Woman Living Fully Off-Grid for 2 Years in a Tiny Yurt

  • Beige has been living fully off-grid in Canada in her small yurt for over 2 years. She has no electricity, she uses a wood stove for heat, and to cook. Her tiny home can't be accessed by car so she hauls in all of her spring water, wood, and food on foot.
We spent a couple of days getting to know Beige and we were inspired by her dedication to live a lifestyle that is in line with her values. She works hard every single day to get her food, water, and wood, in addition to helping out on the farm where her yurt is set up, and working as a nature mentor with local children.
She's also incredibly curious and fearless when it comes to trying new things and developing new skills that will help her in her off-grid lifestyle. She grows a lot of her own vegetables, and she's learning about plant medicine - she plants, harvests, and mixes a lot of her own tinctures.
For refrigeration, she has a cooler that sits below the floor so that it touches the ground and stays cool. Her toilet is a hole in the ground outside with a pallet over top of it. She showers at yoga studios in the winter, and she swims in the spring/summer/fall.
For light, she uses candles, and she charges her phone in her car on her way to and from work.
She has her yurt set up on a friend's farm, tucked away in a wooded area that gives her privacy, although a neighbour has complained so she is in the process of deciding if she will get a permit or move the yurt elsewhere.
While living off-grid in her yurt has been an incredible experience for Beige, she also acknowledges that it's a very difficult lifestyle that could be made easier if she could live among other people who are off-grid as well so they could help each other out.
Beige bought her yurt from Groovy Yurts and you can check them out here: groovyyurts.com/

Social media is a menace to society! It's very detrimental to humans socializing - in person socializing, not hiding behind a phone screen or computer. People used to be outside after work or on the weekends because they didn't have video games or the internet. People knew their neighbors and actually talked to one another now they don't even look at you. People are so attached to their phones that you can't even dodge a call and say you were in the shower or something, nope tabs can be kept on your every move! I don't do cell phones myself

But if you live on your land seasonally, most places allow them all as "Temporary Shelters". Though what determines 'temporary' varies wildly by county, state, and HOA.

Hot tip for hauling things to your homestead. I found 2 blue, plastic kiddie pools on the side of the road. I drilled a hole in the top of the rim of each pool then used leftover ropes to make handles. I load them up with whatever I'm hauling and pull them along behind me. I use them to haul firewood out of the woods and now to haul my kerosene can and fill set-up from the garage to the porch. I'm 60 years old now so carrying such heavy things isn't a very good option. The pools slide over everything...mud, snow, rocks...doesn't matter, they glide very smoothly over the landscape. The best part is they require no maintenance. I've been doing this for years. Might help you too. Happy homesteading!! Such a lovely home you've created for yourself and your beautiful dog!!!! 😊

Love how she stated that some of her lifestyle choices have seemed a little harsh, and she's ready for some gentleness. And then she says "We are not designed to live alone." How true. Such a unique and fantastic young woman.

I can't believe someone is bothered by your small overall foot print (on PRIVATE land) and small yurt in the woods! I would bet money that they are jealous of your happiness. I truly believe you will live much longer and better than the miserly and bitter people of this world. God Bless. :)

I was wondering how much money are you talking about with this bet? I think I would like to take you up on that bet. Oh, just talking. I could use the free cash. Silly, they're not jealous. They are consumed with fear of the unknown...that's what causes conflict. Most people get over jealousy through rationalization. I could have used the money peace

So many people are unable to experience the awe this lifestyle emotes. Instead they have only the capacity to point out what THEY would find as the negatives in this lifestyle.
This young woman is healthy and enjoying a lifestyle that inspires her and that’s all that matters.
If this is not a lifestyle you would want, be intelligent and kind and generous and scroll off this video to the next one without the consuming need to write negatively about choices this resourceful person has made.
    Very clever floor support BTW!

The local, provincial and federal government are all communists so the only way to change the laws is to revolt.
We are not even legally allowed to live in our RV's.
Civil war will take of the problem and all the complainers that support the communists.
