Hi. I have an injured by lifting something heavy in a bad way and the pain in my back Amy right leg has been increasing with the days. Also I went to ER and the doctor gave some antiinflamatory pills along with pain and muscle relaxers but after 3 days taking them I’m still in pain and can’t get up from the bed at all. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.👍🏻
It does but you have to also do strengthening exercises to help it grow strong again - starting with very gentle things and increasing intensity as it heals.
When I sustained the muscle tear/sprain, I had pains deep in the buttocks, discomfort when sitting down, pain when bending. After 2 weeks of Rest, Ice, and Elevate, the above pains stopped, I can walk well without pains but I still can't stretch the leg. what do you advise going forward, to continue RICE or move to strengthening
Question: How do I know what rate I should be increasing the weights during the strengthening phase without reinjuring myself. I've gotten reinjured multiple times without feeling anything bad during the exercise but the next day so I cant really "feel it out"
If the current level you are training at feels 100% fine, then increase the weights only very slightly for the next session and do fewer repetitions for the first session - so you test the new weight with very easy session. Then you build the reps of that weight up. If you wanted help with your rehab and an exercise plan, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. I've never been this disabled and i have no idea how i will manage to heal both of them. I mean, i must use my arms for putting my clothes on, cook, etc.
I have a muscle strain on the bottom left side corner of my left foot very awkward place but it’s the same area as last year second time going through this !!😤
Yes - even severe muscle tears can heal without surgery as long as you do the right things (e.g. rehab etc.). But bear in mind that I am saying this without any context about your specific situation - you will get better advice if you get it checked by a physiotherapist or doctor who can then provide tailored advice to you.
It depends on what muscle it is and where it happened - best to ask the doctor in charge of your care since they will have better insights into your situation
No bruises or swelling, but a good portion of my back is in lots of pain.. ER said I pulled a muscle. Went to my spine dr. He said same thing. Muscle pull, you’ll be fine in a few weeks. 5 days in and it seems like certain movements hurt like hell. I feel skeptical of these answers the drs give. I feel like a tear in the back would need surgery? I also know the back is like one big muscle.Wondering if I need an mri or if my body can actually heal from whatever the hell happened. Thanks for the great information as always!
Actually our backs are made up of bones that are connected with extremely strong ligaments and then lots of different muscles. You have small muscles that run from each vertebrae to the next and stabilizes the back. Then you have several large muscles that are located in your back. Just like with the rest of your body, you can strain a muscle, ligament or joint in your back. Muscle strains in the back can hurt a lot. It can take 4 weeks sometimes to see any real improvement and then 6 to 12 to recover fully. Best of luck with your recovery.
They don't offer much other than a bit of symptomatic relief. But be careful of using heat in the first 3 to 5 days as it may increase internal bleeding and swelling.
It does but you have to also do strengthening exercises to help it grow strong again - starting with very gentle things and increasing intensity as it heals.
Thanks for ur vid really helped me I pulled my oblique muscle while running and now it hurts to sort of twist or bend down. It’s a grade 1 injury and I’m wondering how long should it take to heal
Love your advice on gradual strength progression. You may want to check into the turnaround of using ice though. 10 years ago, Dr Gabe Mirkin who coins the term and protocol of RICE, recanted the use of ice. There’s great education from Mike Stella and Kelly Starrett on the subject!
Ice is one of those things where I feel the baby is being thrown out with the bathwater. Instead of having a nuanced approach people are turning against it and there really isn't overly strong evidence to support a view of using no ice. I am yet to find any studies where they actually test how the use of ice vs. no ice affect recovery in real people - not just theoretical work based on lab studies that doesn't present what happens in the real world. It's like with passive stretching - where people were shouting about how bad it is for you etc. and then researchers started doing better trials that actually represented what athletes do in practice (passive stretches followed by active) and found that it had no negative effects if you use it like that. So far, what we know is that regular cooling after strength training may attenuated your strength gains. But again, post workout cooling has a place depending on the situation - if you are looking to recover a bit more quickly before doing your next event (so strength gains are not your priority) then it is something to use. Instances where I still advise ice for injuries include: 1. Immediately after injury to help stop bleeding - this is not wack it on and leave it there - it is for 10 minutes - at this point there is no inflammatory reaction yet so it does not have an impact on that. But what it does is stop the internal bleeding to limit secondary injury due to increased pressure from excessive swelling and bleeding. It also slows the metabolism of the cells, so if they are starved of oxygen due to the increased pressure from lots of internal bleeding (especially if it is inside muscle sheath) then they are less likely to die. 2. If someone is experiencing high levels of pain - ice, for me is always a better choice than medication because it doesn't affect the system for as long and does not have any nasty side effects. Again, it is not meant to be used excessive but rather in short bursts and only as needed. 3. If someone has excessive swelling - in my opinion the negative effect from excessive swelling on the tissue outweighs any negative effect of ice applied for short periods to help reduce it.

