Born and bred New Zealander here! So sorry to hear about that residency nightmare, was complaining to a friend today about how impossible it is for her partner to get a residency and it feels like they just pick names out of a hat like the hunger games. Hope it works out better soon, we’re due for a change :)
To me the worst part is that no bands come to Welly. Like I live in the capital but I still have to drive for like 12 hours to get to aukland to see Megadeth
Agree about unhealthy food being cheap and good food being expensive. That is a serious problem. The supermarkets are playing a dangerous game overcharging for things. But there is hope. They have recently changed a lot of the rules around supermarkets to make it much easier for new supermarkets brands enter NZ. So we should get more competition going forward which should lower prices.
I think the main reason for the email response thing is man power. Most businesses in New Zealand operate on "just enough" staff. Also known as 3 people forced to do the work of 10
mad respect for opening up bro! I completely agree with you New Zealand does have some cons which you have addressed very well! Because of your honesty and critical feedback you are one of the best content creators New Zealand has in my POI :) Cheers buddy!
Transferring money is actually much better than it used to be, if you are the same bank the money will be received instantly any day of the week. However payments between different banks have a 1-3 hour delay depending on the bank during weekdays. But if you transfer between different banks on the weekend the money won’t be processed until the following Monday. That’s the only time payments can take multiple days.
Absolutely, I lived in the US and using apps like Zelle and Cashapp is a pain in the ass and low security. Most people that come to NZ love the fact you can bank to bank transfer which you definitely can't do in the US
Totally agree on the fruit and vege prices! I have to say though - the expensive alcohol thing is not necessarily a bad thing. With our tendency towards being a binge drinking culture and all the societal and health woes associated with that, we really don't need alcohol to be any cheaper.
Yeah, exactly my thoughts. Being a Kiwi, I can say one of our largest downfalls is how drinking is such a large part of our culture. Most people have already had their first beer by the age of like 12.
What pisses me off about the Govt, they let these billionaires into the country, give them an easy way to citizenship, but the money they pay, doesn't trickle down to the public. They say they will reuse it for infrastructure, but we never see it.
I came to NZ from the UK nearly 20 years ago now. Even then, my employer had to prove they could not find a Kiwi to do the job and yes, then the expensive medicals, authentication of credentials, police check and admin fees. All happened again 5 years later when I applied for Citizenship but it was worth it. Keep at it.
Nelsonian here. I agree with all you points, especially the cost of fresh fruit and veges, let alone dairy products too despite being one of the biggest exporters of dairy. One of the biggest factors in this is our main supermarkets are owned by two companies, both Australian based, and they mark up prices here big time compared to Australian prices. Also I know some banks transactions are instant like Kiwibank-to-Kiwibank but I'm not sure about other banks. I also liked my time in Christchurch and Auckland exactly because not every one knew who you were by one or two degrees of separation unlike Nelson especially 😂 Also being a Formula 1 fan is tough having most races around 2 or 3am on a Monday morning.
The big problem is that other countries exclude fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat from GST. NZ doesn't, so it's instantly 15% more expensive - without even factoring in transport and logistics.
From a NZ born person, motivated skilled people need to be given a good avenue to be able to stay. NZ needs more good people that want to make it the best place possible, sadly the bureaucrats seem to want to make it as difficult as possible.
I totally agree with so much of this. I really wish we had more international artists come to NZ too but I feel like we are always an add on to their Australian tour, like O let's nip over to Auckland. We do however have so many amazing talented artists right here, check out Seth Haapu, Louis Baker, Benee, Kimbra, Brooke Fraser, Stan Walker, Luke Thompson, Hollie Smith. Sorry to hear about your visa situation, that is so tough on you, I wish things were easier.
I totally agree with you. International artists do for the most part add one or 2 shows in NZ to the Australian league of their tour. It is easier for them to do that because of the costs of shipping equipment from the West island to the North Island. I used to sell travel in the UK and it was common for UK citizens to take 2 or 3 weeks holiday to come to Australia. In that they'd include 3 days to "Do New Zealand". I would tell them to come back and let me how they got on. Most would say that they could have spent the whole holiday in NZ. As the distances to travel between sites here is so short in comparison to Australia.
