- Since 1979, I have been archiving many of America's best personalities on video. My site is called: www.vuolovideo.com and this video tribute to the consummate mid-day personality for more than 36 years on New York's WCBS-FM shows this genuinely nice man who was very popular in the greater NYC area. I shot these video airchecks in November 1987 and the second one ten years later in July 1997. See why Bill Brown was one of a kind. He will surely be missed.

Bill was the anchor jock to those meteoric guys who worked the airwaves at CBS-FM during the Progressive format and later into the Oldies. Every show was flawless and so tight. He was the consummate professional and a terrific person.
We'll miss the great Bill Brown.

I used to listen to him in work. I loved his lunchtime "Brown Bag".
A voice that will always be remembered..you knew you were in NY when you heard Bill Brown..what a legend..He reminds me of Summertime in NY..RIP..🎶💞

I remember listening to WCB-FM as a teenager back in the 1970s, especially the doowop shop with Don K Reid on Sunday evenings - and before that, Norm N Nite's Night Train Show! Back when oldies meant songs from the 50s and 60s - now, oldie stations say.. lets go WAY back to ... 1990 with this song! My! How we've gotten old! :)

It was through You Tube when I first learned about Ron Lundy's passing, and now it's with this clip that I discover this bad news about Bill Brown. I left home in NJ several yrs ago for a job in Chicago... without question, there is nothing that compares to NYC, and that certainly goes for its radio legends. Another one of those great voices has gone silent. Many thanks for this amazing clip.

This station is not the same anymore. Bill Brown was a great voice to hear in the afternoons. It is a shame, he probably would have been on the air another few years had the Jack incident not occured

I am really sad to hear this...Brown was the friend of a friend and in the late 80's/early 90's I got many a lunch-time dedication from him..and finally got to meet him months later at the friend's bar. A great guy.

@@richstronge7256 Agree 100%.They even played memorable early rock 'n roll classics, like 'Sh- boom' by the Chords, and early standard , and doo- wop hits, like 'Little things mean a lot' and 'Sunday kind of love'
I miss it, as well. I grew up on my parent's music and that era of CBS FM, unfortunately, the listening audience is no longer there to keep it a bankable, top 5 station. The 80s and 90s music represents the same nostalgia to Gen X and early millennials that the 50s to 70s music did for Baby Boomers 20 years ago.
Harry, Brucie, Dan, Bill & Ron were throwbacks for them as DJs, the way Scott Shannon, Race Taylor, Joe Causi, Bill Lee, etc are to those who listened to top 40 radio in the 80s - 2000s. Times changed and CBS went with them. That's why they have remained competitive in a struggling industry.
Awesome tribute! I got a couple of chills watching it. Back in the early 90's I was fresh out of high school and perusing a career in radio I was offered a job a CBS-FM. With the passing of Ron Lundy and now Bill, I find myself lamenting the opportunity I passed up (family told me not to take it and goto college instead) to have worked with the legends of NY radio. Once again great tribute!!!! RIP Bill.......

Bill Brown. This guy could read a phone book (you remember those?), and I would listen to him all day. Just look at the way he works the control board! Unreal. Damn shame that he and his wonderful voice are gone. Miss him very much.

I loved his Brownbag segment, where he'd read a listener's music- related letter idea, like,songs that mention a day of the week; Songs repeating Baa in the lyrics; Songs that feature a color,etc. This is the one I sent in in 1994; Songs whose lyrics begin with the words, 'When the'. The 5 songs that were played: 1- My prayer. 2- That's amore. 3- Aquarius. 4- Somebody to love. 5- Stand by me.

I still remember my 2 "Brown Bag Lunch Special" suggestions which were selected and used on the air over the years! I won gift certificates for Red Lobster, CBS-FM shirts, and other cool things!

Another great one gone. Started listening to Bill on WOR-FM in New York, before he went over to WCBS-FM.

I used to listen to Bill Brown all the time and I loved it so much when he did middays following Ron Lundy. My favorite segment is the "Brown Bag". I missed him very much. And speaking of that, June 3rd will mark the 10th anniversary of the day Bill Brown did his final regular show on WCBS-FM after 35 years. The last song that he played was "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass which brought his show to close. After that, the station flipped to "Jack".
The WCBS F.M. of the 90's, is but a pleasant and pleasurable memory, to be treasured.
WCBS has been my whole life, practically...with WABC in the early days. So much fun to hear this! Thank you for posting!