You need to do a warm-up that suits the session e.g. it is fine if you just use active stretches and dynamic moves to warm up rather than treadmill. And it really depends on what you can do without pain if you have a muscles tear

Thanks again 🙏
Hi great video btw, addressed everything. Got a question, I injured my knee, it was swollen at first and I did everything to get it back working, but its been six weeks now, and I still feel pain from my outer quads, and when the knee is bent the patella tendonitis is a bit swollen, I still feel a bit of pain when bending the knee, and running but I don't force myself to run hard, I don't know how to go about it now? this is the longest recovery time for an injury for me so, I don't know what to do? Could you give me some advice on it. thank you.
It really depends on what is wrong with your knee - it may be a normal recovery time depending on what you've actually injured in/or around the knee. The one can produce images - this is the type they use to scan for pregnancy and assess injuries The other is one that works on a different frequency that is believed to help tissue healing - it doesn't produce images but is used for treatment - this is the one therapists typically have in their offices
Hi Doc, if a rehabbed muscle strain is flaring up (even without activity) can we do massage on it? How do we do this correctly without making it worse? Thank you
As long as the massage is gentle it should be OK - but if your pain is coming on without activity it may not be a muscles strain but rather referred pain from somewhere else.

Thank you so much for this video! I just finally got a diagnosis via ultrasound for bilateral burning foot pain I’ve had for over a year. What I initially thought was tarsal tunnel is a bilateral second degree tear in my abductor hallicis that is irritating/compressing nerves and causing the bottoms of my feet to burn and hurt. I don’t recall any specific incident but I was on my feet a lot and pushing around a lot of equipment to do a renovation at that time. My diagnostician recommended injections to heal them as it’s been upwards of 14 months and they’ve not healed. Are there any dos and don’ts at this time? I’m waiting for my doctor to come back from vacation and am worried about what to do.

10/10 video, I've had an inner soleus strain for like 2 years now, because no one told me this info. Its an on off injury, I just injured it again recently. I assume I should wait for pain to subside and start with simple movements. But in terms of strengthening how often should exercises be done?
It really depends on what you are doing. Hello Marieke, thank you so much! binge watched your videos. I fell a month ago, but when i got up nothing was hurting, so i didn’t pay any attention. in about a week my knee started to hurt. still i didn’t pay much attention until it got so bad I couldn’t step on it. two more weeks passed meanwhile. went to the emergency (because it takes ages here to make an appointment without an emergency). the doctor said it’s a strain, rest and take nimesil. I am wondering, if I possibly have done a permanent damage to myself by not applying measures on the day of injury. after a week of icing and rest and using crutches it better, but as soon as it got better I started stepping on it again and now it feels as if it’s getting slightly worse again. what would be the best possible action for someone who missed the opportunity of treatment on the day of injury? is it possible to recover or can it become a permanent damage?
I would suggest you consult a physiotherapist who can give you more detailed advice about what exercises to do and how to start weightbearing on it in a way that suits your injury. It will heal just fine but you do need to understand what is going on and what you must do to help it. You left this comment on the muscle tear video - this does not sound like a muscle tear, so you really need to get it diagnosed as well and a physiotherapist can do that. I fell off a ladder yesterday and I can't walk without pain (left leg). I get around by limping I've been resting all day and have been elevating my left leg. My leg is not swollen I just can't put any pressure while walking.
I don't know what you mean with soft tissue ultrasound vs. musculoskeletal ultrasound. There is only one type of ultrasound machine that shows images and it shows all types of soft tissue injuries, including hematomas.
What if I do t treat it for an entire year, finally have an mri and am told I have a Partial-thickness (approximately 50%) tear of the medial gastroc at its origin with some mild adjacent edema. How do I help an old injury that is still very painful heal?
The treatment is similar to a new one - you have to adapt your activities and the shoes you wear etc. to reduce the strain on it so it can settle and start recovering and at the same time ease into gentle rehab. Then as it grows stronger progress the rehab. A physiotherapist will be able to guide you through this process. I don't think it's severe, mild to moderate, really. I've occasionally stretched it, gently. The problem is on the right side of my foot. I've used a bandage for a little less than a day, it's a lot better today.
Great info! Thank you!
THANK YOU! I have a difficult muscle to treat so I'm not sure whether I can work through the recovery alone, but I've been trying to treat injuries wrong forever. I just rested for days then started aggressively massaging and stretching. Now I know why my injuries never healed properly.,

