      I like the way you have been able to keep up with the ups and downs only daily basis, the cultural differences and lifestyles of our people and entirely different environment, transportation etc etc , as humans sometimes we learn more when we leaves our comfort zone and take on other challenges elsewhere the reward is priceless, wishing you happy stay, God bless you and your family and your courageous Mom

    I just stumbled onto your channel and wow i got a big rush of memories. I am 61 yrs old and was raised in Liberia from age 6-17. I've lost a lot of memories over the years including the ability to speak or understand Liberian English. We lived at Firestone and then the bush near Greenville in Sinoe County where my parents ran a 22 bed hospital for a small privately owned rubber company. We left when the civil war broke out. This video was great to show my daughter what it was like for me. Thank you so much for this gift you gave me.

      @JoeyBriggs  4 роки тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed it! I am happy you were able to share some memories with your daughter. I was able to visit Firestone as well and spent some time down in Greenville with some friends. I also hiked the beach path from Rivercess into Sinoe county and stayed out in the bush in villages along the way. Absolutely Loved my time in that part of the country. Your parents sound like amazing people and I bet many people are very thankful for their work.

      @@JoeyBriggs My parents started nursing classes up in the bush for those Liberians that were already at that hospital. My dad, a surgeon, said the man giving anesthesia did it perfectly but couldn't read or write. Amazing experiences. We always gave peace corp free medical care and a place to stay when needed. It's nice to know the friendliness of the people is still there and the civil war didn't ruin them
      They were most part really good people. I still call Liberia home. My regret is that as a teen ager i didn't think about bringing back items with me and would love to have me some lapas now.. Lol thank you for your work and all you do.

    J.B; as we say in Liberia, I thank you plenty yaa. I was a student of the earliest Peace Corps Volunteers. That's long before your days as a volunteer in Liberia. It pitys me when I see Liberia's deplorable conditions today. Had our[Liberian] leadership not taken Liberia off course with the U.S. A, Liberia did be far better off today. How regrettable! I'm very much looking forward; for a Liberian President and Administration that will be pro U.S.A.

    Is there a certain amount of time guests can stay with you in country? And does Peace Corps have to approve having visitors?

    • @JoeyBriggs
      @JoeyBriggs  4 роки тому +2

      Hi! Great question I think it kinda depends on the country you're in but I think across the board you can't have visitors in your first 6 months (3 months of training and 3 months at site) Because in this time you're not allowed to do any travel or anything because integrating in you community is top priority. The rest of the time visitors are free to come with prior approval of your supervisors.

      Thanks for your visit and contributions to Liberia. I think it was the first video you talked about the food. Not all Liberians eat lots of pepper. You lived in the countryside and those people are poor and limited to food and housing isn't as good but comfortable for them. If you visited a middle class or rich family than you will know other food and real desserts you wanted. We do have cakes, doughnuts and other desserts. I know you enjoyed my country but you only hung around people that was less fortunate. This is why the peace corps goes to the rural parts of the world to teach them. Please do another visit one day into the city and hang with the middle class or the rich. Yes all the food you talked about you will eat them in a different way and whole different cuisines you never tasted. Elegant homes and beautiful furnitures. You will ride nice cars and enjoy going to see nice schools and churches.
