I have a golden doodle and she loves to jump. She is only 5 months old but her jumping scares people. Even after 6 weeks of professional training she still jumps. Thank you for this video I will try the two leash method.

Yip. Me too. My 2 year old Male Goldendoodle jumps up when meeting new people. He is so very very friendly, and needs to say HOWDY when meeting new people....for...oh....about FIFTEEN !@#$!@ minutes! Very tiresome. I want to try this technique. If it does happen to prove successful, I'll report back!

Whst would be interesting to see is if the dog will be as restrained when visitors go to the owners house. I trained my staffie to not jump on me but any visitors were enthusiastically welcomed! Necessary recognising the instructor in this video- visitors are a different situation!!
I tried this and it WORKS! I used a six ft leash and a 4 ft leash. When my golden doodle jumps I drop the short leash and step on it. Amazing....this actually works!!!!
My 1 year old Golden Retriever matches Coleson’s personality to the T. She even gets easily distracted like Coleson. I will definitely try this!!!!
I did this with my dog and initially she stopped jumping. But then she started grabbing the leash to start a different "game" so we're now working on both behaviors.

My 9 month Dal/rotty is this to a tee, if not more hardcore. ANY physical touch activates wrestling mode. At 9 months old she is 80% better than she was at 3months or even 6! She does that thing where she gets the zoomies in the yard and flings herself at you grabbing at clothes and what not. It's looks intense but it's just "bad", frustrated play. This used to be nearly a daily occurrence and now it's maybe once every couple of weeks and far less intense. even as a little puppy she could barely keep her feet on the floor. One thing that is really helping is switching from obedience style training to low intensity agility and working a flirt pole. We only do that a couple times a week, because she still is young but what a difference it makes in jumping, mouthiness and over all "obedience". Normally we go for an hour or two of walking every day but flirt pole days or agility days she just seems more satiated and jumping/mouthing/snatching up random objects is reduced by 90% on those days. I'll start using this double leash trick next vet visit as that's where she's at her worst for jumping on folks.

Thank you so much for this video. There's a jumpy farm dog on the route I usually hike and I am trying to use some of the techniques you suggested. I obviously don't have a leash, as it's not my dog, but I hold his collar and talk calmly to him. It has already improved loads!

Oh my goodness, my standard, too!!! I took her to a garden center today. We were at the check-out...I turned to ask my standard to sit but incidentally put my hand on the counter. My dog thought I was going to ask her to jump UP ON TOP OF THE COUNTER. Which she proceeded to try to do. She would have made it, too, if I hadn't yanked her back down. Ugh.

Hi! Thank you for your videos, we are new to watching the McCann channel. We have a female boxer, just a year old this month. She’s a serious jumper when people come over- sitters, kids friends. She is determined to get to them so she can kiss them, pretty much maul them with kisses and excitement. I am going to try this technique straight away. We have been working with her since she was six months old, but couldn’t ever get the jumping under control yet. For the training leash- does it have to be a specific length? Also, eventually, down the road, if we are persistent. Will she learn to do this automatically when people come over? Thanks!!

My dog only responds to firm commands and physical reinforcement for jumping ei. Lifting your knee and showing a human “nip” ei let him jump into your knee and using the leash. They are just soft and soft doesn’t work on some dogs. I have a work bred dobie and they just cannot do as taught by the trainers if they are scared they yell and freak out and run. My family can’t do it and keep him engaged, the family just don’t get it. Some people do and know to stay calm and firm and gauge his behavior and do calming things to control him by using “dog gestures”

I really need some help in for my hyper 27 lb mut female who's 1 1/2. She is full of energy and cannot control sense of smell. She can open cabinets, get into trash, and everything in between. Probably the worst thing she does if chairs aren't pulled in is jump from chairs onto table. She's very smart and trainable knows settle leave it off sits down crate trained and never has accident in house. The thing is when she knows she made bad choice she roll on her back. I need to take care of this before it's too late.