The problem with acts for Welly is there isn't usually a suitable venue. Smaller acts can go to Meow, Valhalla or San Fran. Bigger acts either take the loss and go to those venues or play at the Caketin and have the acoustics sound horrible since it's open air. Tsb arena or Micheal Fowler center doesn't cut it a lot of the time either
It's instant here in Australia as well,if they are with the same bank, can do it through mobile numbers. The good thing about NZ banking,if you lose your debit card, you can get another one over the counter straight away, for 15 bucks. You have to wait 3 weeks for a new one here in Australia.
New card is free . I needed and replaced mine in three minutes . Magnetic strip was coming off . New card tried and confirmed to be working immediately in the banks ATM upon being issued . No charge , no fee , just Brilliance .
Hey Curls. I read through the comments, don't let the negative people affect your love for this wonderful country. All your points are valid and appreciate that you take the time to point them out. I enjoy watching your video's, especially when you try the different things we have down here. How about trying some different beers, I'm sure you will get volunteers to taste test with you (I'm in). Side note, have you had a Tim Tam slam yet?
As a kiwi who travels, I agree with you on most things. But got to add to it. Born and bred kiwis are very passive aggressive, when I am o/seas I avoid kiwis like the plague, they are so self righteous particularly the female of the species. If you are white it seems particuly hard to get residency. I find that our frozen veg are cheaper than the other countries I visit. But the worst thing is, you cannot go out and have an enjoyable night with your mates, alcohol prices are at a ridiculous level, and the drink drive rules are so draconian and public transport at nighttime is almost non existent
I hear your pain bro, I've been living here for 10 years now. I agree with most of your points and have some others myself. Beautiful country though, it's my home now.
The local strawberry season is just beginning (it’s not quite hot enough yet), and will be in full bloom by Christmas Day. Same with asparagus, which has a very short season until Christmas.
Don't know where do you shop for your fruit, I know good foid is expensive, but I've paid $4.00 a punnet for strawberries in Countdown Auckland last week!
The visa situation is a complete nightmare. We need people coming here that are going to enjoy the country and work and we make it so hard. I hope you get your visa sorted out and can stay. Even getting a holiday visa can be thousands of dollars depending on which country you are from. Having such a small population we are dependent on external labour and migration. The Government really needs to make that easier. I was born here and I’ve travelled the world from here and I’ve lived in London as well and I agree with all of your points. Although I’ve found getting to Europe from here isn’t as expensive with Emirates and other Middle East airlines than it is with Air Nz and others. Although it’s still a lot more than if we were based in London. Used to be able to get a round the world ticket for 650 quid.
I never knew it was so tough for you guys to get visas here in our country! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. We all do want you here. You are very correct about everything on this list! Spot on!
I totally feel you on the resident visa application! I’m currently anxiously waiting for my outcome. Did you look at company sponsorship or the skilled migrant option as alternatives?
Awesome video as always mate. I was just in South East Asia and I couldn't believe the ease of transferring money, the locals just scanned each others QR codes, brilliant stuff. The entertainment thing is tough coming from Christchurch, some artists such as Bruce Springsteen made a point of coming here after the quakes and we love him for that, the vast majority of big acts are booked by promoters into Dunedin if they come to the South Island at all! However, we do get a decent amount of awesome medium size venue artists so not all is lost. Even the international rugby is sad, we've had one men's Test Match since 2016(!), and we weren't given any games of the Women's World Cup despite being the cradle of women's rugby in NZ (probably due to the tournament being planned with COVID in mind). The visa situation is crook, my NZ Citizen aunt married a Brit, very high performing worker, and has kids with him, the difficulties he had with coming here was a joke, then you consider so many people come here through family unification programmes and are not only unproductive but later can receive the pension having paid not one cent in. Very weird.
Not even sure how I stumbled over your channel, but quite interesting seeing feedback about your own country. No country is perfect that is for sure. Glad you did it in a good way. Interesting about the banking situation, I thought UK banking was miles behind, but a long time since I have been to the UK, they obviously caught up and passed us in some areas. Good video. I think its fair to limit the amount of freedom campers coming into NZ and target people that will pump more $$ into the economy, we had the balance wrong previously - not saying that is you.
NZ has much better, faster internet connections then Australia,so I think maybe it's just people being tardy. As far as drinking, it's cheaper to buy them at the supermarket, here in Australia, it's ridiculously expensive.
