(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction - The Rolling Stones (Drum Cover) British Invasion series no. 7

- Drum cover of I Can't Get No) Satisfaction by the British band The Rolling Stones. Released in 1965 and also featured on the American version of Out of Our Heads, giving the Stones their first number one in the US. Keith Richards' throwaway three-note guitar riff -- intended to be replaced by horns -- opens and drives the song.
The song is considered to be one of the all-time greatest rock songs ever recorded. In 2004 Rolling Stone magazine placed "Satisfaction" in the second spot on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, while in 2006 it was added to the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
Recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood, with a different beat and the Gibson Maestro fuzzbox adding sustain to the sound of the guitar riff. Richards envisioned redoing the track later with a horn section playing the riff: "this was just a little sketch, because, to my mind, the fuzz tone was really there to denote what the horns would be doing.". The song's success boosted sales of the Gibson fuzzbox so that the entire available stock sold out by the end of 1965.
Number 7 in the British Invasion cover series.
An exercise in not taking a drum fill. This song was challenging to play without deviating from the steady beat pattern.
Triggered a kit from Addictive Drums ADpak-Retro.

Legend says he is still playing the same beat
I believe it!
Sal, the thing I love about your videos: You just serve the song. All other drummers would have done some crazy fills on this, but as you wrote: the challenge is to keep that beat during the whole song. I'll call you Mr. Metronome :)
Mike Luke
Thank you Mike. You would certainly know being a tasty drummer yourself.
@@rhythmantic Yes!! Drive on, Brother!!!
This is the first time I realized there is just the steady beat and nothing else. Good job on this one!
Just saw them last week in Vegas , they still sound good for a bunch of old guys in their 70s .
the best cover of rollings stones and nice covering of charles watts
Thanks, appreciate that.
Well cover😀👍, Sal D'Amato.
Rest in peace Charles Robert "Charlie" Watts😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🥁
Thank you for showing us how to play all these great classics
Wow! This guy's doing the job!
Thank you, Mr. D'Amato, for showing us what drumming is actually about.
Thanks Roy, much appreciated!
@@rhythmantic Hey, Dude, I enjoy good drumming from people who know how to do it. You're entirely welcome! Drive on, friend!!!
Very well done!
Oh, Yes !
Excellent playing & sound. I LIKE it my friend.
Thank you very much.
Best regards,
Dedstar
Great job Sal at last a excellent drummer who respect Charlie Watts. Thankx for existing
Thank you Denis for such an encouraging comment.
rhythmantic - Sal D'Amato God bless you brother
Not how fast ya go it's how far ya go thanks for hanging around a little Charlie. Nice Sal!
four on th floor..........(& that tambourine!,makes th groove.......... :)
Makes me long for a time past...you really captured the sound, cheers Sal
steady and on spot, well done
Great to know that, thanks for sharing.
I don't know if I could play that sober, as I sang to it drunk so many times.:) Seriously I was amazed you resisted throwing in even a little fill but I get your comment about keeping a steady beat- since I can't yet! Thanks for another great cover. - John
Seasons greetings from us in Stafford UK, for me, you cover the music I have grown up with and love, you have added for me a lot more to my playing.Off to Germany for Christmas.
BIG HAPPY THANK YOU and A GREAT 2014.
Hey Derek, thanks so much and a Merry Christmas to you and your family. I've seen many travelogues of Europe, and Germany is great place to be for the Christmas season, have a blessed time and be sure to record some videos of your trip. Thanks for watching my videos. Greetings from the SF Bay Area CA USA.
It's great you take the time to answer every comment keep doing videos please
Another good one. Like a metronome!
Right on Karen, glad to see you got to hear it.
Great cover;D Nice!
I love this Sal. The first time I heard this was when my Dad came home from work with the Big Hits album and he put it on and I was blown away from the opening chords, I was hooked on the Stones! I kept staring at the lp thinking they were uglier than the Beatles but cooler than the Monkees. You nailed Charlie Watts' rhythm!!