Amazing video thanks!
My pleasure!

Hi doc, do severe muscle injury heal on its own?
Thank you
It does but you have to also do strengthening exercises to help it grow strong again - starting with very gentle things and increasing intensity as it heals.
How did you elevate it?
Same here.im 63 hurts
Thank you! Amazing video !!
Then you build the reps of that weight up.

hello, thanks for the helpful video. When do you suggest to introduce and start applying heat to the muscle?
Heat does not contribute to healing so we don't recommend it, but if you wanted to use it, it is usually safe after about 5 days.
thank you!
Thanks for the video , it helps me a lot, I was lifting a 30 gallon water heater and I felt in my upper arm -shoulder area SNAPED and
started hurt and pain. So now I can't use it for much . resting waiting to heal ? I am on healthy diet lifstyle. hope it heals quick ?
I would actually get it checked by a physio because it sounds like you may have torn something significant that may need more than just rest.
Got a grade 1 tear in my right brachiordialis 6 weeks ago during a set of preacher curls which reruptured a week ago, and yesterday i hindered a person from falling, which caused another grade 1 tear, but in my left forearm... I've never been this disabled and i have no idea how i will manage to heal both of them. I mean, i must use my arms for putting my clothes on, cook, etc.
Damn.. are you better now??
I have a muscle strain on the bottom left side corner of my left foot very awkward place but it’s the same area as last year second time going through this !!😤
Hi doc, I hope you'll notice
Do severe muscle tear will still heal on its own?
Thank you
Yes - even severe muscle tears can heal without surgery as long as you do the right things (e.g. rehab etc.). But bear in mind that I am saying this without any context about your specific situation - you will get better advice if you get it checked by a physiotherapist or doctor who can then provide tailored advice to you.
Really good video thank you
Very welcome
Hi doc, what would be the treatment if muscle is completely torn?
Thank you
It depends on what muscle it is and where it happened - best to ask the doctor in charge of your care since they will have better insights into your situation
Thanks allot...
I was practising ariel..
And got a muscle pull😥
Same lol
How often to strength train an injury?
It depends on the injury and the intensity of the exercises but in most cases, max 3 times a week and leave at least 1 recovery day between sessions.
Very helpful but what about using heat or muscle rubs sold in the pharmacy.
They don't offer much other than a bit of symptomatic relief. But be careful of using heat in the first 3 to 5 days as it may increase internal bleeding and swelling.
Hi doc, do muscle tear heal on its own?

It does but you have to also do strengthening exercises to help it grow strong again - starting with very gentle things and increasing intensity as it heals.