The MOST IMPORTANT "Job" in NZ is SABOTAGING each other 24 hours a day some overseas people tell us AND they are right NZ has dropped from 3rd HIGHTEST income per head of Population in the 1950's to NOW 33rd!!!!! LOWEST in the world. Enjoy U R NZ third world dump
I'm a big Arsenal fan mate and its even harder to follow in Australia. At the moment it's not easy to travel around aus I live and work in the northern territory and some times I have to go from darwin to Sydney to brisbane to get home on the sunshine coast.
In one street in Auckland, Lincon Road. There are 50+ Fast Food joints within 1 meter of each other. Some areas have 2 McDonalds within 10 meters, its very easy to get unhealthy on cheap junkfood here unfortunately.
Hi Curls, I am a proud, born/raised New Zealander, who has traveled extensively around the World. Thanks for not being obnoxious like some people are on Social Media "because they have a Platform". I do understand your annoyances. A few things, with regards to Banks etc - If the other party has a different Bank to you, the transfer takes 2 hours (this is set by the Banks - most are Australian owned & they rip off New Zealanders with insane profits (an average of well over $1 Billion per year), yet deliver poor service & extortionate Interest Rates. However, if both parties have the same Bank, the transfer is INSTANT. This is not a big deal, to me anyways. RE: Emails - that is entirely subjective & dependent on many factors, such as the work ethic of any given individual, the company they work for, their type of job, their position in that company, their workload, so many factors ...... Alcohol cost, I'm sweet I don't drink Alcohol myself, nor do I smoke anything, it saves loads of $$ for Concerts etc... Comparing New Zealand to Australia is ridiculous, with regards to Wages, it should always be like for like & this comparison is completely unfair. Australia has nearly 25 Million people, to our 5 Million. They have massive Companies that employ large amounts of people & they collectively pay much more tax, which results in better wages, especially for Health Workers & other Government workers. A comparison should never be made like this, because it's entirely unfair to a country the size of New Zealand, with our small population. Having said that, we do bloody well as a whole & we punch above our weight in many many different things. Many different Sports for one. I love this country with all my heart & soul & I wouldn't live anywhere else & certainly not Australia.
My partner and I have found our salaries to be greater than what we were able to achieve in the UK, the work life balance is better, and the job stability has been more secure than during the period between 2000 and 2009 when we left. As for the cost of vegetables, I know they are expensive in the supermarket following a number of weather events, but try the veggie retailers attached to the growers, they provide much better value, it can't only be Christchurch that have these.
Regarding immigration, you can thank the 2008 national lead government for making it impossible to move here. With John Key as PM, he let the immigration flood gates open and so many people immigrated here in such a short space of time that it has caused the current housing crisis that they never admitted to. Kinda like how the current minister of health is refusing to admit we're in the grips of a health crisis. As a result of the mass immigration 10 years ago NZ has not managed to catch up with infrastructure. Hence why only high demand professionals like doctors get prioritised. Why they haven't opened a fast track for nurses just beggers belief. I'm unsatisfied with most major political parties in New Zealand. Best of luck getting your visa.
What he said! Visa even more expensive now, my experience even more challenging even tho I've been in a primary industry (food factory engineer) for 5 years, paid a fortune in fees, twice, and have my family here. We're from South Africa, so the crime wave over the past year is concerning too.
Lol as a born and bred kiwi I can agree with you. Luckily for the Saturday morning thing if it's not construction it's lawnmowers , and for me living deep rural it's helicopters at 6am or earlier spraying orchards. I don't drink now but I feel yah with the price of drinking out. Anyways best of luck with your visa ma dude..my brother in law literally went through the same thing as you but got his a couple of years ago after many headaches and almost been deported. The email thing is annoying asf trust me I know that all to well..
I hope you get your visa issues sorted out. I have a Japanese spouse and came back to NZ a few years ago. It was bureaucratic to get her and my daughter's visa, but it wasn't difficult once the forms were all filled in correctly. I have some UK friends that want to go back to the UK after living abroad, with their foreign wife, and can't because their non-UK spouse didn't have proof of earnings.
When I was in UK I found the banking system totally archaic and well behind NZ standard. I recall wanting to withdraw 5 quid from my account to buy some lunch, I was at a different branch of my bank, approximately 11 miles away... I was told they had to "send a fax" to the branch where my account was...then wait for a reply...then I had to pay a fee of 3 quid to complete the transaction... I went hungry.... This was in the mid 90's, I'm assuming the system has been improved somewhat since then..?
