Today, I’m sharing the 1st video of a 2 part series making over my friend Kelsy’s small loft apartment! Kelsy is a good friend of mine, who I met through my roommate Marie and she recently just got her very own studio apartment in Tucson, AZ. This apartment is just a tad over 400 sq feet and I wanted to make it super homey yet functional. As mentioned in the video, Kelsy has a muscle condition known muscular dystrophy, so ensuring there was space for her scooter and ADORABLE service dog, Duke, was crucial! Stay tuned for part 2...!

OMG I recognize the hallway that Kelsey was recording from when she introduced herself, because I did an internship there when I was in undergrad! The program Kelsey is in does AMAZING work. I thought I wanted a career in research, but it wasn’t for me. Biomedical research takes a level of diligence and patience that I do not possess. Much love to you, sis, from alllll the way over here in Cleveland, where I go to med school now. (Say hi to both Dr. Khanna’s for me!)

Drew, you are such a good egg, helping her out like this, you use your talents for such good.
I love the designs of all the furniture and they look great together. My only thing is, as a person who used to live in a garage apt, I would *hate* my bed being right next to the kitchen like that. The sofa being there makes much more sense for several reasons. It breaks up the space in an unnatural way and prevents a natural flow. By putting the painted arch there, you basically locked in that layout. I mean, I still like what y'all did and I loved watching the transformation, but I don't think it's sustainable in this configuration.

I was thinking the same thing, I wouldn’t like my bed in my kitchen. Always create different zones when designing. And stop with those arches 🙈.

Drew, our son had a stroke at 22 and is disabled. I sincerely appreciate your doing this makeover, helping Kelsey with her place. We had to do major work on our house when he come home to make it functional for a wheelchair. He is married now and has a daughter, walking 😱🎉🎉, but still dealing with major disabilities. You are the BEST!!❤️❤️🥳
Mentioned earlier that we had a son in a wheelchair. Our son is no longer of this world (it was a major and multiply disabling stroke) but we too had to change everything in our house so I know what you mean. And cheers for your son and you!

@@TamarLitvot OH, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I was out of town when it happened... and I took "red-eye" flight home. I kept praying for him to live and keep his lovely personality, and that we could deal with the physical limitations. And that is what has happened. I feel so grateful everyday that he is still here. Thank you so much for your kind comment. ❤️
@@delanascott8890 Thank you so much, Delana. We were fortunate that friends from out church helped with the work on the house. The wheelchair was hard on the floors and walls, but thank goodness he doesn't need it anymore!

I love the idea of curtains on the bed, to have the option of “closing off” the right side to the kitchen and making piano area cosier!

@@maddscientist3170 I think that depends if the kitchen has an open flame or not. It might be a hot plate. She also may not cook very often! I think it is also possible to get flame resistant sprays for fabrics :)
Oh Drew, this made me cry. Lost my mom to MD and my sister has MD, too, the congenital version. She’s in assisted living and I’m having such a hard time to design her private space. Anyway, great inspo!!!
Plus, how will she comfortably watch tv at that angle?

I'm excited to see it finished but I would not have placed the bed there, so close to the stove. There is room to push it further back. I would have put it under the window, not in canopy bed.
I totally agree! That really put me off. There has to be a way to either locate the bed or somehow camouflauge the kitchen area so you're not staring at the damn stove, sink and fridge from the bed - or from the sofa! UGH!
Sadly, I agree. It looked like she couldn't open the oven door. Maybe she doesn't use the stove. I love everything Drew does and I hope he addresses this in Part 2.
Hi Tabatha! I totally see where your coming from and that’s why I also tried that other orientation! However I knew Kelsy would prefer this orientation as she doesn’t use the kitchen much and this gives her a better view of the TV from the bed where Kelsy spends most of her time!
I totally trust that Drew’s doing the best he can with what he has: this isn’t a knock on him. But honestly, I wonder why the original builders/developers/whoever was responsible for converting this space for residential use couldn’t put the kitchen in the nook area. I hate, hate, hate sleeping close to where I cook
I agree with you, however, if you think about it, Drew already purchased the furniture with a different space in mind. He thought he was going to work with a larger space so he picked furniture that suited a larger space. But he finds out just a few hours before boarding the plane and after he purchased the furniture that it was much much smaller. That gave him no time to purchase new furniture or figure out a new game plan (furniture takes time to deliver as well if the store doesn't already have it in their warehouse, and Drew is working on a schedule) I'm sure that if he knew the space was smaller he would have picked different pieces for the space

The councel is FABULOUS. i have been wanting one forwver. The bed is DRAMATIC and a great focal point. The couch CLASSIC and it all comes together EFFORTLESSLY. You inspire me! I have been struggling with decorating my 780 sq. ft. condo for what is going to be six years. Occasionally, I added a piece or two but I always hesitate and don’t know if things will look right. After watching you I think I’m ready to move forward. I love your work, Drew! I find that the canopy bed energetically takes up way more space, period. I would love to see the bed where it was originally, and the couch centered along the arch. I would have tried the bed horizontally against the brick wall, without the canopy . . .

