- I thought it would be neat to use an external laptop graphics card dock on this ol hp compaq 6005 pro usdt. It cost me $30 dollars plus
shipping. I already had the dock an a extra GTX 1050. the only thing is
will it work? And will the Amd Athlon ii x 2 hold up?

I thought gtx 1050 wont support/work on egpu because im planning to buy it for my laptop but i read a lot of people on the internet said they got error and trouble to use it with complication.Can u tell me how did u make it work
I'm pretty sure every card would work. It could be possible issues with the igpu of the laptop interfering with the gpu display output or maybe a defective egpu unit?

I bought the Intel version 8300 USDT, paid £20 delivered which for the Windows key made it a very good deal and I didn't know you could hook up an external vid card, for what was going to be my PC to run my microscope and hold some tech manuals this little machine is being promoted to front room telly home theatre machine/retroarch beastie as mine someone chucked in a i7 and 8 gigs of SODIMM, my poor laptop is now relegated to microscope duty as that is slow as tar in comparison lol
was kinda hoping to see a self-contained finished product

there's several different variations of these. I've been wanting one just for its size. . I want an 8300 model. with support for an i5/i7 with 2x mpci slots + a GPU slot. the model in the video looks more of a base model with just a single mpci slot for wifi only

Why the wifi card adapter? You have full x16 PCIe with the MXM slot, you can even get cards as powerful as the GTX 1050 for that form factor, but you will need to fit a bigger heatsink for that.
e: wait this is AMD model that doesn't have it lol. Intel does have socketed GPU.

modstek yeah same but the ones I have found either cost $200 usd or don't support the 980mx card and if they do they don't support the i5 maybe in a year or two they will be more known and distributed a lot more widely
As other people suggested can you try and update the CPU to x4 Athlon. On the HP site it says they have shipped the same PC with x4 Athlons

ugh, i have a similar system, phenom ii x2 4gb 1333mhz gtx 1050 2gb and its a bottleneck mess! my gpu gets no usage while my cpu and ram get torned apart by games.

Hey so I’ve been trying for the past week to do the same thing but I can’t make it work. I have everything connected like it’s supposed to but when I turn on the mini desktop the beast turns off and won’t turn on again unless I turn the desktop off. I tried changing the power supply cause I was using the one that’s like for laptops and I connected it to the one I use for my main PC but nothing happened, not even the green light turned on. I really don’t know what else to do and if you could help me out that’d be great. Anyways thank you!

on hp u can look it up through there site it will tell exactly what board it has and what cpus it can upgrade to max ram everything i niticed one of your comments to someone else satating u were hoping someone could tell u what cpus will work with it

Does the dock get any power from the pcie slot or do you need external? Thinking if getting a gt 1030.
that's a mini PCIe on the Mainboard. It's suitable for Wifi and/or Bluetooth extension cards. I doubt it can deliver up to 75 watt. Maybe it can deliver 10 or 15 watt but that's it.
So the 1030 also won't work as it can use up to 30 watt. And this card will take 29 to 30 watt when 100% GPU load. So you must use the ext PSU.
And I'll think the external PSU will feed the PCIe slot for the GPU so it can use up to 75 watt.
Would be interesting how to power a 1080... cause it need external 6 or 8 Pin PCI power.

I have an HP 8300 elite SFF (pretty much the same design) and I was wondering if I need to upgrade my PSU if I want to put a GTX 1060 or RX 570 in it and if so do I need any adapters
The SSF model is bigger. It has a 16x PCI-E slot but you won't be able to fit a 1060/RX570 on the case and the stock power supply doesn't come with the 6-pin power connector.

i strongly suggest you upgrading the cpu, because it is bottlenecking your gpu. you can go for Xeon X5470 or E5450, they are pretty cheap on aliexpress and much faster than Q6600. greets

I'll think for 99% sure the PSU is necessary. Cause mini PCIe can't deliver that much power as it's designed for "low-power extension cards" like Bluetooth and/or WiFi