I would have asked the bank staff " if any of them are having lunch today and would they split some " " especially the bank manager " " then ask the bank manager would he phone your branch that holds your accounts , to get your lunch money " " why does he , she have a job ? "
@@boboften9952 It was standard banking procedure there at that time...I also recall banking cash at my local branch....then realized I didn't keep any for myself so asked to withdraw a few pounds for "pocket money"...not allowed until the "cash had cleared "...!!! What..? Didn't realize cash could "bounce" but I think they had to wait for the deposit transaction to be processed before any withdrawal could take place...I recall somewhat sarcastically asking if they still used an abacus....lol
All relevant points here. Good of you to point them out. Tho i will point out to become a PR in oz is WAY more expensive for a kiwi so ive heard. Which is why im been in oz for almost 20yrs and not done it yet
All your points are pretty spot on. But don't feel embarrassed about having to say to your boss you are waiting for a response from someone, that's normal! Unless you have had a bit of a windfall dont even bother eating out of season, never mind though, they say its good for you and the planet :D Im really sorry to hear about your visa woes. You are right, its madness that one of our biggest problems is that we dont have enough workers yet we dont let anybody in!
Sorry to hear that it is so hard to be a resident in our country but I think in the past people have just used residency here as a stepping stone to get to Australia , so that hasn’t helped , doesn’t excuse the cost though
It's funny how you said transferring money is a bit tricky when another from America living in NZ not England like yourself said transferring money is easy and quick, so must depend which country your from to how difficult/quick it is. Good luck in staying in NZ, I hope you get it all sorted.
We moved to NZ from the UK in 2015 and was surprised by the way you could transfer money quickly and easily to others to pay bills etc. Could you do that in the UK then? If so it passed me by 😅 I do hope you get your visa. We were sponsored to come here by our son who came here in 2008 on a residency visa. He’s a nurse. We have all recently been granted citizenship so don’t give up. My son always said what he missed most about the UK were the 3 F’s Family, Friends and Football. As we’re here now and his brother is in Canada the first F isn’t an issue!
You missed my issue living here. How long it takes to ship anything in. And the fact that sometimes companies won't ship to NZ. And the ridiculous shipping charges some online providers charge. Sometimes it costs more in shipping charges for a even a small package than what you are buying. With email responses, especially for work, getting an answer from the Northern Hemisphere on something urgent takes at least 12 hours. And by the time you have woken up and read it it can be another 12 hours. So, sorting out a situation can take a few days.
Kiwi from Christchurch here. I'm surprised at the money transfer thing (I usually find it very fast) but I agree with the rest, though I'm older and rarely go out. On the other hand, New Zealand is one of the very few countries where you can legally distill alcohol for drinking!
I’m pretty sure I’ve flown to Thailand direct from Auckland before. It’s just that COVID had seen many many flights from nz cancelled and the ones remaining were convoluted. And living in wellington adds that extra leg for your trip.
I agree, residency is so hard to get. I never realised this till recently, as it didn't matter to me, given I'm a Kiwi, born to English parents who moved to NZ in 1959. It was so easy for my parents in those days. They just turned up and when asked what their plans were, they said, live in NZ, and I don't think they blinked an eyelid. Why they were charging you so much to get that residency, I don't know. I think the attitude is reflected in the trouble to attract Health workers like Nurses to NZ. There's a certain level of distrust, which I think is a big put off to those overseas. It's a shame, as I think NZ is a wonderful country, and I miss it, and we need those skilled people to make the country even better to live in. I live in London, and know exactly what you're talking about when you say you're happier in NZ, after 7 years here in London, remembering what it was like in NZ. I hate winter in the UK even more than winter in NZ. It is so expensive to fly to and from NZ and it's going to get worse, sadly.
NZ is great born and breed here but I understand qhere you are coming from. I am on a sickness benefit, and it would be helpful to eat healthy to help recover and keep well, but a lot of the time eating very healthy is just too expensive. I live next door to a construction site for a large commercial building that is being built.... I can agree about the construction noise thing. Especially if it is that machine that is loud and also vibrates the ear drums in a way that is impossible to ignore or sleep through or even watch TV while happening. Gahhhhhhhhh! I just want sleep on the weekend at least! Haha. I am glad you still like it here anyway! Another great video btw. 😊
Me and my gf are with the sane bank. I hadn't considered that, and it would be scary to just lose access to money for a couple of days, just waiting for the banks systems to do their job. I think I would just use cash if I had to so that, if possible.
