I always thought of data as an uncountable noun, so tend to use the singular verb. Good to know that the plural verb is also correct to use.

How about the option to remove both? “The data points to a recession…” removing the debate altogether 😁 …. Thank you!
Great stuff as ever Dr Lynch. I’ve always felt instinctively uncomfortable with “the data are”. It just doesn’t sound right, grammatically correct or not.
