Respect can be always earned when a manager is approachable, supportive and simply behaves ethically, assertively and is able to handle emotions as well as acts as a role model! Linda thanks for your inspiring videos.

I agree totally. THe manager must be approachable. My manager does not have good tactics at all. He wants to get along with everybody by letting them do what they want on company time. and he doesn't take full control over difficult situations when employees don't communicate well with eachother. He doesn't want to get involved so he lets the problems escalate.

A few points you missed are along people-management/leadership lines: 1) playing favourites among your staff - that is SURE to build resentment and lose respect 2) not addressing poor performance or bad behaviour, and similarly 3) not rewarding staff who have performed well consistently or clearly gone above and beyond for you.

I agree my manager favors my coworker and sides with him all the time. Also, when I get disrespected from this guy in front of everyone and my manager doesn't do anything, I feel really bad. I've approached my manager about my coworkers behavior and it just backfires on me, so I just want to change teams.

Fear tactics (read bullying) is counter productive. It just leads to people either quitting or they'll find a way to retaliate. The best bosses I've had are the ones who show me respect and behave with class and dignity.

Excellent video. Finally someone to tell people that respect does not equate to fear, obedience, control/micromanaging and titles but actual alignment of values and mutual trust/ recognition that everyone is a human being an can make mistakes.

  • @tintinban
    @tintinban 5 років тому +11

My boss makes 3 of those mistakes.
The last quote is absolutely true. I tried to tell that to my managers. I even try to apply that myself to my colleagues, although I am not the manger. But it backfired. People have taken advantage of my willingness to share knowledge and information. They went around and showed off as if they were the smart ones and resourceful (typical middleman dealings).

  • @loscortez6936

Fear tactics really depends on the work environment. I’ve worked in places where managers allow subordinates autonomy and in return those employees slack off and take advantage of not being supervised. I have also witnessed managers run a tight ship , micro manage, and instill fear if employees don’t produce. This tactic works best in a retail environment supervising youngsters.

Thank you for this video. Very clear and concise. They don’t teach teachers about how to delegate or manage employees in a classroom. I teach in NYC in special education, in a small class. The school is in a low socio economic urban area.
I love the children and the job, and my other colleagues, but 1 staff member in my class is very rude and disrespectful towards me.
I want to learn how to be firm so no one walks all over me, I need to manage the team better, and use better boundaries, many of the ppl who come to work in schools are not trained, and they don’t train teachers on how to train staff - so thank you again for this video!

I hope she take this suggestion into consideration. I am new proj coordinator in a very totally new industry (finance to IT, just imagine the diff) & suddenly have to be a PM on proj that totally new to me. My cooworkers are mostly higher ranking than me even though they are much younger. Lately they just questioned me in front of many people & talked on my weaknesses in front them all. I was so demotivated by that & totally frustrated. Coz I will get this feedbacks almost every week & it affect my reputation with many. It influenced the other team members & they disrespect me bit by bit. 😭
I know I am new & I know I must catch up a lot. However, this kind of disrespect is totally wrong & tbh, not a good sign for me.

    Hi Linda,
I have the exact opposite. My Supervisor doesn’t respect me and therefore I show no respect to him. Here’s why I do not respect him. Day one he said to me I never take the blame for anything. He said it in a joking manner so I thought he was joking. He throws me under the bus to the Director and to every one else saying I made the error even when I don’t have access or out of the office. I try to clear my name but no one seems to listen. He go through my personal bag in my office. When he gets caught he try’s to imply I am doing something wrong which I never have done. He tells everyone I don’t know my job but when I try to move to a different department he bad mouth me to keep me from getting the job. He always want to be the one every one looks up to and to let everyone thinks he is this great guy but he really isn’t and he always have to let everyone knows when he came up with a suggestion that works. When I make a suggestion or comes up with an idea he takes the credit. I have put up with this for years and he said to me I know people in high places. Once I reported him and he tried to set me up to make it look like I am stealing which I never done. Please Help!

