They live their entire lives SEALED inside a JAR │ Seasonal Wetland Ecosphere - 6 Month Update!

  • Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
  • In this video we take a look at the Seasonal Wetland ecosphere I built 6 months ago. I built it in the summer, when the water source had dried out. I added new water to the substrate, which enabled the ecosystem present to recover from their summer dormancy.
This ecosphere has a lot of plant growth. Animals such as the wandering snails and dwarf flat ramshorns feed on them. There is also algae present which feeds a majority of the organisms such as the bladder snails and ostracods. Predators such as Hydras and Flatworms hunt prey within the jar such as Ostracods and young snails.
One of the most unique species I've encountered within this ecosphere are the Green water mites. I struggled to film them during my previous videos due to their speed. I was very happy to be able to record some footage of them this time for you guys. I find their unusual body shape and coloration fascinating!
There are a lot of snails living in this ecosphere. Bladder snails, Dwarf Flat Ramshorns and Wandering snails. They seem to all be doing well and I'm hopeful they will continue to coexist for years to come. Wandering snails are my favorite species of snail so it brings me a lot of joy seeing them thrive within this ecosphere.
I am very happy with the ecosphere and it's easily become one of my favorites. Hope you guys like it too!
If you would like to see this ecospheres progression videos check out this playlist:

Please do not stop doing what you're doing. You enrich our lives more than UA-camrs with millions of followers do simply because you humbly take the time and effort to intimately show us a very small but major part of the world that we would otherwise never be able to see and appreciate. You're like a microscopically based Steve Irwin.

Love your work, keep it up. We would all really love a Q and A session:)
I have attempted several ecospheres and, so far, had limited success. The first two died after weeks, I still have two on the path there, but I am still enjoying the path they take.
I am down to three reasons:
    1. Sunlight (too much? too little?)
    2. Temperature (too high? too low?)
    3. Having taken them from artificial (if very old) systems in my town, all with a fresh water supply.
Will try it again in spring with an old, natural pond and see how it goes.

    • @ichrised
      @ichrised 3 роки тому +1

@@Corvus_albus that only applies with sunlight, temperature shouldn't matter as long as it doesn't freeze or gets 20 degrees hotter than room temperature. @@mrmissalot8311 well, you can put any land plant for decoration like grass or tree branch. See if they decompose in the water. If not, then you're lucky, but if it decomposed, it become food for soil organism in your jar

@@afifbrian2540 Yeah so far ive found that grass and moss can climatise to being aquatic, ive only had grass grow on the surface of water. Also i tend to seal my jars after a week or so, so too many rotting plants can cause an algal bloom or kill the system.

Have you ever considered that the Earth might just be a jar of an alien, recording us and uploading the videos to an intergalactic youtube? "Look at those worms crawling around. Aren't they interesting? Why are they suddenly all wearing masks?"

This channel inspired me to do the same thing. My first jar died somewhat quickly (I saw a sewage truck cleaning the area a few days later, so it was probably polluted somehow), but it had some interesting species like a massive scary-looking white worm and some pond snails. The second one is still going, though, having gone through several different stages before finding (what seems to be) equilibrium. I had a dragonfly nymph in there, some water calves and a lot of other stuff, but now it's mostly copepods (they came back after having been gone for a while), worms and Ramshorn snails in there. Amazingly, a spider has survived on the surface for all this time - I wonder what it feeds on. There might also still be an alive beetle, but I haven't seen it for a while. Lastly, two big flies managed to hatch from nymph through pupae, but they didn't survive on the surface. The water is very dark, unfortunately. I would love to have it more clear, but I'm afraid messing with it will break the ecology down there. Thanks for letting me share (my wife thinks it's a bit yucky, hehe), and thanks Jartopia

What would happen if you introduced a frog to the habitat or dna?

    • @Jartopia

Frog would die. DNA would do nothing as there is already DNA in there.