I agree about the construction point. I don't see why it should be allowed on Saturday or Sunday. And yeah. I'm a Man United fan so, I have to drag myself up at 5am quite a lot. If it's on earlier than that I just don't bother!
Yes the new immigration settings are a beaurocratic nightmare. If you can get a permanent job that's on the green list you will automatically get permanent residency (and your employer should support you by paying the fee). Alternatively if you can score a permanent highly paid role (upward of $120k) with an accredited employer you will be granted residency in two years.
thanks for posting, picked up on the low salary/income, but you didn't mention NZ exchange rate, another killer when buying anything from overseas, like everything!
At least they got rid of cheques but looks like interbank money transfers are only a little bit faster. In the UK its like... instantaneous. In NZ though, when you open a bank account, its a very personal service; they lay out the red carpet, unlike the UK.
Kia ora, @kiwiamericans make content on moving to Nz, check her out if you haven't already maybe you'd be able to find something in her videos to help. Hope it all works out for you in the end.
I left NZ in 2005, best move ever. Fruit, veggies, housing and alcohol all used to be cheap. I went to the UK in 2003 and couldn't believe the prices there! The NZ govt does not want you because you are an Anglo Saxon and from a western country.
Yup, agree with food issues. Im a single person who only eats predominantly vegetarian meals (not a big fan of meat.) My groceries today (all food, no toiletries or cleaning products needed this week) cost me $170
Living in Wellington must have to be the most depressing place to live in NZ. I’m impressed you love this place so much.. imagine if you moved North! 😆😂😅🫶
Totally agree bro, been in Wellington for 3 decades. Fruit and vegetables are insanely expensive...this didn't used to be the case. But I'll keep my political rant in check. I use the local fruit and veg markets on Saturday (Newtown School) or Sunday (waterfront). Much better prices than supermarkets!
So annoying about acts not coming to ChCh. One of my fav 90's English bands Ride is playing in Auckland only in a few weeks. And air fares are $500 return! Altho the Killers did play in ChCh last night so it's not all bad.
Point 3, getting fruit & veg out of season... I should point out that unlike the UK, NZ is not close to any of the markets that we import from. Contrast that with the UK where goods can come in via refrigerated truck. Further, NZ is not a trans-shipping port meaning that ships coming here are only coming to NZ (as opposed to being a part of a route elsewhere). For these reasons, anything imported (and there's a lot of it) will always be expensive. Cost conscious locals get around this by buying in season. That said, there's always that juicy ripe overpriced mango that you've just got to have.
I've lived here my whole life and I can confidently say the worst thing about living here is the bloody hole in the roof. As someone with Voldemort level paleness trying to avoid the inevitably of skin cancer every summer is a nightmare.
You shouldn't, I used to process the engineering aspects of resource consents where I routinely put in a clause restricting hours of construction during weekends and public holidays
Bro, sorry about the visa bullshit, got no answer for you there, but what a fantastic advocate for this country, that alone should warrant residency. Keep it up and awesome that you love it here, chur my bro.
Sounds like Scandinavia - flying there from another part of Europe can take several flights, a box of berries can easily be 10...12€ and transferring money can take even 3 working(!) days 😅😅
just do pay pal. Its what its there for. Buy frozen, its the only way to try alleviate some of the costs until theres more competition so they sort it out. Like if i want fruite ill buy teh big bag of frozen fruit that normally has strawberries in it.
Took a hoa nearly a decade to get residency. Its really hard. But on the other hand, if it wasn't, the place would be swamped and where would the kiwis live? It's hard enough to get a whare as it is.
hmmmm i livein chch now just before the pandemic we had international superstars here. We had 10CC play at Selwyn Sounds, admittedly one member of 10CC does have a heap of second cousins in Chch so we might have had a conversation that sorta went if you ever tour nz again could you please come to chch. and they did but we have had others in the past.