Merry Christmas, again I will tell you that i like and it is the best Cover of this song , I like very much you covers, THANKS
Well thank you and Merry Christmas to you.
nice!! Was just preparing to practice this song and here you are :-)
Excellent!
beautiful
The best Drum cover that there is for this song, pretty easy but still very good. I really like how after the song is over you keeping playing so that you can hear just the drums
Thank you Killian. Yes, that was the intent to isolate the drums at the outro so that other drummers could clearly hear the patter. Simple, yes! Easy to play? No! It is difficult to play this groove for 4 minutes without taking a fill.
rhythmantic - Sal D'Amato I can agree with that! It's physically easy to play but psychologically the whole time it makes me just itching to play a fill! I guess thats what makes a drummer good, because that takes some serious metal control (and physical, for the drummers still learning this groove because it does feel weird at first)
Yes, well stated.
+rhythmantic - Sal D'Amato I'm not a drummer, that's why I am unsure... Why would it be wrong to throw a fill in once in a while, even a simple one? Would it really ruin the feel of the beat?
You could and it would disrupt the groove. Why just this morning in the church worship services I was drumming to an original tune of the worship leader's and it was the very same drum pattern to Satisfaction and I played a number of fills between the verses, choruses and instrumental sections and it worked very well to set up those sections.. However, for this cover, I wanted to play it like Charlie did.
great cover
Great job as usual, was pretty easy and consistent, keep on making these videos, you inspire me greatly
Very good drumming
Thanks doc!
Awesome cover
Hey hey hey, even I can play that. :) That's a study in restraint. Thanks, Sal.
I love it !!!!! Muito bom.
This cover and what I wrote in the video's description answer your question. But don't take my word for it, listen to the record. But hey, you don't have to play it like the record.
BECAUSE STILL PLAYING AT THE END
That looks hard, but sounds great. Nice.
It could be challenging playing a steady straight beat without taking a drum fill.
Thanks Andreas. As for Ratings, I don't share my covers to be "Liked" or "Disliked", but for the love of the drumming and music. If I received royalties for Likes and/or was given an explanation for the Dislikes, I would turn it on. Thanks for checking out the cover.
Very awesome cover, Sal! ;)
This is a very easy song to play, but it is always a lot of fun!
Actually it's not easy playing a straight beat pattern without getting ants in one's pants and deviating from the groove by playing a drum fill.
That's an awesome drum cover. I love The Rolling Stones and Satisfaction's one of my favourite songs by them. I noticed you like the same music taste as me because I love bands like The Beatles, The Doors, Led Zeppelin and also singers like Hendrix. I have a Roland drum kit too because I'm a drummer. Keep up the great work! Look forward to hearing more. :)
James Ord
Thank you for viewing the cover and you'll find covers on my channel of those bands you cited of that period.
@@rhythmantic No Problem. I love that period. 60s and 70s are one of my favourite times for music. :) What's your favourite Rolling Stones song? My favourite two are Satisfaction and Paint It Black. Also I love Gimme Shelter on the Let It Bleed album.
thanks for sharing rhythmantic - Sal D'Amato
yan k
Thank you for viewing it.
Hearing this as a 15 year old kid and the tonal impact of the soundscape is the essence of this song and what I recall today. More importantly, I have finally scrutinized the drum track and discovered there isn't a snare doubling up the tambourine part on beat 3 as drummers in cover bar bands usually play it and I have played as well. Don't hear Dancing In the Streets, if it's there it's highly disguised like a good ripoff should be. If anything the beat & tempo is more like "Nowhere to Run".
Ryth - The Charlie Watts special - hes a jazz drummer ya know ;). You are a KIND man.
