    The biggest question I get is about estimating - and it's my most popular video. But you don't need to worry about how to estimate. Only 2 things can happen if you are not correct with your estimating....
    #1 - You bid the job too high. If this happens, the customer will tell you that it's too high and you will learn from it and adjust your bid.
    #2 - You bid the job too low. If you bid a job CORRECTLY for $3,000, you can hire someone to paint it for $1,500. So if you bid the job too low... like $1,500 too low... you still won't even lose money.
    And you will definitely learn your lesson!
    So what is more important, is sales. If you aren't good at sales, you won't ever sell a job for the CORRECT price... You will need to be a low bidder, which won't make you money.
    The lesson? Don't worry so much about estimating... focus on sales!!

    I never scratch at the door to ask for money if I miss measure etc. it's not professional and it's away to build a bad reputation. Learn from mistakes, take your loss and be better at estimating. Ive been self employed for 30 years.

      I generally agree. ,however most customers don’t want to hurt a young person who made a mistake ( they too were young and inexperienced).I’ve been asked and am always delighted to cover the extra costs(I like to sleep well).If a home owner says no- he (probably)knew he was getting a deal he didn’t deserve- good riddance. It’s a win/win.

    Good day, i’ve been painting for a month or so already. And believe i’m ready to start my own painting business. Been watching all these videos to help me understand more about the business, and they are very helpful. i’ve been painting seed bins & walls at my job. And have a client already lined up ready for her house to be painted. But i wanna give her & every client after that a perfect price. These videos help & i hope all is well.

    Like he said go and do it then you'll learn if your right or wrong I think people think iam going to fail if I give this price but that's the way you learn. You could do the formula right and be excellent at it but costumers don't go by formulas they'll question you. You'll say but my figures say this and that they don't wan t to hear it. Just be creative and offer what others don't offer.

      PaintingBusinessPro It seems like youre doing great, and you provide value, while passively putting out your own cta's, which is great, you execute on yt better than most, while still keeping attention. Keep up the good work. P.S., fuck the haters. If anything, be proud you have them, because they're instrumental in growth, and even a mark on your own personal timeline, because ANYONE that progresses their life, business, or even (and especially) online business, is GOING to attract haters along the way. Keep doing what you're doing, you've inspired me in less than a few hours. 👌

    Eric, you are doing a great service for the residential repaint industry. I am a long time painting contractor, raised up in the business. I have been doing this business long enough to know that I can always learn from other contractors. It's easy to get stuck in old school painter ways, and I appreciate how you concentrate on the business side of things, which is where average painting contractors are most weak.
    It was only when I decided to quit being a self employed painter and started being in the business of painting that I began to enjoy the painting business.
    After watching a few of your videos, which I like by the way, I purchased your course. I purchased your course mainly to learn your process for teaching your sales people how to sale your services. But don't think I didn't learn a few other things that I could begin implementing as well to improve the efficiency of my business, because I did.
    I highly advise any paint contractor to buy your course and review your materials. You highlight some very good points that can help any painting company ( new or old ). I give it a thumbs up for sure!
    Great job!

    Thanks for these videos, they are very helpful. The biggest thing I have been concerned about is estimating. I am going to break through the anxiety and do it. I started my own painting business and have been painting only interior because I have not done exterior in many many years and have not done a bid in over 5 years( for exterior) when I worked in North Carolina for a painting company taking sub contracts. A lot of helpful tips in these videos, like you said with a %50 mark up its nearly impossible to lose money unless its your employees and/ or someone screws something up extremely bad, but many more things can go wrong its very rare though.

    Not every customer is honest to tell you the other estimates.
    Real customer should show the written estimate.Scope of the work should be written in details.
    Otherwise,you compare apples to oranges.
    Wall ,ceiling sqft,trim linerft,number of window ,door,colour change,damages on the walls, trim,furniture in the house should be inspected and priced accordingly.
    Another option is just estimate how many days and how many guys needed to finish job then multiply by $200 for helper and $350 min for painter and add paint and supplies.

    The only time you actually lose money is if your bid is lower than the cost of materials (M) plus transportation (T) plus post-bid incidentals (I). So...
    If M + T + I = $1000, but you bid $1200, and it took 40 work-hours to finish, then you still made $5/hr. It sucks, yeah; but you didn't lose money, per se.

      +doobysnacks Great vids, btw. Great advice near the end, about going out and doing it. Hey, does your estimating course take into account incidental non-painting things such as replacement of rotted siding, fascia, trim, etc.? That's where I tend to mess up when estimating.