Hi doc, is machine gun good time use for history of injury? Esp muscle tightness
Thank you
I assume you're referring to a massage gun. Here's our video on that: ua-cam.com/video/tA99gl-72Ac/v-deo.html
Thanks for ur vid really helped me I pulled my oblique muscle while running and now it hurts to sort of twist or bend down. It’s a grade 1 injury and I’m wondering how long should it take to heal
Should be about 6 weeks.
Instances where I still advise ice for injuries include:
Very helpful professional information, thx

Do i need to warmup every time before start strengthen the tendon like 5-10min cycling to get the blood flow
I don't have enough context to answer your question.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio should i jump straight to lifting weight with no 5min treadmill ?
You need to do a warm-up that suits the session e.g. it is fine if you just use active stretches and dynamic moves to warm up rather than treadmill. And it really depends on what you can do without pain if you have a muscles tear
Hi doc, may I ask do hot compress good for tendon injury?
Thank you
It can help reduce pain, but it doesn't really help with healing.
So helpful thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I felt a sharp pain just below my left shoulder blade playing tennis and the Ln that muscle has been spasming for some time, I’ve RICEd it and most spasming has stopped but is that a sign something else could be wrong?
You might have sprained your middle back. A physio should be able to assess it for you and give you some exercises to help.
Hi doc, is it ok to exercise a muscle tear after few days even there is a still a muscle tear?
Thank you
You usually start rehab after about 2 days but it has to be gentle exercise and correctly chosen for the person's specific case.
Hi doc, may I ask do severe muscle tear will heal on its own?
Thank you
You do have to do rehab exercises for it, but yes, it will heal without surgery usually.
Hi doc, may I ask what treatment is good for muscle contusion?

Hi doc, do musculoskeletal ultrasound show injury in a certain part of the body?
Thank you
It can be used for any soft tissue assessments of ligaments, tendons and muscles.
I just want to say a very big thank you for this video, on the 23rd of July I tore my sartorious muscle during a football game to be honest I saw it coming I've been feeling slight pain in my muscle some two weeks before it happened, now I'm out of the game fully, through the remaining days of last month I've had to rest and do the RICE treatment now I'm doing lite jogging gradually testing my limits, I haven't been able to sprint yet I've tried and I feel the pain deep within the muscle, are there any special foods I can add to my diet, since the injury I've been eating more fruits and veggies... Thanks again 🙏
I think you should have added more meat and maybe liver but anyway how are you now bro??
I discuss how to distinguish between the main types of knee injuries in this video: ua-cam.com/video/TIQfC7Wgb_s/v-deo.html

what if i didn't do anything in the first day? after i got the pull i rested a bit but still walked a lot, i didn't run or anything but i walked a lot will that require special treatment
As long as you limit your activity to whatever you can do without aggravating it, then it is OK
I strain d my left hip/leg however I don’t know when I did it. I’m on a 72 hour fast and after this I will head to a sports doctor just no insurance until November 1st….
Hi doc, can musculoskeletal ultrasound show if there's an injury?
Thank you
Yes - it can
Suggest food for healing
Hi doc, may I ask what's the difference between musculoskeletal ultrasound and soft tissue ultrasound?
Thank you
The one can produce images - this is the type they use to scan for pregnancy and assess injuries
The other is one that works on a different frequency that is believed to help tissue healing - it doesn't produce images but is used for treatment - this is the one therapists typically have in their offices
Where can I find a calf strengthening program for grade 2?
Hi Doc, if a rehabbed muscle strain is flaring up (even without activity) can we do massage on it? How do we do this correctly without making it worse? Thank you
As long as the massage is gentle it should be OK - but if your pain is coming on without activity it may not be a muscles strain but rather referred pain from somewhere else.
Helllo,i think i strained my arm and back, becouse it hurts in the back and biceps i think.Today 3 weeks i rested it ,but its like big discomfort, does it will heal in week period ?Thank u❤
I can't tell how long it will take to heal as it is not clear what injury you have - get it diagnosed by a physiotherapist and they will be able to tell you how long it will take to heal and what you must do to help it recover.

It really depends on your specific case so it is best to ask the person who has assessed you.

Low load exercises can be done daily but once it transitions into proper strength training, then usually only 2 or 3 times a week with at least one rest day between sessions.

Still having that issue?
Hi doc, can soft tissue ultrasound show hematoma?
Or it should be musculoskeletal ultrasound?
Thank you
I don't know what you mean with soft tissue ultrasound vs. musculoskeletal ultrasound. There is only one type of ultrasound machine that shows images and it shows all types of soft tissue injuries, including hematomas.
What if I do t treat it for an entire year, finally have an mri and am told I have a Partial-thickness (approximately 50%) tear of the medial gastroc at
its origin with some mild adjacent edema.