Can i give some insight? I hope i can help. Im not saying my workplace is the same as yours. But i can give you a perspective. Our managers often dont know what to do. We get new managers all the time. Because the higher ups are always firing them, or the managers quit due to stress. We have to " train" managers how to do our jobs. Because they have to help us sometimes. When they dont know how to do it, we almost have to delegate to a certain degree. Like " hey to help me out , you can do this, ", thats if they are willing to do that. At my workplace we get frustrated because some of us are in isolated locations where we rarely see a manager. So we kind of have to self manage ourselves. When we ask for managers help, they are nowhere to be found. ( we deal with customers, selling, etc.). So sometimes, when our hours are wrong, when we need to have things taken care of for us, etc, we have to hound them or it will never get done. Your workers may know their job better than you do. Unless you have done it yourself. That is just a fact . So, your workers may actually be trying to help, or thik they are doing the right thing by letting you know. My questions for you, where they reporting what they were going to work on for the day, and just waiting for your approval? Or were they actually " bypassing you", and engaging in insubordination? Also, keep in mind, some people have stronger personalities, so they may not realise they are " overstepping". If you are feeling this way, kindly explain to them your point of view. I hope this gives you some perspective, im only trying to help.

If there is an employee who has access to senior management, and each and every discussion that is done within the team towards an action is more or less presented to one person in the senior management. This is causing each and every time, the person in question is being questioned by the one person, more towards approach/method rather that the scientific or logical/reasonable assessment. This is at times is leading to a severe pressure on the Manager to work with the whims and fancies of the other employee. The actual and abstract justifications are not taken into consideration and never allowed to be explained. For e.g., there is a law which needs to be complied, but there is a severe gray area interpretation towards the same. This grey assessment is not in practice nor recommended in regular practice and is highly risky, but, when informed about this - the reasoning goes towards attack ethically/morally and more towards personal reputation damage rather than assessing the same appropriately. Neither in this case, the other person is interested to take responsibility for the action, not accepted by the manager. What should be done under such circumstances. Reporting may not resolve issue.

Ok Great Advise, empower, delegate not micro manage ! Easy on write ups ! Some managers used to give too many and loose the morale of the employees!! Not be defensive and be insecure of outstanding employees.

    Dear Linda,
thank you for this video is very interesting i learned a lot of skills from you.
my question how about if the employees are helping and training their manager and over all the manager use her weaknesses to micromanage them?
how to handle this situation with the called Manager who need more skills?
    Thank you

3:06 This is actually the biggest reason for my disrespect issues. They get to know quite a bit about me and fill the rest in their mind that they know me, forgetting other facts about me. They forget major parts and only see me how they want to because of my age. They don't see my schedule or how many hours I'm working at the different stores. They assume I work 4 hours and go home because of my high energy that gets the job done so quickly (instead of efficiently and focused). In reality I am going to the next store to finish payroll, schedules, and more. Then, the next.

I feel like the only reason is because of discrimination. I worked for stocking and was pretty fast but the new employees always win and get the more easy pay and just get to lay back more.

What if it’s the other way around? Which it has been in most jobs I’ve had... I’m currently a FH Receptionist for a huge office building, which has different companies on every floor, I deal daily with a myriad of CEO’s, Finance Execs, Medical Researchers, and a whole heap of Office Managers, as well as all their employees, all whilst doing my actual duties, but they more often than not, show no respect to the Receptionist (even tho we are the first impression of their business). I think this video should have been the other way around... How do Employees gain respect from people with ‘titles’? I may only be a Receptionist but I am intelligent, intuitive, professional and hope to one day manage one of those offices on the other floors 😆

Omg my managers should watch this video. They are such jerks. They talk down to us, ask us to do things that are against our jobs, have an attitude, and they wonder why we dont like them. We are regular employees but we have to " train" them, because the higher ups dont, and then they tell us to do the wrong and opposing things , things that can get us into trouble, ( but they wont be blamed), just because they are a manager. What ignorant a holes. Omg.

I have a talented but awful employee- she asks pointed questions, tries to make me look bad, and is always giving me sideye. When I put it back on her to look into an answer to one of her questions, she says "I think that's YOUR job". How should I respond to that? She's poisoning the environment.

Maybe you should ask her if there was ever something you did to offend her in the past, and try to make good on that? At my work, there are many talanted fast learning employees. But many of them are jerks. They are jerks to other employees, etc, because they think they are better. Im a slow learning employee but i work hard and have a willingness to learn new things. But it maybe that somewhere something went wrong between you and her. I dont know, just a guess. It could be something small? Idk. Ive had managers make fun of my height jokingly. But i never thought that eas funny. Because of that, i guess in a way ive kinda of resented them in a way. Also,i never really recieve a thank you for anything. Its rare. Not saying your employee is great. But it might be something deeper. Idk