Having lived in New Zealand for eight years following by 12 in Sydney, I vouch for the general cost of living being high in both countries/ territories. The now live in the EU and even factoring for the fluctuating exchange rates (in either direction) the cost of essential as well “healthy living” grocery items is much cheaper here. Even with recent inflation rises here, for New Zealand, a primary dairy producing nation having 250g block of butter costing at least 1/3 more than in EU seems ridiculous. The tyranny of distance as well as having a population of around 5m vs Eurozone/common market of 400million+ means increased spending power and much more competition and cheaper prices.
a few ways to help, we mostly grow our own health foods and freeze for winter go see bunnings or mitre ten, as for visas write on paper not email, to the prime minister, repeat twice weekly , until you get an answer, seems to work for me, and the money transfer is a mess rried to help my brother in the end a friend helped me it is a shocker
Home grown fruit and vegetables are ghastly over priced its exported all over the world and we're left with imported stuff that's no where near the quality of our own, you've definitely hit the nail on head when it comes to the expensive cost of healthy eating in aotearoa its an outrage, keep up the great content mate👍
Glad to hear your work/life balance is good. There is a six degrees of separation situation with NZ Population (sometimes less, the further south you go)
@C-far There is a theory about how we are connected to each other by up to six different individuals. The smaller the population, the more likely we are to casually know someone, relative or not. There was a fun internet game years ago called "six degrees of separation from (actor) Kevin Bacon".
Gotta go to the fruit and veg shops and farmers markets for better produce deals! Strawbs have been like $4 a punnet 🤤 Booze is expensive cause kiwis got carried away with drinking, soz 😂
Have to laugh at the people taking the 10 things so hard. Dude RAVES about New Zealand in video after video, nothing but positive vibes about our homeland, but can find 10 things less keen on and wham - unsubscribing. Wow. Personally I think there are loads of negatives to NZ, but there are SO MANY MORE positives that literally no other country comes even close to this paradise we have here. But even paradise isn't perfect, and I reckon finding 10 things to dislike doesn't even touch on being 'whinging' as someone said. Just the pure joy and enthusiasm for Puhoi Valley chocolate milk and Whitaker's chocolate alone cancels out the 9 minor negative niggles - though the last one is a bugger! It is a pity that there aren't the right venues in Wellington for the bigger acts.
Mate watched half of this vid before I fell asleep, then watched the rest after work… but mate your absolutely right man 💯 all things are on point and that’s someone who’s lived here his whole life 😅🙌
Love the video as always! Transferring money SUCKS. There is no reason for it, even in Australia its instant, weekend or not. I will critique you a little bit on a few points. First is your trip to Thailand. You have to remember that Covid has caused a lot of constriction in terms of international travel. Bangkok is normally a direct flight from Auckland but Thai haven't returned their direct service yet. You also must remember that Auckland is a city of 1.7m but it's airport serves a population of 5million. You shouldn't be expecting global range out of an airport in Wellington or Christchurch, with tiny populations of around 400,000 each. They're big cities by NZ standards, but irrelevant by global standards, so of course international flights will be filtered through Auckland. Secondly, cost of drinking. Look up some RTD prices in Australia and compare them to New Zealand. NZ is CHEAP.
RESIDENCY IDEA :- Is it Possible for you to Volunteer to Join the NZ Navy or Army on your Visa and put in a few years and somehow get in that way ? Do you have a qualification / trade that could be applied to the New Zealand Military ? I know it sounds extreme but it's an idea that sounds feasible even as a tourist visa or whatever you have because it's Voluntary ... I know you don't answer posts but I couldn't find a personal contact but just an Idea. NEVER say Never, Keep the Faith, Never lose HOPE ! Have a Fabulous rest of Weekend
Fruit & veg: grow your own, you don't want to be buying out of season produce, as it's either travelled airfreight (bad for the environment) and has been doused with do many bio-security chemicals (nit good for you). Emails - lol, I might check mine once a week 🙄 Visa, get a work visa, a student visa, or marry a kiwi!
Live in New Zealand for 30 years. Below are my impressions. Was blown away by the speed of transferring money. Within the same bank it is instant, between banks it can take about 1 hour. Transferring money from Europe to New Zealand takes a few hours. Costs of healthy eating is low. It costs my family between 3 - 5 dollars per person. Admittingly, we always check the prices and always go for specials. Do NOT go for a salary job when you come to New Zealand. Go for a contracting job or start our own company. You can start a company online within 15 minutes! Replying to email means you have nothing better to do. If it is urgent people have to ring you or walk to your desk. Do not drink alcohol, it is bad for your health. Arrived in New Zealand with a permanent visa. Never had a problem. New Zealand is one of the few countries in the world where you can live in peace and have a lifestyle that exceeds that of the US or the EU.
