and rtr Next was a Brand new grasshopper my neghbour gave me partially assembled. Still have both and still love them.
I was born in '87 so missed the big 80's r/c craze but my older brother had a Hornet which I loved, unfortunately he never let me have a go until the battery was dead but he did buy me a Tamiya guide book (from modelsport) which I literally spent hours reading cover to cover. After having loads of toy grade r/c's I eventually got my first Tamiya kit when I was 12 which was the Golf V5 FF01, a bit of a boring choice for a kid but I loved VW's and have grown up to own many real ones so it was kind of fitting in the end. My favourite car however was the Top Force Evo which I saw in the Tamiya guide book, it was no longer available by the time I was old enough to afford one but I have managed to get hold of a couple of originals since then and currently have an Evo spec re-re top force runner which is great. By the way I live 10 minutes from Modelsport in Otley and you may already know they have moved premises now to a much bigger shop, it's really nice inside but I do miss the days when you could walk in and be surrounded by boxes and kits on display, they have some old photos of the store on there instagram if you haven't seen them already.
My first tamiya rc was a ford ranger when I was around 8 years old, I had no experience smashed it into a curb broke it then my dad give it to my grandad. Then he took me to Bolton model mart and got me a lunchbox which he painted as the A Team van.
Great memories buddy and when I was 10 or 11 years old I couldn't afford Tamiya or kyosho as the dealer was King Of Toys and they were rip offs as my first RC car was Playtron Doberman and second was Marui Big Bear.
First tamiya was a 2nd hand Striker, raced this till destruction at Tansley Off Road Club ,didn't win any trophies with it :( but then I got a brand new thunder shot :) I put a Team Tanaplan motor in it with twin shocks and the huge wing .I then won the most improved driver in 1988 :) all funded by my paper round lol.
Thanks for sharing those great memories Glenn! My first Tamiya was a original Blackfoot which I got for Christmas as well. Just finishing up doing a resto/mod on another original Blackfoot this one has the MIP diff and brushless and a lot of aluminum bits..lol Looking forward to seeing you restore your first Tamiya my friend :)
Love the vids Glenn! Otley Modelsport is a great website, one where I'm always eyeing what my next purchase may be. First (and only) car is my brushed Stadium Thunder. 39 yoa and my wife bought it for me last Christmas from Modelsport! A rich kid on my road as a kid had a Stadium Blitzer and never let me have a go. 25 years on and I got my own! Always remembered watching it overtake real cars on the road! Also remember seeing the Bigwig as a kid so tempted to get either that or a Hornet as my next purchase. Really drawn to the Dark Impact with a sport tuned motor though. What would you recommend? Fancy a bit more of a challenge after really enjoying building the Stadium Thunder.
Eug Vic Thanks man 👊🏻 I’m not sure I can help as I like them all 😂👊🏻 I have just finished the videos on the DF-03 White Impact which I really liked 🚗💨💨
Absolutely superb channel. Looking forward to the Thundershot restoration as it also holds some great memories for me too. If I had to pick one special Tamiya it would be the original Rough Rider. But I also have wonderful memories and affection for the Blackfoot & Thundershot. Please keep up the brilliant content.
For me it’s the fox I remember how much I wanted one of these as a kid the local toyshop had one built on display unfortunately I never owned any tamiya Rc cars until about 5 years ago I now have 8 including 2 foxes, keep up the great work mate love this channel
The Falcon but it's not the one I loved the most, that was Terra Scorcher which I see you did up. That car was a beast before I moved onto a Kyosho Lazer ZX-Sport.
Thanks guys for all your amazing comments, they’ve been an absolute pleasure to read 😍👊🏻
TAMIYA Legends my first car that started it all was a Rising Storm still looking for a body
I guess I'm quite off topic but do anybody know a good website to stream newly released tv shows online?
I love to hear everyone's stories and it's amazing just how much these kits have touched our childhood.

My first was a Lunchbox that I purchased in Springfield Missouri during thanksgiving time while visiting my grandparents, the year was 1987
My first Tamiya was a Bear Hawk, loved it. Ran it into the ground. Would love an original as a shelf queen.

My first Tamiya RC car was the Thundershot's sister car. The Thunder Dragon. Pretty much the same as the Thundershot apart from the body shell.
In 1982/3 I remember staying at a caravan park near Herne bay, Kent. Looking back now, it might have been just junky early tech in the first place, or it might have been that I was just a dumb kid who didn't really know what I was doing - maybe a combination of both? :) Cheers!

