The fact it's the FF 4 boss theme but with Mario RPG music flare it's amazing, THIS is how you do a crossover song, perfection.

@@dizzle6709 From the looks of things, when Square was still developing it, the "proper" Super Mario RPG 2 they were working on, and the game we came to know and love as "Paper Mario", are, from the beginning of the development cycles of both, one and the same. As it turns out, Intelligent Systems just picked up where Square left off and finished its development.
@@LittleAl016 I dunno about that. I remember during that time period when I had nintendo power and all that stuff. They had previews for the RPG 2 and they were NOT paper mario. It was all images of things that looked like the art style of 1. I could be not remembering things correctly but that all happened before the internet, which, will be a weird concept in the 10-20 years from now "well its not on the internet so it's not true" because of lack of archiving or what have you.

Fun fact: The wind crystal is weak to jump attacks, just like you jumped on the wind fiend in FF4 to get her to drop her guard.

Okay, fun freaking fact about Culex that I have learned: he is portrayed completely differently between the JP and EN releases of Mario RPG. In JP, apparently Culex is just a guy made of pure evil, while also being perplexed by Mario and co for being 3D... THEY HAVE ALL THE RIGHT TO MAKE CULEX A LIVE A LIVE-Octopath boss sprite for the remake. Either that, or literally make his encounter a sequel to the OG, cause he also stated he would return when he gets a 3D form.... but to keep the joke, why not make his model straight outta a PS1/N64 and make him outta lego pieces?

Gotta admit his pre-fight quote is one of the hardest things a 10 year old has ever read. When child me discovered Culex without my brother around I got scared but it was the fight that turned a boy into a man.
Don't forget about the Amulet from Booster to make her basically invincible
To this day I don't get why people would destroy Peach's ability to heal just to give her that defense.
My favored setup:
Mario - Lazy Shell, Super Suit, Attack Scarf
Mario at his absolute strongest. Best possible stats, immunity to instant death and most elemental attacks.
Geno - Star Gun, Lazy Shell, Jinx Belt
The Jinx Belt offers immunity to instant death and negates just over half the attack/magic attack penalties of the Lazy Shell. The shell offers elemental resistance.
Peach - Frying Pan, Royal Dress, Safety Ring
Keeps her magic attack strong so she can fully heal the party with every Group Hug. Safety Ring provides her elemental and instant death resistance.
Learn the timing to block Culex's physical attack (it is instant, but CAN be blocked if you know when the attack starts relatively to who he acts after... he acts after Mario with this set up, but if Mario's speed is 50 or below, Culex acts after the Earth Crystal) and she will not go down easily, especially if you keep her Geno Boosted (timed).
Suddenly a boss from Final fantasy appears completely with a classically arranged tune.
Imagine if they did that in other games. I guess they kinda did. It certainly happened in Kingdom Hearts.

I feel that it would be much funnier if he just stayed the exact same, with the sprite and the music, afterall he is an invader, he already looked out of place in the original game

Man, I used all of my Red Essences against this dude.
Oh, the memories...
I saved my red essences specifically for this guy.
And honestly, this is really the only fight where they're an excellent help and can make the difference while you chip away at the crystals. All the other fights you can manage fine with the right equipment and decent level. The Safety Ring is the most broken accessory in the game - protects from all elemental attacks, status effects AND instant death? Holy hell, it makes fights a breeze.
@@peggieschafer485 - 100 damage to all (150 with an Attack buff) for the amount of time it takes that animation to complete? I'll pass lol.
I used Red Essence only because I did a play of never selecting HP boosts and no Lazy Shell
I dare someone to just use Mario, Bowser, and Mallow on Culex. And no Lazy Shell armor.
yeah i cant beat culex without the latest armor and weapons.....cant be done, unless I use red essence...and there is if i remember correctly only 4 of them
Okay, I'll make it Mario, Geno, and anyone besides Peach. No lazy shell armor, but anything else (items and gear) is okay.

This game has hands down some of the best music in mario especially the forest maze
This track in particular is from Final Fantasy IV, and was probably composed by Uematsu himself.

Being lvl 15 and not using Peach for this fight was truly hard, when you start finding a game easy-make it hard and more enjoyable for youself by giving yourself random challanges.

I made a challenge where if anyone died I don’t use them even if they get fully healed I find a way to kill them and continue like thy if they whole party dies I start all over again it was challenging but fun I even did a no equipment run man that was hard to but fun

Bowser may have some dark magic spells but he also swings around a chain chomp and fights with his claws. I'd say Dark Knight!

It might just be the FFIV boss theme, but in the context of a Mario game it goes from standard boss to "Shit just got real."
I remember being 14 and accidentally running into him... one of my best gaming memories! Its been so long but i remember thisbsong so clearly... it makes me a bit teary...

Paper Mario started out as Super Mario RPG II by Square. Yep. I won't tell you the whole story behind THAT, but let's just say that Square stopped making Super Mario RPG II and handed it to Nintendo completely.

I'd played FF1 and Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) at a young age, and could never make it very far. When FF4 (FF2 US) came out, I was old enough to learn the mechanics and understand the story. It holds a special place in my heart and will always be one of my favorite games.
Mario RPG came along and I fell in love. I talked my mother into buying it "for a good report card," which isn't something I'd done before or since. I loved the gameplay along with the goofy, cartoonish characters and atmosphere. This fight, with the FF4 music, was so intense and mind-blowing.
LMAO I HOPE THERE WILL BE THIS THEME IN THE REMAKE !!!

Did any of you guys fight this on your first play-through of the ORIGINAL super mario RPG? I ended up stumbling across this guy, and holy hell did it startle me. I thought it was just a side quest but NOPE! This guy attacks and scares the hell outa me with his sheer strength.
A guy that got his own boss music told me I was in for some shit. He utterly destroyed me. I got him back, eventually.
Jinx was the one that surprised me, even though the fact he takes up 2 pixels was a hint this wasn't going to be pretty. Like another said, everything about Culex said "YOU'RE GONNA DIE" so I wasn't surprised at all when I did 😂
This is gonna go hard in the remake.
It took me forever that in terms of Final Fantasy, Mario is a Dragoon. When he jumps, he jumps off screen. And you could even count Bowser as the dragon Mario opposes.
That gave me such brain damage I'm left stupified.
So peach is a white magician and geno a black magician, right?
@@erwinemmanuel5130 Peach is a White Mage for sure, and Geno being a Black Mage checks out due to his relation with stars (meteor, comet, etc). That, and all his skills are big damage moves (hell, even Geno Whirl mirrors Meteor)

God this takes me back. I never knew it was a crossover from FF. I just loved randomly coming across this guy in that one little village, I can't remember the name of it now, but you go in that one door and BOOM he appears!

I've been playing this game for 20 years no guides or anything within the last 2 years I managed to find the lazy shell and beat Culex what amazes me is there is probably still hidden secrets I haven't found. Truly an amazing game. I hope we get a sequel someday I would probably cry tears of joy

@@charlieasalgadosalgado1369 they own geno and mallow too which are already obviously given the OK. nintendo and square had a bad relationship from right after the release of the original SMRPG all the way through until now the switch era relations have improved which is why this game is possible