Considering this song is in the top 5 R&R of all times the riff is "Dancing in the streets" there's no memorable ANYTHING in this song except that Mick became "MICK JAGGER" with his iconic vocals/phrasing and clever accent. The hero of this song was the engineer who overloaded the gain on the guitar. still you listen to it and "you gotta move like Jagger"
From the look on your face, it took some restraint to just play the song without any special drum fills....you were about to laugh I think. Great job as usual Sal!
Solid
Sure, and thank you for watching them.
cool! :)
Thanks John.
mickavellian my man, you are very diligent.
Thanks so much.
Thanks a lot. I triggered a kit from Addictive Drums ADpak-Retro. It's Ludwig Supraphonic snare with a Ludwig Blue Oyster Pearl kick drum and either Zildjian, Sabian or Paiste hi-hats. Thanks for checking it out.
You're the one!
Thank you. I love how the sound of my snare matched that on the record. It was a 14x6.5" Ludwig Supraphonic snare and one Charlie may have used.
Definitely not a easy song to play at all brilliant cover sal 😊
Yea, well I thought it would be until I started playing it. It's probably easier to play on an acoustic kit.
Yeah your right I have both and it is easier
But is difficult playing the same beat through the whole song
Thank you Lea.
Good detective work there mickavellian.
There IS a Nowhere to Run in there ! Strange Berry Gordy didn't ask for some money .. ! :)
Well I just followed your lead :)
It looks like so simple to play this song for drum cover
alvin wijaya
It's deceptively simple. It's not an easy task to keep a good feeling groove and good time from beginning to end and do it without taking a fill.
It’s easy on guitar too
Hey Dicedrum, thanks for stopping by.
Thanks my friend.
Yea I didn't either until I listened carefully before covering it. Thanks for viewing it.
Oh yea, this was a good one for Mick. Yea I did read that tale of Keith and the snoring, regardless, to my ears it has a lot more in common with Nowhere To Run. Check out the beat, I used to play this in the clubs like the other drummers, with two 8ths on beat 3, it's not bad, but it flows better with straight 4s on the snare.
Very helpful. Thanks. Though my elbows are a bit numb now!
+Julie Ant Thanks
Excelente Batero no te olvides de Don't you forget about me - Simple Minds hace tiempo te la pedi... :)
Thanks
As you know Keith claims he dreamt the son turned on a tape recorder and it was 2 minutes of humming and the rest him snoring . The intro was NOT in the dream and he admits he just ripped off "dancing in the streets "I" do hear it The first five notes take me straight into it. When I heard it the first time I was not listening for craftsmanship just the old "good beat & you can dance to it" but Jagger's voice somehow made an impact. Now I gotta go and dissect the drum track ! :)
Yea, thanks.
Harder than you think. 👀
Gosh, what do you know about that?! I love when that happens. Thanks for checking it out.
That's harder then you think for long time!! Lol
Wonderful. How 'bout Jumpin' Jack Flash?
LOL this is probably one of the most difficult song to play ''like the record" simply because as a drummer you get bored playing the exact same beat with no fill, no frill, and no change for almost 4 minutes. But as you say in your text that is a good exercise in restrain and control. There are other early Rolling Stone songs that have a similar simplistic approach (I dont mean this pejoratively), Get Off Of My Cloud, Jumping Jack Flash, for instance have an almost boringly repetitive pattern with little changes throughout the song, but i think this was designed to create an hypnotic feeling and it succeeds very well in doing this IMHO.
Yes, it's just as you said except that if one is playing for the song with feeling and groove it is not "boring". I think of this beat as the Motown beat of the same period, the 60s.
Very well done. Have you ever considered mixing the uploaded video with your drums on one side and everything else on the other? It would be great for bands that are drummer-less (but looking…)
No I haven’t because I would lose the opportunity to sell my drum track performance.
Thanks for your observation. I sometimes envy those who don't answer comments at all, because if I didn't, I'd have more time to drum. These are drummers or others that I refer to as "big shots", you know, those folks with literally 100s of thousands of views within a week of uploading a video, those with 10s of thousands of subscribers. However, You Tube is not just about sharing the love of the music and the drumming, it's about people, it's a community of people, I like to share & relate..
