Ingredients: • 3 tbsp sesame oil • Two onions • About three cloves of garlic • 15 cm ginger (handful, five times what you would use in a normal recipe) • Red chilis • Ten shiitake mushrooms, roughly chopped • 115 ml orange juice • 100 ml maple syrup (sub with agave nectar) • 100 ml tamari (sub with soy sauce) • Tamarindpaste (sub with molasses) • Anis • Cinnamon • 2-3 l water • 250-300 g brown rice noodles • Bean sprouts • Bok choy • Scallions • Mint • Sesame seeds
My mom starts screaming when you pour the orange juice haha. I know there're a lot of Vietnamese complaining about how unoriginal the recipe it but as a Vietnamese myself, I kinda like how innovative and creative this recipe is. It's super fun to watch because of your bold ingredients. I'll definitely try this and I think it's a great recipe too. Just don't cook it in front of a Vietnamese or tell them it's pho (like i never cook pasta in front of my Italian friends. I did it once and I thought he was gonna butchered me).
LOL. Yeah, orange juice and maple syrup don't go in phở. =) Call it bún chay but not phở. Helen's Recipe's phở chay is the real thing. Innovation is welcome but name it right. My kids wouldn't eat bánh bèo with the standard toppings but loved it with pizza sauce.
Agreed, looks good but it's not phở. I'd recommend Helen's Recipes Phở Chay: ua-cam.com/video/GlaVCZvI-o8/v-deo.html . Vietnam is paradise for vegans with tiny vegan shops everywhere. Just look for "Quán ăn chay" or "Quán chay" and you'll find a good meal.
I appreciate your recipe and this looks yummy but this isn’t pho. You didnt use the right noodle or roast the spices. There is no bok choy, mint, orange juice, maple syrup... in pho. And the noodles need to be cooked separately. Pho is the most famous Vietnamese traditional food. I understand there are different ways of making a dish but you can’t make any bowl of noodle soup and call it “pho”.
Before you start bashing people for their take on a dish, you should realize that Vietnamese Pho is actually based off of a French dish. No food is 100% original. No art is.
@@TreborSelt Ah yes, Westerners with no background in Lingusitics keep thinking phở comes from pot au feu. Sorry to burst your bubble but Phở (rice noodle) has its etymology from Cantonese fan meaning the same thing.
I love it when you guys say “ and now I will add three tbsp of sesame oil”. Then you just dump the shit in. Lol lol. You all don’t even measure. Ya gotta luv it!
I was thinking the same thing. They sound so stupid and disrespectful because of this. I love the Happy Pear but completely unimpressed by those Bosh guys
If you haven't watched them already and were looking for something more authentic, you might like Helen's Recipes version or the Viet Vegan :) (although maybe you already know how to make it yourself judging by your surname?)
Love, it's not meant to be an impersonation of veganism; instead, it's meant to entice others into an option of vegetarianism. Let's now downplay this lad for his efforts, yea?
They made enough for 4 - 6 servings even though they only plated up one but I do see what you're saying. I'd start with about 1/2 what the recipe calls for then see how it tastes. You can always add a little sweetness at the end if you need to. If you are used to dishes with less sweetness, it will probably taste OK.
I loved this recipe. I could not be a traditional Pho (as some users claimed), but it's tasty, isn't it? What could we do with remainings of the base broth?
You guys put your own twist and kart wheel on Pho. I'm normally a traditionalist, but I know the importance of evolution and innovation. It's good because it's yours now. Call it "Pho Bosh Happy Pear". The most important thing is refining the taste and a small following cult. Cheers and best of luck.
The dude who stands awkwardly in the corner for most of the video was well pleased with his broth pouring results. Like yeah - I got this dudes! hhahaah
Love the new book, purchased at Waitrose salisbury after watching the Happy Pear gentlemen cook up a storm while entertaining us for the afternoon. I've already made two of the delicious recipes
swanseawales1979 sesame oil is so strong that it takes over the broth. You don’t need to use oil. If you want vegan pho, there’s a ton of videos you can find on UA-cam. If you want authentic pho, we do not use oil that’s for sure.
What they made was a wonderful looking Western style súp chay and I'm glad they did but it's definitely not phở. Western interpretations of other cutures' cuisines should be welcomed but we should still respect the names. For an authentic phở chay check out Helen's Cuisine version: ua-cam.com/video/GlaVCZvI-o8/v-deo.html
it looks like Ramen rather than Pho. Sure taste is yumm but work on the presentation guys :) Your Vietnamese and other Pho-lovers would appreciate that!
Look up Pho Chay if you think it's impossible to make properly and vegan - it already exists in Vietnam. For recipes I would suggest checking out the channel Helen's Recipes or Viet Vegan (or even Pick Up Limes for someone who isn't Vietnamese but has tried to make her own version). I'm sure this is a tasty soup but it doesn't seem like any Pho I know of, they didn't even char the aromatics.
Ok I'm sorry while I have loved watching The Happy Pear and tried recipes so this isnt to insult your channel I bought this book on a whim in TK max and i was super excited to try this recipe with my bf especially as i missed Pho from when i visited Vietnam. While I understand making vegan substitutes this tasted nothing like Pho and actually didnt taste good at all! Why 100ml of maple syrup just why? I would reccomend you both visit Vietnham and do some research properly before claiming to know how to create a vegan version on an Asian dish. Not a happy customer 2 very upset stomachs 🤬

Definitely far from Pho'... but it does look tastey, just don't call it Pho'
Totally agree ^^
I don't care about names. If I can cook some form of pho (one of my favorite things to eat!) for my vegan son, I will give it a try.

Just made this. Was amazing. Thank you so much for getting our 2 young boys to eat greens!

Why do you pronounce it wrongly if you know how to do it right?? I don't get it :D
Seriously.

@A + 1 accually the guy in the middle pronounced pretty close. The word phở is really hard to pronounce.
They don’t know how to do it right, that’s why.
I love that you did this collab! Both teams are always happy and vibrant and the collar is just fantastic!
And the food looks absolutely delicious!

I understand that it is a vegan take on the Pho, but not even using the proper noodles is quite disappointing. There's nothing related to Pho

Trying to cut down on salt, what's your opinion on coconut aminos as an alternative to tamari?

A perfect combo tamari and orange mushrooms yum.

how much anis do we add? 2-3?
I wish your products were available in the US!
Awesome recipe! Thanks guys!
You deserve a larger stove for cooking such magnificence.
Can dried mushrooms be added to boost flavour it will be great with coconut milk.
Great idea but I would use Cashew milk or Milkademia for that rich nutty flavour
As long as you soak them, def! I did something similar last week and turned out f*cking bril! Let us know how yours turns out, lad. :)
Great video guys. Love You both!

I can't eat Vietnamese food because coriander tastes like soap to me
Alfons Schuhbeck no coriander in this recipe. Typically pho has Thai basil and/or mint and no coriander.
Apparently it's genetic that coriander tastes delicious or like soap.
All one must do is simply not add fresh coriander to their meal = solved! Glad we could help, lad. :)
Sesame oil shouldn’t be heated and used as a cooking oil.
why would you call it Pho? Looks good but really not a Pho Soup!
