Gotta admit his pre-fight quote is one of the hardest things a 10 year old has ever read. When child me discovered Culex without my brother around I got scared but it was the fight that turned a boy into a man.
To this day I don't get why people would destroy Peach's ability to heal just to give her that defense. My favored setup: Mario - Lazy Shell, Super Suit, Attack Scarf Mario at his absolute strongest. Best possible stats, immunity to instant death and most elemental attacks. Geno - Star Gun, Lazy Shell, Jinx Belt The Jinx Belt offers immunity to instant death and negates just over half the attack/magic attack penalties of the Lazy Shell. The shell offers elemental resistance. Peach - Frying Pan, Royal Dress, Safety Ring Keeps her magic attack strong so she can fully heal the party with every Group Hug. Safety Ring provides her elemental and instant death resistance. Learn the timing to block Culex's physical attack (it is instant, but CAN be blocked if you know when the attack starts relatively to who he acts after... he acts after Mario with this set up, but if Mario's speed is 50 or below, Culex acts after the Earth Crystal) and she will not go down easily, especially if you keep her Geno Boosted (timed).
Suddenly a boss from Final fantasy appears completely with a classically arranged tune. Imagine if they did that in other games. I guess they kinda did. It certainly happened in Kingdom Hearts.
Okay, fun freaking fact about Culex that I have learned: he is portrayed completely differently between the JP and EN releases of Mario RPG. In JP, apparently Culex is just a guy made of pure evil, while also being perplexed by Mario and co for being 3D... THEY HAVE ALL THE RIGHT TO MAKE CULEX A LIVE A LIVE-Octopath boss sprite for the remake. Either that, or literally make his encounter a sequel to the OG, cause he also stated he would return when he gets a 3D form.... but to keep the joke, why not make his model straight outta a PS1/N64 and make him outta lego pieces?
I pretty sure they’re going to do both, where during the first fight with him he will still be 2d and perplexed by your 3dness but in the rematch he will have achieved a 3d form
And honestly, this is really the only fight where they're an excellent help and can make the difference while you chip away at the crystals. All the other fights you can manage fine with the right equipment and decent level. The Safety Ring is the most broken accessory in the game - protects from all elemental attacks, status effects AND instant death? Holy hell, it makes fights a breeze.
I feel that it would be much funnier if he just stayed the exact same, with the sprite and the music, afterall he is an invader, he already looked out of place in the original game
Being lvl 15 and not using Peach for this fight was truly hard, when you start finding a game easy-make it hard and more enjoyable for youself by giving yourself random challanges.
I made a challenge where if anyone died I don’t use them even if they get fully healed I find a way to kill them and continue like thy if they whole party dies I start all over again it was challenging but fun I even did a no equipment run man that was hard to but fun

Playing through the remake currently, and I just beat this guy earlier today. Man, what a fun and challenging fight! Defeating Jinx was also insanely difficult yet gratifying.
It took me forever that in terms of Final Fantasy, Mario is a Dragoon. When he jumps, he jumps off screen. And you could even count Bowser as the dragon Mario opposes. That gave me such brain damage I'm left stupified.

I'd played FF1 and Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) at a young age, and could never make it very far. When FF4 (FF2 US) came out, I was old enough to learn the mechanics and understand the story. It holds a special place in my heart and will always be one of my favorite games. Mario RPG came along and I fell in love. I talked my mother into buying it "for a good report card," which isn't something I'd done before or since. I loved the gameplay along with the goofy, cartoonish characters and atmosphere. This fight, with the FF4 music, was so intense and mind-blowing.
God this takes me back. I never knew it was a crossover from FF. I just loved randomly coming across this guy in that one little village, I can't remember the name of it now, but you go in that one door and BOOM he appears!

Jinx was the one that surprised me, even though the fact he takes up 2 pixels was a hint this wasn't going to be pretty. Like another said, everything about Culex said "YOU'RE GONNA DIE" so I wasn't surprised at all when I did 😂
I've been playing this game for 20 years no guides or anything within the last 2 years I managed to find the lazy shell and beat Culex what amazes me is there is probably still hidden secrets I haven't found. Truly an amazing game. I hope we get a sequel someday I would probably cry tears of joy

This guy was way harder for me than most Final Fantasy bosses. It's not often I'm able to beat him, really. And I've beat some of Final Fantasy history's nastiest, deadliest, most terrifying bosses. Zeromus, Exdeath, Shinryuu, Omega, Cefca, Sephiroth, Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon, Ultima Weapon, Omega Weapon, Ultimecia, Hades, Ozma, Kuja, Necron, Braska's Final Aeon, Nemesis, Paragon, the list goes on. I fear Culex more than all of them. Except maybe Yiazmat... bastard.
The fact it's the FF 4 boss theme but with Mario RPG music flare it's amazing, THIS is how you do a crossover song, perfection.

Paper Mario started out as Super Mario RPG II by Square. Yep. I won't tell you the whole story behind THAT, but let's just say that Square stopped making Super Mario RPG II and handed it to Nintendo completely.
Sigh. Maybe Square and Nintendo will make something together again someday.

Now i'm REALLY interested how Culex would look in 3D from the remake. Especially how the music would sound.
I wonder if they'll keep him a 2d HD Sprite or if they'll do some sort of super realistic model with realistic shading just to emphasize how out-of-place he is

@@charlieasalgadosalgado1369 they own geno and mallow too which are already obviously given the OK. nintendo and square had a bad relationship from right after the release of the original SMRPG all the way through until now the switch era relations have improved which is why this game is possible

This guy was way harder for me than most Final Fantasy bosses. It's not often I'm able to beat him, really.
And I've beat some of Final Fantasy history's nastiest, deadliest, most terrifying bosses.
Zeromus, Exdeath, Shinryuu, Omega, Cefca, Sephiroth, Emerald Weapon, Ruby Weapon, Ultima Weapon, Omega Weapon, Ultimecia, Hades, Ozma, Kuja, Necron, Braska's Final Aeon, Nemesis, Paragon, the list goes on.
I fear Culex more than all of them.