I love this series! This song introduced me to the Rolling Stones. Great job again; how many videos do you plan on posting under this series?
Thanks for getting back to me. I would love to video me playing, but I use ProTools interface with Audacity & need to sync with my wifes ipad? I have a DTX 500 Yamaha Drum Kit Electronic. If you have any suggestions I would love the help. Don't want to spend a fortune on a video camera. Would love your help. Thanks!
Great work - making the groove look effortless is a real art. Did you get the Snare sound "out of the box" with your VDrums or is it an add in? Thanks for the good work !
Nice to cover Charlie Watts.
*****
Watts was the drummer from the very start. Brian was the rhythm guitar player who also played sitar, zither, and other exotic stringed instruments.
I do hear snare and tambourine on 3 followed by snare and two 8th on tambourine. Which is clever otherwise the drums would've been a total fail. BTW Wyman did a great job .
Thanks. I covered that one already. You find it on my channel page or just Google it.
Thanks! It works Great for the sound! But I NEED ONE TO GET THE SOUND FROM THE INTERFACE TO THE VIDEO?
Hi, i was looking for a drum cover video of this song and i saw yours. I knew the beat was very..."steady" but is it really just keeping that beat going. No fill, no bbrakes, no change? Just that hi-hat variation occasioanlly and that's all? I find it too wasy xD
Nice sounding Drums & Nice cover. How do you get so many views? I have around 210 Drum Covers.
Please, could you post the sheet music of the drums? Thank you in advance.
candreel
There wasn't a chart used - it was done from memory. I grew up with this tune, it's such a simple beat all the way through. If there was a chart there's no way to upload it to UA-cam. Thank you for viewing the video, good day.
Most discussions of a "four on the floor" beat refer to 70s disco. Why not this? Second question: isn't there a Motown or Stax-Volt precedent for this beat? I'm trying to track one down.
1960s Motown: there are plenty examples. Check out the songs of The Supremes, for example: "Stop In The Name Of Love"; "You Keep Me Hanging On"; "Come See About Me", etc.
How do you do a drum cover without copyright strike?
I haven't gotten a Strike since 2009. The common notice is a Copyright one where YT recognizes the content belongs to another but allows it to be visible while the copyright owner makes money on the video. However, far worse is having one's videos Blocked as I have all of my 160+ Beatles and about 12 of Jimi Hendrix covers blocked. Now that's a drag!!!
@@rhythmantic thanks
Sal...What snare drum # are you using? Any adjustments to it? Thanks!
Robert Martino
Hi Robert, I'm triggering a kit from ADpak-Retro from addictive drums.
@@rhythmantic thanks! Didn't sound like one of the pre-defined kits.
But what a about the tambourine part? is that just an add in?
Appearances are often deceptive. Keeping a steady beat without deviating from it without a drum fill of any kind is challenging.
Can you drum. Everybody out there. from NEW?
What kit you use

Is there a bass drum?
Yes! Four-on-the-floor.
@@rhythmantic so you mean every beat? Thanks
Thanks. I just play skillfully and with authority; have a quality audio mix; and video record my performance - you should try it, people want to see you drumming, that's what YT is all about - the visual. I noticed in the few videos I saw of yours that you're not in them.
Pro Tools w/Audacity?! That's odd. I used to work at Digidesign, developer of PTs. You could get a decent video cam under $500.
Yea, all these new apps. I need to get an iPhone.
Very easy best, but my arm went dead afterwards
Difficile ,de ne pas envoyer ,sur les cymbales !!
If I understand properly, I think you're referring to the matter of not taking any fills and/or crashing any cymbals - then yes, it is a challenge indeed.
fills are overrated anyway, great precision as always.
motorik
Okay!!!…😱