Wonderful Drew, it looks amazing, I love how you made everything work in a small space. My best friend has MS, and I am always helping her do stuff, luckily she does not have to use a scooter yet, and she is older so that is so wonderful. I am her emergency call person, and I have taken her to numerous doctor appointments. I can't wait to see the final reveal you are always so amazing in all of your makeovers. 49- using a walker n scooter in Wisconsin. It is so difficult making space for my mobility aids. Like when i sit on my couch- my scooter is sitting off to the side in my very tiny space.

How lovely this apartment turned out. The color you chose for the arch and the furniture you picked out were so perfect. Small spaces can be hard, trying to fit all the necessities in and making sure the scooter can still have access to everything. Good job!!
Yes- small spaces can be tricky! Once you figure out the layout, the fun part begins :)

17:12 @lone fox. Pro tip.... When choosing paint. particularly the brand Baer paint. When you choose a paint color, ask the paint representative for the paint fan deck and find your color you choose then go to the very first color at the bottom. The bottom color will help you indicate if the color you picked has a true brown green, orange, gray (or whatever) color base. Lets say you looked at a color and you may have "thought" it more orange or pulling more green or whatever color. What's nice about bear paint ....the paint deck will let you know what's the "true" Base color.
I just came here to talk about Drew's interactions with the dog! When Duke jumped on him while he was kneeling on the floor and when Duke started shaking his chew toy towards Drew; I almost peed my pants! 😂😂😂 Drew was scared as sh*t! Lmao!

Love watching you. This is such a small space to work in. Love the console. My problem is the bed. Like the painted wall but the bed is too masculine looking. You said she was a girlly girl and her bed suited that more. I also think the bed is too close to the "kitchen". Safety issue? Can't wait to see the reveal. Such a wonderful thing to do for a friend.
The bed does look masculine in this video but by the end it get's the perfect blend of feminine! The arch and new bedding really softens the silhouette of the bed!
Wonderful makeover so far! Glad that you chose layout #1 because the open space is so much more important for her with a scooter. I think though that only one end table is necessary as the other one seems to crowd the kitchen area. Can’t wait to see Part 2!

Drew, I don't think it was wise to put the bed that close to her stove. If she ever cooks, that'll ooze and the bed might start to like, smell. I don't know if it maybe doesn't work with the scooter - but I would have liked to put a smaller bed in the nook instead.

Hi Marina! I should have mentioned that Kelsy doesn't cook often at all so she was totally fine with the placement on this wall (I ensured to ask prior). It was a bit challenging as there really were only 2 orientations that worked well and this one just felt better for her lifestyle!

I love the feeling of the room and the furniture choices. However, did not like the bed in front of the kitchen space. Doesn’t flow right for me and looks totally off! I would have converted the little side nook area into a walk-in closet/storage. Made faux doors to hide/ create the closet/storage space and that way it simulates a wall so that you could the place the bed closer to that side. I would have placed the couch against the wall where the keyboard is. Made a very narrow high island table with stools right I front of the kitchen to create a designated kitchen/eating spaces. Add a chair that swivels into bedroom also into living area. Etc….

Everything looks beautiful! In terms of function though, I would hate to “cook where I sleep”, I feel like the bed is just too close to the kitchen and the sheets would constantly smell like food. I’d love an update video on this one too see how she kept the place and if she made any changes!!

LOVE your energy and the arch is fabulous. I also appreciate how you kept your friend's needs in mind but were still able to give her a beautiful place. Lots of people want to critique the decisions made, but you were quite clear MANY times about the type of flow she needed to have. And there's the large dog..lol who needs to be able to move around as well. Cannot wait to see part 2.

I've painted arches on walls; I just tied a small paint brush on the same string that I used to draw the original line. Made it so much simpler than trying to paint in the line. LOVE this makeover.
That wall with the arch is awesome. For some reason it makes it look like there might be a hall or window or something back there and makes the room look bigger. I love it! So nice to see her happy with her home.

For someone who's first priority has to be practicality in many areas of life because it's inaccessible for me otherwise, it's just really nice to see you put in the effort to make it functional and stylish. Because you don't have to sacrifice your style and your sense of beauty for accessibility.