      I don't specifically talk about how to deal with incidentals... basically if I didn't notice it up front, and I found it later I would go tell the customer about it and present their options to them. Nothing too crazy about that one.

    Hi Eric. I'm a single mom and love to paint and do renovations. I've been wanting to start a company for a very long time, but have always been afraid of leaving the security of my job. Well, that has been taken care of for me. I lost my job, and can't find another one willing to pay what I need to make (plus I hated what I was doing - I'm someone who thrives working with their hands). Do you think it is feasible to start a company and do the painting myself for awhile? I feel I need to learn it and live it before involving subcontractors. i love your videos! Thank you so much!

      Start by painting your own house. Take before and after photos. Figure out what you need to make per hour ($15-$20). See if your state allows you to do hourly work legally without LLC or insurance. My state does so I can legally work as a “general laborer” hourly. I can not bid jobs. Doing things this way you will charge time plus materials, and make way less than if you bid jobs. But it’s better than not working at all. Only work for people you know and trust! Once you gain experience and confidence then think about moving up getting LLC and insurance. The LLC and insurance is not expensive so if you can do that right away you should but I would not try to bid jobs. Also when looking at jobs you need to know your limits. Can you move furniture? Can you handle ladders? Do you fatigue easily? You may hate being a painter it’s exhausting. I work for myself by myself and I do not do exterior work. It’s too dangerous and I can not move giant ladders myself so I just don’t do it. I sometimes have to pay guys to come and help with just moving furniture. After 10 years I’ve finally got to the point that my work speed is way too fast and time plus materials for me equals me ripping myself off. I am going to start bidding jobs but that’s after 10 years! If you can get in with a painting company maybe try that for a while then you’ll be able to ask questions and learn from others while you’re working and getting paid.

  • @karynm3365
    @karynm3365 6 років тому +1

    I think you need to make it very clear to the customer that it's only an educated estimate of the total cost and not a set-in-stone number. There are variables that may change the price due to for instance the condition of the walls, more paint needed if necessary, moving of furniture you didn't account for, etc, etc. Of course, you'll need to let them know what percentage it could go up or down by - it shouldn't be left open-ended. This way you don't have your customers thinking you've done a "bait and switch" with them.

    • @PaintingBusinessPro
      @PaintingBusinessPro  6 років тому

      That's not how we do it. We give customers a final, set in stone price. We have more detailed estimating formulas than what is presented in this video. Those estimating forms can be found here: www.paintingbusinesspro.com/estimating-guide

    • @karynm3365
      @karynm3365 6 років тому

      Hmmm, but it isn't a final set-in-stone price if you're going back to them asking for more money if you estimated incorrectly.

    • @PaintingBusinessPro
      @PaintingBusinessPro  6 років тому +1

      We don't go back and ask more customers for more money. This is a signed contract and it's our responsibility to give them a correct price. Not saying you can't do it your way, but we don't do it that way. We provide a customer a contract with a set price for the work and that's the contract they are signing. We don't ask customers for more money. If we messed up our estimate, that's our fault and we don't put that burden onto our customers.

    • @karynm3365
      @karynm3365 6 років тому +1

    Looked at a small ranch house today and client said he was going to grab my pressure washer after I washed the house to do his patio and fence. Basically, I'm going to use your equipment for free with your gas while you're painting, lol. That's not ever happening and I added $400 to the bid because I can already tell the type.

    I've done Victorians for over $20,000. Be careful people. You can get hurt bad financially, if you take on painting a Victorian house for only $7,000. You make some good points in your video. I have to ask, those general numbers you're throwing out there; they must be for labor only, right? Not including materials. I just finished a 2.5 story house and the material cost alone was over $1,100. But I don't use low end materials.

    • @patfitzgerald9287
      @patfitzgerald9287 9 років тому

      Fair enough. I have an atypical niche in my area doing a lot of custom color work and restoring old buildings. My clients also usually prefer the highest end paint so the materials I use are pretty pricey.

    Asking for more money after the contract is set with an agreed price is really unprofessional. That's a great way to get the customer to not give you any extra money AND not give you any recommendations. And if there's any imperfections in the job they'll just assume you didn't care enough about it to do it right.
    It doesn't come off as genuine, it comes off as a bait and switch.

    • @PaintingBusinessPro
      @PaintingBusinessPro  6 років тому

      I agree. This is not a common practice of ours by any means. More like an option for someone who is concerned. It's not a goto strategy for your business. The only way to ultimately succeed in business is to genuinely do a great job for customers and genuinely provide great work environments and opportunities for your team members and contractors.