Born and bred New Zealander here! So sorry to hear about that residency nightmare, was complaining to a friend today about how impossible it is for her partner to get a residency and it feels like they just pick names out of a hat like the hunger games. Hope it works out better soon, we’re due for a change :)
If you happen to be from a non western country, its alot easier.
"hunger games" seems a good description!
@@damolux3388 how so? I'm planning to move there soon from a non-eu country.
To me the worst part is that no bands come to Welly. Like I live in the capital but I still have to drive for like 12 hours to get to aukland to see Megadeth
Tech N9ne was just here last week
I drive for about 1 hour rest an hour on the plane and drive for another hour at the most.
For me it’s the opposite lmfao
@@PR1M1T1VE yea but he is an odd one out, alot of bands and artists that do "global" tours skips NZ and it SUCKS!!!
Why would you bother ?
Agree about unhealthy food being cheap and good food being expensive. That is a serious problem.
The supermarkets are playing a dangerous game overcharging for things. But there is hope. They have recently changed a lot of the rules around supermarkets to make it much easier for new supermarkets brands enter NZ. So we should get more competition going forward which should lower prices.
New businesses to reduce the strangle hold of the duopoly of existing Australian owned brands would, likely be welcomed.
I think the main reason for the email response thing is man power. Most businesses in New Zealand operate on "just enough" staff. Also known as 3 people forced to do the work of 10
And only one part-timer that works one or two days a week who is the only one who knows how to use the email... *facepalm*
mad respect for opening up bro! I completely agree with you New Zealand does have some cons which you have addressed very well! Because of your honesty and critical feedback you are one of the best content creators New Zealand has in my POI :) Cheers buddy!

Some of the bigger banks are going to be offering 7 day payments soon, so weekends won't be an issue for much longer
@@monkeypuzzlefarm That's good to hear. Could never figure out why the interbank transfer system still effectively shut down over weekends in 2022.
Absolutely, I lived in the US and using apps like Zelle and Cashapp is a pain in the ass and low security. Most people that come to NZ love the fact you can bank to bank transfer which you definitely can't do in the US
Nope, wrong.
@@aaronf1078 what is wrong?
Totally agree on the fruit and vege prices! I have to say though - the expensive alcohol thing is not necessarily a bad thing. With our tendency towards being a binge drinking culture and all the societal and health woes associated with that, we really don't need alcohol to be any cheaper.
exactly what I thought 👍
As a drinker, I agree. It’s not like alcohol is a necessity either.
Nz is one of the only countries u can distill moonshine don’t figure
I also liked my time in Christchurch and Auckland exactly because not every one knew who you were by one or two degrees of separation unlike Nelson especially 😂
Also being a Formula 1 fan is tough having most races around 2 or 3am on a Monday morning.
The big problem is that other countries exclude fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat from GST. NZ doesn't, so it's instantly 15% more expensive - without even factoring in transport and logistics.
Dairy exports - we only supply 1% of the worlds dairy. But it is one of NZs biggest exports.
From a NZ born person, motivated skilled people need to be given a good avenue to be able to stay. NZ needs more good people that want to make it the best place possible, sadly the bureaucrats seem to want to make it as difficult as possible.
i do feel like they are trying to sabotage the country.
Damn, you’re going to freak out when buying alcohol at a bottle store in Oz. Pub prices roughly the same though.
Absolutely right mate. MFC works well but not always cost effective for the bigger acts. Love your name by the way, great reference.
COUNTRY IA BEAUTIFUL , BUT PEOPLE ,,,,
As a kiwi who travels, I agree with you on most things.
Spot on!
Easier to get in if you claim you're a 'refugee'.
Very weird.
I appreciate your frustration but hey I will never be able to get UK residency regardless of how much I love the place…so there you go 🤟🏼😊
Not even sure how I stumbled over your channel, but quite interesting seeing feedback about your own country.
Agree. I don’t know if I will ever understand the business ethics and productivity in this country.
Oh well Lol
I would have asked the bank staff " if any of them are having lunch today and would they split some "
" especially the bank manager "
" then ask the bank manager would he phone your branch that holds your accounts , to get your lunch money "
" why does he , she have a job ?
Losers using our country.
If so it passed me by 😅
I do hope you get your visa.
Finally early!
Edit: I hope everything goes well with your visa, we'd love to have you here.