That’s awesome my friend 😊👊🏻
First tamiya was a Grasshopper, but my favorite was the Nissan 300zx IMSA GTS on the TA-02W frame. I remember taking a week to paint the red, blue and white body. Had every mod tamiya had out at the time for it. Fast and handle great.
Great story, can't wait to see the update. Frog is my first and still my favourite. Luckily I still have it today.
Michael DiBlasi
Love it 😍
Thanks for watching buddy 👊🏻
Hi Glen, my first Tamiya was the Terra Scorcher which I still have today and recently restored it.
Great vid, my first RC was an Avante for Xmas ‘88, very lucky. The front upright bent within 30 mins. Such poor quality, no motor, no speedo but it was great fun and I loved it.
Had one of these ,one of my favourites it was .
My first RC Tamiya back then was the Hornet, I loved that car.
1985 shop built Brat with a 380 and Acoms techni plus MK1. Red crystal!
I bought your Thundershot when you sold up. I'll be watching this video series with interest. It's not left the box since it arrived apart from a quick once over!
erolbrown
Oh wow buddy that’s so cool 😎
Andy J
Hey Andy 👋🏻
I’ve actually not started the restoration yet lol 😂
I’ll be definitely starting it in the next 2-3 weeks 👊🏻
Tamiya Boomerang was where it all started for me.
My First tamiya was a TA01 Mercedes Benz 190E Evo ii. What a job I had putting all those Decals on!
irvine40
Oh wow 😮 yes I can imagine those decals to be a bit of a handful! But what a stunning looking car when it’s done 😊👊🏻
my favourite and 1st hobby grade RC was the original Hornet so much so that I bought another one when the ReRe became available.
Awsome, the thundershot rocks. my 1st Tamiya was the Falcon.
First car for me was a wild one.
Cool find and the decals that's was incredible.
😁Nice story about your first kit. mine was the hornet.
Brilliant mate I can remember getting a tamiya grasshopper for Christmas I’ve still got her to day with the original msc still works to this day
That was worth it for the decals and manual in that condition nice find.
You never forget your best times 👍🏻
King cab was my first for chrimbo and my sister got a lunchbox that year
Much fun was had with them haha
Super sabre, was very nearly the monster beetle.. Love the thundershot, I really must get one
My first was the Fav. Had to do a tiger paint job as its the only paints I had lol. Managed to swap it for a bigwig. That was awesome.
Falcon was my first. I still have it. Waiting patiently to be restored.
1987 midnight pumpkin loved it had a repo for xmass happy memories love the channel
I've been looking forward to this since seeing your earlier mini review from a few years ago.
My first Tamiya car was the Madcap, i then bought a second hand schumacher cougar 2 😊
My first one was a Bush Devil :P Wrecked it over the years but now I want one. Thinkning of maybe getting a Bush Devil II and a MCI decal set :P
Blackfoot, was my first Tamiya but love the Madcap
Nicky Swaby
Yeah me too, I need to get hold of a MadCap 🚗💨💨
Nice, old Buggy car!
Awesome car the thunder shot. My first was the super sabre. My mate had the thunder shot. I now have both originals in mint condition. Unfortunately had to use tbg shells though.
The background rules! Tamiya, Tamiya, and more TAMIYA!!👍👍.
The original Blackfoot . The one I had the tires where rock hard. Later models had supper soft tires
Hornet was my first car, but my Fox was the one that was special to me, I loved that car.
My mother said I wasted my money but I had it all back together and running the next day.
keithrx3c
Love your post buddy 😊👊🏻
Thanks for watching...
Mine was the same very car and had every hop up available and annoyed I sold it recently as it went with a lot of fond memories.
The Grasshopper 😊
First tamiya was a 2nd hand Striker, raced this till destruction at Tansley Off Road Club ,didn't win any trophies with it :( but then I got a brand new thunder shot :) I put a Team Tanaplan motor in it with twin shocks and the huge wing .I then won the most improved driver in 1988 :) all funded by my paper round lol.
Apex Magnet
Love it 😊
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
Thanks for sharing those great memories Glenn! My first Tamiya was a original Blackfoot which I got for Christmas as well. Just finishing up doing a resto/mod on another original Blackfoot this one has the MIP diff and brushless and a lot of aluminum bits..lol
Looking forward to seeing you restore your first Tamiya my friend :)
One question - how can you tell if its a re-release kit?
Eug Vic
Thanks man 👊🏻
I’m not sure I can help as I like them all 😂👊🏻
I have just finished the videos on the DF-03 White Impact which I really liked 🚗💨💨
@@TAMIYALegends Gone for the Dark Impact with a sport tuned motor. Can't wait to get it and start build number 2!
Great video Glenn, as always!

Great channel and content as always 👍
My first tamiya was also F150 Ford Ranger back in 1982.
Luckily still have it !!!
Keep up the great work 🤗
Ian Ellison
Thanks buddy 😊👊🏻
Thunder shot was my first car in about 1988-89 ish, had to put £30 of my own paper round money to it for an Xmas prescent
Love it, I had to do the very same 🤩👊🏻
Absolutely superb channel.
Absolutely loving your vids fella 👍
John Malone
Thanks for watching John 😊👊🏻
Midnight Pumpkin was my first RC car but I always wanted a Bigwig, just couldn't afford it at the time.
