One of the things I love most about this production is how animalistic the swans' movements are. They really lean into choreography that evokes the way animals really use their bodies.

Also, the unclothed male torso allows us to see the musculature of the "swans" and their power. Great choice in costume, esp for this scene.

Swans have this floaty, romantic image, but are hefty, aggressive animals. They've been known to drown all the ducks on a pond to claim the territory as exclusively their own.

Swans are aggressive ! I wouldn't want to get too close to one especially in breeding season.
This is a pretty accurate portrayal.

I took my rather reluctant adult daughter to see this, her first ballet and my first Matthew Bourne. At the end we all stood in ovation, I turned to look at my daughter still sat down and crying her eyes out, speechless and so moved, what an introduction to ballet. That must be the reaction every choreographer wants.

I watch the last few minutes of this whenever I need a good cry. The Queen's facial expression and the sheer physical desperation of her grief when she finds her son dead never fails to make me sob.

I’m with you. I can NEVER watch the finale of Swan Lake - happy or sad -
Without sobbing my heart out. A couple of years ago was sitting beside someone in the theatre who was annoyed that she had forgotten her tissues. I told her I had just been to the loos to stock up (!!) and we both sat there happily blubbing!!!

I said so had I but had got a load of loo roll so we both sat there together at the finale sobbing our little hearts out lol

After watching multiple variants of how swan lake ends this is the one that fills the beats of the music best and tells the clearest story. All the movements are incredibly lifelike and so visually compelling, especially the emotions being conveyed. The ending is so sad but the thought of them being together in death makes it bittersweet.

I've loved this music since early youth. (I'm 70 now.) But never have I seen it so truthfully or fully expressed in dance as this version. Bourne's choreography has been revived again and again and, while Adam Cooper's original Swan will haunt me until my dying day, this more recent version also delivers the goods.

What a brilliant way to rewrite the very famous Swan Lake in a shocking and non-traditional way, that's beauty of an art, in just 13 minutes, fantasy, reality, universal, a drama full of bold contents, and the unexpected ending, wow! Connecting audience from different background, the first impression, and the lasting impression! Love the stage setting, the shadow... the simplicity of white color speaks more and beyond....

      @unwillingtodisclose 4 роки тому +9

philipmah Very late to reply but, no one is ever too old to dance! The best part of dance is, after all the creativity and glorious artistry, challenging one's own body. To teach your toes to slide across the floor as suptile (gosh, I am so sorry I have forgotten this word in English!) as fingers, to watch your extension go higher, your turn out increase, and oh when your arms and hands finally work!
I write this lying on a heating pad after having gone a bit too rough rolling out my lower back muscles before trying to follow along with Tamsra Rojo's live ballet class. I've danced more this week than I have in years, yet my body, at 55 and largely unused for the ladt 10 years is not up for it. No matter how much it grumbles, hurts, refuses to extend or perform a full plié in second (first is out of the question) I will never stop dancing.
And since I've already written far too much, I shall dive in further: I started ballet when I was 26-27 years old. I am not properly trained, but Inam very focused on technique as I know this prevents injuries, IF one warms up properly! Please don't anyone ever think they are too old to dance! Just because one may well never learn proper choreography or have feet like Tamara Rojo or be made of rubber like Ed Watson, does not mean one is not a proper dancer! I am a horrid dancer, but I AM a dancer where it matters the most: in the sense of belonging and freedom and absolute athleticism and physical strength it gives me--and I want that for you too, and everyone who thinks they may wish to dance.
You will find loads of tutorials on UA-cam. Be careful you are learning proper foot and hip placement. Try Claudia Dean, she is brilliant, as is Kathryn Morgan. Go dance, as Billy Eliott said, its like flying. You likely have time these days as the whole world is temporarily shut down just now. We have a duty to keep our spirits up during this pandemic; what better way than by feeling our days with creativity and artistic freedom? Be eccentric in your free days and relish the joy of complete freedom from judgement snd responsibility. We don't have to "pass" into the constraints of social acceptance, but we can fly in absolute abandon through these days of social distancing. Be free, be a dancer, be safe, be healthy, and make sure you are careful about technique when you first dance! Good, robust health everyone!
Disclaimer: I cannot bear to read and edit my impulsive text, thus I apologise for the errors I let stand. I do know how to write properly, my dyslexic brain does not remember how to spell, and I trust all readers will be kind and understanding about my little disability. Good health, wassail!

I’ve never heard the story of swan lake. The only production I have watched is the nutcracker and the sleeping beauty. This production was breathtaking. The set design was good, the costume design is very simple but it is intricate. This showed the real way swans act. Swans are very combative, mean, and they over all are just assholes. They got the movements of the swans perfectly down to the behavior before they strike. The leads were very good at telling the story. We saw in this act that one needs the other but both were hesitant to come together as one. So we see the polar opposite behaviors. The struggle they have to overcome them and see them as useful. The end when the two become one. Perfect

This ending is so incredibly beautiful and very touching. The prince is clearly mad but still loves his swan who also loves him back . The queen realises her mistake and her hesrt breaks as the two lovers are reunited in death. Stunning and as a gay man it hits me harder.