Not at all. I would just go in aggressive with socialization and obedience. Find puppy socialization classes. Get her into obedience classes.
What do you do if he starts chewing on the leash while they are sitting of lying in front of you?
My English bulldog jumps only on outside people. My Mom and I are " immune" but everyone else is not.

When I stop my dog from jumping by stepping on the leash, he starts barking at the distraction instead. I've tried telling people not to pet him if he's barking and he will eventually settle down but he always defaults to that behavior first if I stop him from jumping. Any tips?

My dog won't jump at all indoors anymore. The second we are outside, he thinks he's in the Olympics. He will run at people, jump two feet in the air, etc. If I step on his lead outside to prevent him from jumping, he does okay, but food is not a motivator to him at all when we are outside. He is a 11-month-old Catahoula/pointer mix.

The food isn't necessary it's the payment for good behaviour. Greeting the person can be the reward. Dog gets nothing when jumping, dog gets reward when behaving politely.
That’s a great tip. However, my dog does NOT eat treats of any kind; he won’t even eat meat..hot dogs, or chicken. One thing, you’re not the stranger on the street; you’re his trainer.

He was literally pull you onto the ground cuz this was one of the first technique to actually tried The other one is down and I pulled the leash yanking it downwards and say no and then I turned it into no jump still doesn't work nothing really works with this jumping anything that's tell them you cannot do this you get to even more into doing it
Tried this for a week with both my dogs at separate intervals. They found 2 of their 4 leashes and destroyed them. Also, read a comment below, dogs have the same issue when walking. In fact, one of my dogs "will not" walk on 4 paws, she will walk on 2 paws pulling forward. Almost at wits end.
I just got a mini goldendoodle 2 weeks ago, he is 12 weeks old. and he still doesn’t respond to his name, doesn’t leave his crate only to eat. Doesn’t respond to any commands. I tried with treats but he isn’t really food motivated :/. Plays for 5 mins and goes back to his crate, eats and goes back to his crate. I need help! Any recommendations on what can I do? I can’t take him outside yet bc he doesn’t have all his vaccinations yet.
I'm sorry about your pup... Sounds like a bit of a default in genetics. No puppy should act like that. I actually had to rehome a puppy due to similar behaviors and not wanting anything to do with humans. Bad apples happen, but consult your vet and make sure he's at least healthy and then go from there.
@@SilentSaver I took him to the Vet and he seems healthy. I don’t know if he’s still not used to been here at home or what. But he just always scared and always in his crate. Only comes out to eat, plays 5 mins and goes back to his crate. I want to get him in puppy training, maybe I’m doing something wrong and they can teach me how to train him. Once he can go out, I want to take him to the park but he does not like to leave his crate unless is too eat.
Sounds like he had a restricted beginning in life. Or was scared while very young + crate seemed only safe spot. I think he will get better, just like rescues who have not been socialized completely when young.
Can you try closing the crate for 10-15 minutes at a time. Placing portions of food in different locations. Lots of work I know but if that's your only motivator, I'd use it to stretch him to explore further. Hunger is a motivator. Your happy voice saying good dog softly as he moves. You may have to show him a portion of food in bowl and have him watch you take it to another location (not far). Could put a dab of smelly peanut butter in bowl so dog can follow the aroma. Difficult but socialization for shy dogs would be helpful. Best to you.
@@jahirseclen9468 Yeah my rehomed puppy was the same way. Only wanted other dogs. Only time she would "act normal" Otherwise completely shut down and would lay in a corner. That was 4 months ago, and she still acts the same. (My father took her to be a goofy dumb country dog with his other 2!) I'll HOPE you have a turn around but I want to believe it's probably just the way the dog is. 2 weeks is more than enough time for a puppy to get comfortable.
My personal opinion, no puppy should ever be scared like that unless it's poor genetics making it a scared/nervous/untrusting dog. Especially from a breeder.

Can you use his jump as a command for a task? You could train that and then he will only associate the jump with that request. It will definitely take some breaking it down into small steps like training the task part ex. Hit the light switch with touch then add the Touch while jumping have it hit a target. Then link the two together.
