I'm repairing the servo motors of that kind of machines. This is so cool to see them in action. I could watch that all day ... :))

Absolutely amazing! I can't even start to think about the amount of time it took to program it so it does every single move, drill, turn, etc. It took me and my dad a good 20 minutes just to program out CNC to drill 8 holes.

I could watch it all day too. until it was time to clock out :)

Somebody mentioned "why would you machine an engine block out of billet instead of cast it?"The F1 teams (for example) make all their parts out of billet.I can't imagine them having any castings in their race cars. Makino and Yasda rule.
Also Mazak were the first japanese company to build a plant outside Japan. they built it in Kentucky.

I run this same machine at work, just with only 1 spindle and a tailstock. Im sure this is a EIA program. Esprit Cam is a very good software, and that is what we use where I work.

Good verification software like Vericut or Predator could knock many hours off that part. Can you imagine having to single block a program like that?
The actual toolpathing probably didn't take as long as you might think. With a part of such high complexity, the original CAD file had to have been sent directly from the engineers to the CAD/CAM dept. Much faster than reading a print and creating lots of new geometry.

@bobbyjc1 not if you are only making one or a couple. casting has a HUGE tooling cost. if you dont plan to make thousands upon thousands casting would cost way more.

So far no one has directly replied your question, and i will take the challenge.
Casting results in product of less accuracy and precision. This is inevitable due to the uncontrollable cooling process and uneven pressurizing, Also, cracks and bubbles can not be completely eliminate, and you can probably imagine that cracks and bubbles are main reasons for fatigue and failure of metal,
and will drastically reduce the engine's strength.

@BurningUp99 yes, everything is drawn out using a CAD program. Then those drawings are turned into cut paths for the tooling. the machine is stupid, it will only do exactly what it is told.

Thermal Analysis machine for metal, composite, ceramic alloys what I using on university cost 240,000 euros, and it's big as microwave but have some serious equipment. This CNC machine cost alone at least 2 million € or even more, without tools, and without software.

@gsxrben84 I work a HAAS and I gotta say that I agree with you. It's a heap of shit compared to most. But the place I work for are tight and wont spend the cash. I prefer Fanuc too. I just find it easy to get on with.

How do these machines know what to do is the whole design programmed on computer first then the machine translates the instructions?

They're always recycled. You don't get the value per pound you paid for, but it's better than zero. Usually the customer supplies the material so it ends up being profit!

I dont understand why you would machine a block instead of cast it? Wouldnt it be cheaper to cast it and finish it with machining? or are you just showing the capabilities of this CNC?