Six60 shoulda been 1 and come to south Auckland bro buying drinks from the bottle store is pre much the cheapest in NZ , love your work bro 🔥
Love your videos bro! I'm a Kiwi and have been watching football for the last 6 years or so. 3am games are the only thing I know haha
Enjoy your videos Curls, could you talk about how much money 💰 you need to save to prepare to live in Nz please 🙏 ☺️
thanks for posting, picked up on the low salary/income, but you didn't mention NZ exchange rate, another killer when buying anything from overseas, like everything!
3:10 I went to Thailand a few years ago and it was only one flight. It was a long flight though.
At least they got rid of cheques but looks like interbank money transfers are only a little bit faster. In the UK its like... instantaneous. In NZ though, when you open a bank account, its a very personal service; they lay out the red carpet, unlike the UK.
I love that this is your shortest vid🙂✌️
It's still an awesome place to live. Hang in here with the rest of us... I'm sure you'll get everything sorted.
Rotorua NZ
Yeah he'd leave lol
Totally agree bro, been in Wellington for 3 decades. Fruit and vegetables are insanely expensive...this didn't used to be the case. But I'll keep my political rant in check. I use the local fruit and veg markets on Saturday (Newtown School) or Sunday (waterfront). Much better prices than supermarkets!
even the riverbank markets in lower hutt every saturday morning are cheaper than pak n save
Cheers Curls I really enjoyed hearing your dislikes of our country, agree with you heartily, nice vid 👍😎
Why is it so hard ? Do you work outdoors all day ? Otherwise don’t go to the beach before 4pm and you’ll be fine.
What do you do for work ?
Took a hoa nearly a decade to get residency. Its really hard.
But on the other hand, if it wasn't, the place would be swamped and where would the kiwis live? It's hard enough to get a whare as it is.
Ah yes, Immigration New Zealand - I'm sure the Disney corporation wants its Mickey Mouse outfit back soon
Watching the prem is painful. I hope during your time in wellington you’ve been to a few phoenix games!
Been to two mate. 4-0 loss and 1-1 draw… at least I got to see Garang Kuol though, quality!
hmmmm i livein chch now just before the pandemic we had international superstars here.
I live in Thailand and i can buy overseas imported milk (Dutch / Japanese) for the same cost if not cheaper than it costs in NZ... thats just wrong.
a few ways to help, we mostly grow our own health foods and freeze for winter go see bunnings or mitre ten, as for visas write on paper not email, to the prime minister, repeat twice weekly , until you get an answer, seems to work for me, and the money transfer is a mess rried to help my brother in the end a friend helped me it is a shocker
We've been here (from UK) 15.5 years - and got permanent residency the 'easy' way, as skilled migrants. It was still a bloody mission though.
You're spot on! I just knew these points were coming! This is why I won't move back to New Zealand.
With the banks thing, I’m pretty sure money between different banks is all transferred at 11pm each day.
Glad to hear your work/life balance is good. There is a six degrees of separation situation with NZ Population (sometimes less, the further south you go)
Can u explain ? I dont get it .
@C-far There is a theory about how we are connected to each other by up to six different individuals. The smaller the population, the more likely we are to casually know someone, relative or not. There was a fun internet game years ago called "six degrees of separation from (actor) Kevin Bacon".
@@greigclement9081 ohh.. thanks ... thats cool !
That'll be the inbreeding. 😆
Gotta go to the fruit and veg shops and farmers markets for better produce deals!
Strawbs have been like $4 a punnet 🤤
Booze is expensive cause kiwis got carried away with drinking, soz 😂
They are $2 in Oz now
Have to laugh at the people taking the 10 things so hard.
Mate watched half of this vid before I fell asleep, then watched the rest after work… but mate your absolutely right man 💯 all things are on point and that’s someone who’s lived here his whole life 😅🙌
Cool story bro...
Dude youre in wellington get to the markets wasn't expensive when i was there, and 100% better quality than what id pay more for in the uk .
When I make friends with people I always make sure that they are the same bank as me first.
Residency is a nightmare. Took me ages. I’m a citizen now, but took years and plenty of $$$’s.
Strawberries are two punnets for $5 here in Auckland
$4 each on special in Dunedin
The price of alcohol in bars and restaurants is offset by how cheap it is at the bottle store, you can get 12 cans of beer for $18!
Emails - lol, I might check mine once a week 🙄
Visa, get a work visa, a student visa, or marry a kiwi!
