WARNING sound @ 14:50 with the mics goes horribly wrong. It was slightly painful to my headphone wearing ears. 18:09 they unplug and plug it in again so it seems ok, so skip there to avoid the ear rape.
Yes, one of the factors of a Winston draft is that there's a pull between quality and quantity. Like how their first pile kept getting bigger because there were a lot of ok cards in it, but they wanted to see if they could get something better.
This would have been just an interesting LRR draft video, but having Beej on the board ("Beej why? ... Is your mouth full??") made it and interesting LRR draft video... that was also HILARIOUS.
That was a great format to watch. I often get a bit lost trying to pay attention to multiple players at the same time, but this was easy to follow as you each took turns talking about picks :)
Been really digging Winston draft lately, so I've been binge watching these past streams and lovin' it. I gotta catch you guys live sometime! Hopefully for a Winston draft ;)
If you Winston Draft, you NEED somebody to just watch you so that you remember to put cards on piles. I drafted Kaladesh this way with a friend and we constantly forgot to put cards back.
No memory problems: Place three identical double sided tokens down in front of where each pile will go (typically found in products like deck builders toolkits, or just use a piece of paper with a different color on each side). Each player has a reminder token that matches one of the sides. On a player's turn, that player picks up a pile from any of those in front of them with their token facing up, flips the token card, lays down a new card, THEN looks at the pile to decide whether or not to draft it. If they keep the new card's already in place, if they don't they just put it back on top of the new card. Once they've chosen, flip all tokens to the other player's side. You could instead just do them in order like Graham and Ben did, but I like being able to start from whichever pile strikes my fancy.
It will be interesting to see what happens if you guys do more Winstons. My experience is that it's the exact opposite of a draft league...more similar to a team draft but even more extreme. Hate good cards and big piles and make a more functional deck than your opponent.
Nice format! Never tried the Winston Draft before, but I definitely wanna try it! Another question: What kind of cameras are you guys have in front of you showing your hand?
Would an Unstable Winston draft work? I've only seen game 1 so far. It was pretty amazing! I had a strong feeling Graham had the second rebuke and he did not disappoint :D
1:11:54 why didn't Graham wait until he know which creature(s) would attack or just before Damage-dealing step to cast Dark Nourishment? (because he would have more information, right?) Sorry I am still quite noob here...
Having gone through the trouble of replacing a fake Ravages of War with a real copy (The fake one had gorgeous art in foil...), I can confirm what Graham said: Ravages of War is, indeed, stupid expensive.
There's a camera pointed at that specific spot on the table, which feeds into a card recognizer program hooked into the overlay - Paul's done a LRRTech stream before on how the card recognizer actually works, if you're ever curious, it should be on this channel somewhere.
I love to Winston draft but when I do this with my wife I use 8 packs to get some better synergy (I found 9-10 packs to be a little to over powered with the options you get).
I play this format a little differently that makes it a lot more fun I think. For one, we dont take the whole pile, we only take the new card the other player puts on top of the pile. This means one person doesnt get to see what the other person didnt take, and this means both players will have the same amount of cards at the end For two, you only look at the top card on each pile. Not the whole pile (because of the above mentioned rule, you're not going to be taking all those cards anyway) I think its better when you dont have information on the other one is drafting. Keeps things interesting.
I don't think this is better... part of what makes drafting interesting is having information about what other players are taking. If you're doing it this way you might as well just play Sealed; it's faster to set up.
No, you don't know what other players are taking specifically. With a full pod, there are 8 picks where you have no idea what was taken because you have not seen those packs previously. Only on your 9th pick do you see what wheeled, and even then you don't know who took what. Winston draft was created by Garfield literally to be able to have a way to 2 person draft and not be just showing What your taking and not taking
I did not say "knowing the specific cards that other players are picking." The phrase I used was "information about what other players are taking." If you've ever drafted before, another word for this is a "signal," which mostly refers to which colors the players in front of you are not taking and are open for you. Looking at a whole pile in Winston draft preserves some of that. If there are a lot of decent green cards in one pile and your opponent keeps passing over them, you could consider switching to green, for example. With your rules variation, there is none of that back and forth, and the draft process becomes a solitary experience.
Have you tried it? Its definitely very interactive. I forgot to mention one rule. Once the draft pile has all been used, you shuffle all three piles and go again. This means you both will see cards you didn't see before (the cards the other player didn't take) and that's your signal.
Windows 10 is the worst thing ever! #BlameWindows10 Few things have made me as ANGRY and *FRUSTRATED* as dealing with Windows 10, I've literally pulled the battery out of a laptop and did a restore in order to stop it from updating. it is literally the WORST os I've ever been forced to use and I *HATE* it so much! I've actually cried actual tears while grinding my teeth in RAGE while dealing with it hijacking my computer and doing things without my permission and reminding me to do the things I DON'T WANT TO DO every time I turn it on And now it is causing me ACTUAL AURAL PAIN while watching fun people play a game on UA-cam
This is a really sweet format! Thanks for raising awareness for all the bored draft couples who needed something to do!
Being able to see the whole meta-game of the draft itself made this so much more interesting than I thought missing six players would be! Moar plz
Just like the Friday Nights, Beej seems to know a lot more about magic than he lets on.
"When you hear "Magic magic magic magic magic magic magic magic~" for five years straight, you start to pick up stuff.
Derp derp derp, I’m Alex, and this is how I talk!
WARNING sound @ 14:50 with the mics goes horribly wrong. It was slightly painful to my headphone wearing ears. 18:09 they unplug and plug it in again so it seems ok, so skip there to avoid the ear rape.
ow, thanks
I'm a little surprised they didn't edit this out, as it is quite bad.
Gareth K they didn’t edit it out because they made picks and also this is a stream
They became compleat but then somehow the oil was eliminated from their bodies.
Thanks for the warning, very nice of you. Please have a great day!
I love it that they show the newest played card on the bottom left. Why can't they do that on tournament coverage? It would be so awesome.
CBC shirt and lumberjack plaid: I think these guys are Canadians
Please do Winston Drafts more. It's my favorite draft format.
Doesn't this format cause the two players to have a different number of cards?
Yes, one of the factors of a Winston draft is that there's a pull between quality and quantity. Like how their first pile kept getting bigger because there were a lot of ok cards in it, but they wanted to see if they could get something better.