I worked with Bill at CBS FM as a college intern around 1979. He commuted from his home at Lake Hopatcong, NJ, which is no short ride to NYC. He was a consummate pro in every sense of the word. Bill will certainly be missed, and the new CBS FM is not the same as what it once was. God speed, Bill.

I didn't know about Bill Brown at CBS-FM. He was really good! Thanks to whomever posted this, my sympathies go to his family. I think Scott Shannon works there, as Race Taylor at WPLJ told me Cumulus made a decision to let Scott go, but Scott Shannon is big time. Im younger than some of these great guys, I heard Scott went to WCBS-FM, when they pulled the plug on the "Jack FM" Music Format. My Bill live in our hearts as one of the "Good Guys'!
To listen to WCBS FM now is not the same no more. I was listening to WCBS the other day and remembering. It's truly sad. Just memories now that was a great radio station with great DJ's, all just being the best in their field.

I miss Bill as well as Dan Ingram, who once called me and left a message on my answering machine one Saturday afternoon in the 90s. It was after I had sent him an email. I went out shortly after and unfortunately missed his call.
@samspinchat Bill may not have had the fame of the "big four" (Harry, Ron Dan and Brucie), but Bill in many ways was THE foundation of 101.1 since he literally was there from beginning (October 1969) to end (June 2005), spanning CBS-FM entire first life with live air personalities.
Harry, Ron, Dan, and Brucie were all at WABC 770 AM until the music die there. WABC was a power house.
Bill Brown Was On WCBS-FM From 12:00PM-3:00PM, Monday-Friday.
The Brown Bag Lunchtime Special was 5 songs in a row that all fit a certain theme, often created by listeners. This was my "Wizard of Oz" Brown Bag which was used, with 5 characters from the movie. 1- The Lion Sleeps Tonight by the Tokens 2- Tin Man by America 3- Ding Ding the Witch is Dead by Fifth Estate. 4- Dorothy by the Hi-Fives 5- The Wizard of Love by The Ly-Dells.

I'm guessing the November 1987 was Nov. 12, since that was the day after a very early season snowstorm hit the northeast.

it was Nov 23, 1987, he says it at 2:31; "color it 23 Nov 1987". Like another commenter said, with Bill Brown you had to pay attention! Delivery was sleek and smooth and more than a few jokes and double entendres can be heard .....one of the greats!

How great a job is that; Playing all those oldies, but goodies, not having to get made up or dressed up, being able to say swear words, have foods delivered to the station, and smoke.
I never knew this guy and dont even live in the states but am interested in old new york city radio stations as i heard them in the movies. The way this guy talks with his entire body is really interesting. Was he on the spectrum?

Raymond, the problem with playing hits from 1955 is:
1. Assuming the audiences from that error were say in their teens in 1955, that would put them near 80 years of age today. Many of these audiences are either dead or on heavens door step now.
2. Those demo's are not buying new cars, new lawn mowers, going to night clubs, gyms, etc., and are unattractive to Madison Avenue ad agencies. Therefore, the station could not successfully sell advertising to core buying audiences.
3. Assuming CBS FM played music from as far back as 1955 today in 2015, the station would be alienating younger audiences, and the audience turn out would be tragic.
Like it or not, "oldies" today are considered select tunes (Beatles) from the 1960's, certainly the 1970's and the 1980's. 1950's music is simply no longer relevant. Is it good music, YES! Is it relevant, NO!

IM A PROGRAM DIRECTOR.(bill brown......a hell of a good guy).over used his voice-past his natural tones.)he had no TRUE reality on how the vocal chords work.(on the air......he was a friendly sounding guy).filled with cliche-time and temp verbal nothingnessES.(stale for the most part).if he had been as creatively talented.....as the 1970s KFRC on air jocks.THEN yes he would have been a true legend.(he never showed KFRC on air jock-TYPE OF-UNREAL TALENT).SO HES nothing more then a here and there FLASHY VOCAL TONED good guy.WITHOUT being on the good guys station.(yet I will admit.......as horrifically AWFUL the oldies/top 40/CHR jocks are 98 % of THEM TODAY are talentless as hell.BILL WAS far superior then the ON AIR JOCKS of today.(again.bill brown a MOSTLY on air NOTHING.who could have been something VERY SPECIAL for eternities sake.(your replies are welcomed).