It's good experience for him.

Winston Draft Hardmode: Shuffle in 15 of each basic land and draft your mana base with your playables.
What I used to do: the person who isn't looking at stacks takes a card from the pile and puts it where needed.
No memory problems:

Ben likes the bears? Well hello handsome... Give me a call sometime. Haha.

This was fantastic! please do it again!
This is great with cubes. Sometimes it is worth taking the big pile just for card selection when building.
The was really fun, though I actually enjoyed the draft portion more than the games, just because the reactions were so fun. :D
You guys should do an unstable winston draft
Nice format! Never tried the Winston Draft before, but I definitely wanna try it!
Another question: What kind of cameras are you guys have in front of you showing your hand?
Graham mentioned at one point that they’re Microsoft Lifecam, though maybe they can answer with a more specific model.
Lol Beej messing with the energy counters
Would an Unstable Winston draft work?

Do both players end up with the same amount of cards? What if one just keeps picking the biggest pile?
I've done this with cube alot. It's awesome way of playing.
This was so good with Beej in it. The more Beej the better!
Having gone through the trouble of replacing a fake Ravages of War with a real copy (The fake one had gorgeous art in foil...), I can confirm what Graham said: Ravages of War is, indeed, stupid expensive.
Where did you guys get the mana stand in the back next to graham?
What a freaking good idea! I was just thinking about trying Winston draft!
Mono-wrath is actually a fun archetype in some cubes. (although it can be horrible in some cubes as well)
Have you guys ever done grid drafting? We do it all the time for cube
Wait a second...doesn't that mean that a pre-release kit is just a Winston draft in a box?
Ravagers of War was $60/206? I hope ppl got them in 2017, cause in 2021 they're $249/600
I have also winston drafted cube. It's a lot of fun too XD
Is that LRR symbol magic? how do they.. with the cards and it autoshowing up thing. or is it done after? such confuse.
There's a camera pointed at that specific spot on the table, which feeds into a card recognizer program hooked into the overlay - Paul's done a LRRTech stream before on how the card recognizer actually works, if you're ever curious, it should be on this channel somewhere.
That sweet CBC shirt. Gets me googling every time.

I want to achieve the point of assholeness that people throw parties when i move out.
I think Winston draft should be renamed Monty Hall draft. Winston draft doesn't evoke any of the mechanics of the draft itself.
Where's the themed snacks!
Ben is excited at every card.
Graham stark comes so adult in that stream..crazy^^
Graham, I love your sweater.
OMG look at that shirt. LOOK AT IT. LOOK AT GRAHAM'S SHIRT AND PRAISE THE MULT-COLORED C GODS!
Ghost26968 that's the old logo of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in his shirt XD
Awesome intro!
Not suspicious enough Graham.
I dont think they realized you get to choose which pile you look at, you dont have to keep picking the same pile first, second, third
this was great!
They correct the audio issue at 18:12, FYI.

LRR drinking game - Ben's Catch Phrase is 100% What the Shit!?
You guys should do 2v2 commander
At 30:30, am I the only one who would have windmill slammed that Opt?
6:25 for personal use :p
35:15 the Beej laugh...
i ripped a pair of earbuds up because i thought it was my end. RIP my headphones.
Well that was rash
The producer could use some tech to be able to talk to the actors without the consumer being aware. #earpiece
It's done that way intentionally, Beej is a part of the Group, just like Paul is.
Ben is best bae
First. I’ll stop
